[Q] Whats the deal with flashing radios??

I have seen a couple of different ROMS suggesting you flash a certain radio for them. I've heard that messing up while flashing a radio bricks the phone so I'm kind of thinking I want to steer clear of that.
Is it really necessary to change radios between ROMS?
I'd like to know about that as well.

You don't have to flash a radio, but if you don't you should find the RIL files for your current radio and flash them for best performance and gps signal.

Some ROMs work better with radios recommended by that ROMs developer.
You don't necessarily need to flash different radios unless you experience performance issues with GPS, Wi-fi, Phone signal etc.
Hope this helps.

Outdated Radios / Auto-updating?

When I've previously ROM'd my phones in the past, one issue I always came across was the radios getting out dated. I found myself scheduling a "once a month check" calendar alert to remind me to go out and find the latest radios to update.
Ugh, tedious... I hear the stock ROMs from carriers auto-update the radios? If not, is that what the PTL updates do?
Now that I am back to Android after a limited WP7 hiatus, I'm about to ROM again. But this time, I want to have these radios auto-updating with a custom ROM.
Is that possible? Or is that part of the big-brother stuff from the carrier's software that does that?
Using custom roms or stock roms will indeed update your radio.
However, if you've got a ****ty network operator, he might not update as often as needed. I was stuck with radio problems with some customs roms too...
Be careful, newest is far from always better with radio versions ! They mix a lot of parameters, sometimes you get a better signa, at the expense of a lot of battery life.

Interesting. Could you explain what a "network operator" is? Is that someone managing the ROM's radios remotely? Like, the person to donate to?
Who is updating the radios "for me"? I didn't think that was automatic with ROMs?

Been there, done that! lol I use have 3 or 4 radio packages on my phones, ready to install depending on where I flew to. "Damn, got a bad signal here. Let me try a different radio. Ah yes, there we go."

[Q] No reception/wifi after flashing

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. Been going at this for almost 3 hours now
I'm a tmo US user with the sensation 4g. Tried a couple different roms and found reception horrible with all. I then started to mess around with different radios and RILs only to find myself now with no reception and little to no wifi no mater what I flash.
Tried wiping and flashing CM9 nightly and that didnt help either.
Not sure if I need to provide any more infornation but would obviously apreciate any input

Can different roms make a big difference in signal strength?

I am many times in hotel rooms without free wifi, so I rely on my 4g for internet. I assume that there would be differences between stock and aosp roms, but within each rom type is a big difference in signal strength possible? Sorry if newbish question.
Correct me anyone if I'm wrong but based on MY experience different ROMS should NOT make a differnce in signal quality/connection...however different kernels I believe can. The different kernels sometime handle the switch over from 3g to 4g better and/or help maintain that 4g connection better than others. Also the other determining factor on your radio signal is different radio software...search the forums for radios and I'm sure you'll find mention of vgl1 and/or f2 etc etc...these are different radio software and some people have better results with others. Its always best to simply try each rom/kernel even radio and see what works best for you. We all have galaxy s3's however that does not make them identical.

Which radio and/or ROM gives you the best signal?

Hi there. I'm trying to see which ROMs give better signal (i.e. Sense rom vs. AOSP [lollipop]) and which radios work the best.
I'm on the newest radio and the newest GPE lollipop version but I'm curious as to which radio is the best and whether sense ROMs have a better signal (and speeds) than AOSP does.
Any help is appreciated

Contrary to popular belief, ROM/radio/firmware has little effect on cellular signal strength or dataspeeds. Certainly nothing measurable. Some might show more "bars" than others, but the raw signal strength doesn't change significantly.
