[Q] What's The Best Unix For Dev - Verizon Droid Charge

With everyone fleeing the Charge (lol) I figure I might as well pick your brains while I can. It seems we could use a full Odin FP1 so everyone wouldn't have to go back to EP4 and take OTA's. Nandroid backups don't seem too reliable and are version specific. I've never had an issue with Odin and it seems a better backup/restore process. What I've read so far states that I need unix to build a full Odin. Any suggestions on what flavor of unix? What about ROM and theme development? Unix or Windows?

Well you won't be able to pull everything you need for a full odin (at least in the sense of what people use when going back to EP4). Check out this thread for some info on making an ODIN.

Ubuntu is probably pretty widely used for development in Android. At the least I'd dual boot it with Windows or run it from a USB drive.
The flavor of Linux is just a matter of preference really....One doesn't have any major advantages or disadvantages over another distribution.

I read the entire thread too. Still confused since someone had to make the full EP4 Odins in the first place. I'm used to beating my head against the wall at work so I'll just have to give it a shot. :banghead:

LOL - yeah it can be. I'm pretty sure the full ODINs we see are actually leaked in some way - but how that goes about I have no clue.

Odin One Click for Official Froyo KB1?

Any word on if there will be an Odin One Click for the official Froyo 2.2 KB1? If so, will it be able to incorporate the ability to recieve OTA updates? I've looked in many obvious threads including, the development section as well as the Odin One Click thread.
Doesn't KB1 come with a newer recovery that needs to be downgraded regardless? So why not just flash back to JF6?

Any more updates, I wouldn't hold my breath, won't be OTA. AT&T learned it's lesson with the JH7 fiasco.
You can just use Odin3 to get back to JF6, then reinstall the Froyo update via Kies. Done it a half dozen times already.
I am aware that I could flash back to jf6 and go from there. Just curious if odin would make a kb1 is all. I agree, hopefully att learned from ota update fiasco. When I first got my captivate, I was shocked to see that samsung didn't provide a desktop software cd that would allow your pc to download and push updates similarly with blackberrys and the blackberry manager software or iphone with itunes. For that reason alone is why i found myself on xda trying to find out how to update. I now know that is what the samsung lies is for. But that could still be provided with the phone for the average end users who don't rom their phone.

ODIN ONE CLICK (and ODIN3) are utilities made by Samsung, and how it was compiled is unknown, SO.. it cannot be "torn apart" and redone with froyo.
however there are some automated systems out, HEIMDALL and the new Captivate toolbox using HEIMDALL, may come out with easy froyo flashes,
and dont forget about froyo's 3e recovery, updated rooting, updated unlock, ect... it just adds more things to do to load a new custom rom..
so unless you want to flash froyo stock and leave it there, there isnt much point.
I am keeping a copy of the stock froyo firmware in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=963403 Just in case I need to send it back. I have used Heimdall to flash it a couple of times so far.

Wait, so I can just flash that prior to sending my phone to ATT as opposed to odin to JF6 then Kies to KB1?
Something like this would definitely be handy.
+2 a Odin kb1 would make life easyer

Maybe, :-/
It depends on what you end up with when you flash it... as there are only the four (cache.rfs, factoryfs.rfs, modem.bin and zImage) files in there. if the rom you flashed has other stuff that won't get over written I guess you might ind up with some sort of Franken ROM and worst case a brick. If you arn't sure what you have done to or have on your phone then I guess you ask in your roms help thread what is the approved method of returning to stock from their rom... some have various lagfixes and such that can require a specific procedure.
Even Odin leaves behind remnants of things from your previous usage. I just sent two phones back and had to Odin both. I then did master clear and still there was some stuff left that I had to delete manually. I doubt AT$T has the manpower or time to go through every returned phone looking for custom ROM remnants. To insulate them from any claims of having access to a customer's private information that may have been left on the phone by a less tech savvy user, they probably just wipe them when they get them or toss them in a bin to be used as repair parts.

Odin Stock Restore Stuck at Partition

So it seems like the first time stuck so it restarted, now it's stuck at partition. I selected the PIT and the PDA stock file, but it's just sitting there ... I'm on the phone + PC logo.

So I've been able to use the 512 pit and get it to get back to the "Downloading... Do not turn off Target". ... but then when I go back in and try to flash the stock Rooted ROM I get the "Initialization..." then it just stops there... ideas?
not sure. let it sit for a while. h8rift or somebody said it took his like 20 minutes(if i remember right) which seems weird. also you should be logged in windows as admin and the usb plugged into a port that connects to the mother board not a expansion card or hub.
honestly though i have only used heimdall on the infuse. and never repartitioned because heimdall requires bootloaders for repartition. im not sure i trust lost1's bootloaders and if there is an issue with them there are no others to use.
it might be a driver issue. maybe samsung needs some updated drivers for the infuse.
also are you sure you have your .net framework up to date on windows? i cant think of everything odin depends on but i think having .netframework4 helps with some things on the phone, cant remember ifodin depends on it though

cant hurt to leave it there a little longer. the captivate never took that long but we also had a true factory flash oneclick odin that they use to reset refurbished phones. no such luck on the infuse unless someone wants to see if designgears has some sort of connection at samsung who can get it like he somehow was able to get it for the captivate. the significance of odin oneclick is that is has all the files. param.ifs, boot.bin, sbl.bin, and all the first boot scripts. our stock roms have come from rom dumps. the captivate stock roms came from samsung.
i would leave it for a good 20 minutes. then try something else. you may need to try files from lost1's stock rom you can use 7zip to manipulate the .tar files and magic ISO to manipulate the .rfs files within the .tar files, but atleast one ofthe files from lost1 doesnt work. if i had 2 infuses id experiment with you to be able to post what works and what doesnt. with only one phone im hesitant to try anything that is not tested

I'm using H8rift's restore... and both of the two (rooted and non) have the same issue for me.
It just sits... I've used the rooted and non-rooted.... ugh.
It goes to firmware update start then has a little greenness in the progress bar on the computer, and a little blueness in the progress bar on the phone, but I let it sit for 30 minutes and it never progresses any further, so there's something going on.
I've tried other usb ports, updated drivers, every method of compatibility and admin mode, even reinstalled windows basic version, haha.... ugh, this is hopeless.
I think it's time to chalk this up to a very very expensive lesson learned and go out and buy a replacement... not happy about that :-(

Why did you use a .pit? Did I not state in the OP of the Odin thread not to use one? take out the .pit, uncheck re-partition and flash the package as it was originally attended. you will NEVER need to re-partition your phone until we actually start CHANGING your partitions sizes (i.e. CM7, MIUI, possibly Samsung's gingerbread, etc.)

YOU CAN GO TO MY DROPBOX PUBLIC PAGE AND DOWNLOAD FILES YOU MAY NEED HERE (CHARGE ROOT)
Use the updated steps found here for rooting your charge. (ROOTING GUIDE).

Your welcome and once again, good job!
I think the intention behind this is great, but I do worry that including PST, Heimdall, and two different builds of Odin is going to lead to more confusion, not less, for new people. You'd be better off just including one build of Odin and Heimdall, I think.
I'm not sure why people even use PST, as it's just needlessly complicated.

Some people use PST and seem to get it to work better then Odin. I myself have never used it. The 2 version of Odin are for future and retro builds that some of the devs use. And Heimdall was a preference thing. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll talk to the rest of the devs today and revize the package. v2 coming out tonight.
CHARGE KIT v2 now ready for download.
Update:
latest ODIN
Stock Froyo, Stock Gingerbread.
Smaller download
Like was stated before, the intention is good. You may want to think about having a separate kit for both froyo and gingerbread. I can see someone now flashing gingerbread and the voodoo kernel.

help me please im a noob
just rooted my phone using this package. it went well used odin newest version with cmw voodoo kn the newest cmw folder and it did good but read that there was no kernel so i wanted to put on the peanut butta one and i followed the directikns but couldnt put it jb recovery mode so i downloaded the clockwork mod off the app store and used the option on that to put in recovery mode but all it did was restart the phone and now it gets stuck on the samsung logo . can anyone please help sorry for being such a noob thought i had it figured out. thanks yall. my email is [email protected] thats the best way to get a hold of me thanks again. awesome site. loving the support
I'm gessing you are trying to get back into "recovery" so hold down vol up + home key + power You will see samsung . Continue holding. It will come go away then come back. When you see samsung the second time. let go of all three buttons. It will finish by booting into recovery. From there use the kernel .zip file that you saved to your sdcard and flash. All set, you now have the kernel of your choosing.
Great idea. You should include the charge PIT file as well.

Add back factory fonts?

I found a system dump of stock charge and found the fonts and know I need to use Root Explorer to put in the correct folder. I just want the 3 fonts you can change to in the display settings. When I look at the stock fonts folder it list a alot of them. Am I not looking in the right folder for the fonts?
If you're checking /system/fonts you're in the right place. =) The reason there are more than three is because the phone uses variations of the same font for headings and such (bold, italicized, etc.)
Thanks I loaded a different Rom which turns out to be laggy and battery sucks. So if I go back I atleast know I had the right fonts folder to transfer them.

If you're up for something new. Id give GC fe 2.0 a try with the ep1w radios. Its been great for me. But it is all personal preference. just a suggestion.
And you could try re-callibrating your battery too. It would help with the battery life regardless of rom.

Ok whats GC fe 2.0? (gummy charged)
I just went into clockwork and deleted stats. Gonna let it discharge and then charge. That's how you do it right? I still forget how to do stuff. I came from BB, had the Thunderbolt which was z4root or oneclick lol. All the same I guess just different steps. I stuck with Odin for the start.
Yes it is. =) It's kind of a long read, but you should really take a look at this thread over on rootzwiki:
http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?4643-HOW-TO-quot-Clean-quot-install-GummyCharged-FE-2.0&
It does a good job of explaining almost everything you need to know about flashing roms and how to do it; and is specifically tailored to fe 2.0. You should be able to skip to step three on the thread, but feel free to read the entire thing if you like. It also shows you how to re-calibrate your battery and mentions other tweaks you could make as well. =) If that's too boring, feel free to ask some questions and i'll try to answer them the best I can.
Cool Ill give it a read. I read before and it explained it all but still get screwed up with kernel and radio. Forget we have 2 radio's. I used to use Clockwork all the time dont know why I did want to use it now. Will check that out and what do you think about Humble 4.22? Dang I ask alot of questions. It says to do 4.2 then 4.22 but says 4.2 to do it Odin. Thought you couldnt do .zip files? I downloaded it so do I just rename it? Also to use Odin I never had luck keeping battery in to get to download mode, always just used cable.
Well we have a lot of radios, but the newest is the E3PH. Humble 4.22 looks like a great ROM, I personally haven't tried it because I like where I'm at. But give it a try, a lot of people seem to like it. To get on it you need to:
1. place the humble 4.22 on your sdcard.
2. unzip the humble 4.2 odin you downloaded and flash that.
Side note: I always remove my battery to get the phone into download mode, then i make sure to put it back in before i begin to flash. I also remove my sim card just to be safe.
3. Boot your phone up once to make sure everything's alright. Turn it back off and charge to 100%.
4. Go into CWM; wipe cache, dalvik, and data (just to be safe) and also wipe your battery stats (if you charged your phone completely).
5. install the humble 4.22 zip you placed on your sdcard and you should be ready to go.
6. Enjoy restoring all your apps. haha.
Thanks for your help. If I dont like what Im on now think I will try Humble and then GC. Did the quick read part and will go back but it explains alot.

[Q] So confused...

I have completely screwed my phone. I have rooted and ROM'ed at least 5 Android phones in the past.
This one is simply ridiculous.
I have used ODIN and had no problems. Now when I flashed my rom through CWM it just flashes a Samsung screen.
I have redone everything 10 times I am doing everything correctly.
I have tried different ROMs different kernels, same thing every time.
I am lost, and need help PLEASE!
Did you flash a pit file? Repartitioning usually does the trick.

No, you just do not know what your doing, simple as that. Tons of people here and elsewhere have no problems. You haven't listed what roms and kernels you are trying. My guess is either using froyo rom with GB kernel or not using odin right, it's pretty easy to use but also easy to get wrong, I suggest actually taking some time to learn what to do and what everything is. It's evident you are very impatient by your constant posts in this thread and their content which implies you didn't take the proper time to research what you are doing and how it all works. With some actual useful information like rom and kernel we could probably help
I've been researching this phone and the tools for a week now, and started this process at 1PM, so no im not impatient.
This phone is a piece. It was bad when it came out and it still is crap. I've rooted, Rom'ed and modded every Android phone I've ever had with no issue. Different carriers, different manufacturer's. Never had an issue.
Now, thanks for the lecture Dad, if you have any insight as to why my phone will not boot up after flashing the pit file it would be much appreciated, if not, troll somewheres else.
Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken when you use a pit file you have to Odin a new rom right after. It wipes everything off the partitions.but I've only used a pit one time so may be wrong . The first few times I flashed this phone I had problems but eventually I caught everything that usually causes a problem. And I was just like you, had been flashing evo, incredible and hero for a long time with no problem. But Samsung gave me a headache. But i was stuck in a bootloop and nothing would flash. I ran the pit then flashed a new tar file and she booted up fine

It was given to me by my job. I didn't have a choice if I wanted my bill paid for every month.
Ok, so I have tried:
0808_charge_overclock
NAMELESS_Kernel_Cleanup_Script
ROMS i have tried:
Altered BeastAlpha 5
Eclipse_TW4_v1.1
humble50_rc2
At this point it will not charge or boot up into anything so I'm not sure if it's even recoverable right now....where should I even start?

Well since u partitioned with the pit. Ur phone is sitting there with nothing on it. No rom, no kernel, recovery etc. So i know humble 5 wont work cuz it doesn't include a kernel. Humble 4 will however work. It includes a kernel and a recovery .have u did everything in the "Hoe to fix your phone "thread on top of development section?

I've had problems at times getting my phone into download mode. Just gonna toss some stuff out there as I'm sure there are people that know more than me. Is there anyway you can have a charged or extra battery charged? I would hmm uninstall the samsung drivers etc..or atleast re install so your phone is recognized when you plug it in the usb. So you can get your phone into download mode and Odin doesnt see it? Have you followed the directions in the stickys on the Dev page to a T? Im sure you have tried all usb ports, different cable, hell different computer. If you still can't get it back up as many have posted they haven't seen to many totally bricked phones I would love to have something to just play around with. If you dont have insurance and cant get it exchanged let me know. Pretty sure though more people will chime in and get things working though.
