[Q] How update to 1.85 - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Im on 1.82 rooted/unlocked, but i wanna update to 1.85ruu so my question is, how can i update and keep my device rooted? I don't want to take any risk with the new 1.85 one click root...

You need to read more. This information is easily available in other threads. You don't need to use the one-click root to update to 1.85 if you already have bootloader unlock. Just relock bootloader, run RUU. Re-unlock, then install CWM and flash SuperSU from CWM. You will then be on 1.85 and rooted.

I'm sorry, i really am, but I'm still confused - flashing from 1.73

I've read and googled everything i can and I'm honestly still very confused and need the communities help!
Just got myself the one x with ROGERS, and yes I'm on stock rom 1.73
I'd like to flash a custom ROM...simple enough but the process seems confusing.
Here's what i understand i should do so far..
1. since I'm already locked (bootloader locked) i can just flash to 1.85 RUU..
2. Once i somehow find a way to do that...i need to unlock the bootloader from htcdev.com
Install CWM..by one click or maybe the adb method..
3. Or was it root first and then CWM...??
4. Install ROM..if you can figure out the instructions on that..
I need some serious help..the most detailed instructions possible...
Cheers and i appreciate all the help i can get.

Skip the first step. 1.85 is unrootable at the moment so if you try and flash using the 1.85 RUU you're screwing yourself over for the latter steps. Use the One-Click Root (search for tut) and root your device on the 1.73. Then you want to do the rest.
I belive you are mistaken. I from 1.73 root and bootloader unlock can be achieved. Then fastboot oem lock through command line, flash 1.85, unlock the bootloader again, and flash cwm. then you can flash superuser and you have root on 1.85. Right now if you want to flash custom roms 1.85 base is the only option. There are threads in the development section with tools and instructions on how to do this process.

You cannot unlock your bootloader though without your phone being rooted, and if you update to 1.85 you're stripping away your root privileges. Maybe I'm mistaken, but that's how I've understood it.
This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid... all this confusion...

You can't directly unlock or root 1.85 yet, the only way you can is if you already have a super-CID from before you upgraded. Follow the tutorial on how to do that, then unlock your bootloader using HTC Dev, then flash your recovery with ClockWorkMod, then install SuperUser using ClockWordMod. That's the only thing that will work to get you what you want on 1.85

That's exactly what I said. It is a roundabout way to root, but it is the only way. And it works.
He has a Rodgers phone so he can unlock the bootloader without needing to mod anything but i think he still needs to change the cid so that he can flash 1.85

[Q] Quick question for you HTC Vets

I've gotten totally accustomed to flashing on Samsung devices..
Currently have AT&T One X
- Rooted
- Bootloader Unlocked
- Running CleanRom 1.0
- Build Number 1.88.707.2
I'd like to get it back to just a rooted AT&T stock version so that I can make my own adjustments. I'm a bit confused as to the easiest way to do this.

Someone would have to make a rooted stock from. Unless you want to go back to 1.73 which you would get the bugs it had. If you did that would require a firmware downgrade. There is a thread in dev section. Have you tried updating to cleanrom 2.5.5 the most recent version with tons of fixes and such.

if you haven't flashed something else or found this already, this link is to a stock, CWM ready version of the 1.85.502.3 RUU. read the OP first, because this version is NOT rooted.
You presumably already have SuperCID if you have bootloader unlocked. All you have to do is:
1) Relock bootloader
2) Run whatever RUU you want
3) Unlock bootloader again
4) Install CWM
5) Root via One click for 1.73 or 1.82, or install SuperSU via CWM for 1.85.
The pre-rooted deodexed 1.85 version posted in the response above is also a good approach (install via CWM). But its not fully stock, as in its deodexed. But if you want to install mods, this is a good thing anyway, since many of them require deodex. You also don't need to mess with relocking and unlocking the BL again. But its not clear what you want to do, if you want to return to the original shipped 1.73 firmware or not.

Thanks,
Went this route and everything worked great. Now just need to flash the deodexed rom so I can make tweaks.

Question on roms?

I am running 1.73 and would like to try the clean 2.03 aosp romantic with sense. I know if I go to 1.85 I can't do it so my question is what do I need to do to be able to run that romantic on my phone?
I am already rooted.

There are a few how-to's here on the forum that have already been posted but I'll say it quickly..
Make sure your bootloader is unlocked and you have superCID
You can then download the new RUU and install it.. (will wipe your phone so back up, also download the leaked RUU from the dev section NOT the OTA)
Unlock bootloader again..
Now install your recovery of choice (CWM or TeamWin)
Push super SU to phone for root
Now install the ROM of your choice!
(I did this by quick memory so I might have summarized a bit)
And I will still have root? Does me being on 1.73 pose an issue?
Sent from my HTC One X
Yes. You will have root after flashing any of the custom ROM.
1. One click root to root your phone.
2. Unlock bootloader and supercid from htcdev.com
3. Install cmw or twrp
4. Flash any custom Rom with os ver 1.82 or 1.85
5. Flash radio 1.85 or 1.88 if needed.

New version of Android 4.0.4

Hello
My phone received an update to 4.0.4 number 2.15.401.100
My question is: will i lost my root when apply that update? For now i'm waiting with downloading.
It will not work on a rooted device. Try unrooting, install update and then re-root
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
relock bootloader and install stock ruu then update and root again
i think it will raise your hboot above .13 if it isn't already
that will make it more difficult on flashing custom roms/kernels/radios, if you do that
i don't think you need to install ruu, just stock recovery and relock. i have seen different posts on whether you need to do both. might want to research that. definitly backup phone and sdcard first to pc
this should be in Q&A also

How to update from 1.85 to 2.20?

I have my phone rooted since the first days of having it.
Never taken OTA update so it's still on 1.85 and it's unlocked but S-ON.
Has TWRP 2.4.3.0 and custom kernel and ROM.
Wanted to try some new roms that require new 2.20 and S-OFF.
Found a method to root 2.20 and get S-OFF, but my question now is how to safely upgrade from my existing condition 1.85/S-ON to 2.20?
Thanks
Why don't you just s-off, then RUU to 3.18, flash TWRP 2.3.3.1, downgrade touchscreen firmware, and then you can flash whatever you want.

Agree. Just S-off now, then run the 3.18 RUU.
If you are on 1.85, 2.20 is just an obsolete and unnecessary middle step, at this point.
Thanks to you both. Would you point me to see off procedure for 1.85?
Or it is the same as for 2. 20?
Thanks again

Soff is the same regardless of software version. There's a sticky in the original android development section.
