Hey everyone. So I've been rolling VI since almost day one when I bought my Sensation used in February. Coming from AOSP roms on my old Desire, I wanted a similar experience. It's been running extremely smooth and it basically runs anything I throw at it.
However, I'm starting to get an itch to try out some of the new Sense 4 ROMs that have been popping up of late. I used to love Sense on the Desire, but felt it slowed down the phone considerably compared to AOSP builds (Sense 3.X especially).
Are there any performance drags by going to a Sense 4 rom? I'd love the extra features, but I also highly value snappy performance. Also I'd love to hear a few suggestions of solid Sense 4.0 ROMs to try. From what I can see, PKMN, Insertcoin, and Ordroid are popular choices?
Any thoughts? Much appreciated
There is indeed a performance drag on every sense 4 rom I've tried (all of them). Its not that they're laggy or anything but moving from application to application has a one or two second delay, sometimes more, so the roms are just kind of slower. Just do a nandroid backup and try it out.
Most people will tell you there isn't any kind of speed issue but if you favor performance like I do, you'll see it instantly.
I don't notice a problem with sense 4, in fact its very nice. Download and judge for yourself. I think you will
Be suprised on how nice they are. If you don't care for it, no harm done, just flash back. Its always best to try for yourself and make your own conclusion. Best of luck.

I've had a similar experience .. After a couple of months during which I (happily) used VI, the urge to flash was too strong.. and since VI wasn't updated any more I started trying the main roms on the forum..
Sense 4 is very nice, but I'm very sensible to smoothness and speed and imho senseless aosp rom are by far the best at the moment.
Now I've been using berserk for a while and It has become my daily driver

Running BAMF 1.0.7 and was wondering if anyone has tried this? Also noticed it's a much smaller file than most roms
Its as fast and basic as you want it to be with a lot of customization options. Just upgraded from 2.6 and I'm loving it. For battery life I don't think there's a better choice.
Edit: I should note that coming from my other android phones the htc sense interface pretty much makes my skin crawl, so those have never been options for me.

Just loaded it today and it is very nice. Very fast, smooth and lots of features.
AOSP ROMs are going to be much smaller in size than Sense ROMs, averaging 100 MB or so.
This ROM is excellent. Very fast!

Been running it since prerelease betas. It was good enough for a daily back then. Now its just stunning. Arguably the best aosp rom available...
My name is Revos I'm a recovering flashaholic running Liquid Gingerbread 3.0
Having owned an original HTC Desire, there are huge advantages to rooting it etc. It's biggest fault was its poor internal memory storage therefore low disk space was always an issue when it came to installing apps as stock. Therefore rooting allows use of the EXT of the sd card thus increase memory available. In addition, the Desire was left behind restricted to Froyo with only a poor Gingerbread and lacking sense 3.0 update to be released by HTC.
But now after becoming the owner of a Desire S I am less inclined to mod it! These previous issues are gone, with 1GB of internal storage it is far more than sufficient. Gingerbread and Sense 3.0 is the shipped software, with lets be honest not a whole of difference in comparison to 3.5.
Overclocking is never something I have seen necessary, my Saga runs smooth and I don't experience any lag etc so this bonus with rooting I have no interest with.
Therefore I propose to you, why made you decide to root and flash custom roms on your Saga?
What benefits have they brought that you believe are essential? Or are you just a bit of a modding junkie
Thanks for taking your time to read my thread, I hope you guys can share with me some of your opinions and feedback received here can help less eager users like myself!
I just hated Sense...
+1. I bought the phone because it was cheaper than the equivalent phone from another company. Also the build quality was much better. Although I didn't mind sense I planned to switch to cyanogenmod as soon as it became available (thanks superkid )

Well, for me it was something completely opposite of you both, i wanted Sense 3 on my device with the awesome lockscreen and carousel-like home screen. I first saw that on my friend's DHD, who helped me A LOT in flashing my first ROM.
I too came from a Desire... And I too was impressed by the improvement the Desire S is compared to the Desire. It was very good just out of the box.
However, I missed the little tweaks I made using the miui rom. For some reason I felt the Miui rom to be more intuitive, more adaptable to my quircky needs... With the Miui rom I can just tweak the way it looks more precisely. I want another lock screen, fine, just change the lock screen. Another launcher, another font, another .... you get the drift.
I was a great fan of Sense. Tried several CM and non-sense roms, but I just ended up missing Sense. The non-sense were lightning fast, but still missed the good feel of sense. Then I tried Miui and now I wonder where the rom was all that time...
That's why I Rom my DesireS...
Grtz,

I love build quality of HTC phones and extremely hate anything that is overbloated. Sense is a queen of bloatware. It was nice to have it on HTC Hero (v1,6) UNTIL i've found CyanogenMod. Since than all my phones (Hero, Legend, G2, *Failation*, DS) were powered by CM. Fast, functional and simple. This what Android is meant to be.

Many reasons:
Get rid of operator software
Get rid of HTC Sense
Overclocking
Upgrade to the newest Android Version
Other minor reasons: remote control, screen captures...
First of all: Titanium backup (which requires root).
The phone before my Desire S was also running android, so I wanted to restore my apps.
Reason 2: Custom roms + custom recovery.
I wanted to try out sense 3.0 (The official update was way later than a fully working custom ROM) and custom ROM's tend to have better performance and more fixes compared to official releases due to custom kernels etc.
Reason 3: Remove bloatware
Reason 4: Make all apps work, even those that require root.

With Desire S stock - 100% satisfied
Modded Desire S - 200% satisfied.
Also I recommend sense 3.5, much much better than 3.0. It adds more functionality
It's been tweaked a hell lot better and about 50% faster than 3.0. Trust me. You will feel the difference.
Trust me, I was like you when I first got my desire S.
It did all I wanted. What more could I want?
Then I decided to just try rooting and see what it was like.
Then after rooting, with ROMs etc, it made the phone much much better.

1. i'm new to rooting/flashing android phones. my phone prior to the DS was the Wildfire. I had it for a little over a year and it remains 100% stock to this day so i wanted to experiment on the DS. I was originally gonna go for the Sensation XE was since I'm new to rooting, It'd hurt less if i bricked the DS compared to the Sensation XE
2. to get rid of the extra stuff like plurk, twitter etc that i don't even use.
3. it's FUN!
Because once you started s-offing and rooting and changing roms, you wont be able to stop. Because there are some feelings that came with it. Escpecially overclocking thing.

i haven't tried overclocking my DS just yet. I dunno, maybe it's just not my thing but to each his own i'm sure i'll give it a whirl just to test it. but gotta read up on it a lot first before i actually try it. ROM wise, i'm currently using Endymion 3.1 and it's VERY nice indeed happy new year in advance to everyone
theres nothing to worry if you overclock your ds. i tried to overclocked my phone up to 1.6ghz and battery temp is still at 34. Im currently on MikRunny Rom

Do it
you won't regret it
or just use 3.0 for a while longer and see where you would like improvements, then when you get bored use 3.5
I rooted because T-mobile took ages to update to Sense 3, and I new ICS was coming and I would want to switch to CM9 asap. Now running Superkid/MDJ's ROM, despite a few bugs very usable, no going back for me, only forward to a (once again) fully working ROM. Also, I thought Sense 2.5 was quite fluent, appreciated the more fluent sense 3.0, but it lags like hell compared to AOSP ICS
1. Apps, that needs ROOT.
2. Other ROMS, i always was interested in MIUI ROM.
3. Now ICS, I probably won't come back to Sense (maybe to 4.0)
One of the main reasons why i got into the unlocking and rooting business is because i hate being told what i cannot do with my own stuff. Kinda stinks "Apple" all over, and i hate that kind of cheap marketing. i bought a device with an open-source operating system for what? To be told that since my device has a non-open-source custom UI, i can't experiment with it (despite buying it out to the last penny)?
Screw that. I just wanted to S-Off and root for the heck of it. Hell, when i did that, there weren't even any good ROMs available for the DS, except a couple that i never liked much anyway. My reasons for S-off and rooting today have matured and changed from those days...but i still remember the anger i felt when i had found about s-on after purchasing my phone... (this was my first android, and i didn't know ANYTHING!!). But look at where we've come today...we have one of the the best performing beta ICS on any device, and if it were not for the camera, it would be good enough to be released as stable!
Would we have gotten this far with a locked bootloader?
So why did i root? Because HTC said i couldn't.
Because of apps which need root, because to get rid of bloatware which comes with Sense, because I simply wanted to do it.
I've started with CM, but I couldn't fix the GPS issue so I switched to some Runny ROMS. Now I'm a happy user of MIUI, which is for me the best mobile experience in my life
Hey guys I'm on Virtuous Inquisition 4.0 & I really love how smooth it is and its clean feel. Loved it enough to get rid of my gs2 as it makes my sensation so much more functional. But, I'm looking at buying Tmo's HTC one S when it arrives, so I'm wanting a good taste of sense 4.0 to see how I feel about it. What's your favorite sense 4.0 from, and what's the smoothest? I rely on my phone heavily for business, so I don't want something that will fail me, though I know there's always a risk
Looking forward to everyone's opinions, and thank you to all!
It's probably stick to Sense 3.6 ROM's for now if you need your phone to work.
Most of the hardware seems to be working in Sense 4.0 ROM's but I have read (haven't tried for myself) that they're still quite rough around the edges.

HTC has not released Sense 4.0 for the Sensation yet. and probably never will. Sense is garbage to begin with anyways. Use a non sense ROM. The experience is so much better and yoiu get nearly triple battery life. Sense freaking rapes battery.

Stay with Sense 3.6. If you need your phone for business. None of the 4.0 roms are close to ready. They function, but performance across the board is low. There's only so much devs can do, and those roms are not ready to go yet.
Im very Happy with senseissimo but very Bad battery Life :-(

So after a couple months of development and improvement, how are the Sense 4.0 ROMS running for everybody? At first, I heard news of bugs and features not working, but what are your experiences with the ROMS? Can anybody tell me how battery life and performance are changed from Sense 3.6 ROMS? Thank you .
For me sense 4 is workin like a charm,im using ordroid 8.2.0,i didnt find anything not workin for me,but battery life compared to virtuos inquistion is pretty much worse, that i can confirm.
But with my anker i get through whole day without problem.
Working fine. Better battery life than Sense 3.6 for me and better performance in some places.
It works fine but if you compare it let's say arhd it does have done lag specially when making transitions but overall it's great I prefer it over sense 3.6

I think sense 4.0 roms are awesome, great battery life and performance and massive aray of tweaks. Only bugs left are hdmi out and wi-fi tether
My sense 4 Rom is Ordroid 9.0.0, It's running wonderfully. The battery life is awesome , the tweaks and customization are awesome, very smooth , fast,
Very nice. Only one problem and that's tethering . I really miss being able to tether but not enough to install a different Rom. I've tried out several different sense 4 Roms but find myself going back to Ordroid . In my opinion nothing yet compares to it! I've not yet had one problem (other than tethering) its really a smooth Rom. I hope this helps some. It's really a very personal decision , and what fits your style and taste the best. But as for having sense 4 problems , not at all! It's been perfect! You really should try it out , I think you will be surprised at how smooth and fast it is! Also you will love the customization ability! I know I do! I think you will really love sense 4. Hope this helps out some and good luck in whatever you decide.

I don't want to start a bunch of trouble here I just want give my opinion. As a long time sense user from back when it was windows mobile 6.5 to my sensation that I loved so much. I always notice the battle between sense and aosp. I liked many things about both and that's why I was using hybrids. In the end we where all chasing something. The sensation had too much lag and not enough power to drive htc sense. Sense was cool but bulky and slowing it down. I guess I was in denial that I baught a great phone and it never turned out how I hoped it would. I also noticed how many people talking bad about Touch WIZ. So many people said such bad thing about it and Samsung that I never even thought about it. Well with all the problems I had i decided to jump ship to the Galaxy s4. Let me tell you how impressed I am with the performance and Touch Wiz. Touch wiz is like the best of both worlds and has such a great layout. Many feature I never new existed. I just want to share this with you and hope some of you can relate to my frustrations I had with htc. The grass is greener on the other side and I wish I hadnt been so conviced by what I hear everyone say here on xda. In the end they were just people's opinions just like mine. Goodbye sensation people we had a good run. Many of you helped me so much. Hope to see some of you on the other side.

Well, its hard to compare when you're comparing with Samsung's Top Notch Flagship.
I came from Samsung W, and boy I was so amazed by HTC I sworn I'll never go back to Samsung(unless its free or I just happen to pick one up somewhere).
From build quality to performance, (lets not compare S4, its completely overpowered), I can make my buddy with his S3 cry like a kid.
Sense Vs TouchWiz is strictly arguable, but I dare not say which is better. But when both placed beside AOSP its like child's play to me. Sense UI is known for its conveniences and functionality, and TouchWiz is more on userbased experience. So its never really comparable any way. And TouchWiz 3.0 is quite old already, so in the front of powerful device like S4, fluidity is a must or else Samsung better pack up.
All above is just my personal opinion. And the part about S3 is true because I can play most games more smoother on Senny(mostly because I have lots of RAM by killing nearly 50% of built in app in AOSP, never know. I get up to 300 free when I uninstalled default launcher)
of course, at least comparison should be fair.
take your time and compare S4 vs HTC One (on same chipsets).
I think it is really all based on individual opinion no matter where you go you will have lovers and haters in everything. It really just depends on what you like and what you use it for.
If you want to compare either do HTC sensation vs galaxy s2 or HTC one and galaxy s4. Either of those should be fair comparisons as they were from the same time period and is more fair than sensation vs s4. I think the problem you had with the sensation was the low ram and the (now) outdated processor
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I bet if you compare Sensation's with it's fake twin brother, Samsung S2, I'm willing to bet my left nut HTC will send Touchwiz home with a hat trick
sense vs touchwiz...
I cannot say which one is better but if you need eye candy with beautiness,Sense is much better but if you are a lover of nature or need something lite and easy to use,Touchwiz is better.
Wow you're telling the exact same story that happened to me I also was never really satisfied with my sensation's performence, even with AOSP ROMs. Some time ago I decided to buy a SGS4 and I was impressed by TW. It really is the best of both worlds, the functionality of a real UI like Sense and the speed and smoothness of AOSP. But still I have to say I somehow miss Sense. It's bulky but a very beautiful and elegant skin which worked super smooth even under 4.0.4 (Sense 4.1). And now I see that some devs are porting Sense 5 to the SGS4 and already have a working and pretty stable version of it and it makes me happy that I will be able to use Sense even though I'm not using HTC.
