Hi everyone,
I figured I would start this thread to give everyone a place to post their APN issues/fixes/work arounds to maybe cut down on the questions being asked in the development forums. I will include any of the fixes/workarounds I have seen so far and try to keep this thread updated with any new ones that come about. I have learned so much on here on XDA just by searching and reading, I hope that this thread can do the same for anyone else looking for answers. Thanks/credit for all these fixes/work arounds goes out to all the OP's (special thanks to Martovitz for inspiring me to write this) Again this is just random things people have tried that have worked for them, this is NOT a step by step, THEY MAY OR MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU, and they are in no particular order, everyones phone is different:
APN Voodoo:
1) Try Holding power button down while holding volume up to reboot phone.
2) Try pulling battery out while the phone is on, let it sit for a minute, then restart.
3) Try toggling airplane mode on wait a minute, then turn it back off.
4) If simple user is selected in your APN menu try selecting T-Mobile. If this fails try deleting simple user APN.
5) Go into settings>wireless>mobile networks. -let it search, pick one, let it 'error' then select the 'select automatically' option -wait a second, press back to the home screen, wait two more seconds APN issues disappear
6) Run fix permissions in ROM Manager
7) Replace Sim card, try new UICC sim card specifically for 3g/4g devices.
8) Try flashing new ROM while in a good T-Mobile area (ie full bars of reception) to register on network
9) Try reinstalling ROM using this process:
a) Wipe cache
b) Wipe Dalvik
c) Flash ROM
d) Flash gapps
e) Fix Permissions
f) Reboot
10)
a)Turn on WiFi and make sure you're connected.
b) Go into the Market, search "APN Backup".
c) Download the program called "APNsBU (ROOT)"
d) Open the program and click on the "Backup APNs" button.
e) After that's done, click on the "Restore APNs" button. It will prompt you to reboot your phone.
f) After the reboot, open the APNsBU program, click on the menu button on your phone and click "View APNs".
g) You should be able to see "Simple" and "T-Mobile US." Turn off your WiFi and you should be good to go!
11) The fix that's been working for me 100% is to just delete the APN type on both the T-Mobile US and Simple and then make sure T-Mobile US is selected
11) Use ROM Manager to "Reboot into Recovery", once recovery boots simply select "reboot system now" and let the phone boot back up. That's it, when the phone boots back up the apn settings will be restored and data will be working like it should.
***Disclaimer: I am in no way responsible for any damage you do to your phone trying these fixes/work arounds***
pretty awesome thread, thanks for sharing your experiences
Would someone be willing to type up or link to the reason why the APN problems manifest? I really appreciate the list of (supposed) fixes, but I'd also like to know why the problems exist in the first place.
I honestly don't think anyone really knows, but I'm willing to bet with the release of official gingerbread update these problems will disappear
Maybe if everyone starts posting the problems their having and where, when, why, and how they started we could narrow it down

APN Issues only occur with not stock roms for me.
Apn issues:
They basically give u no data and when u go to apn settings there are no presets. This usually doesn't happen on first boot on cm. But when u reboot everything dissapears. Some fixes use to work for me but now data works when it wants to

Exactly my problem or when I am on wifi and turn it off I don't get data back either
See and the really weird thing is you get people like me that have never had any apn problems .... but I have only flashed Cm7 rom starting with nb#32. I haven't used any other roms.... maybe that's a possible reason why i have no apn issues.

Have u tried apn'sBU? It fixes every time for me. Usually happens first reboot after new flash (not the reboot out of cwr).
Yah, it's a crazy issue. Cm7 is the only rom I've flashed, I did a few full wipes around nightlies 38+ figuring it would have to help. Made no real difference.
Good luck.

Are you having just apn issues or something else?? Apn should be a workaround ill be it annoying to deal with but at least workable, so is something else not working out??

Think its just apn, running the stock gb update fine . There may have been one other gb rom where my data was working but not sure . Cm just isn't working for me ,

My data/apn fix...
Okay, I guess this isn't technically a "FIX", but it WILL get your data working again until the next time the apn settings decide to mysteriously disappear.
Use ROM Manager to "Reboot into Recovery", once recovery boots simply select "reboot system now" and let the phone boot back up. That's it, when the phone boots back up the apn settings will be restored and data will be working like it should.
Wish I had an actual fix but this is MUCH better than nothing, and in my opinion easier than taking my case off and pulling the battery every time.

After installing MIUI I can`t enable data transfer (2g/3g internet). Data transfer is turning on, but there is no 2g/3g logo and internet. This happens after installing all MIUI stock and custom roms. APN settings is correct, before it was ok. I`m installing via Clockwork recovery v5. Device is G2x (P999)
What should I do? How to enable it?
I believe for the g2x you should see an H next to the bars, that is if you are in a good service area.
Otherwise I think it also shows G, and E.
If it doesn't have anything at all, then I'm not sure.
Does the internet work when you go inti the browser?

I had this problem before, go to ur APNs and go to authentication and make the authentication "None" instead of "Not set". That will enable ur data

Hey go to SETTINGS->MOBILE NETWORKS->ACCESS POINT NAMES-> in here select option button in your android phone, in the menu select NEW APN, you will get the APN settings as seen in this. In the link ACCESS NUMBER = SERVER in mobile.
As I am not allowed to post link for first ten TIMES! will guide you through
google search -> "vodafone apn address" the third result will be GPRS APN Settings with Username and Password - Modem Unlock. Click it and follow the method above mentioned.

EDIT: RIGHT AFTER POSTING, MY PHONE RANDOMLY STARTED WORKING. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I DID BESIDES POST HERE. MAGIC.
I installed Cyanogen version 7.2.0 just fine using the guide that was found here: http://www.mrmuh.com/2012/01/update-a-motorola-milestone-from-motorola-firmware-to-cyanogenmod-7/
However, the next morning I think I enabled the 2g/3g switch widget - and then my phone entered into a constant and continuous loop of "com.android.phone has unexpectedly closed" - and couldn't connect to cell service.
In a panic, I searched everywhere for fixes. I then tried a few of the fixes which instructed you to download "sqlite editor" and do some edits to the settings file. I did this, along with a couple of other network edits, resetting them to "0" instead of the "1" they were currently set to. No help.
Finally, I went into the Open Recovery system and did a full reset on cache/factory reset/etc. and then rebooted into cyanogen. Now my network won't even connect for a half a second and then crash like before - just straight up NO CONNECTION.
Now I've went through and attempted changing back some of those settings I messed around with in Sqlite - but to no avail.
Anyone with any ideas on how I can get an operating phone again, please let me know. I noticed I still have all my apps from previously, so I don't think I'm really factory resetting the phone. That could be part of the issue, I'm sure....I am very depressed and hoping for a miracle!!
Look into installing minimod recovery and then flashing the correct radio for your location after a full wipe.
If you do a google search you should find minimod. I'm on my phone or I would just link you.

OK Thanks for your reply.
However, randomly, just after I posted this - I looked down and my phone had a full 2G Connection. Went into baseband settings, enabled 850 band 3G, and now I have full 3G connectivity.
I have no clue how this happened. XDA forum is magical?
Thanks again for your reply, but thankfully I don't need the minimod suggestion as of now!!
You're welcome. You might want to go ahead and install minimod though. I made the mistake of not having it installed and flashed a new rom without the ability to select bands and was without a phone all day. It's better safe than sorry.

Go download a apndroid.apk Google it.
that happened to me too
So today CM 7.2 RC1 was released for all supported devices. Here are some links
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cyan...rc1-is-upon-us
http://get.cm/?device=speedy
So I wiped my device clean and flashed the zip, and after booting up successfully (shows the screen that says "Touch the Android to begin") it just reboots on its own, and the process repeats. I double checked that the md5 was clean, and I tried wiping and flashing several times with the same results. Is this happening to anyone else?
Same for me here.
Probly a stupid question but if I'm going from 7.1 to 7.2 do I NEED to do a full wipe? Can't I just wipe dalvik, cache and flash?

Usually you could but had risk of error, with me, it just made the reboots happen at 5 minutes intervals instead of 10.
Not sure if this is coincidence or not, but after about 5-6 reboots, I skipped the sign in, then quickly turned off the GPS. The phone stopped rebooting, even after turning the GPS back on. I have no clue what fixed this, but it has stopped rebooting now.

Cool but is audio working? And why is every single RC release for speedy by CM unstable? This GPS reboot thing has been a issue before but they don't seem to fix it lol.

I see, I'm thinking the reboot issue has to do with the kernel. Try a different kernel and that should fix it.

Since this discussion is going in two threads, I will let everyone know that using one of Sparksco's kernel ports fixes the reboot issue.
Edit: Though the kernel ports fix the GPS reboot, they take away all audio.

Agreed. I have tried just about every kernel I can get my hands on. The ones that boot have no audio, the rest simply don't boot or bootloop or reboot after a moment or two (haven't tried the default kernel and turning GPS off/on yet).
I fail to understand how they let 7.2 out for the Shift when it isn't booting up reliably for the majority of users. At what point did it become safe to say it is a Release Candidate? I'm beginning to think it more a Return To Your Previous ROM Candidate.
[edit]
I just flashed back the default kernel with GPS disabled and it booted without issue. Enabled GPS after boot and it works without reboot. Rebooting phone with GPS enabled still results in bootlooping, tho.
So, here's my proposed solution to those still having problems, want audio, and can live without GPS being enabled all the time (since no audio also means no call audio, this should be the majority of you):
1. Flash the 7.2 zip.
2. Immediately flash pershoot kernel (the ones that boot without audio, like v14 port).
3. Boot and immediately disable GPS.
4. Reboot into recovery and reflash the 7.2 zip. (NO NEED TO WIPE ANYTHING BUT DALVIK CACHE, for those who are already setup on 7.2 or coming from 7.1)
5. Boot normally.
NOTES:
A. If you attempt to boot or reboot with GPS enabled, you will get caught in a bootloop again. Simply follow the steps above again to turn it back off.
B. You CAN turn GPS on after boot and use it without issue. But you MUST disable before powering off or rebooting, else you'll have to do the above steps again.
C. Even if you can live without audio, I advise AGAINST using the pershoot ports on 7.2 for daily use. Something is causing that kernel to drain battery at about 3-5 times the normal rate (may have to do with the audio issue), regardless of CPU speed.
Hope this helps until this gets officially fixed somehow.

Hey, so as stated in the title, I have recently flashed Cyanogenmod7. Initially, version 7.2.0 and then the nightly build released on 10/7/12. I can no longer receive mobile data. I realize this is a very common problem and have searched through multiple forum posts here and elsewhere online. I also flashed a new kernel in an attempt to fix it (not sure of the name, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073626).
Mobile data will appear (and work) for the first 10-15 seconds after startup if wifi is disabled but then vanishes afterwards. I have tried changing the mobile network settings and apn settings in a number of ways but no method ever works (most of the ones found online appear to be at least a year old so perhaps I just need more modern entries). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The CM team has yet to fix this, and I doubt it ever will be fixed. It's present on all AOSP based ROMS. I guess if they set the modem to reset on bootup, it could fix it, but I have no idea how to do that.

I've also tried wiping the cache and dalvik cache with no effect. I have also installed a custom kernel with no effect. I am not entirely sure what you mean by fixing permissions.
Edit: searched and figured it out. Tried fixing permissions in combination with the other two options. Still no effect.
Sorry to bump an old topic but I accidentally reflashed Cyanogen (pressed wrong zip in recovery) and now it's working so if anyone else has this problem, try doing a factory reset and then reflashing old data.
