Ongoing Wi-Fi Toggle Notification in the Verizon Galaxy S3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Just found this on Droid-Life. No one else has seemed to mention this occurring. Does anyone else have an ongoing ("Turn on WiFi") notification on their Verizon GS3?

Not only do I have this, but when I'm at home with my wifi turned off on my phone, but available throughout the house, I keep getting asked to turn on my wifi on my phone. It says:
Known Wi-Fi network available. Connect?
OK
Always auto connect
Not now, remind me later
Excuse me Verizon and your mucking around with my phone. I have unlimited data so I use it instead of wifi. Deal with it. Quit asking me to use wifi. I have it turned off for a reason.

Its seriously been bugging me.

Settings > more settings > mobile networks > uncheck "automatic connections"
Problem solved. Has been discussed a ton already...

I can't find that option on my Verizon S3.
I find it seriously annoying too. My plan is to use every single bit of my unlimited 4G data that I can since they're jerking me around with their unlimited plan.
Any other suggestions?

Yeah from what I hear, big red disabled that option so it's more or less forced on you.

Anyone figured out a way to disable this in the Verizon ROM, assuming you have root access?
Is there an app doing it or something?

Probably flash a custom rom, this has honestly been the only reason I'm a little upset about my phone right now.

You can, though.
I have root right now. There are guides on how to do it in the Verizon Development subforum.
It's basically just flashing a (large) pre-rooted system.img file in ODIN.
This also doesn't appear to set off the flash counter either and seems to be safe for all of us who have done it.

Okay, since I don't have my phone yet, I'm a little confused....
Does the notification just sit in the notification pull down or does it actually notify you every time you run an app to switch to WiFi? You know, like a notification sound and message flashing in the notification area?
If it's just sitting there, whatever. If it comes up every time you do anything regarding data and tries to tell you to go on WiFi, well, that's f**king annoying.

There is a setting to disable notification when using high data usage apps

wi. fi tether question

Hi, I'm using the wi-fi tether that came with the fresh Rom. It works great but I can't get it to turn off. Anyone know how to make it turn off? Also. Will sprint charge me for using this? Thanks.

When you touch the screen again (while it says "Touch To Stop Tethering") it wont stop???
Does SuperUser have anything listed for permisions??? You can open that app from the app tray and see what it has listed.
Maybe superuser isn't letting you run the script files that disable it.
EDIT:
Forgot the other half of the question... Sprint will only charge you..possibly...if you go over 5GB. Otherwise they cannot tell you are doing this, looks like regular phone data to them.

Sprint won't charge you if you have unlimited data plan, 5g cap is only for broadband cards.

I've never had an issue. On the iPhone (not jailbroken) you have to call AT&T to activate. On this one, you get an information tag above the activate checkbox saying:
A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please go to att.com/myWireless or dial 611 if you do not already have this service provisioned.

I've been using that on my Captivate for 7 or 8 months now, AT&T has never billed me. I'm not extravagant in my usage. The highest net data I've used is 4.5GB, but that's for both normal and tethered use. I've never been dinged.
I think if it becomes obvious, torrent or otherwise, then they may try to do something. But as far as I know, there is no way to distinguish the traffic of your phone from that of the connected devices.
My suggestion is try it for a small burst of data, note the time. Reboot your phone after. Then check your account online after a day or two and see whats listed under your data use.
You guys should try a custom apn similar to the captivate and atrix.

Ok... I tried this again after I posted the message. Something seems to have changed in my account. Now I get a "Verifying" message and then a note that says tethering is not available. My guess is that we'll have to replace the IP/Stack to not request verification information from AT&T.
So, sorry, no go yet.

guys MOBILE AP in settings! that's native wifi teather ap stands for access point. there is an apk you need to delete or freaze to do it without the tethering plan. ill get details from captivate section and report back.

I agree with Dani897, this will ultimately be a matter of replacing the AT&T Modded Wifi AP with the google stock version.

in titaniumbackp if you are rooted freeze ir uninstall "tetheringmanager0326.apk" should unlock it. you can also delete it from adb, rootexplorer, other root file managers as long as you mount read write in terminal emulator, or you can use terminal emulator.
i have a linux machine and use sshdroid to ssh into the phone. that's another way to do it if you get a windows application that handles ssh.

Verizon GPS Locking Up?

I searched through the Q&A about the S3 GPS, and I couldn't find a similar case to this. Hopefully it's out there.
My job involves a lot of driving, and I use my GPS for literally everything because most of the places are pretty far out there. I've used a Motorola Droid X and an HTC Incredible perfectly for this. The GPS would lock and maintain a signal, and get me there with no problem.
On my Verizon S3, I have an odd issue. It'll take much longer to lock in, and when it finally does, it seems to just freeze up after a few minutes. It'll be stuck on the same remaining time, the cursor will be on the same point in the road despite having passed it, and the distance to the next turn won't update. A little bit afterwards, it'll say signal lost and try searching for the GPS again.
I tried turning power saver off, checking the location services on and off, and yes, I turned it off and back on.
I thought it was an issue due to a preemptive rooting of my phone, so I came home early today and reinstalled the stock ROM. I tried the GPS again, and it had the same exact issue despite not being rooted this time.
Is there any fixes out there, or tutorials, or something that could be causing this? Thanks. Will click the thanks button the video beat over my head.
If it is doing it consistently take it back and do an exchange. I have sold two Galaxy S 3s on Sprint and was able to get a lock in a building pretty quick. I have the Galaxy S 2 and my first one had similar GPS issues. I just did a warrenty replacement for it not charging and GPS on this new Galaxy S 2 is great.

Samsung galaxy phones have been know for GPS issues. Sounds like you got a bad one. You will make yourself go nuts trying to find fixes for it, like I did. Get another one and see what happens, even if it is a pain to get another one.

Alright, I appreciate the quick help. My dad is currently remaining vigilant in his demand to go through tech support first, so he's working on that. If that fails, I'll definitely try getting another Galaxy. Hopefully I can actually find one.
Maybe they WILL fix it, who knows! Probably not, though.
Question is still open if anyone has any ideas.

Oh christ. Dad just finished with the tech support. They literally just told him to check the location settings to see if everything was checked(which it was when the problem was occurring). Even took it for another test drive and the same problem.
This really does suck sort of, I love the phone but GPS is essential. I hope I can just replace it.
If they give you a hard time return it and go somewhere else to buy it. You have 14 days to return it without breaking contract. Go into the store and see how their display model works.

I had similar problem and just went to Verizon store today for it. The "technical specialist" had ZERO clue. He didn't even know where the location settings are. Anyway, after I showed him the problem in the store he ordered a replacement for me. Didn't even challenge me about trying to use it indoor, or having the WiFi turned off etc. I also tried the demo units they had in store and they all locked instantaneously.
It was pretty easy and I'm glad it's over. I've spent hours trying to figure out whether I'm crazy or the phone is crazy.
Good luck.

At one point of my testing I turned on VZW location service in location setting and it locked immediately. I was out in the open. I then tried toggling it multiple time, before and after rebooting the phone. It never helped again. I'm guessing in a normal situation it could help locking but it does fix my defective GPS.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

Or you can change the user agent for your browser and just use wifi tethering as you normally would. It is a pretty simple fix.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.

Every time I try to connect to the Internet it gives me the message 'your plan does not include tethering, contact us to upgrade you sevice' etc etc, but I'm not tethering it nor am I trying to ,
Can anybody help me out because it's driving us nuts now

My first reaction if it happened to me would be to reset the phone and/or call customer service.

What did customer service say ? Sounds like this is an issue on their end.

Went through the settings, cleared some stuff, not much really, sounded as if he was just reading it from the screen,
It worked once after that, it went to the Google home screen but when I typed in a search it came back with the tethering message

I'd call back.
Maybe it's possible your mobile browser is sending the incorrect User Agent (I don't even know how) - does this happen no matter which browser you use ? What if you uninstall and re-install the browser ?
If that doesn't work, I think it's their problem that they need to fix.

Weird. I'm sorry I don't have any more ideas to help. Giving you a bump in case someone else does.
Is there anything changed from stock in your phone at all?

I had exactly the same problem with my S2. I ended up selling it.

Wow you sold it just for that lame IMO all you would have to do is return it to stock and that should fix the problem
