[Q] Where to go from here? - General Questions and Answers

Hello all on XDA! i'm brand new and shiny to the world of rooting, though i do have programming experience. I tried to root my Mytouch slide 3G but alas i never could get her to work right.
but yesturday i picked up a new ONE S and MY GOD i have never seen this much bloat !!!! a disney game?!?!? really?! well that wouldn't do so i jumped on here and took a swing at rooting again, with success!!!
i followed Torxx's method at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427
step by step took less then an hour from start to finish
so now i have all this TMO crap removed and a phone that works properly and i'm kinda at a loss.... what do i do from here? i want to contribute to the community but i'm about as wet behind the ears as you can get.
thanks for reading, i know it's long but hell i'm so excited to have a smart phone that is just that for once.... smart

Well after root, there's always custom roms, recoveries, kernels, mods that you could try...
If you wanna stay here for long, the I'd advise you to try and UNDERSTAND how the mods/stuff work in the way you do...(rather than just flashing stuff blindly, like how a lot of people now do)
Once you get an idea of the procedure of how stuff works, who knows, maybe, one day you'll apply for the title of recognized developer
Best of luck!

Just rooted

I know I know...... Well I just rooted using Revolutionary and during the process I was following I noticed that it never let me say yes to clockwork recovery. I have root access I did check that. Now I downloaded the Rom manager and it says I need to flash the clockwork to flash a rom. Should I flash it there or unroot with Revolutionary and try rooting again?

hello and welcome. i would engage you in a different language, but considering you typed in english, i will stick with english. moving a long... we are a very family oriented community and greatly enjoy helping new comers find their way around and answer questions they may have. you are more then welcome to ask a question whenever you like and even if it's something that may seem silly... don't worry, it is always our pleasure to help.
now, to get right to it. you asked about the installation of clockworkmod recovery. excellent! to answer your question, you can indeed install it through rom manager. you will find rom manager to be most helpful to you. a top choice application! so that being said, it is not necessary to repeat your previous steps.
I hope you found this response enlightening and of course, helpful as I like to say. feel free to ask a question again(soon!)

Your laying on the scarasm pretty thick, LOL. You can flash a custom CWM in hboot, Google is your friend it is also in development section. If you didn't do about a week of reading and research before you did this better catch on on reading now we like to answer harder questions not the same just rooted ones each day. Ones that can be searched for. I just rooted Droid inc and Droid inc 2 in last two days and both require different older methods with downgrades before root and s-off and I didnt ask for any help. Hell the ADB method for thunderbolt needed a downgrade and upgrade....Search, read, read, and read again before you do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179386
There is thread for CWM to flash in hboot.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
To put it simply... Yes just flash it through rom manager. It will ask for suoeruser access rights. Just hit allow and then let it do its thing.

In regards to this post - there are others of us here that actually do like helping out new people. I for one don't care how many time "the new guy" asks the same old question. The reason I feel that way is bc I also have questions that need answering.
So try not to be discouraged by the way some people respond to you. It can be disheartening - but there are some great and helpful people on XDA.

Oh trust me I still run into my brick walls around here, but to answer the same I got this phone how do I root it, everyday would be like writing up a nice q&a for new people to follow. Wait there is one and no one follows it. I will leave those questions up to you, and i did help him by showing him how to flash recovery in hboot which is way more educational than using Rom manager. I was new here too not long ago less than a few months but you have to read, jump in, I read for a month about rooting, radios, flashing, what could happen before I rooted....people who just root and come expecting someone to show them how to do everything.....yea you can keep that.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
Thanks for all your information no matter how many times you guys have to answer them. I have read up on rooting long before I did root. I was one of those people that waited patiently for HTC or Big Red to improve these devices. To my misery and 3 phones latter I decided to root. Now for my next question if you guys don't mind..... Lol. Once I flash a rom from rom manager or from a downloaded, is it just that simple to flash another rom or are there certain steps? One more.... How do I go back to my original setup if I wanted to? Again thank you for all of your help.

The RULES state you search before posting a repetitive thread. It wastes space and makes searching for an answer more of a pain in the ass. That said, I'm going to point that out to every new guy and kindly ask laziness be checked at the sign-in.
Keep the simple questions coming
The thread police are out in full force again. Keeping asking questions. Keep posting new threads if you have to. These ball breaking jaggs are just as guilty but feel like they are of some significant importance here because in real life they are invisible to the world. It's pretty sad when you think about it.

I don't beg for anything, its part of my signiture, it a reminder that while people always say thanks for the help more than 50% of the time never hit the thank you button. Once again another person saying something in a forum having nothing at all to do with the subject, I guess that is how you feel important agreeing with another newbie.
Edit: nvm I just read some of your past post, now that made me laugh you never helped anyone. Your post are made up of one liners and "why did you".....followed by something not helpful to OP or thread. Thanks for the laugh.

Do me a favor and read every one of my posts. It's not exactly a procession of mindless, impulsive questions that are repeats of something posted 25 times before. In fact, the posts that are repetitive are the posts that answer the SAME questions over and over again! I think we're all entitled to point out stupid and lazy when we see it, as well as the FACT searching the threads before posting is a RULE (not optional). When you're too stupid or too lazy or too self-important to follow rules, expect the rudeness you get. My thread is the PERFECT place for "stupid" questions and it's monitored by myself and a few others quite regularly. If you post a question there, it gets answered FAST and politely. I'm not doing this as a favor to myself. I'm doing it as a favor to the community. Maybe you should try contributing something more than encouragement of stupid.
However you feel justifying berating someone from the comfort and security behind your keyboard. The rules also say to respect other members of the community but you ignore the rules that you don't feel apply to you. Your hypocritical behavior is hilarious. You could easily answer (or not answer) a question that you feel is redundant without hammering the crap out of someone who is most likely new and not try and make them feel like an idiot for asking.
You can hammer away at me all you want because I know the source of the comments are from a person who is of no significance to me. But there are other new members of the forums who might feel slighted by your behavior and not feel comfortable interacting on the forums after they have been slammed by a self righteous jerk who has to build himself up in his alternative virtual world because the real world is too real for him.
I'm sure you will have an idiotic response to this because you can't go on without having the last word and can't just let it go. Regardless, after the response I'm sure you will have, I will not respond to show that a person can move on and not have to continue to respond to the idiotic rants of a self absorbed person living behind a keyboard just so they can have the last word.
I encourage all new persons to the forum to feel free to continue to ask questions and participate while ignoring those that feel they have to make you feel dumb.

What I don't understand is people like you encourage new people to break the rules, clutter the threads or start unnecessary ones while you yourself do not bother to try to help these people either. Look at my posts and tell me I don't try to help people with REAL problems I have not seen posted.....please point out I am being a jerk to every new person that comes on. Read up and you need to step up to help these new people questions don't leave it up to everyone else to answer if you are telling them to keep asking the same questions over and over.

ICS for Galaxy S 4G?

If this isn't a dev posting a working and bootable ICS for SGS4G then does this topic belong here? This been posted about a billion times in the right section of the SGS4G forum mind you. Use search function, post in old decrepit post about ICS, but please don't hog up the development section with this garbage. Important stuff belongs here like the roms that the devs here work so hard on only to be under appreciated by a bunch of sniveling children who didn't get their beloved CM7. Yes ICS got unwittingly dropped by the ever so greedy and scrooge like Samsung, who against Google's Open Handset Alliance, which promises a device would be supported for 18 months, has decided they are going to drop all galaxy devices period rather than provide official ICS. If you'd really like ICS then you'd best start donating. Money is tight for me right now but I know when my cash flow picks up my green backs are going to start moving in this direction.
You know what I've come to understand? A new user won't know how the regular users will want the forum to run. I made the same mistake myself and had a few threads moved out of the dev section. It's a dev question, so it could properly fit in the dev board.
You're just bumping the thread needlessly. Next time do what I did and just post a link to where the topic was discussed instead of ranting about how it's in the wrong section. Just report the thread and have one of the mods move it. It's much easier than having to take time out of your day to type up a long post talking about how pissed off you are about it.
Merry xmas everyone!

Brief synopsis on basic rules and how to help the community

Hey everyone!
I have seen some things lately that really are bugging me, and I am hoping that we can fix this fast.
1) If you have a question and you want to post, please do a search in this forum first BEFORE you post!
2) Please EVERYONE, even if you have over a thousand posts and many thanks, READ THE RULES:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=1058
3) If you do a search and find something close enough to your problem, but not quite the same, then please try posting in that thread first and not create another new one.
4) STOP posting and asking about ICS twice a day in a new thread every time.
5) If you ask a question and several people give an answer, attempt it, before you jump back and tell them that thier answer is not what you are looking for. I have seen this all too much lately, and I am getting fed up. Those of us on here that have the knowledge and we give our time freely on here, so show some respect.
6) Don't hijack someone else's thread because there are a lot of people looking at it, and not the one that you posted. This shows a lack of respect to all of us here.
There have been a TON of these things going on in here, and I have seen how many of our more senior users are getting very frustrated just like I am. If you want to keep getting good answers from the knowledgeable people in here, do some research first on your own before making a new post with incorrect information, and please listen and try to think about these things once you are given an answer, and don't just throw it out because it is not what you expected to get.
Also Please thank anyone who gives you an answer to you, even if you don't like it. And stop posting thank you posts, that is what the the thanks button is for.
One last thing, I think everyone should watch this video and hopefully you will get the point. This one is more for people with less than 50 posts, and little contribution.

Well said Jim, as always. We have got to get this under control, and hopefully this will help. It's appreciated sir.

Jim,
Thanks for taking the time to write this up. Hopefully, things will change. Did I miss something, though? I mean, was there a massive solar flare within the last couple of days thats caused people's brains to get fried? Noobs and members arguing, acting passive aggressively, disrespectfully, and stubbornly when other members or senior members try to steer them in the right direction? The whole attitude of this forum lately has become argumentative and hostile, albeit some of that stems from member's and senior member's frustrations with others not wanting to take a few minutes and a few simple steps in finding out answers on their own before muddying up the forum with new threads on previously discussed topics. It really needs to be stopped, and at the risk of sounding like a total prick, I may start reporting members who fail to adhere to the forum's rules and request a 24 hour suspension if I keep seeing it. We're all grown folk here, we need to act it by respecting others, and playing by the rules...
(Rant over)

I've been meaning to do this, but I knew it would cause me to go on a rant. Nice post, it should be stickied
Most of us are too lazy to go through the rules, but this is to the point, this should be stickied and even then someone posts a silly question, it should be simply ignored.

ROFLMAO..... I actually was crying a little I laughed so hard.... thanks!
I was hoping the title would get some attention.
P.S. anyone that wants this to be a sticky please notify a mod.... I would, but it is my post, so that is kind of a no-no...
So can I flash ICS from China leak to my att atrix 2 LOL HAHA ..... +1 Thanks Jim well put.....
Jim, this is quite nice & I really appreciate when senior members respect Forum Rules by Mike - 2.1 & 2.5 & 10 besides the core stuff of course....I guess if someone is a repeat offender then yeah it would be no fun, Au contraire (i guess i don't get pulled up for using french) it would really make anyone who is not technically adept as Senior members think twice before even wanting to write in, in-spite after doing a search but has a different view or a question. In this case if majority of the members who yet feel the thread or post needs to be closed then yeah I guess MOD needs to be notified. I recall how you gave me some pointers on a much talked about topic & oh yes having a way of words surely helps all concerned.
Jim, I thought it was a shame yesterday when you were working so hard to bring us ICS and some guy called you an A-hole because he felt you should personally walk him through an install. It seems like more and more people think they are special/entitled.

I know we have one for Defy (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Motorola_Defy). Would be glad if we could have the same for Atrix 2.
Please let me know if there is already a page. I have searched but couldn't find it.

I wanted to start out by saying hello all and thanks.

I just got a SGH-T959V 4 days ago, and since then, I rooted, unlocked (carrier locked to T-Mobile of course) so I can use it on my carrier, flashed the sms-T959V-KJ6-v0.1.0-unsigned-update.zip kernel, and just finished flashing VB onto it. All thanks to the wealth of knowledge available here on the xda forums. I've read countless threads, and posts from knowledgeable members and developers regarding any possible problems, forms of recovery from everything from bricks to cache and even EFS/IMEI related issues. I just wanted to take this time to introduce myself to the forums formally, and to thank everyone's efforts in bringing out the potential in not only this device, but all devices included on the forums. I am grateful that we have such a community with so much assistance and feedback available.

I am glad to be here. As someone who has been in IT for a while now, I understand how frustrating it can be to explain the same process over and over. I just wanted to make sure that I was properly educated on the device, the roms, kernels, modems, and troubleshooting. I always prefer to try and figure it out on my own. I like to think I learn more that way . Plus it prevents me from adding unnecessary posts to the forums that bog down important threads in Q&A, Dev, and generally annoy the people who spend countless hours bringing the releases to us.

[Q] New to android development

Hey guys, this is my first post on the forum.
I checked some other threads to make sure they don't have the exact criteria that i'm posting and
couldn't find anything, so to the mods, i'm sorry if this has already been discussed.
Please notify me and I will re-route to the correct thread.
I've had an htc aria(liberty, gratia) for the past two years and I rooted it and flashed cyanogenmod but that was the extent of my knowledge.
I've now switched carriers to Sprint and am running a MotoPhoton Q 4g Lte(rooted and custom recovery).
The reason for this post is I've noticed what seems to be a general lack of developers for this device (partially because the stock rom is very efficient), but I would like to start contributing.
I've got plenty of free time and would consider myself generally competent, and i've browsed the android developer's site for app building.
The question I present to the community (particularly developers) is how did you learn the system and get to where you are? What tools did you find easiest to use that also helped you learn the essentials? I would particularly like to develop roms and platforms, but would it be best to start with apps?
I hope my questions were clear and correctly placed, thanks in advance for any replies!
EDIT: this should be in Q&A
Moved. At least you realised where it should be so happy to help
Thanks
AvRS
Google has a nice training center for sdk & dev, might be a good starting point.
