I'm sorry, i really am, but I'm still confused - flashing from 1.73 - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I've read and googled everything i can and I'm honestly still very confused and need the communities help!
Just got myself the one x with ROGERS, and yes I'm on stock rom 1.73
I'd like to flash a custom ROM...simple enough but the process seems confusing.
Here's what i understand i should do so far..
1. since I'm already locked (bootloader locked) i can just flash to 1.85 RUU..
2. Once i somehow find a way to do that...i need to unlock the bootloader from htcdev.com
Install CWM..by one click or maybe the adb method..
3. Or was it root first and then CWM...??
4. Install ROM..if you can figure out the instructions on that..
I need some serious help..the most detailed instructions possible...
Cheers and i appreciate all the help i can get.

Skip the first step. 1.85 is unrootable at the moment so if you try and flash using the 1.85 RUU you're screwing yourself over for the latter steps. Use the One-Click Root (search for tut) and root your device on the 1.73. Then you want to do the rest.

I belive you are mistaken. I from 1.73 root and bootloader unlock can be achieved. Then fastboot oem lock through command line, flash 1.85, unlock the bootloader again, and flash cwm. then you can flash superuser and you have root on 1.85. Right now if you want to flash custom roms 1.85 base is the only option. There are threads in the development section with tools and instructions on how to do this process.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

You cannot unlock your bootloader though without your phone being rooted, and if you update to 1.85 you're stripping away your root privileges. Maybe I'm mistaken, but that's how I've understood it.

This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid... all this confusion...

You can't directly unlock or root 1.85 yet, the only way you can is if you already have a super-CID from before you upgraded. Follow the tutorial on how to do that, then unlock your bootloader using HTC Dev, then flash your recovery with ClockWorkMod, then install SuperUser using ClockWordMod. That's the only thing that will work to get you what you want on 1.85

That's exactly what I said. It is a roundabout way to root, but it is the only way. And it works.

He has a Rodgers phone so he can unlock the bootloader without needing to mod anything but i think he still needs to change the cid so that he can flash 1.85

[Q] Possible to root on Sensation XE ICS

I am really a noob at rooting, though there are easy steps. However this confuses me. So if anyone can find a very good guide for rooting my Sensation XE running on ICS, that is noob-friendly.
EDIT: All I need to do is to downgrade my HBoot version to 1.17.xxxx - but I want to find the easiest way to do that.
EDIT2: I unlocked my phone's bootloader. Doesn't help with S-Off though. :/
I will have to wait for Revolutionary to update their tool so that my phone can S-Off (since my phone is 1.27.0000)
May I can downgrade my phone back to Gingerbread, but how? And it looks risky, will that can brick my phone?
I'll press the Thank button if your post is helpful enough.
I have found this to be a very useful guide with ICS https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KEQCpmcLGjbkeLmVU0mpLSwZvjNqLSAmNBqyKMus3Ag/edit?hl=en_US
You may also want to check youtube for the unlockr video tutorials, they typically refer back to xda, but will help if you need a visual reference.

Maybe you will try to use Unlock Bootloader from htcdev.com but I can't make sure because I already S-OFF before rooted. But if you find a way to S-OFF you may would like try method above which I use.
I hope you have been s-off before update because unrevoked won't support it right now. If it show LOCKED on bootloader, this is how I root my Sensation XE.
1. Unlocked the phone using htcdev.com account since no other's method seem possible right now. But if you device already unlock you do not have to do this.
Go to hTCDEV register, click "Unlock Bootloader" and follow the instruction.
2. Install custom recovery, since htc recovery won't flash/install flashble zip correctly. For this I use "Android Recovery Manager". Reboot the phone after unlocked process. Connect the phone with usb cable. Open the Android Recovery Manager > Start > ** Download a recovery ** > HTC Sensation > ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.0 (Pyramid) > follow the instruction on the software. If stuck when device reboot to flash hboot but not yet flash it because can recognised the FASTBOOT(Android Recovery Manager waiting for FASTBOOT). Take out battery, reconnect usb and boot to FASSBOOT.
3. Flash the supersu, as the Android Recovery Manager finish flash the ClockWorkMod you have to install Superuser-3.0.7-d-signed.zip. If fail retry flash 2-3 times, but I am just done 1 time, before on GB I flash two time because fail at 1st time. And now you rooted and reboot your phone.
Try at your own risk.
Summary :
Download Android Recovery Manager and Superuser-3.0.7-d-signed.zip, place the Superuser-3.0.7-d-signed.zip on sdcard. Unlock the phone on htcdev.com, install custom recovery with Android Recovery Manager and flash the supersuser.
* use Superuser version 3.0.7 because the lower version won't support ICS. Use link given and download the right version.
I am using this method on Sensation XE, so try at your own risk. I will not responsible to anything happen. And please do make sure you backup your device first.

I am on 1.73 rooted. I am not unlocked. There are so many different questions it is confusing. Hoping someone can help. Since I am only rooted on 1.73 can I just upgrade to 1.85 and then unlock and then root? Just that simple? All that lock re-lock downgrading upgrading yada yada. I think I just need to Ruu the 1.85 then unlock then root in that order. Would that be correct? Thank you for your help.

Correction, you need to root before you unlock, it's a prerequisite. Also, rooting 1.85 seems like a bit of a pain right now...You may be better off waiting for a one-click solution if you can.
Take a backup of your user data with the instructions in this thread. Then unlock (user data wiped), and relock in order to upgrade. Then install the 1.85 RUU (user data wiped again). Unlock again, use the same token (user data wiped yet again). Install CWM and then root through CWM. Finally, restore your user data according to the thread.
You'll be on 1.85, the latest, rooted and unlocked, with all your data, apps, and settings 100% intact.

Noob to htc here.. I previously owned a skyrocket before i made the switch to this beautiful phone, and i gotta say the skyrocket is a very noob friendly phone. All I had to do was root, get cwm, and flash roms. So you can imagine all this bootloader stuff is a bit overwhelming. Anyways, I would love to update to 1.85. but ive already rooted/unlocked bootloader. So now i must re-lock it to install 1.85? I've tried to moved to 1.85 three times now from 1.73 with no luck and the bit about re-locking my phone confuses me. Care to elaborate? I've tried searching a lot of the threads in the def section but dear lord those threads get long fast..

Haha, yeah samsungs are like that. I had a captivate and my parents have a skyrocket and a note. This phone's design beats everything by far.
Go into the folder where you downloaded your one click unlock, open a command prompt, put the phone into bootloader and type "fastboot oem lock" to relock. After you upgrade, do the same but type "fastboot flash unlocktoken (name of your unlock file)" to unlock again.

Nope, it is not necessary to unlock your bootloader to upgrade to 1.85. But if you plan to unlock it at all, you need to unlock it before upgrading because you cannot get root access on 1.85 without having CWM Recovery installed. The guy I replied to already unlocked his before upgrading so he needs to relock it to install 1.85
Okay I thought you had to be unlocked before uping to 1.85 because there is no root for now on 1.85 but if you have an unlocked boot then you can root through cwm..

[Q] Help please. Stuck: HTC One X, rooted, but not unlocked bootloader

Hello.
Surfed the forum for an entire week regarding rooting and unlocking the bootloader.
Its HTC One X, 4.0.3 ICS, on AT&T
Managed to root it using OneXRootOneClick method (onexroot.com)
Tried to backup through the fastboot method before flashing the ROM... and when I went to the fastboot screen, and clicked on Recovery, instead of giving options of recovering Vs backing up etc., the phone immediately just wiped everything and started clean slate.
Read in detail more, and realized there is no unlockable bootloader from htcdev.com (thanks effing AT&T!!). The only current method is the one posted recently on xda (by using the Hex editor and changing your ROMs code to think it's Rogers').
So now when i restart into fastboot, I see at the top the phone is 1-tampered 2-locked 3- S-ON .. (i restored all software and data and settings, and backed up everything on titanium afterward).
So... Questions
1. Beside achieving root access and SuperSU, what else can i do with a rooted android if I cant unlock it in order to flash it?
2. How do i get ClockWorkMod on so i can backup my ROM onto my SD? And is it doable if I cant unlock my bootloader?
3. What options are there from here? (a rooted but unlocked device without CWM) And do i need superCID , busybox etc?
There are one clicks for root, supervis/unlock, and cwm recovery, I just did it today easy. Linked the tools, was very easy.
Bootloader/supercid tool.

secondly... any mac version of the one click unlock ?
I was 1.73 it makes it easy since you need to be rooted.
I don't think there is a Mac version, you could also follow the non one clicks, or just use the commands from the one clicks, just rename the .bat file to .txt open it and copy and paste each command in adb.

The unlock method (either one click, or the hex edit) can only be performed on 1.73 and 1.82, since it requires root. If you RUU to 1.85, you will lose root, and no root method exists on 1.85 unless your bootloader is unlocked, so you are stuck without root. After you get SuperCID, you can update to 1.85, if you like, then install root using CWM.

CWM can only be installed with an unlocked bootloader. If your intent is just to backup the ROM itself, there is no need to. You can always flash the RUU to return to that version (but data wiped). And SuperCID should allow you to revert to older RUU versions, if you want to go back to 1.73. If you want to keep your data and settings, you can use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671746

You can root your device without downgrading. Unlock your bootloader on htcdev.com, install a custom recovery (over fastboot), flash supersu or superuser in recovery.
If you want to downgrade, you'll have to unlock on htcdev.com, root your phone like above, then use misc_version to change the version reported by your phone, relock the bootloader and run the older RUU.

Verizon HTC One M8 - Stock to GPE ROM

Can anyone refer me to a how to for how to go about flashing this rom on a 100% stock phone? Every guide I look at says before starting this you must s-off first, must root first, must unlock bootloader first which is confusing. Is there an all in one guide available for doing this?
With my GS3 it was much simpler, just unlock bootloader, flash recovery/root/ROM and go.

You need s-off because on Vzw HTC you can't unlock bootloader with s-on via htcdev cause Vzw blacklist it. So their for you need s-off to unlock thru there. If you use sunshine which is a app you run very simple that will s-off an unlock your bootloader then you can just flash a recovery an flash SuperSU for root an then flash any ROM you want.
