Google maps running in the background - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I like to use Google latitude so I have it enabled but I have it set manual so that it doesn't update my location automatically. But for some reason maps is running in the background and using gps. Even with latitude enabled, maps is not supposed to use gps in the background. What could be causing maps to use gps in the background?
Using better battery stats, SignalCollector.ScannerThread is what is activating maps. Anyone know what that is?

I use Autostarts to prevent stuff from running on its own. The way I have it set up, literally nothing runs on my phone without my say so. Keeps the RAM free and helps with battery life.

Looks like a great program btw. Just got it but i see multiple instances of things started. Eg. I see mail 4 times. How do i know which one to stop?
Tried it and disabled maps, but after reboot still comes back

I've never been able to stop maps. Damn thing is always running.

I don't mind if it is open and just sitting being idle. What I care about is it using gps while it is in the background when it shouldn't be for any reason

Maps being always on is bugging me too. When I look at battery usage I almost always see something similar to the Screen using 43% and Maps using 25% of the battery with everything else only 2%-10%. Holy hell! Why the heck is Maps eating up a quarter of my battery life?

So either be annoyed one way or annoyed another? You'd think the phone would kill the Maps app since it's not even being used yet it's using a lot of battery. I don't remember my Captivate constantly running the Maps app unless I actually opened it.
I wonder if it's the weather/clock widget on the home screen. You'd think that would only periodically check GPS location for the weather. And you'd also think that it was possible to get location without using Maps.

I need to do bit research before I can answer your question in depth. But one quick solution you can you "tasker" to configure when to use maps

Actually if you open a map app then only it will consume battery , you can close the app later. If you using navigation like app best is use "backitude " it will consume less battery then navigation

It can, and does (get location without Maps). AFAIK, GPS isn't used to update that location, its based on info from cell network and WiFi network.

I'm on an AT&T Galaxy S3, but am having the same issue. Maps is always using 10-15% of my battery. BBS reports SignalCollector.ScannerThread as the top wakelock. When I look at my battery I see repeated use of the GPS when I haven't actually initialized it.
Anyways, the suggestions to turn off GPS or use tasker to automate the process seem like bandaids. It would be nice to understand first what the problem or 'feature' actually is.
I'm fairly new to android, but I'm frustrated that I can't restrict apps from location services.
Also to clarify, I don't use Lattitude and attempted to turn off all location based services.

Hi,
You should try to run google maps, go to its cache settings and clear the "map tile cache". That fixed my issue of maps always running in the background. Mine wasn't using GPS, I've set it to only detect my location when I am connected to a wireless network.
Hope it helps.

Let's not reactivate threads that have been dead for 3 months...

I've also witnessed a huge increase in battery consumption with the latest version(s), about half the power is consumed in Maps. Killing it doesn't last, it's launched again in background.
After a few tests, this seems to do the trick (with Maps 6.14.1 on JB 4.1.2):
In Settings / Location settings, uncheck "Report from this device".
Make also sure to disable this stupid Google Now gadget (a real battery killer, not to mention the privacy issues - I'm not keen on providing Google with my private life data, who knows to what purpose they're collecting that!).

Why not? People are told not to create new threads, and search, but if they search and find a thread that relates to their issue they are told not to 'reactivate' a dead thread.
So in order for LePunk to keep you happy he is not to create a new thread, but to search for any past threads related to his subject. Once he finds a related thread he must not DARE post there as it will 'reactivate' a dead thread. So how was LePunk supposed to post his very helpful information? Get over yourself.
I am thankful for LePunks post in a supposed dead thread as it helped with an issue I was having.
Also, notice that LePunk has one and only post. He went out of his way to join XDA because he felt he had some information that may be helpful to someone and the response he gets is you crying. He has not posted since. Great way to introduce a new member to the forums!

Having the same issue myself. This shouldn't be the case even when location services are enabled.

you reactivated a dead with nothing to say about the issue, but i have no problems with reactivating dead threads with good input.
i purchased autostarts myself it is a good app, i rarely use it but it will let you control every aspect of apps starting. it loads everything at start so just wait for it to finish, i should install it more often to control maps but i flash roms too often to remember.

I'd like to add SWM-C to the list. I have no idea what it does, but I didn't need it running, so I trashed it.
You can also add "Tmobile Name ID" to the list if you don't use or want T-Mobile's for-pay Caller ID service.
ECID.apk is T-Mobile name id.

Also, i've removed the genius app and had no troubles with the system running fine.

Much appreciated. Wasn't sure what dockpanel was, and hadn't gotten to axing that one yet in testing.
I guess that means i'm stuck with latitude, since I need Google Maps, but since carhome isn't "supposed" to work with our device according to Google, once it's gone it's toast.
I mentioned earlier that I un-installed the Genius app, tossing carhome gets rid of the rest of that silly talk stuff I can't stand. It's a danged touch device for a reason...lol.
I realize different things work for different people - my buddy loves the talking to it to make it do stuff, just not my thing.
But I need Maps because the feature of emailing places to people has become invaluable in a business sense for me.
We all use Maps, and as people need to be places we just email locations back and forth - someone simply clicks the link in their email and it plots it on the map, and then Navigation automatically computes driving directions.
Auto-sync with email notifies of the new location ready to be input, and you can share the location right from starting in the Maps app itself. When a person gets a new location to go to, they send that and their current to payroll - and their mileage is logged and compensation is computed before they even get to where they are going.
Score a point for Google making my work life much, much easier, and streamlining taxes and payroll.
Edit - i'm the guy I linked you to - another lol.
That thread was a group effort we undertook here to find out what all you could get rid of and still have the system run right. On my working install I use in my day-to-day on the phone, I have a lot of the apps I mentioned were safe to remove in the thread I linked to.
When we first got root on these phones, the day revolutionary was released, it was an all-out delete-fest to figure out what could be safely removed. Some people went ahead and froze things, others went ahead and just uninstalled them. By comparing notes and tinkering with it, we figured out most of what we could toss safely.
Like I said, I use some of the things mentioned to be deleted - but the focus of the thread was what could be removed, and not what personal preferences were.
When i'm doing all my GPS / A-GPS testing, for instance, I restore to my original CWM backup I made right after root and do all my testing with all the stock apps installed. I don't want to contaminate any of the tests by running a custom tweaked install, the only thing i'm trying to tweak in that instance is the GPS stuff i'm working with at the moment. I'm also trying to replicate the environment someone will be in out-of-the-box (or as close as can be since the phone is rooted with CWM installed).
Don't think that I run my phone on the daily with nothing on it - that would be silly and kinda pointless to have a smart phone that didn't do anything. But in the interest of discovery, you kinda have to go beyond what you're happy with to figure it all out. (or at least that makes the most sense to me)
Having tested software for a living for a while...just the habits I got into. Another reason why I go so overboard on backups. You should see all the CWM backups I have stored of this phone in different states.
Just wanted to clear up any confusion, in case you thought I was crazy about trying to rip everything out of the phone indiscriminately - there is a method to the madness (...or is it a madness to the method? Can never tell... )
The things listed that you can delete in the other thread are a pick-and-choose option, you don't have to remove them all.
Using ES File Explorer...
Can't seem to delete anything .... says that it can't be deleted.
Do we need to be S-Off first?
If so, how do we S-Off for Mac users?
There isn't too much clear detailed info for Mac users...frustrating..

There is no Mac version of the Revolutionary S-OFF method. You either have to (A) install Linux, configure it properly and run the Linux version of Revolutionary or (B) install Windows, configure it properly and run the Windows version of Revolutionary.
Your only other option is to wait patiently for HTC to provide a bootloader unlocker for this device which may or may not ever happen. They've released it for the T-Mobile Sensation, but that's a pure HTC phone and not a T-Mobile-branded myTouch model.
I've used Revolutionary on Windows and Linux and both methods are fairly straightforward. You just need to know what you're doing -- if you don't, you probably shouldn't be trying to attain S-OFF in the first place. Just use the permanent temp-root.

In another thread here, someone also found out that by un-installing the stock Google maps version, then re-downloading it from the market, you solve the problem of it running in the background all the time. Check the battery threads to find the specific posting, I forget which one it was in.
Glad to see we are coming up with all the little details here, everyone has a different approach to solving the problems we come across on this phone. Everyone sharing what they know here is starting to paint a pretty good picture of the whole situation - good job everyone!
(Yep, I know car home works on the device, but once you remove it you won't be able to re-download it from the market because Google has it listed as not working for this phone, so it will block the download - thanks for confirming from another phone that it is indeed working though.)

[Q] Solution for GPS Issues in Galaxy S 4G?

Hi,
Has anyone been able to successfully solve the GPS issue on GS4G? I was able to get into lbstest mode when on Froyo and was able to get a lock in about 2 minutes, but since the time I have upgraded to 2.3.6 official, there has been not one instance where I have been able to get a lock by opening up Gogle maps(not even after like 20 minutes!).
I have tried the app GPS Status &Toolbox which seems to be the only thing that was able to give me a lock but it takes about 15 minutes for the first lock.
Has anybody been able to find a suitable solution to fix the GPS issue on GS4G? If so please share, I am sure it will be extremely helpful to countless users like me!
PS: I really do not want to install a new ROM or anything but want to know if there are ways of fixing the GPS issues with on the stock 2.3.6.
BTW, I have root access.
Please help.
Thanks,
Rakshith
If you are rooted, you can dl super manager from the market. Open in and go to the apk manager. Find the lbstestmode.apk, click on activities and then in the first description, click the "create short cut" and it will place a shortcut on your home screen. Then open the shortcut navigate to supl settings and change the server to supl.google.com. Oh, and don't forget to rip lbstestmode.apk out of an old ROM before you do this...

Hmm, I don't know. Did you find the thread regarding wiping out a couple of xml files? I'd link you but cannot sesrch @ the moment.
Also GPS Aids has a hard reset function thst might help. Fair warning - it will completely reset your phone so you will lose data, appd, and settings. Make a backup first!

-Download and Install angrygps on your phone from above
-Create shortcut on homescreen (add > shortcut > activities > angrygps> ...angrygps)
-Run and click tracking test
-Let it run till the accuracy gets under 10m (it will get multiple satelite lockons)
-Your GPS should now lock fairly quickly from now on
This was taken from this thread BUT the CWM flashable zip never worked for me, so i just stripped AngryGPS out and installed it manually. The file at the top link is the AngryGPS.apk that i stripped from the CWM zip.

EDIT: Supposedly this program used to be included in certain roms, so you may already have it. I think it should be included simply because it seems to work for people to get their GPS going AND its only 106kb, so I don't think people would mind the extra room it takes up
Download Valhalla Black Final. Raver's got a custom GPS driver in it. Trust me, it works well. haven't had issues with GPS since I've used it.

He told me a few months ago when he made it that the GPS would lock in seconds. I didn't believe him at ALL (the default GPS driver on our phone is pretty crappy) then I finally got around to testing it and I couldn't believe how fast it locked. =|. Haven't really used others' ROMs in a while so I forget that the default GPS is pretty damn crappy.
Just wanted to mention that the GPS is working extremely well for me also since migrating to Valhalla Black...and that's after trying many apps, patches and hair pulling since getting the SGS4G a year ago.
Kudos to the crew for their most excellent dev work, keep it up!
GPS works fine for me on octane 3.0.
Of course I never had GPS problems even when completely stock.

There are many threads out there on how to pull and push apps from other ROMs, just search for them. Yes this did fix the issue. When you are in lbstestmode, hit the get position test button and let the phone set for a few minutes. After that, you shouldn't have much wait time to get a lock.

Aside from this, here's another way of using AngryGPS. This will install the system app with an app menu icon.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15721652&postcount=13
This has the same file, just not modded.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15695743&postcount=6288
In both cases a phone reboot is ideal, though not really necessary with the modded one. Both work the same and didn't require anything else outside of stock.
There are a lot of threads on this subject for many of the Galaxy S models by Samsung, and each model varies. The system application to test and change settings on the SGS4G (and probably the Vibrant) changes between stock Froyo and stock Gingerbread.
On Froyo (VUVKB5), the application, called LbsTestMode, is ready and easy to access with the Samsung system code: *#*#3214789650#*#*
On the 3 Gingerbread (VUVKJ6) phones I tested, the same code, along with trying out a few others didn't bring up anything. So I installed the AngryGPS (new name in 2.3) files linked above, allowing me to use the system code (or app menu if you installed the mod version) to access it.
You can also look at this simple hardware fix too:

And if it does, what has worked out as the best way to configure it? I had it working when I was on build 40, but it would always revert to it's old behavior of not locking if I rebooted or turned off GPS or even exited AngryGPS.

Nexus S and Google Now

I opened this thread because I did not find any relevant information about google now in the other threads.
I realized that Google Now in Nexus S does not have the same answers with cards, as in the Galaxy Nexus.
Do you know why? have you noticed other differences?
Make sure you have "Search on Google.com" enabled in Google now ->Settings -> Privacy and Accounts, since the Knowledge graph which powers it is more or less limited to Google.com at the moment.
My problem with Google Now is limited to voice search. Besides the ocassional slow start up, it seems the graphics/UI/animation have trouble keeping up with the audio (chime, audio input, audio output), which hurts when it activates a voice action but you can't see the card to check if it's right or not. Does everybody else get this?
I already have google.com enable but I was never able to get any card.
I tried several examples that work with GNexus
Did you get a card using voice search?
In my Nexus S I also noticed the slow start up.
Does anyone know if it's possible to make a home screen shortcut to google now? I use ADW EX for a launcher and it doesn't have the option yet in the Swipe Up setting to launch google now, but if there's a way to make a shortcut, you can set swipe up to launch an app or shortcut.
Also, I can't seem to setup the sports cards. I follow Formula 1 in the summer, but also NBA summer leagues, but I can't setup the sports cards to give me any information at all on these things.

No need, in Jelly Bean the Search button is permanently mapped to Google now system wide (you can't use it for app specific search anymore). If you still want a shortcut, just make a shortcut to the Google app. Google app = Google now.
So...egg on my face. Hit the "search" capacitive button and it went straight to google now. Embarrassed.
Now, about those sports teams....I read an article that teams you search for in Google are enabled in the "edit teams" option, which is currently greyed out for me. Anybody get this option enabled? I've tried many things and it's not working for me.

No need, in Jelly Bean the Search button is permanently mapped to Google now system wide (you can't use it for app specific search anymore). If you still want a shortcut, just make a shortcut to the Google app. Google app = Google now.

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788719
Enables you to use the search button and make a typing search instead of voice search, but the best part is the microphone in the widget still works if you want.
So click the search button brings typing even if voice is activated. 2 in 1
Enjoy

While in Google Now, hit the capacitive menu button, choose Settings, choose Google Now, and then customize each card category.
You have to set the phone to English as system language to get it working correctly. In Swedish or other languages it only does a voice search..

Summer leagues are not official, so they won't show up as cards. When the season starts cards will show up.
Its baseball season, so I get the daily schedule when I ask.

Hey I can't get any cards up other then the weather card. I don't know if it's just me but the voice searching/commands kinda suck. And there was another guy that said that his "edit teams" in the sports card section is grayed out, this is true with me also. Won't even let me click anything in any sport; anyone know how to fix that?
Is there also specific things you have to say for this woman to respond back to you with an answer? I was trying to tell "can you set an appointment for monday july 23th and 8:15am" and it would send me to google.com to get an appointment manager

well that cleared up alot for me lol... I was misunderstanding the entire concept behind google now... I know that it was a helpful tool to tell you traffic details and reminders and **** like that... But i thought it was a giant voice searching engine as well... But i guess it doesnt help at all when you dont have data  now you can ask "why the **** do you have an android with no data" LOL
Google Now is just another gimmick which I have turned off to try and help the terrible battery life.

Google Now - Working for me!

This maybe was discussed somewhere else, but I didn't see a thread on it so figured I'd start one.
I've installed Google Now on my rig running full stock (rooted) rom and it's running fine. I did get some network error messages at first, but I assumed it was a result of the permission requests it was tossing at me. Once I allowed the permissions, things seemed to work just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
FYI - Just read that to get the full benefit of google now you must have web history and location history enabled. It'll work without it, but won't provide its full benefit without it.
That said, I guess I won't really be using it much. A choice y'all will have to make. Here's the link:

Is voice working for you and did it break svoice when u double tap home? Thanks for the info
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Voice did not work for me.
Double tap of home gave you the option to choose s voice or search. I defaulted to search and when I double clicked home nothing happened.
I kept getting network errors even though I have both location and search history enabled. I could get weather and Olympic results quickly but when I searched for say "galaxy S3 news" it would sit there loading. I reverted back to stock search.
How to revert: uninstall velvet. Rename the apk for Google quick search. No reboot required.
My phone is verizon stock rooted with noxious ninjas script.
Voice didn't work for me either. One note: don't "install" velvet.apk, push it to system/app instead.
Also, for some reason it kept telling me units in SI instead of US. I reverted because I like voice search. Didn't try disabling the S Voice stuff which I saw may help.

There are several things that don't work for me.
As previously mentioned, voice searching is broken.
On my xoom the Google now app displays card such as weather, traffic, and sports scores when I open it without doing any searches. This function does not work.
Also, I get notifications from Google now on the xoom. The app is integrated in the os. None of this works on the s3.
Pretty much all you will get is a replacement of the current search app that will display cards for some results using text input only. It is not worth it to switch right now. If you are curious about how Google now works, just search for demo videos.

it's now fully functional (including voice). there's another post floating around with instructions.
thanks for sharing this! everything works fine!
Can someone point me in the direction of the fully working version? I installed yesterday and there were a bunch of problems.
Here's the "fully" working version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856
I say "fully" because at least for me, nothing relating to the calendar works. Doesn't see my existing appointments, can't add new ones. Voice search works fine.
So I got it installed on my Verizon S3.
I don't see a Now app in my drawer but do get it when I press the home screen mic button and can voice search and all of that works well. Set an alarm etc.
I don't see any cards though and I don't have google now settings in the google search app to change from metric etc. I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 online/offline. I didn't install anything else. Did I miss something?
Also double clicking the home button now brings up the voice dialer, how can that be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Cool, thanks. I am concerned that I don't get the settings to change from metric in the search app too.
I realize though I should be patient and wait for google to "award" me cards and then I might get the weather settings I am looking for.
Voice Dialer is messed up
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Where are my cards!

So I guess it's been 4 or 5 days since I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 and I still don't have any cards. I have been using Now daily to search for weather updates and sports scores from my main teams and no cards every show up when I open the app from the blue google icon. I have never seen anything in the app actually say Google Now, I just get the red mic to ask the question.
Did I miss something or maybe have a bad install? Any suggestions to try?

Figured my problem out. It was because I have a google apps (for business) account. I had to enable at settled in my domain management to permit google now for my users (aka me).
I then cleared the Google Search Apps data and cashe and reopened it and got the welcome to Google Now setup screen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1744793 is the thread I found that tipped me off to this once I thought about the fact I have an apps account and not a standard google account.

So do we just install the M7 apk or do we need to push it to system apps? Is that the only file we need to install? Any help appreciated. Want to try Clean Rom 2.5 but want to make sure I can get Google Now working first.

It depends on which recovery your using if it acts right with it...if you flash it and it dont show up then you have to manually install it which the instructions on how to do so is in that OP
Might be a questioned already answered. I just got my s3 a few days ago, but does google navigation work with google now. I installed the m7 online/offline version but it just sits there. Voice search, cards, everything else works but turn by turn navigation.:cyclops:

[APP]VIRGINMOBILE : MINUTES CHECKER apk FIXED

I Fixed this app because Jay Goel did not ! It is for all of us Virgin Mobile Users who like to keep tabs on the minutes used . Due to recent Changes by Virgin Mobile the app on the marketplace stopped working so i edited it with the proper log in information(changed www1 to www2 and it works perfectly again ! Pretty good for a person with little coding experience. I used apktool and then signed the compiled app . here it is and give me a thanks if you use it . Uninstall the broke one first !
I emailed Jay Goel several times but he did not respond or update his app so i did because i needed it .The only change i made was replaced WWW1 with WWW2 in WebsiteScraper.java then recompiled it with the easy instructions of apktool then used signapk and WALA ! Works 100% and i love to see mins used in a widget . Multiple account log ins all fixed by me .feb 20 2013
PLEASE UNINSTALL THE OLD VERSION BEFORE INSTALLING THE FIXED APK HERE. THANKS
Thanks so much! I was planning on doing just that when I got the time. I'm glad I procrastinated and let you do the heavy lifting.
The app doesn't seem to be reading the "Charged on" fields correctly. Any change you could mess around with that?
Thanks a ton!
My charged on field is showing the correct data. I have several accounts all on different days and it displays for example Charged on: Th/A/04
Set indicates Thursday, the 4th and on Automatic debit for next month April. A
Hope that helps..

Thanks for the reply. If you look at the pics on the play store, it looks like it should just be the date in mm/dd/yy format. I think it uses that to calculate how fast you are burning minutes and changes the color of the widget appropriately. It also uses that to make the black circle bar on the widget that represents the progress through the month.
These features aren't critical, so if you don't have the time to work on it, it's understandable. You have done us a great service fixing this app already!

Hi. No yes that was changed by another contributing developer. I like it this way it is as all the info in pie graphs plus widget s are accurate. I will update it again when the time comes it stops working again.. Enjoy

Amazing! I hinted my review over at the play store for folks to google for this
My charged on date isn't showing up either but that happened before even in the older versions. I actually wish someone could fork the project and add higher res widgets and implement the new code from the VM account that tracks the data limit usage. I know there are apps or ICS and up can track data usage but it's not accurate. With the new forked app you'd know exactly were you are in terms of data usage as VM sees it.
Happy to have this back though! :highfive:
Seems like "Virgin Mobile Minute Checker" author has not updated the app for a while. I contacted him with no success. Surprisingly, Virgin Mobile themselves also does not offer any app.
Ultimately, I have started working on my own version. It is in google's play store under name "Virgin Mobile Minutes" (it has "V" and "m" letters in logo). It is free for everyone to enjoy. It is missing a widget for now - I will add it soon.
I apoligize if that sounded like I am trying to advertise myself

Thanks for the fix. The old app stopped working a couple weeks ago when Virgin Mobile moved my account to their new system, and this update mostly works.
With this new version, my "Charged On:" field is blank, so the app doesn't know when my month starts/ends, and therefore, the green "days remaining" circle in the graphic and widget are missing: The graphics only show the red Minutes Used pie.
Please let me know if you need any additional info from me to help fix this issue (if you have time to fix it).
PS: I couldn't install this fixed version (it kept failing) until I uninstalled the old version.
PPS: I'm running CM7 on a Triumph, and plan to try Paranoid Android ICS in the near future.

Nice job. Just loaded it on my phone. The only think missing from me making this my primary app is that I can't monitor 2 or more (in my case, just 2) accounts. But, for now I'll just leave this set up to watch the other phone's usage while I use other apps to monitor my minutes.

Notice due dates do work for both for next billing. I am on auto pay so J for June and day we are due. This is a great app. Also shows two different wegdits pie graphs and transparent min used. Also shows min used during and after a call on dialer screen.

Do you still experience the issue? If so, please email (email should be available on google's play market) me and I can solve that.
The app was fixed as all can see the Charged on field is active using the file posted.
The app in the market itself is dead and outdated so I posted the patched file which works now including multiple accounts. I am also curious is the fellow with the charged on filed was resolved by my fix...

I added monitoring multiple accounts from inside the app and also you can assign a widget to specific account (if you have more than one account registered). See if you like it.
BTW, if you have any comments please email me directly since I do not visit forums that often.
