Quick question and answer time.
I looked at Motorola's site at the new ICS videos.. and the webtop 3.0 video shows the Droid RAZR, yes I know, different phone, but I saw where the video user plugged in an HDMI cable and the prompt came up for webtop and it was accessible. Without a dock. Now my question is do you think that the A2 will be able to access webtop 3.0 with HDMI without mods?
Thanks!

Just as the title suggest has anyone successfully attached a HD 2.5 drive to the TF using a USB coupler to the tablet? I have a Seagate Go Flex 500 gb 2.5 drive but since the tablet itself has no usb port to attach the HD I would need a USB coupler to connect the cables, would the tablet's proprietary cable supply power and even recognize the HD using a coupler?
Please advise.
Edit: Nevermind me... misread.
I don't think it will work.
There is a thread in general you could search for with a list of usb devices people have tried to use without the dock.

Yeah, just checked out that thread, doesn't look like any HD connected with a coupler works, I am not sure about the dock but I remember some guy on utube was able to via the dock. I am planning to get the dock after 2 years when the batt on the tab wanes, no big deal, would have been nice having an HD attached without said dock.
So I have read the posts where people have modified the Atrix 4G lapdock to be used with the Atrix 2. What I am wondering is if anyone has tried the same thing with the Atrix 4G HD Station? I have seen that these are going for about half of what the one for the Atrix 2 is being sold for.

my guess, and mind you this is just a guess. is that it would be a mess. My understanding is that the ports are reversed between the two phones, so the plugs need to be switched. this sounds easy, but my bet is that in the dock these ports are molded in hard plastic. i could be way off base, but i think you would need to buy micro hdmi and micro usb cables to splice into the dock

it's possible . some guys who are in asia posted that mod months before. What he said is to carefully open the case and very carefully remove the extra parts and then reverse the plug. It's not difficult but you have to be really careful.
Even after switching the connectors
Yeah, I have the Atrix 4G lapdock, and the Atrix 2. I switched the ports, and it still won't connect. I get the "Incompatible Device" error message on the phone. I get the webtop display for a second, and it disappears to the screen saver. Any suggestions?

The 4G lapdock works great with the Atrix 2. I use it everyday. It does come up with "Incompatible Device" but works just fine. It also works with the Droid Razr I can confirm. Read this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299498&page=4

4G lapdock wont work with my Atrix 2 as well. I flipped the ports but I get the webtop display for a second, and then it disappears to the screen saver.
What ROM are you using? Any other mods on your phone?
I'm having this same problem. Would love some help.

I had the same lapdock issue after reversing the ports. I only got it to work when I physically took the connectors out of the dock and inserted the into A2. It turns out the usb wasn't fully inserted, discovered by the mouse pad not responding and no charging I indicator on the battery icon.
I tried modifying an HD dock, but I broke it. I don't see how being careful helps.
Modifying the car dock is right out. The connector can't be reversed and the A2 is slightly bigger and won't fit. I did verify that the A2 goes into dock mode if you remove the connector and plug it in directly.
Hi, this my first post, I´m running AtrixperiaV4 now, and when I connect my phone over hdmi to my TV I can see the webtop interface but I can´t get the keyboard and trackpad on my phone display...I searched on the main Webtop thread, but I couldn´t find or interpret a solution, I´ll apreciate your help.
Thanks
Alessandro.
You'll need to plug in your own USB keyboard and mouse to your phone.
To do this , use an USB OTG (A male microUsb on one side and a female full sized Usb plug)
You'll also need a POWERED Usb Hub.
Hope this helps
Bluetooth works also.

Hi, I connected my keyboard and mouse with this method, but does not work, I used the OTG cable and powered hub and I saw in the display that it charge the battery , I've also tested with a "Y-USB cable" and the oem charger with a standard hub without luck, anyone can confirm if the atrix 2 Kernel supports USB-OTG ?
Thanks,
Sorry for the (very) late reply.
Since you are running a custom ROM, i'm not that sure whether the kernel supports USB OTG, but i'm absolutely sure that the stock rom ( both 2.3.6 and 4.0.4) supports USB OTG

Generally its a bad idea to try use your phone with phone specific features with a Generic-built rom (like CM).
In short, you want the atrix with atrix features, use a proper atrix rom.
I have an old Lapdoc that I used to use with my Droid Bionic. I loved the latest version of Webtop and thought this was one of the best things about having a Motorola smartphone. The news that Motorola is discontinuing Webtop got me wondering if there were a way of using the Lapdock with my SG3, perhaps in mirror-mode. Anyone tried to make this work or have any ideas on how to do so? For those unfamiliar with the various Lapdocks that are out there, they have a male micro-HDMI connector and a male micro-usb connector that attach to Motorola smartphones. The micro-usb provides power to the phone. Even for those who don't already have a Lapdock, now that they are being discontinued, they can be found dirt-cheap out there.
If I'm not mistaken it has nothing to do with hardware but is all software. So your answer is no.
I believe there may be some options. Between a USB OTG cable, and a number of adapters.
I've ordered one myself for another project and will let you know what I come up with - hopefully the hardware arrives within the next week or so.

I got a 50$ lapdock for the Atrix 4G. I'm currently using it with the newest Atrix HD LTE that didn't get the WEBTOP software.
BUT as the lapdock is nothing more than an HDMI monitor with a USB hub/keyboard/touchpad, The Atrix HD use it as if it is connected to an HDTV with a USB keyboard.
It work very well. Any phone with HDMI out and USB can use the Motorola Lapdock. Even my MK802 PC-on-a-stick is ok with the lapdock.
As an OTG laptop, the lapdock doesn't need to tether or anything else. And most modern cellphone with dualcore cpu are as fast if not faster than an Atom based Netbook.
...plus is it stylish and very thin and recharge your cell on the go.

have fun !
Hm...
So the MHL cable I have doesn't support USB OTG, in fact, I'm not sure that any do. I'll have to dig through this thread and see if anyone's figured it out yet.
The lapdock's connections are standard: microUSB and microHDMI, and it's working well for what I purchased it for... though it would be a lot of fun to hack something together to take advantage of the SGS3 with it.
I want to purchase a cheap phone for use as a media/gaming hub,I have my eyes set on a Droid x2 since im selling my atrix 2 and my droid 3 doesnt have sound over hdmi...
My plan is toload it with videos and emulators and roms and use my xbox controller to play games on my hd screen.
would this set up work? a phone that has an hdmi cord, usb to otg and a power cord plugged in at the same time?
I was just going to use the usb otg cord and a usb splitter, maybe a powered one.
I want to make sure before I buy the splitter and not waste any money.Im guessing if it works on a droid 3 or atrix 2 it should work on a droid x2,could be wrong.
Thanks.
