HTC One X Wifi issue is hardware, not software - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Didn't see this posted anywhere and the article doesn't seem to know if it limited to the international or the LTE HOX as well, but it seem the HTC is now acknowledging the the wifi issue is a hardware issue. Great...

It seems that this is a hardware issue not a software issue pointing towards a manufacturing problem. Some customers state that if the apply pressure to a certain spot on the HTC One X that their WiFi connection improves significantly. HTC is addressing the issue in their production plant and anyone that has this problem will be able to trade it in under warranty.

Here's an article from AC an hour later after speaking to someone from HTC:
http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-wifi-glitch-so-far-only-seen-tegra-3-one-x
Let's try to tone down the paranoia until more facts are revealed.

I picked up my HTC ONE XL in HK from the HTC shop unlocked and it has Wifi problems. Death grip problems too for wifi. If you hold the device from the bottom with your left hand with the left of the device in the palm of your hand (bottom half of the device) you will find Wifi dropping to pretty much no connection after.

Definitely don't have that problem. Are got sure mate.

[Q]Petition: Should HTC Re-issue a new design on the back cover?

After receiving my handset. all the death grip issues, losing wifi and some signal. I feel HTC Should redesign the back cover and send one out for each IMEI.
The backcover is flawed and atleast it all comes off. so replacing it should be no problem. The least they can do for a £500 phone.
how does everyone feel?
as we have a poll for the bootloader, why not have a poll for our deathgrip. after all bootloader is useless if the phone wont function correctly with deathgrip
It seems like the most direct way to address the problem, but I'm not sure that HTC are willing to take the hit on profit...
Yes they need to since this is clearly a hardware issue which couldnt just be solved with software updates.

Another problem riddle handset from HTC
Well they will simply deny first! (Already did I read somewhere)
Then they will acknowledge! (Very Soon)
Then will ship a rubber band to solve the problem!
They will not do back cover redesign, that cost money!
Remember HTC has many other model handset. even Evo 3D is now due.
Apple had only one model phone even then they refuse to redo.

All devices have some sort of grip issue depending how you hold them. Some people are saying they have no issues at all when on a call.
I voted NO.

Yes they do not have any issues with call as the death grip issue referred to here is not for call but for wifi and bluetooth issues.
Wow - death-grip wouldn't bother me in the least, at least it's better than the reboot-o-matic G2x ! I've been through FOUR of them now, each one of them has been a clinker!
I'll be more than happy to pick up a Sensation next week when they are available.
I have been saying this from Day 1.
The Sensations Design is inferior to previous phones designs... HTC will not do anything unfortunately.
I fear HTC is falling back into its old ways...

So what's the deal with the unresponsive screens?

Is this a hardware or software issue? It's pretty annoying. I can't scroll or type fast anymore because the screen can't keep up. If its a hardware issue I bet HTC will stay quiet about it, but if its software related I want it fixed ASAP. I absolutely can not use the phone like this.

I noticed this too, especially when typing.
I've never had any speed issues.... I text pretty fast and it's smooth as butter. Scrolling is especially great on mine....pages FLY up/down.
Just to let you know...that's not normal for the Sensation. It should be fast.... on properly working ones.... like mine
Do a factory reset AND a battery pull...if it still does it, there is a problem.
Make sure nothings slowing it down....bad app, launcher etc.
Love this phone...would never need anything faster
Good luck!

I wonder also is this a hardware or software issue? i really don't want to return mine device because i know how long i have to wait to repair it (i am sure the retailer will not exchange it for a new one because this is Bulgaria where i live).
Mine is with SN: HT 15EV, Taiwan made, Sharp LCD and i have the grounding issue- if the phone is not in my hand i cannot unlock it...
I want somebody to confirm if it's a hardware issue and to know what to do- return it or wait for a fix

So far everyone been returning it, just in case it is a hardware problem. BUT! The one i got replacement for, is still sitting at my home (they failed to pick it up twice now). Out of interest, i pulled it out, started it and guess what-no issue at all, no matter how hard i tried to replicate it. I have done factory reset before and it didn't help. but factory reset + keeping it turned off for a week seemed to eliminate the problem. So i sort of look like software problem, but why initial factory reset didn't help then?
Guys, I had this problem yesterday and here's some observations.
- I had this problem after a long charge about 9 hours.
- I couldn't unlock in normal way. I was able to unlock only if I slide that ring from its left side when I wasnt touching the phone. Might be dislocation problem.
- I've tried with a different lockscreen app(GoTo Lockscreen) this problem didn't occur.
- Pulled out the battery for a few minutes then put it back like HTC said. Didn't seem to solve the problem. Then I've deleted other launchers and rebooted. That seemed to solve.
Mine has gone to the HTC service centre in the UK, due to this issue. Will report back as to what they do.
My gut feeling says software. The reason I say this is I also own a Thunderbolt which is running a port of the Shooter RUU and it runs absolutely buttery smooth. The Thunderbolt has 768mb of RAM, same as ours, but is using the 2nd gen snapdragon chipset (single core). So certainly its a far weaker device hardware wise but can run Sense 3.0 flawlessly.
I just wrote an article about the issue. If you guys could share it around I'd really appreciate it.

Yeah, good article. I'm on day 4, so "it" hasn't hit, yet. 2 questions: is the EVO S-Off out of the box, and is the one you tested rooted? I would guess not. Hoping against hope that when we're rooted and can get rid of the damn bloat, things will be majorly different. Second, what real-world benefit does Gingerbread actually provide over FroYo? I had thought FroYo was somehow JIT-optimized, but that GB was from the get go and would solve all of the world's problems? Can anyone explain exactly what the benefit of GB is, and whether it can/will not be a benefit until root? TIA...

Also, as @gunnyman has pointed out, the LTE(XL, S4) variant's antenna contacts are in a completely different place.

Every WiFi device has a different antenna configuration and signal strength. You can't expect every device to behave exactly the same. More importantly than whether another device gets good signal, are the locations your One X is having trouble not very far from your WiFi router, and without a lot of solid objects between the router and your phone?
Its only a tegra 3 issueeeee
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I'm not convinced we all have the same issues....
So far i've found there to be 2 main problems with the WiFi.
1, Soft case depression,
2, bluetooth interference
(Very common, which plagues many other devices, Iphone & Ipad are all over Google with this issue, its to do with sharing the 2.4ghz frequency. flip off the bluetooth and the problem goes away.)
After testing I can confirm that i do not have the WiFi soft case depression problem, I reckon that's the sort of problem that could easily develop. You could create this issue by doing the very squeeze test suggested, crushing the contacts, laying them down as proposed is happening... don't accidentally sit on your phone!
The problem i and many have is the bluetooth interference preventing the WiFi from picking up signal and connecting, this is resolved by killing the BT.
I have been testing for 2 weeks, very disappointed with HTC. however the BT problem i have seems fixable with software, I think i have just solved my BT problem by swapping out the rom until i found one that works ok. I believe i have, and will keep testing.
It is certainly nice to have something in print from HTC, i'd like to see the guy in the shop try to squirm his way out off giving you guys your money back now!!

HTCpedia is not the official website of HTC, who the is Athanasios Zarkadas?. IN the about section for HTCpedia, they say the are just a group of people that like HTCs
i dont even know that this is an official HTC press release...
I followed the links.. its suggesting this is an HTC release, the basis for Pocketnow running the story is because they have visited XDA-developers and are quoting bunch of us!
the story makes this statement...
A statement from the company’s European division explains, “we have taken immediate steps to implement a solution in our production process to prevent this issue from happening in the future.”
Where's the official statement reference link??
There's been no recall, there's nothing from HTC to enforce your warranty in the store.
Maybe it gets released over the next few days, who knows. a little skeptical for now though.

dude so many of them did. I have so many iSheep friends who argued that there was no hardware problem.
I like Apple, they build quality hardware, but the degree to which Jobs utilized his Reality Distortion Field was obnoxious.
I sincerely hope it died with him.
Just spoke to HTC tech support over the phone. He didn't give me an exact date but he was very furious at AT&T because they're clearly the ones holding the software update for our phone back. He must have mentioned AT&T and "other players in the pot" atleast 5 times in our 20 minute conversation.
The best i got out of him "it's at the very end" and "just wait a few weeks".

So this is confusing, is HTC correct in telling you that a software release is coming to fix this, or is pocketnow correct by stating its hardware(Not confirm by anyone else except pocketnow)
We keep referring to this "WiFi issue" as one topic, but like I speculated earlier, there's 2 issues going on here, antenna conection which is hardware, & 2.4ghz frequency clash with blue tooth.
These are to unrelated problems.

[Q] HTC One S Home Screen Looping issue

Guys,
just bought an unlocked HTC One S.
works just fine however there is one problem. the home screen keeps looping between home screen and leap view when the phone goes on to the 2.5g signal.
if i leave the phone on 3g only then this problem doesnt occur at all. Obviously i cant leave it on 3g only coz then i dont have any reception at times.
spoke to HTC and was told that this a software issue and the phone needs to go for repairs for 10-15 days!!!
Does anyone here have an easier solution????
You could try a RUU for your carrier, this will flash radio, ROM, recovery etc, eg all software afaik. FYI it'll also wipe your sdcard.

Join the fight, make HTC fix the issue!
Hi everybody,
This issue has been reported to HTC by many users FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW, but no patch or update has been released yet as to address the problem. In order to make things happen, we have started a campaign through this link on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31606669
The idea is to post negative reviews on every major review website for this phone, because of this issue, and thus make the phone's rating drop to 0. Of course, HTC will be kept informed of our little campaign, which will go on until the patch is released. Let's see if that helps!
Join the effort and help us "motivate" HTC.
Thank you!

AT&T ONE-X WIFI Problems -- PLEASE HELP!!

I have an AT&T One-X running Viper 2.0 (mind you this issue has existed for me on various roms Cleanrom 5.0, CM10, etc and radio versions not just Viper). Anyhow I am unable to maintain a contant WIFI connection -- it connects and signal/strength are fine however it will drop after a few seconds to a few minutes every time on different access points.
I know there were reported hardware issues with the International version and I more so started to notice this as I am putting my phone on wifi more often to watch various streams from ustream and twitch.tv.
I have an IPAD and a laptop next to me both on the same access points and they don't drop out -- whatever is going on is not specific to the content I am viewing (it also happens when I try and watch content from HBOGO or Youtube).
I am really frustrated at this point and am really starting to wonder if its a hardware issue like the International version -- my biggest fear is I call AT&T for a replacement and get a un-rootable/lockable phone sent back and even then it might still be an issue with the phone its-self...
I would appreciate any help/insight regarding this issue because I am starting to wonder if I am better off just selling this phone and getting a SGS3 (which I really don't want to do unless I have to).

Have you tried using reserved DHCP IP addressing with your router? I was frustrated by similar issues with a mixed OS environment, but reserving specific IPs for each device fixed the problem for me.
Unfortunately I've got a non-rooted Evita, so have no experience with the WiFi radios in CM9/10 or AOSP.

Not the same issue. The WiFi antenna design on the international version is completely different from ours, and we don't suffer from the issue of the case flexing and making the antenna pins lose contact.
Its not to say you don't have a hardware issue. Just not the same one as the international version. People have had some random issues with WiFi on our version, but nothing as widespread as the international version.
Please keep all question related threads in the Q&A section only. Thank you.
