Kenneth Hong, global director of corporate communications for LG, talked about O3D and 3D phones on The Guardian (link to interview)
He says that O3D sold a million phones and he's quite content with that. LG wants to keep focussing on 3D and 3D phones are a part of that. They believe glasses less 3D TV is the future and want to enlarge their knowledge on that technique by being the frontrunner in the 3D phone market. (apparently big sales isn't their reason, at least for now)
Complete text on what he said about 3D phones and O3D (Max):
What happened with the Optimus 3D phone?
KH: Still going. We actually introduced a part two this year [Optimus 3D Max]. Usually when you develop a sequel that means you're happy with the first one. But you see a need to keep developing it. That's similar to what I just said. 3D may not be our bread and butter, in phones, but it's a huge innovation driver. Go back to Apple, the Newton. They were the first company to have the tablet. And now who's the leader in tablets?
So it doesn't matter if nobody buys it right now because it's a driver for innovation down the road?
KH: There are people who are going to have this advantage just having been in this field for the future. That's kind of how we see 3D. It may not be mainstream today, but it will be. We're betting the entire TV division on it.
But part of that, we're carrying over and trying to leverage that knowledge over on the phones. And right now, as far as I know, we're the only company in the world that has two 3D phones on the market. One of our competitors tried it [HTC with the Evo 3D, which went on sale in June 2011], but I guess they didn't like the outcome, because they haven't said anything else about it this year. [The Evo 3D was discontinued in April 2012.]
We want to keep pushing. We sold a million 3D version ones. To us that's good enough. There's a million people who were interested; we're going to keep building on that number. People think it didn't sell very well – it was never meant to. It was a flagship in glasses-free 3D. It's an innovation driver for the future of 3D, which we already have assumed will not require glasses. How do you develop that no-glasses technology unless you're playing around with it at a smaller size?

Pretty cool to hear because I love the 3D personally, I just wish they offered better support

Good News alright. O3D was a flagship, followed by a sequel 3DMAX. LG wants it continued. All fine, but where is ICS? where is the ICS? Jelly Beans is already out, so ICS is passe? Or do we get the Jelly Bean directly?
Do we get anything at all? no comments?

Dude, we already have a thread for ICS and Jellybean. - [ALL ICS / JELLYBEAN] Related Topics / Requests / Questions
This topic isn't about either one of them. It's about Pushing 3D Phones and Innovation.
Don't post about ICS or Jellybean in here.
I was also very happy to read it!
There are problems with the O3D, but the 3D isn't one of these problems! It's as a matter of fact a great feature. Most of all the camera!
Shooting private 3D stuff really adds a lot to vacation pictures/movies, etc.!
I truly hope that LG will continue to innovate and bring out a good Full HD 3D phone out next time with enough RAM and CPU to pull of the job.
Too bad that for some reasons the 3D haters seem to win the internet debate. Not b/c of knowledge but just b/c the masses are conservatives.

The bolded question should be sufficient.
Please tell me, where in this sentence does it talk about innovation or pushing 3D phones?
If it isn't in the interview, please don't insert it in the topic at hand.
Jeeez..... talk about getting you knickers in a twist. Looks like EVERYBODY is a moderator in this thread!
It would be some progress
...if the prices would go low. Then it would be a hit. Hardware is good - not great, but good, considerind that for the same hardware specs, no 3D, cost around the same price or at least 75% on other brands.
Is the price of 3D option that is killing the product and the fact that people are not so confident in a brand that is more for innovation (cause no one can't deny the "first time" products that LG is producing) than for making profit, therefor famous brands - and I quote here Apple and Samsung.
For me those two brands can stay where they are now. I love my eLGy as I would love any other brand that gives me problems, headaches to deal with. Life's Good when you're challenged.
PS: in same place, same spot a friend's iPhone can't hook up the WiFi network. My eLGy does it simple.

Even if The dark Lestat isn't tagged with "moderator" that doesn't mean that he can't moderate a discussion that certainly is going off topic or is just adding useless information. Ok?

Shut Up - I don't use any ROMS other than the official stock ones, thank you. Maybe the respect should be given to the moderators and admin, to leave them to do their jobs.

Yes but this phone was just a gateway to test the 3d waters they need a device with better hardware to build on and 3d Max isn't really it. They need to compete with Samsung in terms of hardware. The o3d has good hardware but could be better to keep up.

Because LG is taking one step at a time. And Samsung is carrying a battle against iFone so not interested in 3D. And maybe is better this way. LG, from "who's LG?" in TV sets became the first one to have certified 2D and 3D THX TV set (and I mean the PX950 series - I own the 55PX950N TV set - gorgeous). So the 3D thing is really important to LG. I bet my pants on that the first full colored, HiDef holographic device will be eLGy.

Hey, Evo4Eva might not have the most polite way of expressing his opinion, but he does have a point!
I don't know how webOS is on a phone, but on a tablet it really is awful. It's immature, unpolished and clearly unfinished. It's actually so bad, that it made a tablet with excellent hardware, like the Touchpad, god awfully slow.
You can browse faster on an old HTC Desire than on a Touchpad. And that really says something, considering the fast dualcore Snapdragon CPU that thing has.
(Besides, webOS is the Flying Dutchman of Operating Systems. It's cursed and destroys any company or hardware it gets close to!)

You can't have ice cream until you're done eating yogurt. When you're full, you can have gingerbread. After gingerbread, you can trade it in for a Captivate and put ice cream on it.
Or just buy a phone that is actually supported by samy... Us Infusers are just going to be perpetually left out of the freezer... No sammiches for us
problem around here is the developers never wanted to work with what we have. froyo alone has a ton of potential left in it but with Sammy dangling gb in our faces the devs that made the infuse what it is just got to a point that it was a waiting game and they got tired of waiting. I think the best plan is to work with what we have and make the most out of it. stop jerking around wanting what's not there and just make the most of what is there. froyo on the galaxy s was miles beyond the infuse to the point I was uneasy about upgrading to gb on my cappy.
infuse owners have to realize the infuse has an expiration date. next time get an international flasgship or something closely related to it, that or a nexus where you will have updates for several years coming.

Hey, everyone, I just thought I'd help translate some jargon for the n00bz ... It'd look amateur without it, like a map without a color key, you know?
around here: xda-developers.com, one website and, really, only a little section of it.
froyo: three versions ago in the operating system of topic
jerking around wanting what's not there: asking for current software (...the nerve!!)
sammy: Samsung Electronics Co., or its $220bn parent company Samsung Group (total 2010 revenue)
dangling gb: Samsung's apparent plans to produce, release, and support Android v.2.3, Gingerbread ("gb")
cappy: Samsung Captivate, released July 2010 in U.S.
"froyo ... miles beyond the infuse" : Unintelligible
Okay, I hope I did a good job. Now, if the n00bz keep asking questions, we can do them the service of making our language transparent! Why they won't just get it is astounding... I mean, who would ask questions about new software, anyway?? Just blows my mind... and who could make the mistake of thinking there might be a straight answer about something promising, that is, the new practical features of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android v.4) on a forum dweller's tongue is just plain offensive! Enduring such ignorance is hard, but I suppose it's a must. Live & let live... keep up the tolerance, fellow Infusers.
point taken I guess. what is annoying is the xda moderators have 2 search engines. on is xda wide Google assisted and the other is forum/thread based, not only that but when you create a new thread it suggests threads on similar topics you should read before posting the thread right in your face. yet this will not be the last ics request or "is it available" thread... but I wasn't gonna go there.
as far as ics. it needs a really talented dev to find ways to interface the proprietary stuff from gb to ics. even if we got a bootable version it would possibly be months before it was usable as more than a music player. the galaxy s is very lucky to have a number of talented devs and a closer relationship to the nexus s. even though the rom end could be taken from the galaxy s the kernel would be a big undertaking due to different GPS, Bluetooth, radio, screen, and other componants.
Hm .. lots to think about, there .
Holding these abandoned devices in your hand makes you pine daily for updates on developers' progress toward what would appear to be inevitable. If it isn't, it is a commercial atrocity
By "interface," there, do you mean device emulation or rewritten device drivers? i'm attempting to assess the nature of the challenge, less so its magnitude. i do appreciate both this and the frustration with lazy users.

it could be emulation or I guess some kind of wrapper. like how Linux can use windows wifi drivers on a PC. driver rewrites need source code and/or documentation I would think.
I don't know the technical details but I know entropy has brought up things that have changed that may be hard to port. maybe if the cm9 team actually had an infuse. they have some real talent but the problem is getting it in the hands of an interested member of the team.
we lucked out with Linux bozo but I don't think its typical for a device to get a cm port without the cm team having involvement if the kernel is unique. on many older HTC phones kernels are somewhat cross compatible so those phones are a little more able to share development.
who releases kernels

I agree. I mean realistically I'm sure the devs will be the first to know when source or drivers get released, but but don't squash a guy for being enthusiastic and trying to be helpful.
First, I would like to apologize for lowering to a level I have tried to remove from these forums. I have been in this game quite awhile and I've learned one thing for sure, being polite and helpful get the best results. I come originally from the lowly Huawei ascend and I'll tell you, that phone has a great community and still sees support and it hit eol more than 6 months ago. We as a group decided our own fate when WE pushed our devs to lock our ICS thread. This is our device and our forums and we are responsible for building a sense of community. As it is now, I cringe to check my own threads because I know they will be bloodgened with haters and "you're wrong, I'm right ". We should all try to encourage one another and promote how awesome our device is, which brings me to this... Why use these forums to bash the g2x? All the complaining and whining is why t-Mobile bailed out. I am a collision tech for highline vehicles, do you have any idea how much service a Ferrari requires to keep it running? I seriously doubt Enzo Ferrari endured customers calling to tell him what a pos his cars are(I know he's dead) Lastly, I happen to be a successful writer for another website, I happen to be a weath of knowledge with a lot of connections. I have been been working my butt off to help a certain group of devs get a certain app working on our device, all I'll say is those of us that are flashing addicts will appreciate this app. I get things done through kindness and support. I would love to see that sense of community here, lets face it, we ALL use these forums. Thank you so much all devs that have stuck it out with us, our device would be worthless without you, sincerely, artifintel.

Why use these forums to bash the g2x? qft. The saddest part is that some people will never learn.
BTW: Good luck
Thanks! I'm scheduled to do an article on the app, hopefully they will have it working soon.

Very well said. Although I don't think the "you're wrong I'm right" has a lot to do with the problem. I think the problem goes a little deeper then that.
I feel the problem lies more upon the greed of many users who for some reason think devs/themers owe them something. Developers and themers do this because we like to in our own freetime. We like seeing the page views, downloads, thanks, and constructive criticism that push us to go a step further.
I will give an example of how many of us that make releases look at things. And use my personal releases as reference.
My precision theme for all devices I own and some I don't own has about 6k downloads. Precision for cm7 has about 900. Icecreamcomb has a little over 3k. Weapon new clip has about 400. And a few thousand for all my wallpapers, boot animations, and other images I have created. So apparently a lot of people use my work which is what I hope for upon releasing, seeing as I want people to enjoy it as much as I do.
Look at my thanks meter. I have 210 thanks. So that tells me that out of the 10k+ people using my work only 210 (2%?) where grateful enough to take the liberty to click a button and show appreciation for my hours and hours of hard work. But hey that's fine at least some people do appreciate it and many more use it.
However there are always those that do nothing but troll and complain that drives everyone away. It is sad when it gets to the point that people stop developing for a device because of users. I find it quite astounding the nerve of some people.

Korean LG says ICS is in testing phase, that's awesome news for us!
Nice, thanks for posting
Finally (maybe) no more limping ICS builds here.
Ya, let's hope one of the devs are still around when it's released =P
This sounds too good to be true... Especially because I can't read Korean...
LG is having a laugh at their customers' expense. I've never seen a company SO inept at just giving a fscking "YES" or "NO" answer about a product.
Oh please oh please don't lie to us or we will just continue to beg you more!! write letters, social media, and petition. I meed a break from all this buddy

I posted this in another thread but our good friend Paul O'Brien's sources say it's "imminent" for the 2X
The will-it-wont-it saga over the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for LG devices has been rolling on for months, but now, thankfully, we've had word from our LG insider on what's REALLY happening!
The news is good. Ice Cream Sandwich updates are nearing completion and will be released imminently for the Optimus 2X, Optimus 3D and Optimus Black! Exact dates are still not forthcoming, but we'll keep you posted with more news as we get it.
I'm really happy for LG users that this is going to happen, the support so far has been pretty shocking and LG really could do with turning it around.

Well here's hoping the LG Insider is right. If he is that means fully supported ICS for the T-Mo G2X once the devs get their hands on it. Not that I am complaining at all about HFP but it would be nice to run a fully supported ICS on the G2X.
Seems I heard this a few times before. I'll believe it when I see... Wait. I got rid of my G2x.
But just for arguments sake that this is true. They are in a testing phase. Which means the earliest this would be release to T-Mobile is what, Jan-Feb. and then they have to test it. So what, the 2 year anniversary of the device? I got my G2x on pre-order. It's been dead. Sorry, but I can't see this being offered as an official update.
No place in the article does it mention an "official update" coming. Seems the articles writer is jumping the gun in this one.
It won't ever be official for TMobile..suppose to be just for Korean o2x correct? But that's when devs can try and port it for those of us remaining hopeless souls
Another article I have found on this: http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/14/lg-confirms-optimus-2x-ics-korea/

Just trying to be helpful If we can find a Korean O2x user...
We've got smart devs around here, it'll be done for sure. The code isn't going to be in Korean. The only issue is it'll be for the P990 variant...
They have had a working build with their own 3xxx kernel for months. Let us say i have a REALLY good source.

Hey everyone,
Tonight I used my phone upgrade and upgraded to the Atrix HD. It's been nice knowing all of you guys here in the forums, and I'm certainly going to miss you. (the ones I like anyway.... )
Big thanks to the developers in this community for putting in so much hard work for this phone. You have been wonderful to all of us. :good:
Cheers mate, best of luck to you!

Gutsy is how I roll. Plus the Atrix HD really competes with the high end devices since it has the same Snapdragon S4 as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X. Ran a Quadrant benchmark test and pulled a 4,750 without any real customizations yet. Also, this display...truly gorgeous, one to behold!

Really? Was that needed?
I'ts a classic "pun". I don't think it needs to be taken out of context.
So let's not start something, that isn't there to begin with

While you're still in return time look at the Sony Xperia Ion. Screen and camera makes Note, OneX etc look like a joke!

In all seriousness though, I have nothing against anyone and am more than happy to still help you guys out here with any questions/problems you might have. Feel free to shoot me a PM whenever.
You're leaving us just as I have updated the OP of my guide thread for n00bs! I was going to include you in the directory of Senior Members for the A2 forums, but now you're boating on us...
Anyhow, good luck with the new phone, I hope everything works out for you, and that you really enjoy it!

Apex,
You're more than welcome to add my name to the list anyway in case anyone has questions/problems. I may not have the phone anymore, but I would still be more than happy to help out in any way that I can.

Okay, I'll put you on the directory. I may have to "tiny url" up some links, as I'm pushing the 30,000 character limit on this one!
Torn between hijacking a thread and cluttering up the main page with a new one - chose the hijack. I'm so sorry, MagicXB!
I also am leaving, after such a short time here! Speaking of the Xperia ion, that's the one I am going with. AT&T finally got tired of throwing A2's my way to fix my reception problems and gave me a free warranty upgrade. I chose the ion for a lot of reasons, and I think I'll be happy with it.
I got really into following the community here and have been excited to follow the projects that are ongoing. The dev community here is excellent, and I'm convinced good things will be around for this phone for awhile. Unfortunately, with AT&T getting rid of support for this phone, I feel like you'll see people like me dropping off - they won't have any more A2's to give out!
Thank you all for your help and time.

Going with the Xperia Ion seems to be quite risky to me. The hardware itself looks quite beautiful but it launched with Gingerbread onboard, and in this day and age of countless phones coming out I would be worried about it even seeing ICS (much less anything after that).
To be honest, I obsessed over this decision for awhile. The One X was my main competitor, but I don't like not having expandable storage, and I've had really bad experiences with HTC phones before. The Atrix HD is pretty, but it just didn't feel right to me. And the Galaxy S3 looks like a cheap piece of plastic from my childhood and I hate the Samsung UI (not to mention the off chance that Apple manages to run Samsung into the ground).
ICS is great, but it's not everything. Sony has been really good about updating older phones to ICS and I have no doubt this one will get it soon enough. And if it doesn't, the Sony UI incorporates some of the more important elements of ICS already. I think it's a really nice phone, well made and I'm hoping I'll enjoy it. That said, I'm sure there are more than enough people here who think I'm insane, lol .
