Is there a virtual OS software like vmware to install on phone or a computer running phone emulator? This way I could try out ROM's without f'ing up my phone. I give props to some XDA members cuz they have balls of steel flipping from rom to rom. I like to tinker with phone but prefer the odds to be in my favor.

The best part of having a rooted android is trying everything... Keep in mind as long as you read the instructions you'll be fine and if that fails odin is also a samsung phones savior
CM9 Skyrocket
As far as custom rom emulation no and the reason for that is because there are just too many phones out there with different hardware, file systems, partition tables, etc etc, so to emulate how the rom would work you must emulate the hardware specs its really not a simple task. Unfortunately the only way is to flash and learn lol

One of my fav things about Android is trying different roms.
Best rules to follow when flashing:
-do a nandroid backup
-make sure ROM is for your phone type.
-read install directions (I try to read most of the posts in the ROM thread too)
Follow these directions and worst case scenario... If you don't like the ROM restore your nandroid backup.

It can be done nrm. The reason isn't the difficulty of producing but the difficulty of maintaining, hosting and being responsible for such a system.

Read the instructions on the rom you are flashing. Most times you use Clockworkmod Recovery i don't know if you go to clockworkmod with 3 button combo on galaxy S3 but yeah

If you want a kernel you have to use certain recoveries. So you can use kexec. There's more on that in original development.

Get ez-recovery, makes flashing different recoveries super easy. After flashing rom and setting up, go back to recovery and flash the kernal. That's what I did on synergy and imo's kernal. Beans v5 flashes it all at once. So far both run great with very good battery life.

Oh ok. So I just flash Rom then I'm good. On rezound you had to flash Rom, then the boot img. So it was two processes which is why I ask

Yup. You should give imo's kernal a shot, works great. Its a 2 step on synergy, but still no problem. Just passed my rezound down to the wife. And of course as soon as I did, seems like new roms started crawling out of the woodwork. I put viper res on it, now she wont let me try out any of the others, no fun.

If you flash any CM10 based ROM's you will have to do some extra steps. IMO you should just start off with Touch Wiz based ROMS so all you need to do is flash from your SD once and reboot.
This is a better place to talk about it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709There is also LOTS of "HOW TO" stuff there that should get you going.

It's not that simple. You are right about the kernel though.
I know on my s3 it's called initrd.gz or something like that then you need to use a tool to convert that to an actual image, or using the same tool, convert your already created image into the initrd format then put back into the kernel.
I'm not sure how the transformer kernel is I haven't had time to tear it apart.

Hi,
Somebody else asked this question just recently.
I have done this on my Sony Xperia Mini-Pro (SK17i). I added my XDA avatar to the boot screeen prior to the bootanimation.. It replaced the Sony logo.
I spent hours over a period of 3 weeks trying to get it to work (I should have given up as I did not know what I was doing and just wanted it to work). I was doing this on a windows7 machine which added to my confusion with what to do.
The Sony SK17i is almost unbrickable. I lost count of the times I flashed re-flashed bootlooped and generally stuffed it up. From my hours of reading forum post after forum post there was 1 thing that stood out for me. If the image you create to replace the boot logo is too big (bigger than the 1 you are replacing) it will overwrite some important stuff (I did say I had no idea what I was doing..well almost none)...this will result in a bricked tablet. In my case that was one thing I made sure of, that the image I was replacing was not bigger than the original (I mean the file size), from what I understood there would have been no going back even for my phone. (I think it may overwrite memory in the phone?)
Here is a link that I found referring to this process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477845
Please note this link is for Linux... I did this from Windows 7 which was a serious pain in the ass ! There is another link in that thread that refers to a thread by DooMLoRD about replacing the logo.rle file which may enlighten you further.
When someone else asked about this recently I warned against touching this unless he was 300% sure he knew what he was doing or had some disposable cash for a new tablet when it got bricked. There are so many threads with people bricking the tf300t it's not something I would risk doing. If your a bit more experienced with the tf300t then happy reading I'd be inclined to re-read everything you can find a few times over
The info about not touching it unless you are 300% sure you know what you are doing is the best advice I've seen all day and I couldn't agree more.
As you can see by many of the threads in here, it doesnt take much to brick this device. Unless you know what you are doing, leave the kernel alone. The tf300t would be an expensive paper weight.

Is it possible to install a mod directly into a ROM through the computer instead of flashing the mod on the device? If not, flashing the mod thru the device, would I pull that ROM off the device w/ the flashed mod installed?
I just wanna make my own tweaks to stock VRBLK3.
PS, would love any personal lvl help from dev's if they're willing
I haven't used the option, but cwm has an option for side loading. A buddy of mine has used it once and it worked great except for the fact that he said it was very slow compared to having the zip on the phone and flashing it that way.
