Does Sense still crash all the time on CleanRom? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Sense crashes on me constantly. I tried the fix suggested where you go unclick the activities setting in the development area, to no avail. Can any Cleanrom users tell me if this is problem for you (AT&T) after you rooted and installed CR on your phone?

What do you mean by crashing? Is it force closing or just reloading (get the loading circle)
If its reloading its because of HTC setting aggressive memory management.

I could have worded that better - I mean to say that HTC sense, on my vanilla AT&T rom, goes down a lot, and when you press the home button, it says "loading" for upwards of 20 seconds.
I followed the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599214, however while this seems to fix it for some folks, it does not fix it for others. It's still happening to me, sadly.
I am considering returning this for a SGIII, but I got to wondering if I root it and install CleanRom, maybe that fixes the issue to, in addition to removing the AT&T bloat.

That would be the aggressive management that HTC put into the phone same reason that the browser reloads the page after you close it.
If you find a ROM that locks sense into the memory then it should solve that.
I only have the t3 hox so I can't recommend any for at&t

bumping, in case some Cleanrom users can reply. I got really frustrated yesterday - set up my screens and launcher and folders all nice, just the way I like them, nad Sense reloaded - all of a sudden, the screens I had removed were back, my icons were all over the place, and my folders were not on the home screen. Super frustrating!

Hold on, it actually goes back to default layout after reloading as well?

Almost - I had five screens again, my folders were all bumped to the last screen (so I had to move them back to the home screen before I could delete the extra screens), and a bunch of icons appeared out of nowhere, all over the place. So, it didn't go back to default but it did jack everything up.
It may be something that never comes up because most people do not remove all the extra screens.

I doubt you're going to get many replies from CleanROM users over here, since you've posted this in the international (Tegra 3) subforums and CleanROM is for S4 devices so no-one here will be using it. You'd probably get a better response asking here (or you could maybe ask a mod to shift the thread for you).

WHOOPS! Thank you for pointing it out to me!

Well hello Welcome to the correct forums xD
CleanROM has many multitasking improvements, from what I've read, so it should help quite a bit.
And if you still don't like the multitasking, AOSP based ROMs such as CM9 or AOKP have perfect multitasking (I've been able to get up to 7 apps running with AOKP)

CleanROM 4.1
Using the latest version of CleanROM on the AT&T One X, I have none of the issues that you speak of. Multitasking is night-and-day (granted that you flashed the multitasking mod in the AROMA installer), battery life is stellar, and everything is rock-solid stable.

I've never seen sense reload on me but I don't play games much. Are you a big gamer? I've been using clean rom since it was introduced.

I haven't had Sense reload on me once since flashing CleanROM a month and a half ago. I play a ton of RAM heavy games too like NOVA 3 and as I said, not once has it happened.

I mostly use the web on mine, Google Music, and a couple minor games like Words By Post and Temple Run. Thank you all for the replies, this makes me feel a bit more hopeful. I'm a bit anti-Samsung at the moment, so I am glad to hear that maybe flashing a ROM will fix my problems. I was pretty close to just returning it.

Trust me man, flash CleanROM and you will fall in love with your HOX. The ROM is amazing and the dev is awesome. It is the way HTC should have shipped these things.

Is this cause for concern?

So I have had my Sensation for a week now and while it's been running almost flawless I have noticed something odd. On two occasions I have been several screens deep in an application. The most recent was while I was in the Google Market. After hitting the back (arrow) button several times, I noticed that the screen went white and HTC letters appeared. It's almost like it reset itself without the full reboot.
Has anyone else experienced this issue. Is it cause for concern? I have a week left to exchange it at Walmart, but would prefer not to go that route unless I have to do so.
Thanks for any and all replies.
It sounds like Rosie (Sense launcher) gets pushed out of the memory and has to re-start itself. Got this phone today and I've seen it more then once already. I think it's ridiculous that a phone with 700+ Mb or Ram is exhibiting that kind of behavior. Just shows how bloated Sense is.
Don't get me wrong, I like Sense, I just wish it would not take over the phone and would let us disable/uninstall/replace parts of it. Can't wait for CM on this device.
I just picked up my sensation and its done that several times already seems like its doing a soft reboot.

I've had this same issue occasionally as well. Can't recreate it, but it definitely happens.
Thanks for the info. On the one hand it's reassuring that it's happening to others, however, it doesn't mean that it's acceptable. One more reason to hope HTC unlocks the boot loader soon.
The 3D launcher is nice but I'm probably going to replace it with some thing like Go EX or ADW EX. If the launcher is that much of a ram hog it's not worth the eye candy.
I have had two units and they both have don it

Yep, that's exactly what it is. It's not a reboot, or a reset, or anything like that.
I got it quite a lot in the day or so that I used Sense, haven't seen it happen with ADW.Launcher.EX yet. ADW restarts occasionally on my HTC Desire (running CM7.1 nightlies) if I've been doing something memory intensive like playing a 3D game or browsing the internet with lots of windows.
CM7 is going to be brilliant on here. It'll be Sensational

Happens on mine each and every time I launch Firefox Beta... also happens almost randomly, even the tasks don't seem to use a lot of resources...
I find this a non issue. It does that to mine too but quickly fixes itself

I've seen it a total of two times the past week. I've been using Sense launcher the whole time and using the phone itself WAAAAAAAAAAY too much this past week. So for me it's been a very rare glitch.
Sense out of the box is always under-optimized.
Give me root! Or give me death!
The same thing happens on my wifes Thunderbolt so I'd say it may be a Sense optimization issue.

Speed problems with my Sensation!?!

The only real problem I have with the sensation, is it's speed. It's taking forever to get here. Sense 3.0 lagged my delivery time. Dual core my ass!
Anybody else having this problem? Figured I'd ask as all others seem to be having a problem in some way or another with the Sensation.

+1 Agreed.
Mine is flying. I think you're confuse about speed and smoothness. If you think you don't, exchange.
Honestly the Sensation doesn't seem any smoother with Sense 3.0 than my G2 running Virtuous Unity 1.24 @ 1.2ghz. But I bought it for the 4.3" screen and thin form factor.
Oh dear. I think you misread the original post.

Just wondering, do you consider this guy's Sensation fast and smooth?
Ok, want some quicktips to get a sensation out of your smartphone ?
-root it
-get some good system apps
-remove all unnecessary apps/systemapps
-secure it
-optimize it
-replace sense with zeam launcher/ something else.
-Overlock it if possible
-clean the autostarts
and voila, you got your sensation.
ps: for more information check out my sig.

I got a Sidekick 4G ( Sensation ) lolol .
about to get a OC'ed Lagfix kernal hehe . w/ a nice ROM w/ TouchWiz 4.0
I have used 4 brand new Sensations with nothing loaded on them and all of them have performed differently. I'm trying to make sense (pun intended) of it. The first one I got was fast and smooth, the second one was laggy as hell, the third was a little laggy and the forth one was fast and smooth. Does anyone know why the same device would act differently when it comes to performance?
Here is a little video I made. Let me know if yours is this fast.

That looks just like mine. I consider it fast and smooth. But then I'm coming from a Vibrant, a picture of which is in the dictionary under "laggy".
I tried a demo unit at a TMO store and it was not as smooth. A bit jerky or stuttery when flipping between home screens. I disabled animation, but it made no diff. So, it does seem there's an odd variation between phones.

Yea, I wouldn't keep the auto install option on. For some reason I think it makes the phone slower. What is the carousel effect? I know what the carousel is but what is it doing? Engaging every time you go to scroll side to side? Both mine and my wife's Sensations are pretty damn fast. Not quite as fast as the G2X since it's running vanilla but I have no doubt in my mind that the Sensation will be just as fast once we get the bloatware and Sense off of it. I have not restarted my phone for 3 days now and have never gone that long with any other Android device. Usually when day two rolls around, my devices start to bog out but not my Sensation. Might be the added RAM or something. Once we get everything off of it though. We are going to have over 400mb of free memory sitting on the phone.

If you go into privacy settings there is a option called "Back up my Settings" and "Automatic Restore". If you enable both of them, all of your settings and apps will be backed up on Googles servers so when ever you get a new phone or reset your phone, all of your apps will be installed automatically and all of your phone settings will stay the way you had them. I have done this about 6 times with the same phones and every time I do it, the phone performs slower for some reason. I know it sounds weird but it does. Try it out though. See what happens.

I guess you were talking about how long it took to get in the Sensation forums through the XDA app. Were you being vague on purpose? You made it seem like a general statement. Next time, try to specify what exactly is lagging.
The dual core processor had nothing to do with getting here. The second core will not kick in unless it needs to and lets be honest, the XDA app doesn't need two cores to run it. There have been plenty of times I have seen the dual core CPU do its thing. I blew through, what my Nexus S and Nexus 1 would have lagged through.
Lastly, to respond with an answer for your post. Sometimes these forums get a ton if traffic in a short period ff of time which causes them to lag. There are also plenty of people working on these forums all day long to keep them running so people like me and you can agrue over dumb **** the other person probably knows both about.

[Q] Virtuous Inquisition v3.0.0

Hi guys,
You guys might think im a newbie because i got zero posts. ( We'll actually i got 1 post after this one. =D)
I've been using roms a couple of years. I've never been posting or requesting on XDA. So this will be my first time. My first android phone was a HTC HERO G2 Touch. At that point i was researching and trying out roms. I was totally inlove with Android. I've been a Iphone user. HTC Hero came with the stock version 2.1.
But then i found Cyanogenmod they've managed to get Gingerbread 2.3 on the Hero. I came more in love with Android. After using the HTC Hero G2 a year or so it became boring the phone is getting slower and i saw a couple of friends have a faster Android phone. Then the HTC ChaCha came out. I thought im gonna change a bit from touch to a keyboard + touch. The bad thing about it. It wasn't S-off but S-on so i couldn't unlock the bootloader. I've been using the HTC ChaCha a couple of months but like the HTC Hero it became boring. I couldnt change roms because it wasn't S-offed. I was waiting on HTCdev to release the unlocked bootloader. But then a friend of mine he asked me if i wanna buy his HTC Sensation for 200euro's. He used it for like four months. He wanted a Iphone 4S. So i thought it's sounds pretty attractive. So i bought it a month ago. I allready put a custom rom a while back while he used it. (the Android Revolution HD 3.6.1 when it came out). When i got the phone i updated it to the latest version back then. Off course i've tried the ICS rom of ARHD. I was blown away by the looks of it. Then i came across Virtuous Inquisition. I wanted a FULLY ICS. Im now running the latest version v3.0.0. Its freaking smooth no force to close. Almost everything worked how i wanted it.
I got 1 issue about it. Skype. The one i called he sees me in green. I dont know if its about the rom or Skype.
Also i discovered something while i was playing around on the homescreen.
When you swipe with two fingers to the right you get a small pop up "Got rotate! false" and when you swipe with two fingers to the left it says "Got rotate! true". I thought it was a shortcut to change the settings of rotation of the screen but it wasn't. So i was wondering what it does. I've searched on the forums and i didn't found anything about it.
Can't wait till a FULLY WORKING ICS ROM without any problems.
I too have rooted my Sensation and installed the following:
Virtuous Inquisition 3.0.
SebastianFM 1.5Ghz Kernel
The Sensation now actually lives up to its name! This thing really flies! I am elated to get rid of the Sense UI and really love the Nova launcher. Despite the increase in clock speed the battery life is actually quite good.
I have tried to replicate your two finger swipe anomaly but cannot. That being, said, perhaps it is related to live wallpaper? I use the Beautiful Widget live weather wallpaper and it is somewhat interactive in that you can move the clouds and sun around. So, if you have a live wallpaper installed, maybe it too is interactive and reporting back these messages? Just a guess....
I am hopeful that a fix for the incoming call not showing up on the lock screen will be fixed soon as this is annoying. Another minor issue I and others are experiencing is the contact ringtone assignment not taking affect.
Overall this ROM breathes new life into the sensation!
Dennis
I tried replicating the error on my Sensation 4G running Virtuous Inquisition v3.0.0 was unsuccessful.

How stable is flashing the 1.5GHz kernel?
I remember it was quite unstable when I was on ARHD, has changes been made?
Personally the 1.5ghz kernel gave me a bunch of odd issues on this ROM. did a full wipe, standard 3.24 kernel linked on the ROM's page, and installed the newest version, zero issues. Reluctant to try the 1.5ghz again, not worth it imho. Maybe that's just my experience though.
Screenshots please? As for appearing green on Skype, this is the first time I've heard of such an issue.

Yeah you might be right. i got a live wallpaper the stock one when you install virtuos. I will try it out tonight without Live wallpaper.
Thread cleaned. Some of those posts were very disappointing.
if you have nothing useful or helpful to say, don't bother posting.
I'm happy to hand out bans to trolls...
Hey I was able to replicate the "got rotate! True" and "got rotate! false" ...but that was "as far as I got! True"
To do it put two fingers on the screen like they're at 12 and 6 on a clock, then swipe clockwise/counterclockwise.
I have none of the issues mentioned... Having tried ARHD GB and ICS basedroms...I have to say I'm completely blown away by the quality/stability and performance of this rom.
I have a question to the VI users that flashed their roms with 1.5ghz...has stability and battery life suffered at all?
Thanks

Benefits to desensing?

I asked this in a rom thread but I think this is a better place for it. What are the benefits to desensing? Is it just a personal preference or does it give other benefits?

Its all preference. However you may find some of the sense apps more to your liking. Such as the camera, email, and SMS. You can download Cleanrom DE. It is a desensed ROM. Basically and Aosp look with the sense apps.
Several roms have the option to desense I was just curious if there was other benefits such as better battery life or if removing sense which is known to be somewhat of a resource hog would give a better multitasking experience.
I like sense, but wouldn't want to give up a longer battery life for it.

I get about the same battery life on stock and aokp 1.3
In excited to try viperxl this weekend though

YMMV, but CleanROM 4.5 DE definitely has slightly better performance and battery life than CR4.5 and stock because of the debloating/desensing.

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted One XL on Telstra.
I am using the stock ROM until i have sussed stable custom ROMs.
I however dont like sense, and am using Apex Pro Launcher.
Im finding that unlocking from sleep & even switching between screens and apps it sometimes stutters.
Sense was actually a smoother experience.
Would this be that sense is still underlying in the background?
If so, can it be removed / disabled whilst on stock ROM?
Any tips on getting the UI to operate more smoothly?

Sense has not gone anywhere... It is still there, you're just using a different launcher. There is an option in Apex to "Keep in memory" in the advanced settings that you could try enabling. You could also try a custom rom like RebelROM, CleanROM, Nocturnal Xi40, or Viper XL, all of which offer a "desensing" option to remove a good chunk of sense while keeping the sweet camera working.

Understood. I know sense is still there. Being new to android im still trying to understand the relationships behind these things.
IE; sense is still running / slowing **** down despite not using it as my launcher?
Are there any good tutorials on sense, what it is, what it does?
Ive searched the forums but cant find anything.
As an android newbie im taking my mates advice and not messing about with any ROMs until i have a better understanding.
Until then i guess i just wanna 'desense' as much as i can on the stock rom.

Understood. I know sense is still there. Being new to android im still trying to understand the relationships behind these things.

Sense is more than just the launcher. Its also apps (like camera, Locations, Watch, Stocks, Weather, Music player), widgets, keyboard, and overall theming done by HTC. Plus the Sense framework is embedded in the ROM itself, so that is why Sense components (like the camera) can't be ported to AOSP ROMs. So that is what is meant by "Sense is still there" if you just replace certain components, or use a different launcher.
By replacing the launcher, you won't have the Sense launcher taking up memory (3rd party launchers are often smaller footprint). But really, this phone is powerful enough memory and CPU wise, that the difference in just replacing the launcher is negligible. On older phones (like my old Desire Z) it made a big difference. And the battery drain by Sense is also going to be negligible compared to things that suck up much more power, such as screen on time, downloading/streaming data, etc. So on this phone, its largely about personal preference.

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted One XL on Telstra.

Hey mate I'm on Telstra too. I'm using the ViperXL rom and it's really good! You can have it with or without Sense.

Cheers for that. Understood.
Also, i had a problem in my first month with data.
So i downloaded My Data Manager.
OS services uses more than 50% of my data. Approx 1mb per hour.
I googled it, i got a lot of different responses.
What is OS services and why is it chewing my data, what do i need to turn off?
Also as i was looking online for answers, WhatsApp had jumped from less than 1mb, to 11.1mb in less than 5 minutes.
I havent used WhatsApp in days. Its not possible to change permissions through the app but i have read that i can download an app to manually change specific app permissions?
Timmaa thanks for the heads up on viper, i came across is before but had asked a friend more knowledgable than myself and he said id be better off to wait for CM?

I used to use CM, but I find viper to be excellent. Actually, it's amazing. It's stable and has an arsenal of tweaks. The best one out there IMHO. But that's just my opinion, and your mate has one too. Unfortunately all you'll find on here is opinions, the best way to know is to flash it for yourself and see what you think as everyone has different needs etc when it comes to what they want from a ROM.
Oh but by the way, ViperXL has Sense 4.1 which is so much faster than the 4.0 on stock ROM. Supposedly uses less battery too. And the updated camera4.5 takes much better photos, they're superb!

As for the data I'm not sure, I've been using a data tracker and found some weird results too. Apparent my dialer has been using a lot of data, which I just don't understand.

Thanks, dude, I couldn't see the other posts, they are so tiny, you are literally my savior
On topic: No, S3 users will probably get it 2-3 weeks later, maybe more.
I saw, that some users reported having a brick with SuperCID, is this true?
Because I don't want to change my CID back and stuff
Busybox
Hi
Just updated via OTA, reinstalled CWM_Recovery and installed superSU 0.99.
Phone is rooted once again but it seems like busybox is unable to install, tried a few different versions and none seem to stick, a few even causes a crash/reboot of the phone.
Have a few programs that are reliant on Busybox to function.
Am i the only one with this problem ?
I think the update is rubbish. If anything its not as smooth as the Ics update, project butter must be a vanilla only experience because there is no way it's buttery smooth

I'm really annoyed about the new keyboard layout which was an utterly unnecessary change. Not to mention that the keyboard is somewhat laggy. Apart from that it's fine and I could live with it if I would get back full root functionality.
By the way, has anyone solved their root issues (SuperSU, Busybox, and a couple other apps and tools not working) yet?

Nope I'm also having the same issues. After reading over the superSU thread it seems like HTC have done something to prevent system changes so it's basically a case of waiting until some devs find a work around
Is there an app to reorder the notifications in the notificationbar? I have 2 apps as trigger and new notifications are in the middle of these apps. I want new notifications at bottom.
Haven't got the update yet, but I'd like to know if they solved the touchbutton issue? And does USB OTG work now without extra cables? The only 2 things I'm missing.
Touch button issue is better so far but cannot say for sure that it is fixed, since now we have the Google now issue but not as frequently as before.
The new issue for me after the update is that the hands-free control is not customisable through apps after update, only single click function works for me, no track skipping or volume control

The worst update I've made on any phone....ever!
I need to downgrade ASAP, however, because I'm a relative noob and I'm unrooted I need some assistance. Any advice will be appreciated.
Just installed and had 10 minutes with it. To me my phone definitely seems a little quicker and more responsive, might just be me being excited about new stuff though! I use Swiftkey so never touch the Sense keyboard, I just gave the new one a quick go and switched back to Swiftkey, I can type on it almost as quick as a real keyboard so it would take something amazing to shift me from it. I like what I see of Google Now so far, we'll see how it pans out though. The camera changes seem good, fairly subtle differences but I think it's quicker too. I like the power saver mode, think that will be a useful one. Switching off data when the screen is off is a great feature.
So far, so good.

Which processor do you have? S3 or S4? And have you played any games on it? Subway Surfer was quite quick and smooth on ICS, with Jellybean it's like a buffering movie on one of them crappy Chinese servers....

I noticed that! Subway surfer was laggy on the JB update. Restored my ICS rom and it's smooth as butter. WTF! And it's bound to be s4 because the s3 doesn't have it yet
I am pretty fond of the new No-Lockscreen option. Something I have missed from the AOSP versions, probably the only reason I will stick with sense on JB.

Not sure, but since data is off while screen off, how come I receive my whatsapp messages, emails n stuff? I am just curious, since I read about power saver a while ago in One X forum, but forgot that and you reminded it to me.
P.s: I have power saver on since the update
