Issue with Hardware Button Lights - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Not sure if there is anything I can do for this. The lights for my three hardware buttons (back, home, and multi) do not work right. The back key works just fine, the other two light up sometimes and sometimes not. If I squeeze the phone sometimes they come back on. I am unlocked so my warranty is void. Anyone have any thoughts?

did you even read what he wrote? It seems like a hardware fault I would still try sending it in.

If you can't get them to fix it under warranty (doesn't hurt to try), I suggest just turning them off completely.

I think I am going to go into the store and give it a shot, see what they say. All they can do is say no. Thanks.

Button light problems.

Anyone have the same problem as me? Basically my capacitive button back lights tend to not always actually light up. They choose when they want to light up. I usually do a reboot and they go back to normal but an hour later they shut off and turn on whenever, rarely turn back on though.

They are turned off when the sensation is exposed to light and are on when there isnt that much light. For example, using the sensation in sunlight will keep it off while using the sensation in a dark room will leave it lit.

Yeah, I get what you mean, my G2 was like that as well.
Thing is that im in my room right now and its dark in here, besides my tv which isnt emitting much light and theyre off right now. Luckily i still know where the buttons are located and which one is which, but its annoying knowing theyre off when they should be on.

Sounds like its time to send in your phone for a replacement. I just tried on mine what you described, and my keys light up. I would get a warranty exchange

I have the exact same problem with my button back lights, and will probably have to send it back to HTC for a replacement.

Just put your finger over the light sensor. If the capacitive lights come on, they work.
If they don't come on, they don't work.

I just learned that if I put my finger over the sensor light, the button back lights turn on. That is great news, because I didn't want to send my phone back.

True, but they shouldn't function that way. It should be automatic. I'd send it in for repair.

They are 'automatic'. They come on when the phone is booted, and when the ambient light is low.
They don't STAY on when you can see them perfectly well without being lit. That would drain your battery life faster.
That's actually a good thing.
People shouldn't return a device because of a 'feature', IMHO.

Mine stay on constantly regardless of light. Not sending it for repair as it's likely software not a hardware problem.

I don't even realize if mines are on or off since I know where the buttons are, so I guess it doesn't bother me.

capacitive buttons

Hi. Are the buttons supposed to light up? Mine don't. Is this normal?
They light up on mine.
It does look like it is controlled by the light sensor.

More specifically only in certain light conditions. The buttons rely on the light sensor to tell them when to light up.

Any way of stopping them lighting at night? Reason I ask is I use Gentle Alarm and when 'Night Display' is enabled they will remain on even when in Night Display mode I press the power button off then on and they still come on? Not had the problem on other phones.

There should be an app in the market or online called led hack to disable them

Don't think it's on the market these days? I have found a copy but need to be rooted - but thanks for suggestion. I'll root at some point but my One S may need to be returned as currently in discussions with HTC over mobile network reception.

[Q] APN and Capacitive buttons questions

I just got my One X and everything seems fine so far, though I'll need to go to AT&T tomorrow to setup a new sim, because as far as I know, My old SIM won't work with the LTE right? I have the one from my old captivate that I cut into a micro sim for an iPhone 4 and I put that in the One X and the APN settings are wrong because they're the settings from the iPhone 4 I'm assuming. If anyone can help me out with the APN that would be great.
Another question I have is regarding the capacitive buttons. Do they only come on in the dark or all the time? I noticed that they weren't on but I turned off my lights and they came on.
Thanks in advance
My button lights are on all the time.

Mine seem to react automatically also. My home button also doesn't light up while the other two button do light up, so Ithink I have a faulty unit.

I would exchange it because of your home button issue. But nice to know that yours are light sensitive

If you put your finger over the light sensor (like a quater inch to the left of the AT&T logo) you can see that the capacitive buttons come on. Though I'm looking at mine right now and it seems like they don't go off automatically once I take my finger away.

Backlight buttons

Just curious if everyone else's buttons backlight all three are either lit up or not. On mine, the back and home are while the recent one is sometimes. My guess is that it's a defect. It's just weird that it'll light up with the others occasionally so I know the light works. I really hate to have to swap this thing out cause everything else works great.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda premium
I've been trying to figure this out, actually.
All three of mine are either on or off - but it seems like while the phone is plugged in (not being touched) with the screen on... the buttons are lit up all the time.
Only this morning they were off while the screen was on and the battery was charging. Very weird.
You know, I just noticed mine are off. Going to investigate.

Just realized they turn off when in a bright environment and turn back on when dark. I guess.I learned something today. lol

But it's all three correct? Not just the first two? My recent button hardly ever comes on..only occasionally.

Yeah, it's all 3. All 3 are either on or off. Yours is broken. I wouldn't really mind if all of mine just stayed off. lol

I could care less if they ever came on Hopefully an update will make it so we can turn them off/on or dim after a certain idle time.

It comes in handy at night. Other than that, they shouldn't come on. And damn, I didn't want to take mine back. I at least can get mine set back up pretty quickly.

New to the one s. Coming from the sensation. Like the title says are the buttons supposed to light up? Mine don't.

Mine doesn't stay on either. Actually... The only time mine is ever on is during boot and when doing a hard reset. It seems like they should be on anytime the screen is on, the device would look a lot better that way.
Mine time it after inactivity, but they are in quite often
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using xda app-developers app
In a dark area, yes. Otherwise, no. It uses the light sensor near the HTC logo. If you cover your hand over that area, the buttons should light up. Mine do.
