[Q] Is the 7" screen good for reading? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking at buying this tablet just for reading (PDFs, web content), 3-4 hour periods. Is the screen good for reading, or will it tire my eyes quickly (like the iPad 1, 2)?
Not talking about white balance or contrast, more about the screen resolution (though this has 170 dpi over 130 on the old iPads).

If the ipad 10 inch screen tire you out quickly then I think the 7 inch tab 2 won't make things better, and I doubt better screen intensity (170 ppi or dpi) have any effect than overall look and sharpness of the images.
Altough in my personal opinion, reading and browsing in this tab 2 is far better than my previous experience in 4 inch x10i

Definitely giving it a thumbs up
So I got one yesterday.
It took me a good half a day to get used to the screen, but it's always like that for me when it comes to Samsung screens (no idea why).
At first the screen looks and feels pixelated, but you get used to it pretty fast. Not the brightest display either. PDFs look pretty bad on Polaris Office, but decent on Adobe Reader. Small text IS hard to read, so either get used to zooming-in or reading in landscape mode.
Kindle (app) works and looks great.
Other than that, Chrome works good, it has a hard time detecting when I tap the Omnibar, closing tabs is a bit slow and sometimes the text gets (and stays) blurry when zooming (haven't tried the default browser). Opera works fine.
The device reports about 4gb of available storage, plenty for books. Battery life is good (about 5-6 hrs of WiFi surfing), will know more when I use it more.

I prefer the 7 in tablets over the 10 in variety because I can hold it with one hand comfortably. Also because I have bifocals, I like to hold it closer to my face so I don't rest it on my knee like you might with a 10 in one.

mini review of Enspert Identity E201 tablet

I think a few people may have heard of this tablet. I have the tablet for 1 day now and here's my initial impression of the unit.
Build qaulity
Very nice much nicer than I thought it was going to be based on the pictures. The back is plastic (though looks like metal) but the edges around the entire tablet is aluminum. It's not built like an ipad but it feels close to being a mini -ipad. I dig how they used a cover to hide all the connections making the unit look clean and mininalistic. There is one problem though, the cover to the connections is not jointed to swivel. So to get access to the SD slot and HDMI, you have to open the cover, pull it out and then bend it back.
Front
There are 3 physical buttons on the of the tablet for home, back and menu. The buttons are not backlight and at first I thought that would be a problem (I had a elocity which was capacitive non backlight). But after using the tablet in the dark for 30 - 40 mins I found the missing backlight wasn't a killer as I could operate the buttons fine by feel.
Capacitive touch screen
Nice and responsive which I liked and unlike some of the other sub $300 capacitive tablets where the screen quickly flashes a highlights/select right before you scroll, the enspert does not do that. It scrolls up and down fine and only when you want to select something will it select it. Pinch to zoom works but nowwhere as smooth as apple's implementation (i haven't tried web surfing yet)
System
you can not rotated the main launcher. it's stuck in portrait mode. The screen will rotate within applications. I have to see if the auto rotate or even rotate works using launcher pro. The system feels pretty fast as of right now but I don't have much running on the system.
Screen
I think of all things this may be the most disappointing thing for me. The system does look pretty good but when you start loading up your own pics and videos you'll see that the color quality is not entirely there. Colors tend to be a bit washed out (faded appearance) I have brightness on 45 percent and black looks like very dark grey. That vivid green you get at the movies for the "previews" look faded. Fantastic 4 rise of the silver surfer, a pretty colorful and somewhat saturated movie looks nuetral on the enspert. If you have a picture with gradients you'll see some lines of banding depending on the gradients go. The enspert could have been smaller if the edge to screen was narrower but right now it's half an inch on all sides so you have a lot of wasted space. The narrowest edge to screen I've seen is on the Viewsonic Viewpad 7
Viewing angles are slightly above average from the left/right & top down. Bottom up is not that good. I'd say viewing angles are in line with the $299 price tag.
Movie playback
I tried playing some h264 mp4 files and not all of them played well. As far as I can tell any h264 files that are encoded using Main profile and below plays fine but if you use High profile then things start to fall apart. You get stuttering and choppiness in the video as well as some audio synch problems. I don't know if the problem is levels within the high profile or just in general with high profile (I'll have to test that out) I haven't try using the output but what's interesting is that they have an option for 1080p but the video playback only goes up to 720p (based on user manual).
Speakers, the speakers are okay, they won't win any loudness contests. If you plan on watching a movie with a few people you'll probably want to invest in a pair of portable speakers
Personally for me, if they had used a better qaulity screen or at least a screen comparable to the Archos 70 the enspert would have been awesome.

do you like the 10" screen or wish it was smaller

Still looking at the tablets. Part of me wants the biggest screen possible for browsing. But the flip side is the bigger the tablet, the less likely I will be to take it outside the house. How portable is your table and do you wish it was bigger, smaller or is the size just right?
Personally I think 10 inches is just right, I have played with the 7 inch tablets, I think the screen is to small. Anything bigger then 10 wouldn't be portable enough in my opinion, could get bulky too. Maybe if it was 12 and still the same thickness and weight, which will be possible later down the road of course.
For me 10 inches is right in that goldilocks zone. Video looks great at 10, Netflix is awesome.
i had a 7 in Sammy tab and I thought it was the perfect size for holding. The xoom is a little harder to hold in one hand. I guess it all depends on what you prefer to be doing on your device. If your into books and on the go internet emails I'd use 7 inch more. The 10 inch is perfect for movies and spreadsheets documents and big games and such.
i used to think 10" was too big, but then I got a case that didnt suck. My view on 7" is that I may as well just use my phone, which has a 4" and some change screen.
Ditto with the idea of 7 inch tablets for the ebook readers. Personally the 10.1 inch screens are perfect for me. I mean yes, the Xoom is a little heavier than the other Honeycomb tablets, but that's because it was the first of it's kind, but it works for me. I have used a 7 inch tablet before and it was not right for me. 10.1 inch screen sizes are perfect: not too large, but not too small, just right.
The future should bring a tablet with adjustable screen sizes. Lol! That way you wouldn't have to choose one or the other.

Well, I think the Xoom is a bit thicker and heavier (only a bit) because it has more ports and better hardware (cameras, true gps) than some of the others, not so much because it was the first (read older). I have a 7" tegra two tablet and it's really cute, but the Xoom is the one I use, not just daily but constantly.

That's very true indeed. The Xoom is an all out beast no doubt. That's why the newer build of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is thinner and lighter, because they stripped it of more powerful hardware such as the camera for example. The Xoom has a 5MP rear facing camera, meanwhile the Galaxy Tab 10.1 only has a 3MP rear facing camera. And other hardware related things as you mentioned. You are totally correct.
Down the road they will be able to pack all the power and features into a thin light weight device. I'd say with the quad core, 3D, ICS, and high resolution Android tablets and phones on their way... we are closing in on that gap of thin, light weight, extremely powerful devices.

When they come out, I hope I can afford one of them...:^)
I loved my old 7" for gaming, reading, etc. But it was failing for me on work related items. the 10" lets me read PDF's, type a little easier (still using swype), watch NetFlix in between appointments, etc.
With regards to portability my 7" went into my cargo pocket on my shorts. The Xoom I carry around in a stand/case that looks like a normal paper portfolio which works well and I haven't forgotten it anywhere. I honestly leave the laptop at home with TeamViewer setup and remote in if I need more than the tablet can do.
I wouldnt mind a play with a Flyer or similar just to see how much difference there is between the two..
10 inch is perfect for me, the 7s just feel like a really big phone to me.

Current Xoom size is in the Goldilocks zone for me...I like the form factor, too.
Dont get me wrong, I really like my Xoom, but I also have a DHD so my question would be get a smaller phone and get a smaller tablet so the whole lot is more portable or just stick with the sizes I have..
For a while the size of the Xoom was an issue for me. It simply wasn't "transportable" enough.
I even got one of those cheapo "ePad" 7-inch tablets from Hong Kong just so I could have the tablet experience in a pocketable form factor.
Anyway, the smaller tablet gave up the ghost, and I again began using my Xoom everyday.
The changing seasons has been a BIG help for me. Why? Jackets! I have an off-the-rack coat/jacket and two Scottevest items all with interior pockets big enough to hold my Xoom in the Motorola standard or AYL leather case without issues (and without it looking like I have a tablet in my pocket). Therefore, I can literally carry my Xoom everywhere without a man-bag!

I can't really advise about the phone because my phone is never special to me--just a phone--but the Xoom is really a perfect size. Small enough to carry everywhere and large enough to be really functional.
10" is just right. now, if there's a clam type tablet just like Sony's, then perhaps up to 12"
any more and it would have a very cumbersome surface area once opened.
the weight though cannot exceed the current weight of the xoom. as the xoom is already on the heavy side as it is now.

I have both a 7" tab and the 10" Xoom, and there is not even a comparison! I find myself not even using the 7" tab anymore (and they have all the same apps on)! If you go with the 7" I think you will find yourself wishing you had a 10". (lol)
I like the 10" for gaming because you can see whats under your thumbs while playing but then sometimes games or apps ask you to swipe in the middle or press a button and you have to change your position just for that command ( thats dev problem maybe they think you´re on a 7" screen and can do that swipe without changing your grip).
As a reader the 10" its really great you dont have to zoom the xoom (lol) to see well. i have a 7" huawei and i always have to zoom to read a pdf or a book. But then some readers dont have the change of page via tap and ask you to swipe from one side to another and thats a problem.
Also i find it really hard to type if it isnt in my lap. i got the thumb keyboard app but sometimes i wish there where no buttons in the middle because they are unreacheable (is there an app for something like the courier keyboard prototype from microsoft?) Anyway if you rotate the screen to write like in your phone then prepare to have thumb abs because its heavy in any tablet even the ipad.

[Q] Screen Hurting Eyes

Hi, i just bought the Galaxy note 10.1 a few days ago, and when i first started using it, my eyes were hurting and it got to the point when they were throbbing. my question is, has anyone else had this problem? i have a feeling this is because the resolution is not very good on the Note 10.1.
On another note, i decided to go with this over the Transformer Infinity because i read it had problems freezing up, is this true also? what have your experiences been with the Transformer Infinity? have you had any of these problems before?
Thanks,
Ryan
Sounds like you need to see an eye doctor...

Mine hurt if I have the brightness up. Since I've started setting the brightness at about 25%, it's been fine. It took very little time to get used to that and, except in very bright conditions, I find it's plenty.
Screen Hurting Eyes
You probably have bifocal vision . I have bifocal vison and can't use High-def screen . I bought and returned xperia z just for that , but this 1280 x 800 works great for me . Another thing you have to keep in mind is that You have to try and adjust screen brightness to be the same as your surroundings , because when you keep looking at screen and up and away from screen your eyes have to adjust to difference . The less difference the less work for the eyes and less strain at them . That's why the pirates have eyepatch . When they go from bright sun on upper deck down below deck they just switch eyepatch to another eye and they see perfect below in the dark . ( Maybe You should try that lol )

im 21 i dont have bifocal vision, the screen resolution is crap on it, although im uses to using HD Screens.
and i own a macbook pro that i use daily, so that might be the reason why i think the resolution is to low
I too had tired eyes after using any lcd device for a long time.
Some thoughts from me
- reduce brightness of the screen to bare minimum
- install anti glare screen protector. It reduces the reflections from the glass and allows you to reduce brightness further.
- install screen filter... it allows u to reduce brightness below system minimum. Good for night viewing.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
- take a break every 10 mins when using the tablet. Always use tv for watching movies... i have allshare cast dongle that i use for this purpose for videos i play from my tablet.
- if u read a lot of books/articles, invest in paperink readers. Very cheap these days.
- one big issue with tablets is that focal length that your eyes focus on, is almost constant. Not good. Try and follow wall ceiling lines every 20mins of tablet usage... it helps eye muscles focus on different focal lenghts and reduces fatigue.
- reduce time on tablet unless it's a job function for you.
- galaxy s3 has super amoled screens which are much easier on eyes.
- last and most imp one. Get you eyes checked.

That`s a real funny one....come on it`s still HD 720P
So growing up u didn`t watch a lot of TV......768x576
I had the same issue. I made a couple adjustments and it became much better.
First change the screen color from dynamic/standard to movie. Might take a little while to get used too. Then change the font on your device to something you feel comfortable reading.
http:// http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958316
Lastly I use an app called lux to adjust the brightness as well as change the warmth of the screen during the night. Helps a lot.
The screen fonts are only hard to read if they are too small. Just increase them to an appropriate size and they are fine.
Regarding the screen resolution. Have you noticed that only the Surface Pro ($1000) offers a digitizer pen with a fullHD screen? There is a reason for that. Those offer full i-series CPU's, not a tablet CPU as you have in your Note 10.1. To run a digitizer pen lagfree on a fullHD screen you need a better CPU and be prepared too PAY for it.
When you bought the Note 10.1 you made a choice - pen functionality vs fullHD. At $500 you can't have both.
I have problems with my eyes since i started using the note 10 plus 5G
I'm a note series user ,i was searching if anyone complained of that
I tried to stop the 5 g but still the same
I went to check my eyes and nothing wrong .
Ill try to go back to my previous note
Wrong forum for your model .

Good bye my Galaxy S4 - Mini review

Don't misunderstand. I like this phone very very much.
I have Note 2, and except the pen and battery, S4 is way better. However, these are too important for me to change to S4. Besides, I bought the S4 with 30% sale off, so I can have some profit from selling it. After using the phone for a week, here is my mini-review
Feel: A little bit angular, but still much better than S3 and Note 2. Feel quite gorgeous. However the side is a little bit iPhone-alike.
Screen:
- Brightness: Oh well, the maximum manual brightness is not as bright as my Note 2 (A Brighter Note app activated), but outdoor visibility is way better. Under sun light with auto brightness, white is much whiter (brighter), black under s much less blueish - mean darker. I can feel a little better in reflective level. I think most reviewers forget to turn automatic brightness on.
- Color: colors with Standard mode or Professional mode (AdobeRGB mode) are great, sometimes I prefer the formal, sometimes I prefer the latter (actually it's still a little bit over saturated compared to Note 2 - master sequence Perseus kernel, but I feel more pleasant with it. Black is, true black. Every AMOLED screen I had before is still bright in dark room, but not S4. Don't worry about ink spots or black spots, even there are some you cannot recognize, believe me,
- Viewing angle: better than Note 2, truely
Best screen I have ever had so far.
Heat and Battery: Oh well. It's quite hot with 3G browsing or benchmarking, but still bearable. Battery is quite good, at the middle between S3 and Note 2 (both with mature kernels, so battery of S4 will be greater later)
Camera Compared to Note 2: better white balance (a bit), similar color reproduction and saturation, much sharper (I like zooming and cropping, but for most it's not very easy to recognize), better in shooting moving objects (not as good as One). Night photos is much similar to Note 2 (brightness, color) but much less noise.
But I could not find outdoor visibility mode like Note 2, a minus point.
User experience: benchmark king in almost any area: 630 ms in Sunspider, 13k Quadrant, 28k Antutu, 40fps GLBenchmark, 2600 Browsermark, 3630 Geekbench 2,... (I recorded the best scores). It's quick like Usain Bolt, shooting a low-light photo 2-3 times faster than Note 2.
However, there are still a few strange hipcups in browsing (when zooming maximum and then scrolling) but I'm sure that it's software problem. But the browser is bad, really bad. No quick control and flash support (or I didn't find out how), tab-switching is a pain in the ass. No direct bookmark syncing from desktop chrome. I used Ocean Browser, much much much better (I recommend everyone uses this app)
Sound: The same speaker as Note 2, but better with amplifier.
I don't want to spend a lot for phones, so I decided to wait for Note 3, which is surely better than S4 in important areas (screen, camera, speed) or at least on par.

Yeah, I think if you're a Note user who enjoys the S Pen features and huge display as well as the incredible batt life then the GS4 isn't for you.

Quick question but now that there's Air View does the S-Pen still have any advantages over just using your fingers? Besides some people finding it easier to draw with the pen then by hand.

Glad to hear about this directly from users :victory:
The poor outdoor visibility and ultra-slow charging were the main problems that Samsung needed to fix before I switched from my iPhone.

Is that the screen on time or the general use time?

probably general use time. I think that 5 and half hours of screen on time would be more than a dream for a smartphone.

Confusion about display quality

Hello, I keep hearing people saying that the screen of the Note PRO 12.2 is very nice. Is it only for viewing photos and watching movie? I tried a Note PRO 12.2 in another store. Again, they did not allow me to connect it to the internet. From Magazine MX, regardless of font size, I can see letters and numbers made of large pixels and the edges are not smooth. Is this a rendering problem or the dpi problem? Can this be fixed without rooting? Does this issue show up when I view pdf documents? As they did not allow people to connect to the internet, I could not test. Thanks.

At what is considered a normal viewing distance no pixels should be visible. The screen displays at a true 2560x1600 resolution. If you were seeing jagged "large" pixels you are probably too close to the device. There are only one real occasion you should see pixels (possibly). This is when either viewing colored say blue text against a fully saturated solid colored background (HIGHLY UNCOMMON). Black and white text will render 100% perfectly and any full color images will also render perfectly. Understand the reccomended viewing distance for a screen this size is close to 18-24 inches

Thanks. I saw the large pixels under magazine MX. I could not test other applications. On both devices (from different stores), as soon as Handcom Office was launched, the app got terminated automatically. Couldn't test browser nor pdf as the stores did not allow wifi connections. The most obvious are the large numbers that made up the clock (white numbers with blue background). I could see the large pixels even at an arm's distance. I don't remember exactly but I think I also saw large pixels on letters that made up the calendar under Magazine MX (white numbers in green background). As I flipped to other pages, I also saw large pixels.
It's definately not that bad. If you look for it you can see pentile artifacts but text is plenty sharp and I'd much rather have this display than my wife's iPad 2 for example. Sure a retina display on an iPad 3/Air is great too but this Note Pro screen is plenty good enough for me.
I give you credit for your fortitude man, in the few months you've been trying to decide I've purchased one, lost it in an act of utter stupidity and then purchased another LOL.
I still cannot buy the LTE version in my city. I will travel at the end of next week. I am going to make the purchase. I have to choose between the LTE version of NOTE PRO 12.2 and the LTE version of 10.1 2014.

If its about black and white text it should be amazing. Pentile only requires 2 subpixels to make a black line. Rgb takes 3. So the pentile actually will produce more lines at the same resolution. And for black and white text reproduction is 100% flawless. Text should be much better on the note is what im sayin. Well nearly identical considering lower dpi.

No complaints on the screen here, I also have the Note 10.1 2014.
The screen is great at normal using distance. People who hold the screen to their nose complain. It's got a lot more pixels than my 27" desktop monitors that's for sure.
