xoom ics - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi i live in australia and im getting the ics update on june the 21st ota because motorola australia are pieces of **** and i was just wondering is there any difference just general performace and gaming wise did nvidia update the drivers for gaming or no??? and what are the new feautures

Stock ICS is OK. However, custom ICS ROMS are much better, are much more optimized and have better customization options built into the ROMs.
As far as performance, I have never used stock ICS for longer than 10 minutes so I couldn't tell you.
As for features, just look around the dev section and you will find what you seek.

When I first got the OTA for ICS back in January, I was immediately going to flash a custom rom over it, but then I decided to see if there was a difference in general performance. When you get the update, everything becomes more responsive and transitions/animations are much smoother in my opinion. In terns of graphics for gaming, the Tegra 2 remains a Tegra 2. Things might run a tiny bit better, but don't expect ground-shattering results.
If you are looking for some serious improvement, use a custom rom like d3athsd00r said. Custom roms usually get rid of the bloat that Moto/Carrier puts on your xoom, and at the same time they make many performance improvements themselves. Just note that flashing a custom rom in almost all cases will void your warranty.
Hope that helps

Gingerbread confirmed coming to inspire

source is from engadget
DALLAS, July 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Key Facts
AT&T* confirmed that upgrades to the Android™ 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform are planned for all post-paid Android smartphones already introduced this year.
Motorola ATRIX™ 4G users will receive an update to Android 2.3 beginning today and HTC Inspire™ 4G users will receive the update in the coming weeks.
Motorola ATRIX 4G update will also provide the ability to download applications from third-party stores.
HTC Status™ arrived in stores July 17, the first AT&T smartphone running Android 2.3.
Upgrade Details
Customers who purchased an Android smartphone from AT&T introduced in 2011 can expect to receive an update to Android 2.3. All of these devices are planned to be upgraded from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, also referred to as Gingerbread. In addition, Samsung Captivate™ owners will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread.
Delivery methods will vary by device. Whenever possible, upgrades are delivered over-the-air (OTA), however in some cases the size of the file needed to install the update will require the user to connect via Wi-Fi or connect the phone to a PC to install the update. Factors such as manufacturer-defined software and other device performance improvements result in each device requiring a separate update which will vary in timing.
Beginning today and continuing over the next few weeks, Motorola ATRIX 4G users will be prompted to install the update. To download the update, users must be connected via Wi-Fi. In August, HTC Inspire 4G users will be notified that the update is available and can be downloaded when connected to a Wi-Fi network. AT&T smartphone users can access at any one of the company's more than 26,000 Wi-Fi hotspots at no cost.
The AT&T smartphones planned for a Gingerbread update are:
HTC Inspire™ 4G
LG Phoenix™
Motorola ATRIX™ 4G
Pantech Crossover™
Samsung Captivate™ 4G
Samsung Infuse™ 4G
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
Gingerbread delivers a number of improvements, such as user interface refinements, refined copy/paste functionality and speed enhancements. The upgrade offers improved power management that offers a more active role in managing applications in addition to an improved on-screen keyboard with multi-touch support that makes typing faster and more accurate
Yay. It's about time.
Whadya bet it's horrid like the latest OTA for the Craptivate? Even worse would be if it's unrootable.
Captivate 4G?
As a former user, it's nice to see it still being supported .
I guess it's cool for people who are afraid to root, but I would never even consider using that ota update. I'm sure most feel the same way since most popular roms have been on gingerbread for quite some time.

I am curious what version of sense it will have. If it has a version of 3.x I would try it.

It would be nice if it had Sense 3.0 but I don't really have very much faith in AT&T. My guess is it will still use Sense 2.1(?) like it does now.
It will have Sense 2.1. Sense 3.0 was not designed to be put on phones such as the Inspire. 3.0 is only being released on the newer models coming out such as the Sensation.

It looks like the latest GBs are rootable now with a tool called Fre3vo (originally made for the Evo). Hopefully HTC won't hold off on their release by trying to patch against this exploit.
Another pointless update from ATT that will most likely brick devices due to OTA being unstable at best. When they release the source for it then I will be happy but until then. Ill stick with custom roms as I know they work and we all know how well ATT roms work

i'm actually looking forward to the release. not so i can install the ota update, but so that the devs can harvest it for goodies (if any). In my experience, the ATT stock roms have almost always been the most stable, and roms built up from these with just a few tweaks to teh rom (ie inspired ace/saga) are golden for what i'm looking for. we'll see what happens i guess

+2. Once the devs get a hold of it, they can tweak and add Sense 3.0, which will give us more stable roms than the current Euro DHD roms.

Yes yes and YES! Right now Im running the TPC rom. No ATT bloat, OCed, a few more tweeks, etc. and its so damn stable I dont think I'll ever flash to another ROM. Im hoping for the same thing you are...a stock, but cooked, GB rom. Absolutely cant wait for this!
Yes I'm glad because its official and the Devs might find some use for it. But I have been using the famous cyanogenmod so the update isn't a big thing for me. Glad to see att hasn't forgotten us though!
I'm most excited for any radio and ril updates it might include since it will be a true AT&T certified GB based radio/ril combo.
I look forward to what the devs do with with it and hopefully some new drivers. Like touch screen, and wut not. I assume it will be nicer for a dev to use the framework from an official release that's for the inspire then the ones they have been using?
Hopefully we'll get new radio/ril designed for gingerbread. Wish I could use the latest ATT ota radio with ARHD! Looking forward to it.
My best estimate is that it'll pretty much be the same as the GB WWE and Telus ROMs we've already seen with some ATT bloat added in that'll be the first thing to get removed. It'll be easier to use as a base for Inspire custom ROMs though as there won't need to be audio fixes and gps stuff and whatnot.

That's the propaganda from HTC, but thanks to Capychimp it has been proven to run fine on the inspire.
So it would still be great if they shipped it with 3.0.

[Q] WIND Mobile LG G2X

Hey guys, I might be hopping over to the $29 monthly WIND Mobile plan pretty soon, so I'm looking at the handsets they have and I pretty much narrowed it down to the G2X and the Nexus S. I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 which is really similar to the Nexus S in terms of hardware, so I'm hoping that you folks could shed some light on some of the questions I have about WIND and the G2X
1. How are the custom ROMS for the G2X? I love being able to flash custom ROMS like MIUI and CM7, so I'm wondering if there are custom ROMS out there for the G2X that provides full functionality (ie. smooth video recording, etc)?
2. On my GT-I9000, 512 MB of RAM on 2.3.x Gingerbread seems to hinder the home screen smoothness and performance unless tweaks (scripts, LMK kernels, etc) are applied and even then, it's not always 100% smooth. Does the G2X suffer from the same issue?
3. Some of most impressive specs on paper for the G2X are the camera and the dual core processor, do they live up to the initial hype?
4. If anyone's has/had a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 (and used the custom ROM or stock ROM with lag fix), how does the G2X compare with the SGS?
5. Are there any phone-specific precautions I should keep in mind when rooting/flashing this phone (eg. bootloader locks, etc)?
I'd appreciate any advice/input from owners of the G2X, thanks!
To answer some of your questions..
1. Eaglesblood, latest cm7 nightlies using faux latest cm ds kernel are BOSS! I am using latest 2.3.7 eaglesblood rom and everything just works perfect! I have tried miui roms and they are great also(thanks whitehawx for all the ports)
2. Compared to the i9000 the g2x smokes it even tho it has the same ammount of ram, let me just say this... i have 600+ apps/games and dont experience any lag whatsoever! No scripts needed!
3. Yes!
5. Just make sure you install lg drivers/ apx drivers first, install CWM thru tgagunmans excellent nvflash guide(never thru rom manager since it's a fake flash) Then just flash a rooted rom thru recovery, or you can also oneclick root. G2x doesnt have a bootloader like htc devices(wish it did tho because it would make flashing radio/baseband soo much easier compared to using lg's crappy software/kdz method).
Also..
Since the nexus s already has ICS it might also be an attractive option but since it seems your wanting input on g2x, once cm9 is publicly released for our phones it will be an even more amazing device since it is the OS our G2x's should have started with from the beginning(hw acceleration, multicore support, improved ui,etc)

The camera software was changed in Gingerbread. There are a few options gone from the Froyo LG Cam. Also added more compression to the pics taken. Not as sharp and clear.
Wait until ICS is available fo the G2X then decide. If it's the G2X, buy a 2nd hand one, they,re a lot cheaper.
I love the phone but to be honest, the camera sucks ever since LG removed the new camera and the modded ones don't work the same. Not a problem for me though, I don't use it.

It wasn't too bad on Wind mobile. But it's a lot more enjoyable once I rooted and upgraded to Gingerbread on EaglesBlood rom.

[Q] So Everyone....Should I Buy The Optimus 3D After All?

hello everyone,
im planing on buying this phone the next two days...as i found a good deal on amazon(406$)
i want to buy it cuz the 3D videos(both shooting and Watching),and the 3D Games
also cuz it has Dual-Core(currently i have a motorola defy),and its GPU cuz i play HD games alot and i'd like them to be very smooth,
but now i don't know...its just many people say's the phone is not so good because of LG,and many people complaining about it....my only complaining about it that it doesn't have many roms cuz of the 3D framework(i guess)and its somewhat holding back the true performance of the phone(correct me if i am wrong)
i don't care about the ics...i just want my phone running gingerbread(ThiaiZ rom sound great...but i need arabic typing support...hopefully he'll accept my future request to add it ) stable and fast
also....if you guys do not recommend me to buy it...do you recommend anything else for the price tag....so far my only other options is the Atrix(which i like but i want 3D )and Optimus 2X
would really appreciate the help of the experts....really....cuz i don't want to buy a phone that i'll regret buying
finally(cuz i got only one opinion on this) in case i got Thrill 4G instead of the OPtimus 3D...can i use ThiaiZ rom....since i don't care about the 4G anyway cuz its not yet available in jordan[middle east])
Go for it man..recommend it..
ThiaZ Rom does support Arabic as well as all other Roms (LG adds arabic in all its firmwares, however, RTL support is just for Middle East versions).
LG's updates are good. Updates always brings something new. One update brought 3D game convertor, the other brought dolbey mobile, video stabilization, more bit rate in recording 3D videos, vivid color in pictures, enabling flash in 3D mode, enable shooting by 3D hard key, 21MB 3G speed, better battery life, smoothness, better RAM usage, and more. I mean, LG does a good job on updated. However, all other companies are faster than LG in updates. In addition, some updates bring some bugs with it. The current bug on GB update is the low bit rate in recording HD 2D videos and ghost calls problem (Appeared for few but not all).
For me, I bought this phone for 3D functionality. I don't regret buying it, and I am happy with it.

What a bunch of whiners. This is a great phone. It's incredibly fast, the 3D is actually an addition instead of a worthless feature, runs games smoothly (even most Tegra2 games) and it had plenty of official updates so far (in a few months I went from V10c to V10d, V10k, V21a GB and now V21b GB) that can be flashed officially or through other methods if updates aren't released in your part of the world yet.
Sure, there aren't a lot of custom roms, mostly because of the 3D framework, but hey, if it works as it should then why bother? From what I understand ThiaiZ does a great job with his roms.
I've had no ghost calls, missed text messages, reception is great and download speeds on HDSPA and Wifi are very good. The GB update made the phone very snappy, no lag at all. Battery life is great for me on the latest GB rom (I only charge every other day, sometimes even less)
Sure, there are problems, but there will always be users that have problems with any brand. When reading forums like this it seems like there are a lot of problems but other than asking general questions what's there to post about if your phone works great?

Got an unbranded new O3D last week, had the chance to selling it and buying something else, why didnt I ? Because phone is just amazing. 3D is just great. The only problem is LG updates delay, something very very bad but that I stop to care about every time I watch a movie, youtube video or play games in 3D. We put like this:
Hardware excelent
Software could be better
Updates we got many nice ones but I hate the delays.

Why do people complain about updates so much, if it's not broken what exactly do they need to update?
Amazing phone if you want 3D, highly recommended.

First and foremost I bought this O3D to use it as a phone, unless you live under a 3G tower this phone will not pick 3G just look at the pictures and see for your self both my phones are on Vodafone Australia.
so, if you want a 3D playing device go ahead an buy it, you want a real phone then stay away.

As I said, RTL is only available in Middle East versions, so the answer is no. If you want RTL support, you can flash v18a (First leaked GB 2.3.5), flash stock froyo v10D for middle east, or wait for official GB for middle east

can i flash the stock arabic froyo or early arabic gingerbread on a thrill 4G(you know...the us version)
most people here say you can flash optimus 3d roms on thrill but some few says no
If you are ok with long upgrade cycles, like the 3D feature and can cope with the fact that there are not so many actively developed roms, get the O3D.
Otherwise get something else. I think Galaxy S2 would be by far the most popular phone atm.

Sony vs ICS: is ICS heading to the same buggy fate as iOS 5

I wrote this after reading Sony's developer blog about the pros and cons of ICS and reflecting on my personal experience with several ICS ROMs on my Sensation. What I've come to realize is that ICS lacks the stability of GB and many things don't work. As Sony has pointed out, there is a huge structure difference between the 2 versions of Androids, and ICS is the more resource intensive one. Consistently, my battery on ICS is always poorer than on GB, including on idle. What really bugs me is that many basic functions such as video hardware acceleration malfunctions, my videos now become choppy and looks weird. If you manage to get your hands on a HTC One X, you can try watching a youtube HD 1080 mp4 on it and see how blurry the video rendering has become. At the same time, on ARHD ROM, there is the problem with wifi auto turning on, some sound problems as well.
All in all, this reminds me of the public outcry when iOS 5 was released and it was full of bugs. I am fully aware that ICS is a major update, thus bugs are inevitable, but I can't help feeling that ICS is not polished enough, or at least it needs some major public testing before officially released. I don't think there were as much problems of upgrading from Froyo to Gingerbread.
This is just my own opinion as an end user rather than someone with programming knowledge. I haven't managed to find any functions that is exclusive to ICS that GB lacks and I also don't see much value added by upgrading to ICS. Can I anyone enlighten me on this topic? What are the practical benefits of upgrading to ICS?

Face unlock is not really useful at all. I think most people will just stick with other methods like PIN lock instead.

I feel the exact same way as you about ics vs its predecessors... I currently use a optimus 2x handset and came from a se x10i. I always viewed sony as a bit behind the rest when it came to software/hardware releases, but after using the two handsets mentioned above, I now realise that se just spent a bit more time to release a better all round experience for their customers.
I have always run cm7 on them both and been happy, now ics is out I have been trying it out... and I am sadly very unhappy with it. I know that rom development takes time. so I used a friends stock nexus s for a few days, and its was even worse due to lack of root among other things. I will always stick with android, but at the moment ics is far from anything I would like to use.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you. You probably have to wait until CM9 becomes official.
hmmm, not sure about other phone makers. My experience with custom rom ics is good. Undeniable when I first flashed the early version of ICS custom rom, it gives me nightmare with many things not working. But after the great custom rom developer put their priceless efforts to solve the issues, it is quite stable for the latest build right now. Haven't face any frustrating issues using it during working days or weekends.
ics on evo is getting better and better as each day passes. it started out super buggy but getting stable. still prefer gb tho
I have no problem with but a few apps that aren't compatible which makes my tablet reboot.

I can't help feeling that ICS is not polished enough, or at least it needs some major public testing before officially released.
What are the practical benefits of upgrading to ICS?

pure ics runs fine. its fast, battery is good if not great, gb compared to the overall feeling and handling of it is a hackjob. its not about functions, of course gb can do everything that ics can, did you seriously think it'd do more? its still a phone after all and the hardware didn't change that much, but the sum is more than its parts and ics - for the first time on android - is what i would call a mature os. adoption is a nightmarish clusterfuck because manufacturers and providers alike are out there insisting to disfigure it, push fragmentation because they are lusting after revenue and your money. of course its slow now, full of bugs and looks like crap - what do you expect, they didnt simply write modular extensions as they've could, they made dead sure you won't be able to de-install it by cracking up the framework whatever the cost and stuffing their rotten bloat into the poor thing.
the practical benefits? if you own a nexus you'll experience a modern, sleek operating system that is definitively a step into the right direction. something that feels good, looks good and operates like putty in your hands. on every other system you are f****d. call it "ics" what they've dished out but you're fooling yourself. gb is probably better than that indeed. and if you're fed up with the good ole' fragmentation game all together simply do not buy sony, samsung, htc or whatever, buy nexus where android is allowed to be itself.

Personally, I can understand what you mean, but I still prefer HTC Sense to stock Android (including ICS) as there are many features that the Galaxy Nexus lacks (Internet-pass-through and text reflow in browser). Moreover, if I want pure ICS, I can just install a custom ROM on my Sensation. I will be installing custom ROM anyway, so fragmentation is not my problem as well. My bug with ICS is this: ICS is specifically optimized for TI OMAP 4 (which is the worst SOC I can think of for my phone compared to Snapdragon S3 or Samsung Exynos) and currently all of my devices running ICS (HTC Sensation, HTC One X, ASUS Transformer Prime) have video rendering problem when hardware acceleration is on (either the videos become choppy (snapdragon S3) or blurry (Tegra 3)). No other version of Android I have used has this many problems when it was launched.

development dead?

now, i understand that development takes time, but given the potential of this tablet, i am somewhat dissapointed. i haven't really seen much progress past getting root, unlock, a recovery, a few roms based on stock, and one guy trying to port cm10. i guess what we are waiting for is the official jellybean upgrade before development picks up.

I feel you buddy, I'm coming from the Epic Touch forum that is very active in the development area. I too am disappointed with the lack of devs and ROMs for this tablet, but you have to realize its still fairly new and pretty expensive. I imagine most tablet devs would gravitate toward the Nexus 7 instead. Give it some time though, more will come.

yeah, and they released this iteration way too soon (<6 months i think) for devs to leave their primes
I think a lot of the devs have sent theirs back. I'm kind of wishing I had with mine. Pretty disappointed with the device so far.
One of the AOKP devs is working on a port to the tf700, and judging by his twitter the only major things holding him back from a release are issues with Bluetooth and some visual glitches. Once we have that, roms should follow since we'll have a working AOSP base.
His twitter account is here:

Actually to me, having custom ROMS on tablets is a little overrated. Root I can understand but seeing as I have owned the Xoom, Prime, and new the Infinity, must of the ROMS I have played with didn't add that much to the experience that stock already had. Outside of being able to use Sixaxis app, I have had little interest in rooting this Infinity. I think the wait for Jellybean is going to be with it.
Add in the fact that people are doing this on their free time, taking time away from their families, waiting a little bit won't hurt too bad.

and if you were in the e4gt forums from the beginning you will remember that it took several months for anything worth while to show up and how long for stable cm9? it took that forum quite a while to really get going.

Well to each their own, but to me, it's in custom development that you really begin to use the device to it's full potential. For instance, the OG Xoom has been literally given new life with EOS Jellybean builds. Yes, the Xoom wifi did get the JB OTA update, but stock JB is nowhere near as great as the EOS nightlies. They have tweaked it to capacity. The same will happen with the TF700 in time, I hope.
I also have the Nexus 7 and it's true that development has exploded for it, but honestly, it's a really limited device. For that reason, devs are in a performance competition...pushing things to the max. The TF700 though needs to be able to work really well...we'll need to be able to find the balance between high performance and stability. The fact that it's not really skinned is in its favor. It's not a Nexus device though and so some devs will not be interested in working with it.
Part of the problem in developing custom roms - which I have been doing for the Galaxy S 2/3 - is that currently you cannot decompile/recompile the SystemUI.apk file for the TF700T. XDA user iBotPeaches has taken over development of the apktool (tool to decompile/recompile APKs) project and is aware of the problem I and others are having. He is working to fix it.
As soon as it is fixed, I will be releasing a custom rom for the TF700T, but I need to make changes to the SystemUI.apk file. I can decompile/recompile the framework-res.apk file (have added CRT OFF effect already - and it works better than on my Galaxy S3).
So please have a little patience while the development tools are fixed and improved.
One other point to consider is that the Jelly Bean update is right around the corner, so putting much effort into modifying the current ICS version or actually making Jelly Bean work on the tablet is a waste of time.
