storage issues - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

it's well known the one xl has very limited storage. with 16gb to start, 2.34 gb to internal (1.95 gb available on mine), 9.93 gb phone (821mb available on mine), and the other 4~ish gb ????, i only have room for another app or two a few pictures and a few songs. anybody come up with a good solution for this? other than cloud storage? i like music... A LOT, so i prefer to keep it on the phone to save data and battery. and i like a little freedom with my apps and pics.

Wrong forum. This belongs in Q&A, not Development.

Cloud storage. Mind you I have nearly 600 pics and 3 gigs of music and I still have 4 gigs left.plus all my app are installed.

If I were a huge media user I'd get one of those goflex wireless drives.

Here a link they sound awesome, but I wouldn't use that much space, cloud works good for me.

Also airstash looks promising for half the price and add your own SD Card.

it's a damned shame that it looks like OTG won't work for us since the USB port doesn't supply power.

[Q] How is htc gonna put a full filesystem on 1 gb of internal memory?

One of the things that bug me about the sensation is the ridiculous amount of internal memory it has, i now we'll be using the sd card most of the time, but i cannot stop wondering how is htc gonna do to fit the whole filesystem on 1 gb of internal memory? i currently have an inspire 4g and even using a rom without the at&t bloatware i only have available 1.2 gb of the internal memory's 4 gb
I'm pretty sure the 1gb is just for apps. Then system stuff has its own partition, then some left over for user storage

It has 4GB internal memory, of which 1gb can be accessed by the user
I'm pretty sure it has 1gb, the evo3d has 4.
For what I know there will be 550mb free, there should be a video showing it.

The evo 3d has 1 gig of memory 3 inaccessible to the user. The g2 had the same so did the my touch 4g same as always with HTC. They always had 4 gig rom.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Yes, but they also have 4gb rom on the spec sheet. Or 1.x gb accessible to user. The sensation only has 1gb rom according to specs.

I honestly doubt that HTC has 1 gig rom only alone since we actually have 1 gig accessible to the user. That already makes 2. The spec sheet is wrong on that aspect every one thought that g2 had 4 gigs of space but it only had 1 usable by us.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
You might be right but every phone on the htc site has the physical/ total memory on the spec sheet. For example the desire has 512mb accordion to spec, well that is not the free space accessible to the user. I highly doubt this is any different for the sensation.
Also a Dutch tech site wrote, after a hands on at mwc, that the free memory was 550mb with a total memory of 1gb.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
The g2 does have a 4gig internal chip same as the sensation. But because of the way the chip is set up and way files are stacked it basically is a 2gig but read and writes faster. So there is 2gig total basically but radio and system pretty leave roughly 1 gig. No big deal though.

It says : "768 MB RAM, 4 GB Internal Storage (1 GB user addressable)"
I think that 1 Go for apps (+ legal App 2 Sd) and the 8 Go microSD are widely enough.

Damn, moving from 16GB internal (Vibrant) to 1GB internal is going to be a pain, but I'll handle it.

But even the 16gb internal vibrant wasn't true app installable since it was 16 internal sdcard. Vibrant only truly used 2gb for apps.
That said, when I dropped my POS Vibrant for a G2, I was disappointed by only having 1.13gb internal for apps, but I've never gone above 500mb, that's roughly 170 apps which is nuts for a phone anyway. Lol, I'd rather have the 1gb of ram that everyone else its getting.

Has this finally become "THE" phone?

All the negativity aside...
Has this phone become the perfect phone for everybody?
With Stock 2.3.3 working great with every feature, rooted stock roms, easy to flash any roms, has the g2x finally become the phone we always thought it would be?
There may be some people who always thought this was the best phone out but can we finally say it without a shadow of a doubt?
I may be biased but this is a pretty damn good phone.

All it needs is 16-32gb internal storage and maybe 1gb of ram and it would have been future proof for a lonnnnnnnng time. Still it is a great phone just released too early.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I agree on the ram part for sure....
I would have been set for a long time. The internal storage doesn't bother me so much with micro SD cards dropping in price. A 32GB card shouldn't be too expensive soon or now for that matter.
Sent from my LG-P999
Honestly I would have been ok too with the g2x had it not been for the partitioning of internal storage, it's confusing and not needed when most people already own 16 or 32gb external sdcards and prefer installing everything to internal.
For some people 1gb is more than enough for apps/games, but with the market allowing dev's to increase the size of its product 1gb of internal is not enough and gets used up very quickly!
Can't really complain about anything else cuz this phone is beast!

It comes standard with apps2sd. Most apps can be moved to sd so just do that and free up the 1gb internal. With apps2sd capability I think 1gb for apps is more than generous.
i loved this phone from the get-go but i received it with gingerbread pre-installed and tried to wait out a lot of the big bugs. my device has some noticeable screen bleed and a little bit of lagginess but other than that this phone is amazing! i don't miss my old phone at all. it is practically perfect to me

+1 some people don't understand how Linux handles memory.
Vibrant+MIUI -> G2X
It's a great phone IF it's rooted or lucky enough to be bug free on stock. The general consumer might not be into rooting, and that bugged-launch debacle hit the phone's reputation hard. Also, I'm curious whether LG's failure to make some drivers open will be a big problem for devastating or just an annoyance (I'm not a dev, so I honestly don't know how big a problem it is).
Having said that, I think my rooted G2x is a great phone. Running Eagles Blood on it now, might switch to Weapons soon just for ****s and giggles. And might throw this Nexus S on eBay to go G2x full time.

No, some people just like having as many apps or games installed as they prefer without running low on ram and lagging.
Not everyone is fine with just installing 5-10 apps, I and plenty others DO understand how Linux uses memory. Coming from the mt4g 768mb-1gb ram is the sweet spot IMHO.

Please explain how simply installing more apps on your phone uses more RAM (significantly more, not just because the launcher has to maintain a KB or two more data or something similar).
Because a lot of apps still run in the backround (even if your using a taskkiller, they will just turn back on thus consuming ram, and that's also just how linux uses it's ram) With me installing all apps/games i usually have around 50-60mb free ram which is still enough and i don't experience much lag if any, but i do plan on buying and installing more apps/games thus the reason 768-1gb ram is more preferable in the long run.

I don't know, mine wasn't rooted and worked just awesome. Smooth, no lag, no bugs. I've just recently rooted it, but no roms just yet. Still trying to decide which I want, lol. I haven't heard many bug reports since GB came out. But it is a shame the bad rep it got before. A friend of mine got it when it first came out...i've yet to convince him it's worth getting now. Gotta try to get him to actually test it out, lol.

What to get next??

So I'm looking for my next phone.
I was all set to buy the One S but no expansion and removable battery.
The One X is too big.
So where do I go.
I want the One S but 12GB isn't going to cut it.
Whats coming and I am considering non HTC as I;m not big on the current direction.
Current favourite is Sony Xperia S but not completly convinced on this one is there anything coming soon worth waiting for?
Nothing in the very near future which would represent a noticeable upgrade from the sensation. Personally I'm waiting a bit longer.
Sent from the hell that is modern life.
Just hang on longer to the Sensation if you can't find anything. Mayne the SGS3?
If not, just keep the Sensaion and wait for better phones in Q3. Sensation is still a powerful piece of hardware

Nothing on the horizon yet...I'm still enjoying the S4G & Xda development section!
Im looking at the samsung galaxy s3 depending how quad core is handled with battery life, the one s was my next choice too until the no sd card and removable battery. One x is too big so im left with samsung s3.

I was thinking one S as well but like you said the low amount of storage has put me off it. I mean, the non-removable battery I could live with but only 16 gb's of storage....HTC, what are you thinking???
One X isn't a phone it doesn't fit in many pockets easily far a start.
Nice screen for movies and browsing but a little too impracticable for everyday life.
I go into the highlands in Scotland a lot what use is 25GB of dropbox if you can't access it.
A mobile device is for when your out and about we don't all live in London with permanent 3G and WiFi hotspots around every corner and that's when you want to access the content.
Have you tried streaming on a train or down the motorway in my experience you get crap connection speeds when moving at speed.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA
I absolutely agree with you. My concerns are the same. Everyone around me was impressed about this 25GB of storage with dropbox and I know for instance Three UK offer "all you can eat data" plan but they are the only one (as far as I know) and other carriers have their limit. And not to talk about still having gprs and edge connection in many area what I can't even use to fart on it... Anyway, brilliant phone is the One X but I still love my sensation and I'm sure I will sit on this phone till something similar will be released...

After seeing the specs of the EVO LTE and the European ONE X I was greatly displeased and turned off by the ONE S. EVERY nextgen flagship phone coming out seems to crush it spec wise.
given the fact that i have had multiple HTC phones I have no faith in their ability to make a battery that is sufficient for the phone it supports. So to embed a paltry battery like the one in the ONE S was an immediate deal killer. Then to find out about the memory too...it was not even a second thought.
As for blaming HTC, I have seen the light. The new EVO will be a beast. There is an on board 16 gig memory PLUS its expandable for an additional 32 gig. There is also a 2000 Ma battery if I am not mistaken. HTC "can" make a desireable phone, but T-mo has not required nor demanded a game-changer or a true flagship from them which is sad. Until t-mo stops slacking we will have to sit out cycles (like now) or switch to other brands.
I think I will be sticking with my Sensation until Q3 or Q4. So I won't regret any purchase because by that time all of the flasghip from every manufacturer has already been released. The sensation is still too powerful anyway.

I my self love my current One-x phone but if i could have asked for anything different it would have been the storage space. I still havent filled up my current one-x but just knowing that the phone has plenty of space is a good comfort feeling. Ultimately this phone wouldnt make me jump to try and sell my current one, but it sure would have been nice to have more than 16 (12 useable) gigs of space.
The storage and bigger battery hurt some. The processor boost is whatever, but I am constantly having to pull stuff off my phone because I am out of storage and that extra 17% of battery capacity would have made it so I make it home every night before my phone dies.

Agree. During the $.25 sale i realized how little space we have on our phone! I ran out of space after buying FIFA, Mass effect and batman. I never thought i would run out of space on my phone but 14GB seems too little now.
32 would be ideal, 64 perfect.
I'm not a big fan of tegra 3 because of its battery consumption. I prefer cortex 15 based s4 which is very efficient.
The battery and rom is the only thing that i wish i had.

Is it possible to do a hardware mod for an sd card, the 10gig on my att one x is barely cutting it, but I have a class 10 32GB from my evo 3d I want to use, but I don't know if it can be done. I've looked for teardowns but I don't see enough detail. Any help is appreciated

USB otg is probably the simplest way to use an sdcard now that ROMs support it
