battery drain? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys, i'm wondering if theres something wrong with me nexus s cause it drains battery really quick.
settings:
wifi - always on
background data disabled
display on lowest brightness
using go launcher
use phone couple hours a day. (maybe 3 - 4 hours on display?)
by the end of the day, im at like 10% or less battery. (unplug around 8AM and 10% around 15h later).
i went to sleep yesterday on full battery and didn't charge. woke up and i'm at 75%!
email seems to be the biggest battery drainer apart from display. i don't even use my email that often, but it always comes back in the 'running applications' list.
any way to fix?

What's your current setup? Are you running stock or a custom ROM and kernel?
A ~80% drain in 15 hours is something I have too btw, but some people get their device to last almost 2 days. Based on your usage, you should at least get around 20-24 hours.
One of the best enhancements the custom ROMs gave us, battery wise, is the Deep Idle mod. That'll make your battery drain maybe 2% over night.
You say the E-mail app is using the most battery... Maybe it's constantly checking whichever server you connect it to. The native Gmail app had battery drain issues in the very first releases of GB but those have been worked out a long time ago.

thanks for the reply
i'm on stock rom, no root.
also im using the email app not the gmail app (not sure if it makes a difference) and i set the update interval to never.

Can you go to Settings => Battery - Click the graph and post the top 5-6 stats from that list please?
Also, which version of Gingerbread are you running? The last one? (2.3.7)
And apparently I was mistaken, it was the E-mail client and not the Gmail client that had reported battery drain issues before:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075887&page=2
Greetz

just went from 83% to 66% from listening to uber music for half an hour and playing 10mins of angry birds at the same time...
tempted to root my phone just forbthe battery life. lool

That's not too abnormal, gaming asks a lot of the battery.
What is stopping you from rooting and trying out new ROMs? You have Nexus S after all, the possibilites are legion

Battery life VASTLY improved since update

unplugged 2 hours, wifi on, gps on, auto update on, facebook, played friut ninja for about 20 minutes, 1 game of cribbage, and been getting 4-5 email per hour, battery at 86%, before I would have been at 60% with that much use.
Anyone else seen battery life increases?
This. It's noon and I'm still at 80%. I used to have to set my phone to flight mode all day at work just to make it through the day. Now I can leave 3G on all day and not worry about it. That's the best part of the update in my opinion.
I was about to post this also. Yes, I have noticed a dramatic increase in battery life since I've updated. Now granted, it's been less than 24 hours but it is noticeable. I'll see how it goes over the next few days. But I agree, I am very happy with the update so far.
Which ROM we're you guys running before? FJ6 (stock)? A lot of users noticed better battery life after updating to some of the leaked builds (JH2 onwards)

I'm running completely stock-out-of-the-box since I got it.
I actually have worse battery life since updating. Have background sync off,GPS off, push off and lost 30% from full charge in 2 hours

I have noticed the same with all of the same settings as you
4h 45min since unplug.
Email push multiple times an hour, text messages, light internet use, light market use and 35 minutes of guns'n'glory. I am at 71%
Glad someone else noticed this
I'm a victim of the partial update but my battery drain has been nearly half! I've actually left live wallpapers on and can make it through the while day at the rate I'm going

6 hours 53 minutes since unplug and I'm at 23% battery. This is roughly on track with previous battery depletion, but today I've been doing heavier internet and Facebook use than usual. I think that, previous to this update, I would have had to charge by now. This is with background data and sync on, over wifi, with a combination of Google Listen, Music Player, and Pandora use.
The telling point is that screen battery use is about 10-12% lower than usual for this type of usage, at 54%. I've seen it as high as 70% on days when I'm playing around with the phone a lot.
I'm ready to call this an improvement.

My phone was at about 75% at around 8:00PM last night. It's currently 2:42PM now and it's only down to 25%. Granted, it was in sleep mode from around 12:30AM to about 7:00AM. But I did use it moderately last night and throughout the day today. So the battery performance has definitely improved for mine (stock with yesterday's update).
For those who have seen an improvement:
- Did you use a task killer pre-update?
- Are you using one now?

Unfortunately my battery life has been greatly decreased by the update. My phone is rooted, but the update installed without any trouble on the first try. Before the update the phone was fine between 9am and 1-2am without charging it at all. That's being on wifi most of the time, and maybe a bit of talking, e-mail, and rss reading. Once asleep I'd let it charge overnight. Typically Display used the most battery, usually about 50%.
Since the update I find that I need to charge the phone in the middle of the day. The first full day of the update I used the audio player for several hours, so I thought maybe that was it, but I've done that before without a major impact on the battery. Today I didn't use the audio player at all, and after 8 hours the battery is down to 26%.
According to the power usage information the largest consumer is Voice calls, at 29%. That was 11m 46s of call time. Looking at Juiceplotter, for a typical day at work before the update my battery dropped about 2% in 2 hours, with the phone on wifi, and otherwise idle. Today the phone lost 6-9% in 2 hours of being idle.
The last time I charged my phone was yesterday morning. I just plugged it in an hour ago at 15%. Thats like, 35 hours on a charge after moderate usage. Not bad. Much better than my old G1 heh.
I'm at 45 hours, still at 29%. Light usage, probably ~12 hrs in flight mode, but music player on for about 5 hrs, 5 min voice call, a few texts, some facebook/web. Still very impressive!
I've had slightly better battery life since the update.

Battery life is surprising me lately.

My battery has been doing really good lately actually. It makes me feel good when people are like ah i need to charge my phone and i look and i still have around 80% and by the end of the day i still have around 50 or sometimes 60%. My old G1 would be at around 20 by the end of the day. Just thought i would share something positive amidst all the negativity
Sent from my captivate so excuse the spelling mistakes
Add me to that list. Ive been doing some tweaking to see how much battery life I can get . Just checked and after 8 hrs unplug time Im at 94%
what roms/tweaks have you done? how have you used your phone?
1. all black background
2. disabled syncing and background data
3. disabled gps
4. disabled sound and haptic feedback
5. launcher pro tweaks (less smooth animations)
6. threw it on airplane mode while i sat in class
7. eclair. i hear custom roms are huge battery drainers
8. brightness on lowest all the time (disable smart brightness option)
battery performance while on standby is surprisingly good. sure these settings may not allow you to get the most out of your phone but if you are ever in a situation where you have to get absolutely the most life out of your phone you know what to do.

I'm currently on a stock ROM after some trouble flashing something else i just went back to stock with ODIN, im too lazy to reroot right now haha, pretty much i just have GPS off, disable syncing, darker backgrounds, I use the Dark XDA theme,i turn Wifi on when i'm home but other than that i have it off. I', just using the stock launcher, turned off all screen animations- it makes everything seem faster- and thats about it that i can think of right now. i use my phone pretty moderate to heavily on a daily basis. mostly for texting and browsing the internet. I also play a few games here and there when i get bored. Hope this helps
I have found the battery life to reasonable on the phone unless I am using it heavily. For example, today I have had it on for almost 15 hours and still have 58% battery left. This is with background data on, monitoring 5 e-mail accounts, some FB usage, some browser usage, a few phone calls, screen brightness set to medium most of the time, some music player usage, and WiFi set to on all day. I very often during the day unlock the phone and sync my e-mail manually for one of my accounts as it is iffy on retrieving and I have been waiting for something to come in.
ONE THING I HAVE NOTICED TO DRAIN: I have had this issue a couple of times. I am running stock, and when I have experienced unusual battery drain it has been down to the same thing each time. The SnsService has been stuck 'restarting' under the running services list. Stopping the service has returned the battery life to where it should be for me (for example yesterday I was down to 50% battery after about 6 hours with virtually no use. Checked SNS and it was as described above, and stopping it brought the battery life back in line to usual for me).
I typically with light to moderate use get around 24 - 36 hours, but I usually recharge each night anyway.
same here
i even have a spare battery and i rarely use it.
if u disable 3g battery life can last u as long as 3-4 days, only if the captivate has that capability to go 2g with a tap of a button

Battery drain in standby issue?

Hi all,
My 6 days old Sensation (Vodafone contract UK) discharge a huge amount during Standby (200-350mA). I got the number via Battery Widget Pro 1.65. For the first few days I did deplete the battery fully before charging it to full. Today I have factory reset it to the original condition at around 4pm with 58% battery full. Now at 9pm, it is only 18%. During this time, I spent about 1 hour with the phone, the rest is standby. I set the widget to monitor with 1 minute interval and when looking at the log file, it can be seen that the phone consumed from 200-400mA during the standby time. Coming from HD2 with Android modded 3-8mA standby consumption, this is a huge huge dissapoinment!
Is this because of my battery or is this my phone? Should I ask for a replacement? What about you, did you see similar pattern?
Thanks,
Duong

Ditto!! So annoyed since I too am coming from HD2 where HyperDroid's consumption had dropped to a flat 2mA in standby. This is insane for a native android device. Not to mention the heating while playing games and most importantly, the front facing camera producing upside down image during fring video chats.. grrr!
Dunno what the cause OR solution is (besides switching over to a custom rom if and when the BL gets unlocked and people like pongster develop for this device)...
Overall, sexy device but disappointed with such major holes left unattended..
A little offtopic but was a battery related questions and did not wanna start a new thread so posting here -
Does anybody know of if there's any app which can get the battery percent to show in the top bar instead of the default indicator?
Thanks

Any ideas on how I can do that? I tried using current widget but I guess because it's not rooted, current widget showed me a log of 0mA all throughout (yeah rite! hehe)
when I figure it out myself I'll let you know.
Current things I found that killed my battery over night: VTOK & Google Latitude
I went into Settings --> About Phone --> Battery --> Battery Use and checked, and it says display is eating most of my battery.
As far as mine, I get about 12 hours of battery life with standard usage, with the display eating most of the life, so if you're saying the screen is off, you might get different results...
over my 8h sleep battery dropped like 10%, nothing special (count in : wifi on, sync with gmail, weather) guys. new phone, fresh unoptimized kernel and radio. it'll get better. my prev phone (desire) was like sh*t at beginning in relating to its current spec rom ... and btw for checkin consuption : system panel (not lite), there is monitoring and u can see which apps running again if ya shoot them, check sync-s etc. many many thing to do, hard to tell in a single post

well it certainly sounds like a part of it is specimen issue.. here's my latest experience... last few times i have let it completely discharge and then charge back while the phone was off so i dont mess with it... once 100% charged, i switched the phone on and received a call.. a 25 minute conversation ate away 15% of my battery... LOL...
then, (now it gets better)... in 2 hrs of standby, the phone was at 60% which means it lost another 15% battery in 2 hrs of "standby".. im not sure if i can even call that state a "standby" anymore...
anyways... im wondering if its worth pinning hopes on rom development on our forum or should i just return this and go with something like nexus S which, O well, I can live with... atleast it has a 3300mA batterypack available... what's the use of kickass speeds and features if i have to use a phone like a desktop..
Hey, I have pretty bad battery drain during stand by as well I recommend trying to adjust the sync accounts, esp HTC hub and how often it updates that should improve it...I have a bunch of HTC widgets set up so im suspecting that being the reason for battery drain during stand by also adjust your email update setting accordingly. Every little bit helps!
Battery gauge stuck at 100%
Another one slightly off topic - but why start another battery thread.
It is the second day with my Sensation, and since I took the phone off the charger this morning, the battery gauge has been stuck at 100%. All other apps reading the battery status (e.g. Battery Widget) show the same number. I rebooted the phone multiple times, replaced the battery - nothing - permanent 100%. Has anyone had a similar experience? Did I get a perpetuum mobile ?
BTW the readings were fine yesterday.

Thanks for the pointer.. I will surely try that and see if it makes a difference..
That being said, call me crazy but it just occurs to me that HTC should be putting in some minimal efforts to check off basic quirks like battery consumption and QC. I mean all of us are spending a buttload of money on these devices year over year and then we rely on our devs here to give us basic functionality. Back in the days the reason people joined forums was to tweak devices.. Now it almost feels like we might as well expect only the hardware for the price we pay... disappointed!
Anywho...
I fully charged the phone before I went to bed last night. Eight hours later, the battery is at 10%. Is there something wrong with the battery?
Try using the Spare Parts app to see what's really using the battery in detail.

Terrible Battery life problem

I recently got a new lg g2x. Seems like an alright device (it's not the best out there, but it was free so it'll do). The only thing I can't stand it even with pretty low usage i'm getting around 12 hours of battery life max. With the same type of usage from the sensation I had before I would be getting around 24 hours or more.
Any one got any ideas of what to do? I'm currently on eaglesblood, I was on CM7 latest nightly before, and before that was stock. All battery life sucked though.
Any help would be appreciated. I did order a spare battery on ebay, that i'm hoping might do some good.

What happened to your Sensation?
Have you tried calibrating after flashing a new ROM? Personally, fitsnugly's CM7 Kang plus Faux's or Morfic's Trinity kernel has always given me really good battery life. Around 24 hours with average useage.
I'm returning it via American Express premium returns. By calibrate you mean?

Use the battery calibration app in the market after flashing new roms. If you can't figure out how to make your battery last longer, just buy an extended battery for like 12 dollars off ebay. Everybody has had good luck with them. There's a thread over it in the accessories portion of the g2x forum.

Alright, I already ordered a spare battery, but I'm not sure what else it could be. I'll post back after I get the battery and try calibrating it.
Just in case you may have overlooked this....turn your wifi off when not using it. Wifi burns goood.
My wifi is always off, although a few times when trying to turn it on when just flashing CM7 it resulted with not being able to turn it on due to some "error." A recent example of my battery drain is: Cell Standby 43%, Phone Idle 32%, Display 16%, Android System 11%.
Calibrating would be my advice. I get a good 24 hours of usage with CM7 with normal usage. I get 30+ with light usage, and this is with wifi set to never sleep.
Everyone that gets 16+ hours, do you have Data running all the time?
Data + Light Use = 8hr MAX
Juice Defender "Data Off" + Light Use = 14hrs MAX
Juice Defender "Data Off" + Medium USE = 8hrs
Only did a couple texting and my battery is at 35% already, and its only been 6 hours...
Battery Calibrate = Flash new rom > 100% > Calibrate > use and recharge for 3 days...

Did you check what is using battery? And if your phone is actually "sleeping" in battery info?

Everything else is 1%
How can I find out if my Phone "Actually Sleeping"?
If it's actually sleeping, then your phone would not have any activity under "awake" while the screen is off. Also currently I'm on 30 hours battery with 33% left.

Weird though, I have Juice Defender on Extreme.. so there isn't any data running until I enable it.
Well to find out if it's been awake the whole time you have to go in one more menu deeper. You can do that by pressing the graph in the battery stats.

I'm currently exploring which programs are preventing the phone to stay "asleep."
I freeze lots of programs I don't use, the only ones I see constantly active now are Google maps, Facebook, and the launcher (which I hope isn't one of the issues).
I froze the first 2 and I'll be doing tests today to see exactly what it is.
Do you guys use the default MIUI launcher?
Yeah I'm using the default MIUI launcher..
I also freezed MAP and FACEBOOK... see how that goes for the rest of the day.
Phone was off for about an hour straight, think I'm getting better "sleep" periods. Launcher activity is constantly blue.
I use the modified launcher with the extended settings. Only widget on it is fancy widget pro.
Going to see how well the phone fairs for the rest of the day.
EDIT:
Been doing research, apparently telocation causes a lot of battery drain, and alarm manager (although mine is almost always asleep).
I recently uninstalled fancy widget in hopes that launcher won't keep itself awake, and froze the telocation and no freeze or force close on anything.
I had a major battery issue with my last install of CM7 on a new G2X, what fixed it for me was enabling "use wireless networks" in location and security settings. I noticed something was odd when I ran speedtest and every time it would try to connect to servers in NY or NJ(I live in NC).....I'm not exactly sure what was going on, but enabling it fixed my battery life.

annoying battery life issue

Hi folks,
since some days my battery drives me crazy...
Last week i flashed CM10 by nk111. Nice ROM, but my battery lasted only for some hours with normal usage. So I went back to MIUI...problem stayed.
Yesterday I flashed Jellytime and replaced the battery. The problem stayed as well. At 6 pm battery was full, I restored my apps with Titanium, used it a bit and when I was going to bed at 10 p.m. battery was 81%. Getting up at 5:30 this morning --> battery was 41%.
After the battery was full yesterday night I used display for maybe 10 minutes, why there are 36% battery usage by th display?
WTF happened to my system by flashing CM10 by nk111???
Any help is appreciated!

First, do you have Google now on. It really drains the battery. If that doesn't help install better battery stats and let it go through a couple of cycles, it will help you pinpoint if any apps or wakelocks are draining your battery.

app called carat could also help you find the battery sucking thing. It's a bit more simple than battery stats, you'll like it if you're not an expert.
it doesn't need to be a new app that is sucking power, it could be the poorly made update of some app that you're using for a long time.
I installed both apps.
But in both I can't find any kind of statistics about consumed power by apps or something similar, am I that stupid?

IT IS something to worry, cause battery behaviour changed dramatically while I didn't change my usage of the phone.
40% battery loss over night should be a clear indication of abnormal behaviour.

But - the 'Media' entry in the android accu stats is gone, I think this is a partial success.
In the BBS app, there is no remarkable value - the biggest is 3,8%.
When I watch the graphs - WiFi and Awake is nearly completetly blue over the whole night (unfortunately, I can't take screenshots right now for any reason).
I'm a bit helpless right now, will charge the phone now and keep an eye on BBS the next hours/days.
androidmediascanner shouldn't be the bad guy, it's a system app that we all have. maybe your battery is the problem...

I inserted a new battery last week without any change. Don't think both batteries are broken.
The common way to solve this is to do a fresh install. Leave it for a day without any apps yo see if it is ROM related. See if the battery life improve. Install one app per day and monitor your phone awake period with screen on, it should be almost same.

Yesterday night I made a full wipe, installed Jellytime and Gapps and went to sleep...
In the morning --> 67%.
Very odd, normally this would probably indicating a defect battery, but it is new!
Maybe a hardware defect?
Maybe RRU Problem?
Hi,
I have a similar problem here. I was using the desire s for a long timne with stock rom (2.x android), a full battery was enough for ~2 days. Then I rooted the device and installed CM10 (NK111 alpha build).
2 things changed:
The battery is empty after 24h or less.
The wireless network is worse than before. This is my subjective impression but there are places at home or in the office where wifi worked before and stopped working.
I'm starting excessive tests (disabling everything, removing apps, running carat) during xmas holidays to find the reason.
My guess what it might be: to root the device I did a downgrade, including a radio downgrade. Now I run baseband 20.23.30.0802U_38.02.01.11 which is known as "Saga Test RUU" and has the lowest version number of the RRUs listed in the forum. I did not found anything about this in the forum or with google but maybe this is the reason.
My average battery stats with normal use (whole day, used the phone a few minutes):
~30% Display
~25% Wifi
~17% Mobile Standby
~5% Android Os
For comparison, my Motorola Defy has in a similar scenario ~5% Wifi and ~3% Mobile Standby
