hi guys, i'm wondering if theres something wrong with me nexus s cause it drains battery really quick.
settings:
wifi - always on
background data disabled
display on lowest brightness
using go launcher
use phone couple hours a day. (maybe 3 - 4 hours on display?)
by the end of the day, im at like 10% or less battery. (unplug around 8AM and 10% around 15h later).
i went to sleep yesterday on full battery and didn't charge. woke up and i'm at 75%!
email seems to be the biggest battery drainer apart from display. i don't even use my email that often, but it always comes back in the 'running applications' list.
any way to fix?
What's your current setup? Are you running stock or a custom ROM and kernel?
A ~80% drain in 15 hours is something I have too btw, but some people get their device to last almost 2 days. Based on your usage, you should at least get around 20-24 hours.
One of the best enhancements the custom ROMs gave us, battery wise, is the Deep Idle mod. That'll make your battery drain maybe 2% over night.
You say the E-mail app is using the most battery... Maybe it's constantly checking whichever server you connect it to. The native Gmail app had battery drain issues in the very first releases of GB but those have been worked out a long time ago.

thanks for the reply
i'm on stock rom, no root.
also im using the email app not the gmail app (not sure if it makes a difference) and i set the update interval to never.
Can you go to Settings => Battery - Click the graph and post the top 5-6 stats from that list please?
Also, which version of Gingerbread are you running? The last one? (2.3.7)
And apparently I was mistaken, it was the E-mail client and not the Gmail client that had reported battery drain issues before:

just went from 83% to 66% from listening to uber music for half an hour and playing 10mins of angry birds at the same time...
tempted to root my phone just forbthe battery life. lool
That's not too abnormal, gaming asks a lot of the battery.
What is stopping you from rooting and trying out new ROMs? You have Nexus S after all, the possibilites are legion

installed liquid 3.2 and was great but the last week i starting getting horrible battery life. On my stock batter taking the phone off the charger at around 8 it would last literally until 5 oclock before it died. got the rezound battery and its considerably better but still only last me until 8. all light use with some text and light internet use. going to battery usage in settings and android system is taking up over 40% not sure if that was normal before but when i click on it is shows the following packages running: settings storage, settings, liquid settings, status bar, vpn services, liquid settings (again) android system, account and sync settings, google backup transport, and theme chooser. think any of those is draining my batt? and yes i tried to wipe and reinstall the rom and same
WOW WTF! I am having the exact same issue with the exact same rom at the exact same time. I'm using an extended battery and I'm having issues with it dying around 8 or 9 each night after being off the charger starting at 6:30 in the morning. What is going on here?
Did you install any new apps? I had an issue with very premature battery depletion after installing World of Goo demo and updated Google Maps. After uninstalling World of Goo battery life returned to normal. As a side note, I started getting a lot of marketing calls. Grrrr to World of Goo...

not sure. installed various apps that wouldn't even know where to start to look. wouldn't the battery usage monitor in the settings tell me if an app is draining my batt?
I recently got a new lg g2x. Seems like an alright device (it's not the best out there, but it was free so it'll do). The only thing I can't stand it even with pretty low usage i'm getting around 12 hours of battery life max. With the same type of usage from the sensation I had before I would be getting around 24 hours or more.
Any one got any ideas of what to do? I'm currently on eaglesblood, I was on CM7 latest nightly before, and before that was stock. All battery life sucked though.
Any help would be appreciated. I did order a spare battery on ebay, that i'm hoping might do some good.

What happened to your Sensation?
Have you tried calibrating after flashing a new ROM? Personally, fitsnugly's CM7 Kang plus Faux's or Morfic's Trinity kernel has always given me really good battery life. Around 24 hours with average useage.
I'm returning it via American Express premium returns. By calibrate you mean?

Use the battery calibration app in the market after flashing new roms. If you can't figure out how to make your battery last longer, just buy an extended battery for like 12 dollars off ebay. Everybody has had good luck with them. There's a thread over it in the accessories portion of the g2x forum.

Alright, I already ordered a spare battery, but I'm not sure what else it could be. I'll post back after I get the battery and try calibrating it.
Just in case you may have overlooked this....turn your wifi off when not using it. Wifi burns goood.
My wifi is always off, although a few times when trying to turn it on when just flashing CM7 it resulted with not being able to turn it on due to some "error." A recent example of my battery drain is: Cell Standby 43%, Phone Idle 32%, Display 16%, Android System 11%.
Calibrating would be my advice. I get a good 24 hours of usage with CM7 with normal usage. I get 30+ with light usage, and this is with wifi set to never sleep.
Everyone that gets 16+ hours, do you have Data running all the time?
Data + Light Use = 8hr MAX
Juice Defender "Data Off" + Light Use = 14hrs MAX
Juice Defender "Data Off" + Medium USE = 8hrs
Only did a couple texting and my battery is at 35% already, and its only been 6 hours...
Battery Calibrate = Flash new rom > 100% > Calibrate > use and recharge for 3 days...

Did you check what is using battery? And if your phone is actually "sleeping" in battery info?
I'm running [ROM] [PORT] G2X SINGH UI v1.12.30 (MIUI + MODS)
Cell Standby 26%
Phone Idle 23%
Andriod System 17%
Telephony System 15%
FOTA Kill 7% << Don't know what that is
Launcher 6%
Voice Calls 5%
10017 4% << Don't know what that is
Everything else is 1%
How can I find out if my Phone "Actually Sleeping"?
If it's actually sleeping, then your phone would not have any activity under "awake" while the screen is off. Also currently I'm on 30 hours battery with 33% left.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
It show that it's was awake the whole time... the past 7 hours...
When I scroll down it show these that is on the whole time:
Launcher
Telephony Service on and off
Messaging
Facebook
Gmail
Email
Weird though, I have Juice Defender on Extreme.. so there isn't any data running until I enable it.
Well to find out if it's been awake the whole time you have to go in one more menu deeper. You can do that by pressing the graph in the battery stats.

i recently installed stock froyo (just rooted) and i actually get amazing battery life...not even running juice defender or anything and ive been using my phone quite frequently. data on and off throughout the day, near constant texting, approx 1hr worth of talk time and other miscellaneous activities and i still have 60% left of my battery...its been on for about 16hrs now

I'm looking in the graph, Awake is on the whole time. Then when I scroll down, these are the program is always on:
Launcher, Telephony Service, Messaging, Facebook, Gmail, Email, Maps
Well I just installed Advance Task Killer again.. even though alot of people said it doesn't work. I'm going to test that for the rest of the day.

I'm currently exploring which programs are preventing the phone to stay "asleep."
I freeze lots of programs I don't use, the only ones I see constantly active now are Google maps, Facebook, and the launcher (which I hope isn't one of the issues).
I froze the first 2 and I'll be doing tests today to see exactly what it is.
Do you guys use the default MIUI launcher?
Yeah I'm using the default MIUI launcher..
I also freezed MAP and FACEBOOK... see how that goes for the rest of the day.
Phone was off for about an hour straight, think I'm getting better "sleep" periods. Launcher activity is constantly blue.
I use the modified launcher with the extended settings. Only widget on it is fancy widget pro.
Going to see how well the phone fairs for the rest of the day.
EDIT:
Been doing research, apparently telocation causes a lot of battery drain, and alarm manager (although mine is almost always asleep).
I recently uninstalled fancy widget in hopes that launcher won't keep itself awake, and froze the telocation and no freeze or force close on anything.
I had a major battery issue with my last install of CM7 on a new G2X, what fixed it for me was enabling "use wireless networks" in location and security settings. I noticed something was odd when I ran speedtest and every time it would try to connect to servers in NY or NJ(I live in NC).....I'm not exactly sure what was going on, but enabling it fixed my battery life.
Hey guys,
I'm having trouble with the battery for my Galaxy S depleting really quickly (about 10% per hour).
I'm running ICS with teamhacksung's latest build (13) and platypus 3.08 NEO 3.0 kernel.
I thought initially that it was a kernel problem (I was running FUGU, which isn't on the preferred list of hacksung), so yesterday I wiped the whole thing, upgraded from build 12 to 13, flashed the kernel, wiped all of the caches and restarted.
The battery seemed fine and it decreased about 10% in 8 hours on standby, which is more than acceptable.
Then I was wokenup at 5 am by the phone telling me it needed charging (it had dropped 70%+ charge in 5 hours). By looking at the battery stats (attached below) it says that 70% of the battery is drawn by the OS, upon closer inspection it seems as though the system is draining when it becomes actives, and it looks as though it's becoming active on a regular interval. I thought this might be due to Appkiller, but I've since disabled it and it still seems to be draining pretty quickly.
The only other thing I can think of is that when I receive an email or sms, the settings and back buttons light up and stay on. Could that be the drain?
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks a mil
Cheers
Paul
Update: Swype to blame
Hi guys, I think I've solved it. If I don't post here again then I am right.
The problem is Swype. I installed it on ICS and it works great, but when I try to download additional languages, it seems to get stuck in a loop of attempting to download and failing. This results in the phone constantly being on and never going to sleep more which depletes the battery in a matter of hours, and of more than 170mb of mobile data raked up in a couple of days.
I haven't reinstalled Swype yet, I want to see if the battery lasts today before I do, but I will try to reinstall it without the additional languages and see if it works like that.
Cheers
Paul
Yes, confirmed, it was the installation of additional Languages in Swype.
Cheers
Thanks a lot for your question + solution. Using devil 1.1 kernel and Teamhacksung build v16 I had exactly the same problems. Now I removed Swype, which didn't want to download the Dutch language pack anyway.
Hey all
I am loving ICS on my Xoom. However, I have noticed that "Android OS" is taking up tons of battery, with high awake times. I have had it unplugged for about 3 days, and the screen has only been on for like 2 hours. However, "Android OS" is the highest battery eater on the list and has kept the device awake for over 10 hours. Anyone else seeing this? I am having the same problem on my Galaxy Nexus. Thanks for any input.
Have you tried CPU Spy? Mine shows deep sleep when the screen is off. Also screen is the biggest battery user, by far.
Yeah. I used it and it said that it spent 2 hours at 1000mhz (amount of time the screen was on) and 12 hours at 216mhz and 76 hours in deep sleep. That 12 hours is taken by Android OS, and I don't know why. It is killing my battery. Does anyone know why Android OS is staying awake so much?
It is probably apps that are trying to sync. See what you have that might be trying to update/sync.
You also may want to try uninstalling some older applications. I think I read somewhere that some older non-ICS optimized apps can prevent the OS from sleeping.

Do you know of any that are especially problematic?
I have 120 apps. Isolating the problem is going to prove to be difficult. Any ideas which ones? This has been happening with my Nexus for 3 weeks now, nobody else is seeing Android OS taking up a lot of awake time?

Just wipe your system clean and reinstall your apps. That will fix all your ICS upgrade issues.
Are you syncing email via activesync? If so, turn it off for a while and check if it makes a difference. This is what makes android os go through the roof for me on the tablet and the phone!

Is that 120 downloaded apps or 120 altogether (including system apps)? Either way, disabling auto-sync and background data before putting your Xoom down could/should help curb the excess battery drain. The only issue with that is certain apps, like Market, won't function without background data enabled but that shouldn't be an issue if you won't be using your Xoom for a while. You could search the forums or Google on how to create scripts to disable/enable background data and auto-sync for you when you put the device to sleep and wake it back up, respectively. Or just search the Market for an app that does that for you.
Do you leave your wireless radios on (wifi, bluetooth, etc.) while not using your Xoom? Setting wifi to disconnect while sleep may also help.
Thank you all for your input, however I think many people do not understand what I am saying...
I understand how to reduce battery drain IN GENERAL, what I am asking is, are people seeing battery drain faster overall on ICS compared to HC? I am, and I think that Android OS is the culprit. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks!
You know, I had the same exact problem when I installed the first fully functional EOS ICS rom for my Verizon Xoom. The Android OS kept draining the hell out of my battery. I went from having about 5 days of battery life to 1 or two tops.
I decided to try a different rom. Since I don't have Mobile Internet, I decided to experiment and installed the Wingray Version of the CM9 ICS Leak(Kang) and I haven't had this issue since.
So I'm not sure what fixed it, was it because I tried a different type of rom, or was it because I downloaded the Wingray version? Not sure, but either way the problem stopped.
Perhaps try a different rom if you're rooted?
I am experience this issue on my Nexus. Try using easy batter saver. It extends my battery life very well.
https://market.android.com/details?...GwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5lYXN5LmJhdHRlcnkuc2F2ZXIiXQ..
I'm seeing some of the same issues on EoS nightly 49. I'm down to 88 percent with barely any use. 14 hours of up time. Android OS at 3hrs and 27 mins up time.

I'm not, if anything ICS is giving me better battery life than HC. Even considering I'm now overclocked and using my Xoom a lot more.
I think a lot of people misinterpret the battery % used though. Just because something is using a higher percent of battery does not mean its sucking your battery down, there will always be something at top of that % list, it doesn't mean there's a problem. It's a relative list. It's entirely possible (and reasonable IMO) to have Android OS at the top of your list if you've used your device for only 2 hours over 3 days! You barely used it, what would you expect to be at the top?
that's a known problem,
Android OS is also taking up a lot in the stats for e.g. the Galaxy S on its ICS port
a related question though:
I'm mainly using my Xoom for ebook reading (PDFs via ezPDF and/or repligo reader) - which ROM in your opinion offers the better battery runtime
Team Eos ICS ROM
or
the Team Tiamat Moray ROM
?
Many thanks in advance !
Android OS battery bug 4.0.3
If your android device has been off for a considerable amount of time, Android os should not be at the top of battery usage list; phone idle would be in that spot under normal situation. However, there is a battery bug in 4.0.3. After installing 4.0.4 on my Gnex it fixed the problem (from my understanding 4.0.4 was only for the Gnex as its a newer device and the Xoom wifi is slowly becoming obsolete). I'm guessing this will be fixed in 4.0.5 that will be released sooner or later... my guess is later with aging devices.
My Wifi only Xoom with Team EOS is getting 4+ days of battery life and my screen is whats taking most of the battery. I am using the latest nightly as well as the latest GAPPs. There is something running on your Tablet that is casing the problem you are having. I am having no probles with ICS at all and having great battery life. Have you tryed using maybe setcpu to setup a screen off profle. I would maybe think about doing a full wipe and starting over with the latest of everything.
My android OS was at the top of my battery usage (74%) even when in sleep mode. I used to get 5-6 days, now I get only 2 at best.
I disabled wireless and the drain goes away, android os goes back down to 2-3%.
Any ideas?
ICS 4.04 Xoom WiFi only.
Thanks
Bruce
