Help! Need to Root NS4g w/o computer! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not new to android whatsoever.. I've just returned from an Iphone 4s cause i was missing the openess of android. Now.. i've pulled out my old Nexus S 4g, Updated it to 4.0.4 and i cant get it to connect to my computer for the life of me! tried 4 different cables, 5 different computers, every driver i could find and nothing. I've come to believe this is a software failure... All i need is root and i will be able to sleep at night. Could someone package up .zip to give root and twrp recovery that i could flash through stock recovery? I dont know else i could do to get root... but this problem is becoming quite annoying.

Perhaps your usb port on your Nexus S is broke? Does it charge?

Try and I guess the term would be wiggle the micro USB cord and see if the computer makes the sound it makes when a device is plugged in.
My old phone was dropped by my brother. Would charge fine but wouldn't be seen by the computer without fiddling with port.
Sounds unlikely this is your case though. Since you said it worked prior to a update.

[Q] wont regester to usb.

i just got this and was trying to root it. but when i plug it into the pot {or any port for that matter} i just charges. nothing more. ive installed the drivers, turned on usb debuging, and tried to use mass storage. nothing. please help i really want to root this
well first welcome to the G2x forums. you have alot of reading to do.
make sure you read EVERYTHING before you start ANYTHING. sometimes a few passes over a post really helps.
you say your trying to get root, well there is a guide in the general section stickied up top to show you just how to do this. i linked to it Here for you.
Im not sure if you've owned and Rooted other android devices, but the G2X is a little different than most. just read that ENTIRE post start to finish and then follow all of the steps. if all you want is to be rooted on the stock rom, then you can stop at step 3. otherwise follow all the way through.
have fun and hope it works for ya.
NA. I got the rooting down. But my laptop wont even pick up that I've hooked up my g2x. It just charges.

what are you trying to do?
are you trying to use NVFlash?
are you trying to connect via USB to transfer files?
or are you trying to get root via the computer?
if your just trying to transfer files via USB, what ROM are you currently using?
im rooting its. but it will only charge when hooked up to my lap top. ive used other cords, laptops, installed the drivera. just wont regester

I don't know of any computer applications that gain root for us, so unless you can link to the guide you are using, i can't help

I'm not using a guide. I'm just plugging my g2x into my laptop so I can start rooting but all it does is charge. No USB message on the phone or computer. I just want to know how to male it connect

1) you cant root like that, so stop trying.
2) if you are trying to get root, just follow the link i posted above and you will have it in no time
3) if you properly installed the drivers for USB Mass-Storage, it should show up on your computer just like any other USB Drive, try These (i searched Google and picked the first thing) and see if it works.
4) if you are trying to use ADB or another debugging tool, make sure USB-Debugging is checked in your settings.
5)if none of this works, its a hardware issue with either your computer or your phone.
im trying to help, but every time i ask you a question, you seem to ignore it and just re-state your first post. you said you have rooting down, but you obviously dont, you are trying to get root, but it seems as if you wont even read my entire posts.
so this is most likely the last post im going to make in this thread, hope it works out for you.
Just to say, I'm assuming he is aware just plugging the phone into the computer won't root it. It sounds to me like he was saying, he was planning on rooting the phone so he did the steps to get it connected to the computer but it is just charging and not showing up anywhere so he is unable to proceed to the actual rooting steps.
If you're on Windows 7 maybe try XP my phone had issues connecting to Windows 7 even though I see many people that have done it perfectly fine. I had to get the screen replaced when I dropped my phone and since then it hasn't been registering to my computer only charging so as Klathmon already suggested in my similar thread about this, the USB port on the phone itself is damaged so Wednesday I'm getting a replacement -_- good luck with your issue.

Could it possibly be your micro USB cable? I know some of them only support charging and not data transfer. Maybe try another computer if it isn't the cable. Are you rooting it with SuperOneClick? just curious
I had two bad Galaxy Nexus' with a confirmed defective USB port. Bear in Mind with both phones I did not root them. The first one came rooted (Check out NewEggs reviews about this "The Box was Open" issue) and the second one did not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589628
So I returned it (the second one that exhibited this) for refund to NewEgg and ordered one directly from Google Play
On the GNex forums they kept telling me to check if Fast-Charge was enabled. I tried different cables, Different batteries, with or without SIM. Enabling/Disabling fast-charge, Switching between PTP and MTP, well over 100 different computers (I work in IT and have a literal TON (over two thousand pounds) of computers to work with) and USB cables. I personally came to the conclusion that the part of the port that transfers data to an external part is fried. It saddens me to say that your port may be fried on your G2x.
By the way, the G2x absolutely demolishes the GNex in respect to performance, but the GNex's stability makes me very very happy.
Fixed!
After months of searching the net for a solution, my issue was resolved by replacing the usb flex cable in the phone. I can't tell you how elated I was then I first hooked it up.

Looks like my Skyrocket doesn't like USB anymore

Well, I think my beloved Skyrocket is now pooched. It has been acting strange lately (won't turn off, and when I pull the battery and put it back in it just restarts). Now, most recently I am unable to sync it with my computer at all. I'm running stock 2.3.5 Rogers, got bored on the weekend and wanted to try CM9. But the computer won't do anything when its plugged in. The skyrocket will just charge.
I have tried 3 different PC's, my MacBook and 4 different Micro USB cables. All yielding the same results. What made me come to the final conclusion its definately my phone is because I tried a friend of mine Skyrocket and his works great.
Before I turn this thing into my kids bath time boat anchor, is it repairable or pretty much hopeless? If not, I'm getting a Note. Go big or go home, right?

already, already, already and not :/
with another PC if it is recognized but I have no access to another for now
Oddly enough I just acquired a Samsung Infuse 4G this morning, and I've gone through 4 USB cables (that work perfectly with a number of other devices, all tested one by one this morning just to prove it to myself), I've gone through dozens of USB ports across 4 computers (3 laptops and 1 desktop), and no matter what I try to do and how many times I install/uninstall/reinstall either Kies/Kies mini/the USB drivers all by themselves, I cannot get any response from Windows (or even Linux) with respect to this Infuse and I gotta say I'm a bit peeved about it (not at anyone here, or Samsung, but at the person that sold it to me - my fault there for not checking it out completely).
It'll charge fine off the microUSB port, it'll even recognize that it's been plugged into a computer and ask what mode would I like (Kies firmware upgrade, Media, USB storage) and regardless of what I do in any respect, still nothing. Windows never recognizes it at all - there's no error message about not being able to use a device, it just doesn't "see" it ever no matter what's attempted - the classic "ba-donk" sound when attaching a USB device is never heard from any computer I've plugged this phone into, nor detached it from.
What pisses me off the most is the device is at pure factory stock condition, running Froyo 2.2.1 and I can't get it to update over the air to Gingerbread 2.3.6 in any respect - it'll connect with the AT&T servers but then it says "Your device is up to date" which obviously is not correct.
So I'm stuck with a device that's not allowing me to get it off the most basic stock build - if I could just get it to Android 2.3.6 I'd be much happier with it but, I don't see it happening and I have no idea how to proceed.
Don't want to try and dump it off on someone else now even though that would be pretty easy to do off craigslist, probably get $125 for it in no time flat.
Any suggestions as to how I can make it somewhat useful past that dreaded Froyo 2.2.1 would be greatly appreciated.
It's pure stock, not rooted, but it is unlocked as it works with a T-Mobile SIM installed when I tried it. Guess there's just no potential way to force it to update to 2.3.6... dagnabbit.
EDIT:
And no, download mode, recovery, nothing works outside of the OS either, the phone goes into Download mode obviously without issues but attaching the USB cable does nothing, it's just not visible to the computer in any respect. Seems a bit odd but whatever, guess it's just dead for USB data transfer at this point.

Did you ever find a solution for rooting your Infuse? I'm having the EXACT same issues with mine and would love to root it and move on.
I had the issue had to take it out of debug mode to get it to recognize even then only heimdall would recognize it in download mode

Phone will not connect as USB

I'm currently on Beans 13 rom and noticed that I cannot connect my phone to my computer via usb, all it will do it charge, I will not get a notification to use usb mass storage or anything like that. I uninstalled the drivers, rebooted my computer and phone, installed the drivers again and still does not give me the usb notification.
I then remembered that I did a nandroid on Beans 12 so I loaded that up and tried connecting to my computer and had the same exact issue. I took my phone to my roommate's laptop who also has a verizon S3 and tried connecting to his laptop. Still just charges, no notification.
I connected his S3 using the same exact cord to my computer and my computer recognizes his phone (although he is 100% stock).
I decided to try and Odin back to 100% stock. I loaded up Odin on my computer (Win 7 Pro 64 bit) and rebooted my computer into the odin/download mode and my computer/odin didn't recognize my phone. At this point I am at a lost. I have a suspicion that maybe the usb port on my phone went bad but in order to replace it with Verizon, I need to odin back to stock. Any one have any ideas?
I apologize if this has been covered before, I used the search and didn't see anything relating this.

I'm having the exact same problem with my GS3. The problem started after I flashed Beans B13 as well. I directly downloaded MDOB (it's a stock rooted ROM) and flashed it, but I am still having the issue. I haven't been able to figure it out either. Hopefully someone on here can help us out!
Well I think I solved the problem - at least for me. I tried the USB cable from my Dad's Droid X. Plugged the phone into the computer and everything works. No errors and the drivers installed correctly. I tried the cable that came with my phone (the one I have always used and has worked up until now) and it doesn't work. I get the error with it, but as soon as I use the one from the DX again, it works! Not sure why that is but I would say give it a try for sure! Let me know if it works for you too!
By the way, I got the idea from this thread:

Take a look if trying the new cable doesn't work!

Thanks for replying back! I meant to add a post. I got my phone working again. My roommate and I took apart the tip of my usb cable (the one that came with the phone) and noticed the green wire was broken off, so we soldered it back on and my phone was able to connect to my computer finally. Although it wasn't a strong connection and kept disconnecting.
For now I'm using a different cable from my hp touchpad and it's working perfectly fine so everything is all good now

That's good to hear! I guess both of our cables just went bad from use or something. Wish I would have tried another cable sooner instead of spending 4 hours installing and uninstalling drivers and wiping and installing ROMs over and over trying to solve the issue! :silly: But good thing we both figured it out! :victory:
I'm having the same problem as well...have now tried 4 different cables, hard reset, and every USB port on my machine and my buddy's computer to no avail. I verified the cables were 'good' on my buddy's gf's gs3 and it worked fine...just wont see mine. Charges just fine just no go on getting any data pass through it seems???

[Q] Desire S, USB not working but charges? Pls help.

Hi
I recently bought a Desire S from a friend. I went about rooting it but when I plugged it into my PC it is not recognised at all, literally nothing pops up on the phone or the PC.
I've checked the settings in the phone and USB debugging is enabled and I always changed default connection type.
I have even booted into Hboot and plugged the USB in, but still nothing.
The phone charges perfectly fine and I've tried plenty of different cables. My other Android phone works perfectly when plugged it.
I'm starting to think its a hardware issue, anyone else heard of this? common problem? any fixes?
Thanks
Re install htc sync and drivers, then remove sync and try again

I have the same problem, sort of. When I plug mine in all is well at first, but give the phone one tiny nudge (or just wait a few minutes) and it goes back to charge-only mode. It's probably a slightly loose connection somewhere in the USB port on your phone.
To be sure, try if it works in Linux. The Linux USB stack sucks infinitely less than what Windows uses.
Thanks for the replies. I tried Ubuntu but exactly the same (it worked with my Nexus 4)
Thats a little annoying, thankfully charging still works, just unsure how long that will last for! plus I cant root it! but I dont exactly need it rooted but I tend to do it anyway.
I've sorted it now. It was a loose ribbon cable, plugged that back in after taking the phone apart and its working.
Bootloader unlocked and custom recovery flashed. Ready to rock.
