TF101 Space Error - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heya all,
I've been searching for over an hour now and haven't found a response, so please forgive me and direct me to the appropriate thread if one exists. Here's my problem. When I went to bed last night, my TF101 was fine. No errors, running smooth, no problems. Plugged into the dock, and I put it on the charger, as I do every single other night, before I went to sleep. This morning, however, it's as if a band of demons has run amok in my TF101. I'm lagging all over the place, crashing, freezing- you name it, it's happened, short of the device fully erasing itself (I backed everything up a bit ago, just in case). NOTHING has changed. I've managed to resolve all the problems short of this one: I'm getting (and appear to be) damn near out of space in my app memory. I have the 32gig model, rooted, stock rom but Guevor's kernel v22.1, OC to 1404 per SetCPU default profiles. No app updates have installed, and no new apps have been installed, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how in the world I suddenly have no space left when last night I still had over half my memory empty in this device. I'm not a major Linux person, but am capable of following clear directions for troubleshooting, and any help is welcome.
Thanks in advance folks!

(edited because I can't spell for crap this morning)

Your transformer may in fact have been possessed by a demonic horde. I recommend you factory reset in CWM (wiping cache and dalvik-cache as well) reinstall your ROM and have a priest perform a proper exorcism on the device. See if that helps.

Damn. Thanks for the reply, Thing. I think this is one of those cases where one seeks advice because even though they know the answer, they don't want it to be true. I was really hoping to manage this without having to reset. As ridiculous as this will sound (because it is ridiculous), I don't want to lose all the work and progress I've made on my Sims Freeplay game. I've got MyBackup Pro, but that doesn't seem to play well with SU, as I just get the "SuperUser has been granted access" or whatever it says when it tries to run, and it's never backed up the app quite like that before, the full progress. It only re-installs the .pkg file. I wonder if Titanium Backup would work better. Your thoughts?
Incidentally, Thing O Doom, you were the one who saved me from the horrible doom of being unrooted. I was not thinking, and updated to .24 without making sure to back my root up, and sure enough, got stuck. Your method was the one that worked for my rather touchy and pissy, although beloved, Transformer. I swear, this thing is possessed by VIKI from I, Robot.
Which brings me to my next question.... Please bear in mind that this is WAY out of my depth, so if it's ridiculous please be careful when you fall out of your chair laughing, but is there some way to extract my Sims game, with all it's progress and data bases, from a nandroid backup, and then just insert/install that back onto my TF101 after the wipe?

Titanium backup.....backup app and data (not system)(do a batch backup for all your apps)
Free on play store.
Just redownload and then reinstall tb after flashing any rom & batch restore your apps with data.
Use the tick in the top right corner to see the batch options. Regularly redo your backups for modified data aswell.

Thanks Scotty.
Unfortunately, I may be out of luck. It seems like no matter what I uninstall, I can't clear any space at all. It stays at around 225MB free, despite me having uninstalled around 300MB of apps, clearing caches, and not having more than 13gigs full in the first place. I wonder if there is a way to side-load it. Like, download the .apk file and install from there... Hmmm.... I'll try that, see if there's any luck there. I paid for Titanium a while back. I just downloaded the Revolver zip (if I have to flash, I'm putting a rom on here, and not messing with ASUS's silliness anymore), so it will let me DL from the web...

OK, I managed to get TB to install, and now have backups. I noticed that TB has a feature called "Extract from Nandroid", and am hoping that if the backup fails somehow, I can pull it from the nandroid. Here goes nothing. Thanks for the help guys!
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2

@Thing, the restore worked. Whatever the Horde of Demons THOUGHT it was going to get away with has failed, and I now have a quietly behaving TF101 again. I'm giving Revolution a test spin.
@Scotty, thank you again for your EXCELLENT suggestion. My Sims backed up and restored beautifully from TB, and it's now my daily driver for backups. They've made a lot of improvements since I stopped using it in favour of MyBackupPro.
My TF101 is purring along, better than before now, and I'm quite pleased with it. Thanks again guys.

I have the same problem also.. every weeks or so my TF would run out of space..
I read somewhere. Here in XDA that to check the logs folder in. /DATA/LOGS
Some apps keep making a bunch of log files and it would filled up my TF free space.. now I just check the logs folder and delete those pesky files (I use es file explorer)
Hope that help you..

Thanks for that! I've bookmarked this thread so I can try that before wiping next time. I've also switched to Titanium Backup, since it actually restores the app data as well.

restarted Xoom and now low Space ?

I restarted my xoom after it was acting funny (all stock 3g verizon) and when it booted back up I was getting an error message saying I'm low on space and I went from having 1.7 gb of apps to 20 some gb. I have seen something like this happen before on a phone but it was becuz I was messing with things and massing things together. I Imagen a full wipe and restore will work, but is there any thing else could with out starting fresh and most of all what could this have been to avoid.
Get a file manager that shows folder sizes and find out wtf is taking so much space then get back to us.

[Q] Restoring: Rom Manager vs. Clockworkmod Recovery

I just recently purchased rom manager premium and havent been backing up and restoring as often as I am now as I'm trying CM7 Nightlies almost daily. I havent had to restore until today as I didnt like the dl/ul speed I was getting with the latest cm7. The last backup I did as my latest ones has been when I updated cm7 and rom manager asked if I wanted to make a backup before installing the latest cm7 and I would choose yes. When I restored today I noticed it didnt remember all my settings, some apps were missing, I had to sign in to my google account again, and I had to restore some system settings/contacts/bookmarks etc etc..I almost doubted I had restored to my previous backup but the build.prop still had the changes I had made and my dl/ul speed was good.
I guess my question is, should I be making my backups directly with clockworkmod to avoid this. The reason I ask is when I've used clockworkmod to make backups and restore in the past it would put back the rom with all my apps/settings exactly the way I left without me having to set everything back up again. Not sure what I'm missing, or has something changed with backups using either of these tools? Maybe I'm just doing it wrong?
nandroid backups aren't always perfect. I've run into issues from backing up both ways. for instance one time I restored a backup and my statusbar was completely missing. It may be placebo effect but I personally have run into less issues backing up and restoring from cwm. just my .02 cents
Dude what gives!? I'm baffled - I swore I posted on this thread - twice!? I'm Losing It Guys...
What I thought I wrote was I had noticed that too and went to test it out. It got me curious. Well what I realized when I went to ROM manager to make a backup was that though we name it from there, all the magic happens in recovery. I am gonna go out on a limb and say that it wouldn't matter which you use, as they are the same. ROM Manager essentially boots into recovery. And I'm not positive but doesn't it restart into recovery? And rebooting into recovery powers you off, then into recovery - where you have to work over to it, but all in all - It's actually only recovery that creates the backup. The one difference is I notice every now and then Thru Rom manager my phone just reboots. So when I put it down and let it do its thing, I've learned to be sure the backup was created.
I came back to see.if there was any more insight into this.... And my posts were gone? Am I trippin????
Edit: yeah I checked the time of OP and I'm positive I did. Even came back and the second post I talked about the recovery doing all the work..... Wild ....

LMAO! Wolf - I just don't know. I mean I edited the first post even. It is that time though - and I found out were moving this weekend. So wifey has me a big ole to do list..... Crazy cooter busted me today. Smart pants got online herself, made an account - boom. This user is currently viewing .......
But baby, when I start my internet my home page is XDA! So if its not off, of course it shows me....
Edit: My phone has literally been buggin. wondering if its Rom related, or if I might need to unroot. And start over. Heard it helps. Ok - back to Rom manager
yeah dyliho is right either way u look at it recovery is backing it up. my train of thought it why not go straight to recovery and avoid the middleman (rom manager) and u would think there would be less problems. like I said could be pure coincedince but I have run into less issues just doing it from recovery

Two very annoying issues with this phone

Rooted, CM 7.1.0, T-Mobile
Not sure if these are CM issues or HTC's crappy hardware issues, but...
1. When I try to turn on the screen using either the top button or bottom trackpad button, the screen will flash on for a second and then go off again. It will do this two or three times until the screen stays on at the lock screen. Didn't do this before CM, but also didn't start until months after I modded to CM.
2. When using the on screen keyboard(in vertical mode) sometimes it's like the touchscreen is responding very slowly to my taps and CERTAIN KEYS will not work at all. So I'll be typing and the keyboard will be kinda sluggish and suddenly I'll notice that none of the a's I'm hitting are registering. I'll hit the area of the screen over the "a" key and the surrounding keys will register but not "a". I will usually have to turn the screen off and then back on before it starts working again. I think it did this the first time before I modded, but can't quite remember.
Anyone else having these problems?
The first problem has happened before on some roms.
I don't recommend using CM 7, its old, outdated and hasn't been fully patched.
I had that same touch keyboard issue with my HTC EVO shift and my HTC Inspire....an of course all my phones were on different ROMS
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4
The first issue... are you oc? If so how much? Really no need to oc this phone. Also, it could be a wake issue, if you are underclocked to much, there is a minimum amount that sometimes has to be higher on some phones than others.
It seems to me these could be kernel issues.

Unless CM over or under clocks by default, then no changes in cpu.
You should run the HTC stock software for a few days or a week to see if the problems you have are persistant across ROMs, or something specific to your current software package.
Just a thought.

Yea, that is something that impacts us all. I could get a lot more dev done if I didn't have to have my plan phone set and ready a specific way each shift to be able to do my job the way i'm expected to.
Best bet would be to wait until you had a day or two off, maybe a weekend or something and when you finish with your obligations before that free time starts:
-try to have near to a full battery or a full one waiting.
Installing a new ROM always works better with a full battery on install, so if you can already be at that step you can start right away instead of waiting for it.
-Make a clockworkmod backup of your device as it sits, and copy that backup to a computer somewhere.
-Get all the ROM files you need to re-install it in a folder with that clockworkmod backup you just made. When you go to put the phone back together to go back to work, if the backup doesn't work for some reason you can at least install fresh and go from there.
-On that note, backup all your apps too. If you do end up having to re-install your ROM you are running right now, being able to install all the apps right away again off the sdcard saves a lot of time and hassle.
Make sure to get those apps backed up to a computer too.
-backup all your contacts. Export everything you can to the sdcard, and then copy that to the computer too.
-Make sure you have all the passwords and account names you need for anything you have installed. (Gmail(s) - Games - accounts tied to apps or services you use)
If you do have to reinstall everything, and you use internet services like dropbox or an internet faxing service you don't want to have to track down those logins if you don't type them often. Make sure you check all your apps and write them down ahead of time.
-Lastly, since you are on CM7, use titanium backup to backup everything and copy that also to the folder on the computer. The word backup in the computer industry is synonymous with redundant, and if it's not you're doing it wrong.
The reason why I said to copy all these backups off the phone and onto a computer is because if something catastrophically bad happens to the phone then what?
By catastrophically bad I mean you format the sdcard by mistake on a factory reset while you're playing with different ROMs - what then?
If you do need the device for work, and you are serious about trying to test the errors against being a phone-specific hardware issue or a software issue with the ROM you are using, then jogging your process by putting this all out there might help you get started.
When you get that downtime, you'll know ahead of time so you can prepare, and then when it hits you have an immediate plan of action to put into place to maximise the time you get for testing.
Also, have the ROM you want to put on it ready to go, and if possible alternates to that - so research the 3 software versions available from HTC for the device.
Also become familiar with this process:
Restore to stock
...maybe download all 3 software versions before your free time hits so you have them already. If everything goes sideways you can always use one of them to restore the device.
If you are S-OFF you have nothing to worry about for doing any of the software updates unless you manually re-lock the device, so just don't do that and you'll be fine.
If you are S-ON speak up and i'll lay out your possible headaches along the way and what we know about them if someone else doesn't first.
If you have prepped before the free time hits:
1 - passwords/account info written down and at the computer you'll be using...
2 - all software packages (restore files, roms, anything else...) that you need downloaded and on the computer you'll be using...
3 - all the apps you use backed up and on the computer you'll be using...
4 - any media like pictures and music or anything else backed up to the computer you'll be using...
5 - a full battery or close to ...
...you are still looking at almost an hours worth of backup time to do the clockworkmod backup, titanium backup, transfer them to the computer, and then you might run a little over that time when you test the clockworkmod backup.
( you always test the backup - the only thing worse then not having a backup is having a corrupt one you thought was good )
...which cuts into your time testing the other ROM enough as it is, but if you aren't ready to do it like this it will take significantly longer.
Since you'll know when the time hits getting a majority of the media, pictures and user generated stuff plus most (if not all) of the apps you use backup up the day before helps cut down on a lot, but that hour is still lost to making a way of putting it back together again.
You also need to leave yourself a solid 4 hours to put the machine back to the way it is before you started on the other side. Again, on install, you want to have a full battery so plan for that too.
4 hours gives you enough time to get everything slapped together from a fresh CM7 install and manually doing all your apps and setting up the phone for work, if the CWM backup fails for some reason and you have to start over.
I just want to see everyone have their phones running right, and if it's a hardware issue then you should get it repaired, if it's a software issue then you should seek a solution - but the quickest way to a result, and the one for your issue, is to directly test it yourself.
Since you sounded like you came to that conclusion too, your only issue now is squeezing it into a time slot you can get so don't hesitate if you have questions on the processes involved.
Edit - also:
If you have multiple MicroSD cards you could use for this, then you can save a lot more time.
You could take the one you have in there now out, and put it to the side so that when you installed your work setup again the memory card and all it's stuff is right there.
Then you could take different memory cards and have them pre-made to what you need, so as soon as you are done backups you power off and swap memory cards.
First one you swap in has the PG59IMG.zip restore file (and nothing else) renamed that way and ready to go, so when you power back on to hboot that installs itself and you save the time spent copying that over before you can install it.
When that finishes, you are back to stock and ready to go, and you didn't change any of the info on your work sdcard.
Something to think about, if work stuff is that important that's what i'd do (and what I do myself, so thought to add it)
Wow Blue, thank you for taking the time to respond. I think I will have some time this weekend to give this a shot. I am S-OFF. And you're right, as long as you plan everything ahead and allow for the time to get set back up, it's not too bad. I'm just trying to decide what rom to try switch to. I really hate sense, so I don't really wanna go back to stock. Wish there was a good stable vanilla to use. Any thoughts?
Oh and if I want to update to the newest radio, which is listed in your "return to stock" thread and then perhaps use another custom rom, like bulletproof, will that radio stick? Do roms not ever update the radio? I just noticed that I am on the original one for the doubleshot, which came out last june.

My pleasure, it's what makes XDA work - people taking time to share what they've learned so others can benefit from or add to the knowledge.
If you are trying to bug-check, honestly, the stock official ROM is a good one to use. It's not something you are so much doing to enjoy the phone, as much as to check on a specific aspect of it.
Further, you are already halfway home on putting the phone back to factory settings if it is a hardware issue, so then you just have to S-ON it and send it in for repair - though you probably won't get it back with S-OFF ability, you will at least be able to unlock it.
Just from directly developing things for the device, and having to go through these testing procedures time and again, I try to set the process up to keep moving, so by going to bone stock if it is broken you already have taken steps to make it what it has to be to send it in, the next looming goal if you aren't going to restore to your work setup.

This was just answered above me, but you can always go back to previous radio installs if you are S-OFF...but only if S-OFF.
I've run Bulletproof on the new radio and it runs fine, so doesn't matter either way on that one - other ROMs you'll have to ask the author.
ROMs can update the radio, or only work on specific ones, but for our device I don't think it's been an issue yet, pretty sure everything works with everything on that part.

Go Backup to backup EVERYTHING

My apologies if I'm cluttering up the board with a topic that everyone but me knows all about, but holy cow I just found the best thing ever! (Okay, so that might be a slight exageration...)
But seriously folks, I just found Go Backup on the Android Market (Or Play Store or whatever the kids are calling it these days)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jiubang.go.backup.pro&feature=nav_result#?t=W10.
I've been a Titanium user forever, and it's certainly got more functionality that Go Backup the way you can manipulate apps and what not, but Go Backup is just a beast when it comes to backing up everything. It does sms, mms, contacts, apps with data, wifi access points, etc...
So when you want to switch ROMs and keep all your stuff, it's litterally like 1 click to backup everything and then 1 click to restore it all once you put a new ROM on.
One thing though is that I recomend turning on Airplane mode during the restore. I got a phone call in the middle of my restore and it loused things up so I had to start over.
It's quirky though. You might have to fiddle with the restore to get it to run all the way through, but it works. When it fails during the restore though it knows where it failed and will let you uncheck the parts that already succeeded. Pretty neat.
It's kind of like the old Mousetrap game. Where it was really awesome but something already failed during the execution so you'd have to nudge the guy into the water barrel to get it moving again. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you are under 30 and should research how awesome board games used to be)
I don't work for the Go team. I'm not affiliated with them. I just thought it was cool and wanted the community to know about it.

Nice to see someone else on the planet that remembers them!
My dad started taking me to games their first year back in 1982. They've been gone now almost twice as long as they were here, and I still love the team and miss that game day experience. Now I'm a Hershey Bears season ticket holder. To quote Bob Dylan, Oh the times they are a changin'.
About Apps2zip, I just read the write up about it on the Market and it's not clear about if it backs up just the apps of if it backs up the app data as well. I used to use a terminal emulator command line script that created a flashable zip of all your apps, but it didn't include the app data. Does this one? (Normally I'd just try something instead of asking simple questions but that's a time consuming process and I don't feel like it  )

[Q] Odys Xelio 10PRO Tablet General Q&A

Let's try to keep all Q&A's for this tablet in one thread for now. Wonder if I should drop tips here too?
Autocreates junk files
ONE folder gets filled with junk files which renders the entire tablet almost unusable. I can't even delete the files.
All I can do is to shut down the tablet, connect the SD to a pc and backup all files, EXCEPT the backup folder as it's corrupted.
My tablet is running on Android 4.1.x (it DOES say "x" in the phone info) stock rom with root access.
It's ONLY folders called something with "Backup", like "Backups" and "TitaniumBackup" that have been affected so far.
It's also only the folder with that name on my EXTERNAL SD that's affected.
Several virus scans have been performed which came up clean.
I even wiped the entire unit including System/data/cache, also to no avail.
This issue happens MORE than once per day. The tablet gets very sluggish, and the files are there.
I found out that when I did NOT have a folder with "backup" in it, then it runs for days with no issues.
Note that I also have a phone (LG Optimus 2X) which have NO problems. The phone uses a rooted Android 4.2.2 custom rom.
I attached a dual screenshot showing a clean folder and one full of junk. Note dates for creation.
Anyone have any ideas as to what causes it?
Further testing shows that other folders are ALSO affected, but ONLY folders containing Titanium Backup Pro backup files.
Even more testing shows that even if I try to use a sub-sub folder, then it still happens.
I even tried using a folder name containing spaces and danish national letters:
"/mnt/external_sd/Titanium/Sikkerhedskopier/HÃ¥ber at denne mappe virker/"
Still get the junk files, as seen on the screenshot.
Note the reported size and date of the files.
Dates seem very random, and although all file managers shows the SDCard is almost empty,
then the files put together adds up to much more than the 16GB the card is in size. So something is NOT right.
I have also noted that I can delete SOME of them with Root Explorer, but as soon as I do a refresh then new files are already made.
Logcat only shows files deleted, but not added.
I could REALLY use some help with this.
FURTHER testing shows the files are ONLY created when Titanium Backup Pro is set to do regular backups, so I am beginning to suspect it's a combination of my tablet AND Titanium that is the cause.
I have noticed my tablet kills the menu at what to ME is random intervals.
It doesn't matter if I even USE the tablet, just as long as it's on.
Anyone have an idea what might be the cause and maybe how to fix it?
I have attached an alogcat file, from a point where it happened.
I WANTED to attach it, but it seems like I am not allowed... can't even use smilies????
Managed to attach the logcat that failed the other day.
Must admit that I an beginning to wonder if I just write for my self, or somebody is actually READING this?

TIP!
How to add GPS functionality to the tablet using an Android phone:
1. Download "Bluetooth GPS" from Google Play to the tablet.
2. Download "GPS over BT" from Google Play to the phone.
3. Pair the two devices.
4. Start up the programs and connect from the tablet to the phone.
This has been tested with a 4.2.3 phone and a 4.1.x tablet.

Just ordered my 10", and was wondering if anyone could give me a quick rundown on installing Google Play Store on it, is it just a matter of side loading the apk or is there more to it ?

It's pre-installed, so no worries
All you have to do is enter your Gmail address and password during setup and you are all set.

Thanks for the quick reply, but I believe we are talking/looking at 2 different versions of the same thing though. Probably same hardware with just a little bit different versions of firmware/software. Odys/Xelio. I don't have mine in hand yet, should have sometime next week and will defiantly let you know how it goes when I get it, still learning the Android OS, have had a Nexus 7 for a little over a year now, and a HTC Evo 4G LTE for some months now, so this tablet was purchased just for the 10" screen for reading and have sold my Nexus waiting for the 7-2 (STILL)..
I had links to both, but still can't post URL's yet, sorry
Eh what were you thinking about then, when talking about Google Play Store?
I want to help when I can
Update: Early morning here so...
It's not the Xelio10Pro you are getting?

Well, I got it yesterday sideloaded the Play Store and several other apps & apk's with no issues, it seems to be a very light a sleek little tablet with no bloatware at all, I really want to like this tablet but the LCD screen is just awful. I really wish I could adjust contrast or something more then just brightness, the glossy face on it and the res just make it really hard to read or look at any sort of pictures, to just read text isn't bad but with pics it just has such a glare and brightness it's just weird to explain. I had already ordered some generic 10.1" tablet screen protectors and they should be here in a few days, so I am really hoping that they are a little bit matte and it'll help or fix the glare issue as I really want to like this tablet.
I know how you feel.
I generally have issues with the touch sensitivity, but have gotten used to it now.
I also noticed the reflection from the screen, which is pretty bad. Makes the tablet useless in sunlight. Hope you can give some good news on that when you get the cover.
It IS good as an ebook reader as long as your surroundings isn't too bright.
I also think it is quite powerful, considering the price.

I have been in contact with Odys support with a few questions.
They told me that they will NOT update the tablet. Not even to 4.2.2. They claim it requires too much of the hardware,
even though I told them I have a phone with only one fourth the memory of the tablet and a smaller CPU running 4.2.2 smoothly.
It seems like they have decided to solve all problems with a standard answer: reflash the stock firmware.
They even told me to do that AFTER I told them I already tried that.

I decided NOT to use my external SD card after the last two restores to factory default (including full flash of factory firmware).
First time after that restore, I installed Titanium Backup Pro, and set up a schedule as always.
This resulted in my INTERNAL SD card became read-only.
Only way to fix that was another firmware flash.
I then decided NOT to install Titanium Backup Pro again.
The tablet has been working perfectly ever since.

The manual is in german though.
If someone can/want to translate that to english for me then I'll add it to the package.

First, thanks a lot for your monologue
And no, you're not the only person with this tablet. And this was the only place where I found firmware... thanks so much for uploading this, helped me a lot as I nearly bricked my tab while rooting it. Now after flashing it with the new FW, everything works smooth again And this without contacting Odys, and late on a saturday night, perfect, made my day!
Btw., I have the same issue with the huge Titanium Backup folder... :/
Now that I know that I am not alone, then I have this to say:
You are all welcome to post your experiences with this tablet (both good and bad)
