I have seen a couple of different ROMS suggesting you flash a certain radio for them. I've heard that messing up while flashing a radio bricks the phone so I'm kind of thinking I want to steer clear of that.
Is it really necessary to change radios between ROMS?
I'd like to know about that as well.

You don't have to flash a radio, but if you don't you should find the RIL files for your current radio and flash them for best performance and gps signal.

Some ROMs work better with radios recommended by that ROMs developer.
You don't necessarily need to flash different radios unless you experience performance issues with GPS, Wi-fi, Phone signal etc.

I am having trouble finding a radio that works with this ROM.
The main problem I am having with the radios that I have tried is:
Weak WiFi signal and GPS not connecting fast enough or not connecting at all.
So could someone please recommend to me a radio that they have working well with this ROM.

What radio are you running currently?
What RIL are you using?
Have you tried "double-flashing" the radio/ril?
Have you rebooted at least twice after radio-related changes?

Yes I have rebooted numerous times over a long period of using this radio...still giving me problems.

Look at post #1 of the Inspire Radio Thread in the dev section. It has instructions on how to check the RIL on your phone, and links to matching RIL's for various radios, including yours.

I've been having this same problem aswell, I have yet to figure it out, and I don't think anyone here knows the solution. I start to wonder if HTC has more than one wifi antenna going around. Or maybe something is just wrong with ours.
The only thing though is, it only does this with AOSP roms, sense roms are just fine. I say give one a shot.

Yes, that's the radio I'm using.
Dont know why so many are having problems with radio's.. I have flashed all nightlies with no changes to radios or ril and everything works great....just have always done a clean install and all is good...........
...I've flashed kernels that were less than optimum for WiFi...try flashing a different kernel?

Me neither. Seems like someone's always having some sort of problem. I have the feeling the common denominator may be your last sentence.... Clean install.
I think a lot of people are looking for some magical power to give them super ultra lightning fast data speeds and 1/2 second gps lock times with 1/2 meter accuracy. Or something.

Me niether, in the begenning i was afraid of bricking so i never flashed any radio and used the same radio that ace hack kit installs.. lol now i just updated to 4/29 update of att and all is well..

I just came from the HD2 so I'm new to the inspire. I've searched through all the threads to try and find if there's an overall best radio for the inspire, but there doesn't seem to be any definitive answer. Are most of the radios rom specific, or is there one that's best for all of them?

Radio performance varies with each individual location and phone. You really need to test that for yourself. The recommended radio for each rom is the one the developer tested for their specific rom. You may find that another radio and ril work better for your situation.

12.39a.60.19x_26.06.06.30_M or 12.54.60.25x_26.09.04.11_M2 seem to the main two radios that people are using on the Inspire for the most part. These are the main two radios that most roms recommend. I have used them both and they are both good. They both have ups and downs so I go back and forth some. Just make sure to flash the matching RIL with it.
So after doing some research into this more, I found that after the rooting process, alot of users HSUPA becomes broken if you dont skip the last step where it flashes the stock radio back after the downgraded one. Also, flashing any other radios than the stock one can also cause you to lose HSUPA. I verified this on my own phone after using Bubby's one click, and was getting less than .5 Mbps up and down. After reflashing the stock ROM and radio, restoring my previous ROM, and flashing the matched RIL, I now consistently get over 5 Mbps up and down. Any of you guys noticed this or know about it?

I didn't have this problem. I just used the ace hack kit and then flashed the radio and Ril I wanted. I get around 5.5 down and around 1.2 up during non-peak times.
Been lurking here for a few weeks, reading, studying, learning, and my eyes are still red...
I just wanted to share my experience so far and get some feedback.
Rooting
I followed the 1 click Ace Hack Kit to the letter, still had an issue where my phone wouldn't boot, screen was on but black, and had to re-install stock from the Ace Kit to correct it. Phone Rooted
Custom Rom
Reviewed all the Inspire Roms and decided on the Revolution HD 6.1.3
Again following everything to the letter, I couldn't get SuperWipe to run, it would abort, but did the full manual wipe (wipe data/factory reset - dalvik cache) in the the boot loader as in the sticky guide for flashing roms, radio's, etc. Was able to install 6.1.3
Q: Is there really any difference between doing it manually and running the SuperWipe Script?
Radio's - Read the Radio Sticky numerous times. Shoot, so far the recommended radio for HD is kicking but however, still have a fundemental question.
Q. I get that it's a gamble, but what sets these radio's apart from what AT&T gives on their stock phone?
I read in the radio sticky they are sort of area specific or vary by location. May or may not be good, try it... I don't get that because I could buy a Inspire in CA, use it in FL, and the stock radio doesn't change. I get that these coders and developers are freaking awesome and above my head, but intrigued none the less.
Doesn't it really come down to tower coverage? Still putting the radio puzzle together after much reading.
Anyway, I wanted to post a BIG THANKS in the Revolution HD Thread but can't as of yet.
I really like the 6.1.3 ROM so far. Some here may hate Sense, but I like the eye candy.
XDA is cool site and still have a lot to learn.

Some will say the radio is region specific. I and others find no evidence of that. The Dev will recommend the radio for the matched ROM you choose. That should be your best bet.

I actually don't know if superwipe does anything special or just takes the hassle out of wiping partitions and FDR and cache. in my experience it doesn't make a difference which I do as long as I do one or the other, or both.
As for radios, there are different settings in the build.prop I believe (correct me if i'm wrong) that's set by each version of each radio (and other settings in more places?) but basically it boils down to different settings causing the phone to interact with the network differently. I never had luck with any of the recommended revolution radios so I would always stick to an inspire OTA or update radio and flash the corresponding RIL (radio interface layer, must match the radio you install).
come to think of it now, it might be the RIL that sets the build prop and other settings. now i'm just confused...
The build prop will remain the same regardless of what RIL or radio you use. The devs tweak settings in the build prop to try and squeeze a little more bandwidth but honestly I have never seen a definite increase in speeds by changing these settings. When the inspire was released it did not have the necassary settings to run 4g. They released a radio and new build prop with an update that enabled 4g. People on 3g would not have seen a difference even to this day. This all took place in the froyo days. The build prop has several settings for many aspects of the phone. The build prop only changes when edited by you or the dev.
It's always good to use recommended radios as that will match the RIL in your phone. I have read that new RIL's are backwards compatible as long as you are using a froyo radio on froyo and a gingerbread radio on gingerbread. The only official gingerbread radio released for the inspire is 26.10.04.03 which goes with RIL 2.2.0160. So in my exeperience as long as the RIL is this or higher you might as well just use the official radio. The one recommended for arhd is 26.13.04.19 which is what matches 2.2.0179 but 26.10.04.03 will also work since the RIL is newer than the radio. But if you used 26.13.04.19 on an older RIL like 2.2.0160 you may encounter problems.
As always though, do not report bugs or make any judgements on performance, unless you are using the recommended radio and have not changed the RIL.

I travel alot and can tell you that it really can depend on where you are. One radio and ril works great in alaska but if I go to the lower 48 I normally have to swap them for a different set to get better signal.

Technically as there is only 1 official radio/ril for ATT gingerbread I would be curious to what you use and where. I know you have mentioned radios being location dependant but I can't recall you ever saying what you use.

Is what I use in alaska as the ATT rom and ril give me less signal then this one and when I go into the lower 48 I use

I realize many of you see this as a dumb question. But I see a lot of posts about radios. I've tried looking around the web what it is but couldn't really find good explaining information. I see a lot of posts for flashing the radio and a lot of different versions.
I'm running MIUI on my Sensation 4G and if radio is something I need to flash then I want to know what it is before I try flashing and brick my phone. So I've managed to find the version I have so if someone can point me the right direction I'd be very grateful.
So the main question is - WHAT IS RADIO?

the radio pretty much just has to do with the wireless connectivity of ur phone, so ur wifi, bluetooth, 3g all controlled by your phones radio.
you shouldnt have to flash a new radio for every rom, if your facing problems, and think a new radio could fix them then you could try a new radio if you wanted.

Flashing the radio is just about the only sure fire way of bricking it.. It's one of those things people are most skeptical about flashing. No nandroid will save you with an improperly flashed radio
EDIT: I've been flashing roms for a long time now and not once have I ever had to flash a new radio.

OK. I installed the HD Revolution 3.6.9 ROM days ago and have 2 major issues. As I am a new member, I am unable to post in the developmental section. Grateful for the OP to ask the question as I am also seeking to know "what radio is".
Although, I also want to ask - what is a kernel?
I believe thousands of members installed that HD Revolution 3.6.9 ROM and I couldn't find any reference for bluetooth and mms issues.
My phone can only detect my Nokia phone, my Plantronics bluetooth M100 is undetectable.
I am also unable to send MMS and yes, I tried the original settings, called the network and played with different settings but problem persists.
I checked the Hardware Information of the phone and it says "Bluetooth address - unavailable"
Kernel is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. So basically kernel tells all the hardware what to do (overclocked processors, undervolted batteries and etc) So far best one I've tried for Sensation 4G is the 2.6.35.14 Trinity S4G. Processor is overclocked to 1.7Ghz from stock 1.2 Ghz and the battery life is great!

btw try wiping you sd card and then flashing the Rom. helped me few time (im no developer )

Well that I'm not sure how accurate this statement is. That's why I started this thread just to know what it is. But from all the info I gathered online, you don't really need to flash a radio. Every thread with radios I saw that ppl will put a warning that you might brick your phone. So, my phone works great, never had any problems so I'll stay on the safe side (for now) and just do more research

What're the benefits of flashing radios?
Is it better to flash radios or stick with the stock ones?
I'm not even sure how it works much, since I've never touched mines..
Ive heard stories where flashing radios just made people's problems worst ...
And I heard some tip before that it's better to just stick with the stock one...
They are all stock, just pulled from different firmware versions. It's probably best to use the radio that matches the base of your rom, but some people have reported better results with different radios. If you have problems with a particular radio, you can just flash a different one.

With stock I mean the one that comes with the phone when you bought it ..lol

Radio flashing is almost always a trial and error affair, which is why you have heard of some people have worse reception after flashing a new radio. This is due to the fact that radio reception is often very geographically specific (as in specific town, or even specific tower/towers). So what works for some people, may not work well for you. A different radio may get you slightly better reception and battery life, or might make it worse. But the difference is usually not a huge one.
Newer radios can sometimes yield slightly better results than older ones. But again, its not always a sure thing. Lots of people had better WiFi reception with newer radios, while others did not.
Radios are also matched to ROMs via RIL. Although I haven't noticed this in itself to make a huge difference.
If you are on a custom ROM, and the dev recommends a certain radio, then try to use that. Otherwise, if you are getting pretty good reception and battery life, and you are in doubt about flashing radios, just leave it alone.
If you are on the 1.14 hboot that came with the 2.20 AT&T firmware, none of this may matter for you, as you cannot flash Sense radios on hboot 1.14, and you are stuck with the one you are on (or can only upgrade via OTA or RUU). CM10 radios can still be flashed.
