I lost my sgs4g recently and was looking into getting an htc sensation. One thing I'm noticing is that the screens crack pretty easily (falling from 5ft). The sgs4g has gorilla glass and I would drop it plenty of times and although it would fall apart without the case(back cover and battery pops out), the screen would never crack. From what i have seen, the htc has gorilla glass yet it cracks so easily. Why is this? Is there a screen defect with the phone? From what I've seen so far, the phone seems great but the screen issue users seem to be having concerns me.

i know of a digitizer issue but an easily crackable screen? never heard that one before
ok i read a bit further and the way most people spoke of the phone,it had me think they were one and the same. the digitizer will crack easily but the screen itself will be fine am i correct on that?
Is there anyone else that would like to chime in on this? I remember reading a thread where a person asked whether if the replacement digitizer would be gorilla glass which had me think that the digitizer and screen are one and the same. Also are there any other issues with the phone besides the digitizer that i should know about?

the display and the digitizer screen are separate pieces
the digitizer is a part of the gorilla glass screen and the display is beneath that
it doesnt crack, it shorts out and stops working properly for some. it can easily be prevented. if it happens, its an easy fix and if you want a new one you can replace it i think its about 20 bucks
oh ok great how can i prevent it? and is the easy way to fix it the software update as mentioned in a stickied thread? i basically dont want it to ever look like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142379
All you need to do is to be a little bit carefull whit your phone ..
I wonder why are you so worried lol do you drop your phones alot ?

The Sensation is a quite durable phone... I've dropped it a couple of times with no issues...

The Sensation does NOT have gorillaglass.
You can effortlessly push down hard enough on the digitizer to get it to touch the actual LCD panel underneath. It's an oleophobic plastic.

oh, is that right? you might want to check THE GORILLA GLASS WEBSITE

Which brought me to another question. Is it possible that certain phones have lower quality gorilla glass screens than others?

i would say yes
just from the design of our screen (curved around the edges) it could possibly make it a tiny bit weaker

I scratched the screen of my wife's Nexus S and was wondering whether I should try polishing the screen with iDrops (or a similar scratch removal polish)?
Main reason for this question is that I do not know whether the Nexus S screen type (capacitive SAMOLED) will be damaged (cosmetically or functionally) if polished. Thanks for your input!

I would think that polishing it may remove the oleophobic coating on the phone. I wouldn't do it, but maybe someone else on here knows better.
Out of curiosity, do you mind if I ask how you scratched the screen? Did it take a lot to scratch it? How bad is the scratch?
Thanks for your input...I won't be too concerned if it would lose the oleophobic coating as I will install a screen protector on it anyhow.
I scratched it when I dropped it out of my hand while picking it up. The sides of the phone are thin and slick and I think it is easy to let it slip for that reason. The phone dropped with the screen down on the stove, was a bad fall but I think the screen would have been largely undamaged if it would have had a screen protector installed.
Annoying is that I had ordered both the screen protector and silicone case for my wife's phone 2 weeks before I dropped it. If these items would have come in on time I would not have damaged her phone...
I wouldnt either. Seems a bit risky but u never know. It wont looks its touch factor but it will lose the top ole coat. Just slap a screen guard and ur good to go.
Don't know if it helps but I scratched my galaxy s screen which is samoled, and tried to polish it out, it left a permanent smudge ,looking worse than the original scratch!
Thanks for the input, guys. It looks like it is better to not polish it as it seems too risky.
Your best bet is to convince Best Buy that there is a defect with your phone and you need a replacement.
Don't feel as though you're scamming them. They scam people on a daily basis.
I noticed a few scratches on the bottom part of my screen and convinced BB that it was a defect so they exchanged it. I had also spoken to a represenative on the phone and was told that you can only do an exchange if you payed full price for the phone. Don't know if its true but that's what I was told

Related question: would BB exchange the phone for scratches without a problem if one has the black tie protection plan.
There are replacements on Ebay but none come with instructions. Does anyone know how to take it apart and replace the screen?
Look it up on YouTube. I did it on my first EVO, and I must say, it was quite easy. It might be a little different for your device, but if you have even a little technical expertise, it shouldn't be a problem. WORD OF CAUTION, though. There is adhesive under the digitizer/top screen, so use a heat gun, or hair dryer, to loosen it first. It is like a box shape all the way around under the digitizer/top screen in a thin strip.

I haven't found any teardowns online, but it shouldn't be too hard as long as you have patience and be extremely careful. It looks like once the battery cover is off, there are 4 or 5 screws that you'll need to remove. Once that panel is off you should be halfway there. Just be careful because you're now in the belly of the beast. It would also help to take pictures along the way in case you need to know what goes where when re-assembling the phone.
gorilla glass?
might be a stupid question... but what happened to the gorilla glass?.. i.e. how high did you drop it from, etc.

Anything on this Earth can be shattered by different frequencies and impact. Gorilla Glass doesnt break if its from YOU pushing it in and stuff..Not from drops.
Try cnn.cn if they sell the part they'll have a guide.

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant and shatterproof; however it's still glass. Same principal as "Water Resistant" phones or items, you can't submerse them, but you can get them wet.

Slipped out of my hand while getting up off a chair, fell about 2 feet, landed flat on the glass side onto some tile. Heard a pop sound on impact. It shattered the bottom corner.
I've owned several HTC phones with gorilla glass and this is the first time something like this has happened. I think the fact it has a aluminum housing has something to do with it. Plastic housings can flex a little on impact. Aluminum doesn't flex as much and since glass can, it caused the screen to shatter since the energy had nowhere to go.
Definitely getting a Casemate or Otterbox (if they release it) once I get the digitizer replaced.
I've been looking all over for a tear down but no luck yet. I might just have to wing it and try doing it myself with one of the kits on Ebay. I really hate having to go in blind.
Can you not get it replaced on insurance? I feel for you buddy!
Cnn.cn does have them, probably more reliable than ebay. great opportunity to makes the first guide!
I would buy from cnn.cn here.
Unfortunately they do not have a video up yet but seen as they sell the part, and if you buy it from them, you may be able to request it from them. Worth a try.
i know it can break. its just supposed to be harder than normal. i just wanted to know if it was from a "normal" situation or something out of the ordinary.
will definitely get an otterbox as well. if they ever come out with one..
2 feet drop on tile is how i broke my iphone 3g :/
I know it's not the same as our phone but the steps should be close enough. Here's a teardown video that engadget re-posted today of the EVO 3D http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/01/htc-evo-3d-torn-down-three-dimensional-magic-revealed-video/
I know this thread might be dead but the cracking of the screen happened to me too. I was wondering if anyone knew of a guide or could give me some tips on how to replace the digitizer since I will be attempting to do it myself.
Can you post a pic. Of your broken phone? I would like to see what kind of damage a 2 foot fall made

I just posted a vid on how to do this. Go to youtube.com and search on HTC Sensation Screen Repair.
or type /watch?v=T5bWl73O9ss after youtube.com.
(my old account was disabled for some reason and now I can't paste URLs... hope someone else can make that linkable)
Hey guys and gals,
I've never owned a device with Gorilla glass display since my Vibrant and I only had it for a few days. I was wondering, for those that do not use a screen protector. Is a screen protector needed?
I've always used Invisashelid but I really like the feel of just glass and if I got even the tiniest scratch I would O.C.D on it and it would dive me nuts.
So in short, does the Gorilla Glass work well enough to where you don't need a screen protector at all?
The guy at T-Mobile told me that the Sensation does not have GG but after doing to little Google-ing it seems it does. I know this is a funny question but I wanted to get peoples opinions about it before I made my phone naked (besides the case).
If you're even remotely OCD (which you claim you are)..USE PROTECTION! Then you can only blame yourself.

Major fail on my part, I have no idea how I didn't see that . Thanks for the heads up, I'll close the thread.
I scratched up my screen (its really a small scratch but annoys me that its there), so now I plan on replacing it.
I've replace digitizers for friends phones before but the one thing I never thought about is whether or not these replacement, remanufactured digitizers are made using same gorilla glass that the original ones are made of. I'm sure they aren't OEM even though most of them say they are.
I would hate to replace my outside glass for one less durable because of one annoying blemish.
I have my eyes on this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-HTC-Sen...ultDomain_0&hash=item35b3232346#ht_3860wt_952
Does anyone have a replaced digitizer and have any complaints about their screen scratching up easily?

I bought a day one Sensation I've Dropped it from a 8foot Ladder.. screen never Scratched or Broken.. I had to get it Replaced because Dust got behind the Screen and now I phoned phone from about a foot off ground and it cracked.. I think they are even using normal glass again.. BS... Stick with Gorilla Glass
That really doesn't mean anything to be fair, drops are a crap shoot, there are about a million different ways a phone can hit the deck. Some survivable, some not, regardless of height.
its all the same, more or less.
No two panels will be the same, even if their both from HTC. Some might have undetectable imperfections that could have a nice place for a break to start.
I was somewhat unlucky with my first digitizer. It might have had an imperfection along the edge that allowed it to break
Real HTC glass: 3 foot drop - broken
Glass from amazon: 6 foot drop - still working
Anyone know a good site to purchase a glass replacement. I found on Amazon but it was shipping from Hong Kong, dont want to wait 3-4 weeks to find out its cheap glass.
hi guys ive noticed that when typing on the display without much pressure i get a rainbow affect only for the time im applying pressure just wondering does anyone else have this problem or am i developing a hardware problem
its a bit like applying pressure on my laptop display with not much force
Are you using a screen protector? If you are, is it possible the protector is not sitting right against the screen?
I have had two idol 3 phones and I didn't notice any rainbow affect on either phone.

ya i had a glass one installed removed it and still the same so thinking it maybe faulty
I used both phones with a glass protector and not problems with or without the protector.
Sounds like the top glass is not fully bonded to the lcd.
