So I know it's been asked a few times but not with an airport extreme.
I have a 4g LTE phone (Galaxy Nexus) and I am paying a lot for my phone bill and my cable modem bill.
Has anyone tried this?
Galaxy Nexus ----> Airport Extreme Router -----> PC/Mac clients
If so how? I tried to do extend network but it wasn't able to be extended.
Thanks in advance.
Not really ... but what you can do is that get a wireless bridge and do It that way

Considering that AP is made by Apple, I think it's pretty safe to say in the words of bender "you're boned", but..
I run a Linux router on amd64 hardware as my fileserver/webserver/NAT/proxy/vpn "home office gateway extrodinare"... It has one interface going to a cable modem, and when that goes down (which luckily is almost never) I just grab a droid, plug it in via USB, tether, and switch the WAN interface to usb0, call the cable folks, and forget about it for a while. As openvpn is going to tunnel my traffic to a datacenter regardless, it's completely transparent -- Not like the path to the DC matters
Yes you can, depends on what flavor of android and what phone you have..

Does anyone have the G Tablet working on the Clear Network?
I know Clear is not in all areas yet so let me explain that Clear offers wireless internet and phone service on their 4G network. Here in Vegas we have both Clear 4G and Sprint 4G available. The Clear service is available for about $40.00 per month here and I am curious if this would work.
The Clear device is a USB port modem that would plug into the side of the G Tablet. Does this Clear device work with the G Tablet?
Also, Clear was selling a small hot spot device that can be used in place of a hot spot phone. I am not sure if that is still available. Do you think it would work with the G Tablet over wifi?
Also, does anybody know if the Sprint HTC EVO Hot Spot feature works well with the G Tablet? I think Sprint requires users to purchase their hot spot service and using a Sprint Phone as a theter violates their user agreement.
So, I am opening this up for discussion and not looking to try this right away, just looking for info for now. I hope this leads to a lot of discussion on the topic of wireless internet on the go. What made me wonder about this is I may have to sit in the hospital waiting room for several hours and it might be nice to take the tablet along to pass the time and I am doubtful there will be wifi service at the hospital.
Thanks for any response in advance.
ahhhh... Finally somthing I know a little about. I dont think the Tabs are gears for drivers for the clear cars, HOWEVER - I've had Clear since the day they came out, 2 usb sticks for $55 a month. Last month I upgraded one of the USB modems for the clearspot 4G, monthly service was the same price and now I have wiMax router that I can connect 8 devices to. IT WORKS GREAT. No reason to get a USB moden when you get the router for the same price
Hope that helped some?

Hi it2steve, are you using the G Tablet with the Clearspot? I talked to Clear Sales on the phone and the CSA said he thought the Modems would work with the Android Opp System. He also said that the Hot Spot device (Clearspot?) was either discontinued or was being discontinued. He said it works great for him (but he is one of those "Apple Guys") and he has it working with about 8 devices.
I was wondering the same thing.. Road Runner/Time Warner Cable recently put a similar device. It is said to be a 3G/4G mobile hot spot router. Their service is $39.99 for their local 3/4G service while the national(nationwide) service cost $39.99 for the first 3 months then reverts to $59.99 after that. Currently I have a rooted G1 with barnacle adhoc tether. Max DL is about 1.8 mbs on 3G and max upload speeds of .7 mbs. It is sufficient for browsing websites but not for watching flash ie YouTube(although some videos do play good and quickly). I'm using it ATM at work with max 12kbps DL and like 4kbps upload. Haha!
Hi,
HTC EVO4G hotspot works well with gtab. If you root your EVO you can either use wifi tether or with some roms use hotspot feature without having to pay the carrier any additional fees

I can second that. I use my G Tab with my rooted evo4G and wifitether and it works great!

Sprint is re-selling Clear's 4G service. I have a Sprint Overdrive 4G Mifi hotspot. Actually using it now because the cable modem in the house went dead. 5 devices can connect and use the hotspot at once. It's awesome.
Let me warn you. No one that I am aware of has been able to get any USB air card to work on a G-tablet yet. I know some devs are trying to get it to work, but if you want mobile internet on the G-tablet, you need to get a mifi or hotspot device.

Ok... I don't know anything about a recall. I do, however, know first hand which services that I have had with them the last year and a half:
- I started with two USB Clear 4G modems (NOT 4G+ which is 3 and 4G)
- 8 months ago I got the original 'ClearSpot Router' (which was an actual router, made my cradle point branded by Clear that a usb stick went into and broadcast the signal like any other router.
-45 days ago I upgraded one of my USB sticks to (now what they call) Clearspot 4G (not 4G+) as it's basically the same as the first one except it's all built into one unit. You set it up like you would any router, user / pass / SSID / encryption / ect.
It works flawlessly on my tab, laptop, Wii and even cell when I need it. As a backup I tether my Tab off of my Vibrant too.
Hope this helps some. I've included two pics, one of the first Clearspot with USB and one of the 'new' Clearspot where the USB is no longer needed (by the way, for the price and what you get the Clearspot makes it a no-brainer compared to a USB)
I have the 4G Clear Spot portable WiFi router (second picture above) and it works fine with the G tablet as with any other WiFi device. You can connect up to 5 devices at a time The WiFi signal is 802.11b/g.
Hey guys,
I'm going to try to make a long story short.
I have two routers in my home and decided to run the second one as a wireless repeater bride. Both routers run DD-wrt.
I successfully setup the second router as the repeater bridge and proved that it works by browsing wifi connected to this router with my Original Droid, Ipod touch, and laptop computer.
However my DC will not.
It will connect to the router, obtain an IP, and report that it's connected, however it cannot access the internet. Mac filtering is not enabled at all.
I was initially running Gummy 1.9RC2 GB with EP1Q, Then wiped and flashed Gummy 2.0 Froyo with EE4, both with the same results.
Any idea's guys?
It's probably confuzzled. I would set them as independent routers with different AP names and just have them both saved.

can't you connect to the main router is it n if so your signal should be good

That's what's so weird, it will still connect to the 1st router and browse...
How can all my other gadgets connect to either router and browse, yet my DC can't?
It's gotta be something on the DC, but I don't even know where to start on Android. LOL
that is wierd although I had a similar issue with the droid x3 it wouldnt connect to my home router which was n but connected to my work router which was b/g try forget network in the wifI settings then restart the router and try again

I should of mentioned, both routers are set for G only.

Not many routers support wrt, what equipment are you using? Airport devices? Hawking tech? Other? Reason I ask is, in my experience, apple equipment will perform this task the best.
It may sound odd but there can be a few things causing this problem.
What I would do first is connect the DC to the second router, then try to ping the router. There is a free app on the market to ping. If you can ping the router then you might have a dns issue, if you can't ping the router, then the second router is probably limiting the dhcp pool, on which you can log into the router and open this up.
If you MUST user a wireless repeater bridge, please test with a laptop instead of the phone to see if the problem is isolated.
If you need to boost wireless signal, I highly suggest getting a third router and setting it up as an AP and wire to the 2nd router (configured as client bridge) OR set up WDS. WDS is much better than wireless repeater mode, but setup is a bit trickier. There is a ton of help on WDS on the net. Wireless repeaters are problematic; I urge you not to use wireless repeater mode.
What kind of router is it? I had to return a new fancy dual channel N Netgear router due to compatability issues with some devices.
I have Brilliant Corners 1.3.1 and I have been reading about Ad-Hoc Wifi. I will be in the mountains in OCT. and Nov. and I will be using a 3G dongle with my wife's laptop and instead of buying a Mifi could I just connect to the laptop using Ad-Hoc Wifi? Is Ad-Hoc supplement already with Brilliant Corners or do I need to install the wpa_adhoc-signed.zip or wpa_supplicant.7z? If I do, how do I do it? Do I flash it like I would a regular ROM? I don't think I should be wiping anything though, should I? Do I have to use ADB to do this because I do not feel comfortable with it? Could I use Terminal Emulator?
Hi, you might want to look into:
http://www.connectify.me/
The full version of connectify might do the trick for you and it's priced at $19.99 now with a promo code.
Check the website.
I was just on vacation in Delaware recently and I used the free version on my wife's wired laptop and shared the internet connection with all the other laptops/tablets in the beach house.
Worked great!
The only drawback with the free version is that it will only work with a wired computer as the host. The paid version apparently lets you share a wireless signal ala' your wife's laptop with 3G dongle.
Good luck and have a great vacation!

I too am curious about this, but from here in the U.K. How does tethering to a phone compare, how to go about tethering?
Sorry mate, not trying to hijack your thread.

i wouldnt bother with a dongle. i am on t-mobile in the uk, have a samsung GS2 and use the portable hotspot functionality to use my 3G connection on my transformer when out and about. it so east to setup a child could do it and it works a treat.
if your phone has hotspot functionality use that instead. so much easier than a dongle and it means you arent paying twice for 3G connection.

I would have definately done this, but I sold my sgs2 to pay for my tf. Do you know of any other phone which can do this? Obviously cheapest is the key for me at the mo.

I unfortunately have one of the few windows phones that doesn't and wont (I don't think) support portable hotspot. Plus id rather not have to worry about another thing to charge.

i bought the extended battery from samsung, gives me 2 and half days of heavy useage out of one charge
eg i was using the hotspot functionality at work for about 3 hours today, phone went from 97% charged to 80% charged.
it works a treat for me.
Last I checked skype pretty much worked well enough to replace a phone
You can tether to a phone via WiFi just fine, but most people travelling internationally are not blessed. In ten days, if I try to roam, it will cost me $10 per megabyte. Also, it will burn through your phones battery faster (my old phone would die maybe 2x - 2.5x faster).
3G dongles, you should be able to preload with data when you get in country or preload with suitable data service before going abroad. That makes them useful.

3 do a 3g mifi dingle at 10gbp/more you can unlock it easily and put any 3g sum in it, works for me
I meant which brand/model is ts best value for money...
Unbranded phone= no roaming charges if you have an in country sim.I.e. I use my phone in Germany on a German sim. Its not rocket science

So no one can give me any recommendations?
An alternative approach
I don't know of a USB 3G modem that can be plugged in to the Transformer. I do have a sim-lock-free 3G Huawei K3520 modem (recognized as an E620 in GNU/Linux, and purportedly compatible with the E169). However I have not tried to get it to work with my Transformer (ie I have not plugged it in), so I can not say whether it works.
Instead I plug this USB 3G modem into a very small portable Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router that I own, and I use that to broadcast a local WAN that I log in with my Asus Transformer. I carry Edimax router around with me.
This Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router is both slightly smaller and SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than my Blackberry mobile phone, and it is easy to carry around. Why so ?
Because typically when I am outside, I have my Asus Tranformer inside my backback. Well the Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router and the 3G Huawei K3520 modem take up next to no additional space in the backpack, and their weight is insignificant compared to the Transformer and basic backpack weight.
By using the 3G Huawei K3520 modem and Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router combination, both my wife (with her iPod) and myself (with my Transformer) can access the Internet at the same time with one 3G account, saving money.
During one test, we had connected at the same time to this 3G Huawei K3520 modem and Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router combination:
Asus Transformer TF-101B
iPod Touch 3G
Lenovo X220 laptop
Dell Studio 1537 laptop
Blackberry Torch phone using its wireless
all sharing the same 3G connection. It would be a LOT more expensive to have to have a separate 3G account for each device.
I know this is not the answer you are looking for, and my apologies for that. But I think it worth considering on your part.
There's a thread about using dongles with the transformer but there's lots of compatible dongles, i don't want to have to go through the entire list finding which one is cheapest.

Guess I'll have to do that then
When they say you need a gtx600 or above and a wifi setup and that the streaming is local I assume we can run the pc through our router right? The connection doesn't have to be directly from the pc to the shield does it? I'd rather not have to buy a wireless card for my desktop.
Thats how I took it. They never mentioned needing a wifi card on your pc.
in general streaming uses specific paths within windows/pc and your router to get to other devices. normally just about anything network based is either/or. however it gets a lot more complicated when you are trying to share between more then one router. im pretty sure it will be both. but if one was to be restricted, i think it would be wired only, and wireless wouldn't work.

Only need to share a router. So unless you have some really crazy home network setup, it'll work.
Oh, and I believe the requirement is GTX 650 or above, not 600.
Guess I have some crazy LAN setup then, because I don't have a router.

If you're directly connecting all your machines straight to the internet with no NAT, that is a crazy (and fairly unsafe) network setup. These days, most internet providers have a built in router and often Wi-Fi access point in the device they provide you.

The DSL model is acting as a router (with NAT support), albeit a 2-port one (one on the DSL side, one on your network side). This is similar to my work setup.
