Nexus S and Google Now - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I opened this thread because I did not find any relevant information about google now in the other threads.
I realized that Google Now in Nexus S does not have the same answers with cards, as in the Galaxy Nexus.
Do you know why? have you noticed other differences?

Make sure you have "Search on Google.com" enabled in Google now ->Settings -> Privacy and Accounts, since the Knowledge graph which powers it is more or less limited to Google.com at the moment.
My problem with Google Now is limited to voice search. Besides the ocassional slow start up, it seems the graphics/UI/animation have trouble keeping up with the audio (chime, audio input, audio output), which hurts when it activates a voice action but you can't see the card to check if it's right or not. Does everybody else get this?

I already have google.com enable but I was never able to get any card.
I tried several examples that work with GNexus
Did you get a card using voice search?
In my Nexus S I also noticed the slow start up.

Does anyone know if it's possible to make a home screen shortcut to google now? I use ADW EX for a launcher and it doesn't have the option yet in the Swipe Up setting to launch google now, but if there's a way to make a shortcut, you can set swipe up to launch an app or shortcut.
Also, I can't seem to setup the sports cards. I follow Formula 1 in the summer, but also NBA summer leagues, but I can't setup the sports cards to give me any information at all on these things.

No need, in Jelly Bean the Search button is permanently mapped to Google now system wide (you can't use it for app specific search anymore). If you still want a shortcut, just make a shortcut to the Google app. Google app = Google now.

So...egg on my face. Hit the "search" capacitive button and it went straight to google now. Embarrassed.
Now, about those sports teams....I read an article that teams you search for in Google are enabled in the "edit teams" option, which is currently greyed out for me. Anybody get this option enabled? I've tried many things and it's not working for me.

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788719
Enables you to use the search button and make a typing search instead of voice search, but the best part is the microphone in the widget still works if you want.
So click the search button brings typing even if voice is activated. 2 in 1
Enjoy

While in Google Now, hit the capacitive menu button, choose Settings, choose Google Now, and then customize each card category.

You have to set the phone to English as system language to get it working correctly. In Swedish or other languages it only does a voice search..

Summer leagues are not official, so they won't show up as cards. When the season starts cards will show up.
Its baseball season, so I get the daily schedule when I ask.

Hey I can't get any cards up other then the weather card. I don't know if it's just me but the voice searching/commands kinda suck. And there was another guy that said that his "edit teams" in the sports card section is grayed out, this is true with me also. Won't even let me click anything in any sport; anyone know how to fix that?
Is there also specific things you have to say for this woman to respond back to you with an answer? I was trying to tell "can you set an appointment for monday july 23th and 8:15am" and it would send me to google.com to get an appointment manager

^ it's not a voice assistant like siri. It responds to who what and some when questions.

well that cleared up alot for me lol... I was misunderstanding the entire concept behind google now... I know that it was a helpful tool to tell you traffic details and reminders and **** like that... But i thought it was a giant voice searching engine as well... But i guess it doesnt help at all when you dont have data  now you can ask "why the **** do you have an android with no data" LOL

Google Now is just another gimmick which I have turned off to try and help the terrible battery life.

Google Now - Working for me!

This maybe was discussed somewhere else, but I didn't see a thread on it so figured I'd start one.
I've installed Google Now on my rig running full stock (rooted) rom and it's running fine. I did get some network error messages at first, but I assumed it was a result of the permission requests it was tossing at me. Once I allowed the permissions, things seemed to work just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
FYI - Just read that to get the full benefit of google now you must have web history and location history enabled. It'll work without it, but won't provide its full benefit without it.
That said, I guess I won't really be using it much. A choice y'all will have to make. Here's the link:

Is voice working for you and did it break svoice when u double tap home? Thanks for the info
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Voice did not work for me.
Double tap of home gave you the option to choose s voice or search. I defaulted to search and when I double clicked home nothing happened.
I kept getting network errors even though I have both location and search history enabled. I could get weather and Olympic results quickly but when I searched for say "galaxy S3 news" it would sit there loading. I reverted back to stock search.
How to revert: uninstall velvet. Rename the apk for Google quick search. No reboot required.
My phone is verizon stock rooted with noxious ninjas script.
Voice didn't work for me either. One note: don't "install" velvet.apk, push it to system/app instead.
Also, for some reason it kept telling me units in SI instead of US. I reverted because I like voice search. Didn't try disabling the S Voice stuff which I saw may help.

There are several things that don't work for me.
As previously mentioned, voice searching is broken.
On my xoom the Google now app displays card such as weather, traffic, and sports scores when I open it without doing any searches. This function does not work.
Also, I get notifications from Google now on the xoom. The app is integrated in the os. None of this works on the s3.
Pretty much all you will get is a replacement of the current search app that will display cards for some results using text input only. It is not worth it to switch right now. If you are curious about how Google now works, just search for demo videos.

it's now fully functional (including voice). there's another post floating around with instructions.
thanks for sharing this! everything works fine!
Can someone point me in the direction of the fully working version? I installed yesterday and there were a bunch of problems.
Here's the "fully" working version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856
I say "fully" because at least for me, nothing relating to the calendar works. Doesn't see my existing appointments, can't add new ones. Voice search works fine.
So I got it installed on my Verizon S3.
I don't see a Now app in my drawer but do get it when I press the home screen mic button and can voice search and all of that works well. Set an alarm etc.
I don't see any cards though and I don't have google now settings in the google search app to change from metric etc. I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 online/offline. I didn't install anything else. Did I miss something?
Also double clicking the home button now brings up the voice dialer, how can that be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Cool, thanks. I am concerned that I don't get the settings to change from metric in the search app too.
I realize though I should be patient and wait for google to "award" me cards and then I might get the weather settings I am looking for.
Voice Dialer is messed up
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Where are my cards!

So I guess it's been 4 or 5 days since I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 and I still don't have any cards. I have been using Now daily to search for weather updates and sports scores from my main teams and no cards every show up when I open the app from the blue google icon. I have never seen anything in the app actually say Google Now, I just get the red mic to ask the question.
Did I miss something or maybe have a bad install? Any suggestions to try?

Figured my problem out. It was because I have a google apps (for business) account. I had to enable at settled in my domain management to permit google now for my users (aka me).
I then cleared the Google Search Apps data and cashe and reopened it and got the welcome to Google Now setup screen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1744793 is the thread I found that tipped me off to this once I thought about the fact I have an apps account and not a standard google account.

It depends on which recovery your using if it acts right with it...if you flash it and it dont show up then you have to manually install it which the instructions on how to do so is in that OP
Might be a questioned already answered. I just got my s3 a few days ago, but does google navigation work with google now. I installed the m7 online/offline version but it just sits there. Voice search, cards, everything else works but turn by turn navigation.:cyclops:

S Voice Sucks...other options pls

Played with S Voice for 2-hours and still no real good continuous success. I have an exchange account so phone locks with pin S voice does not wake properly in this manner...
With my old HTC if the phone was pin locked and off I could hit my BT button and say "Call Home" and it would dial and connect. With S Voice it tries but with the screen pin locked it just fails.... 1 out of 10 tries I might get the bell so I can say my command...and wake function does not let you say a command to wake deviec with BT headset on/active...
What other voice dialing app can I use to replace S Voice?
Vlingo is pretty good at dialing and texting especially hands free ( in car mode). This phone REALLY should of had google search/google voice when it was introduced. I know JB wasn't officially released yet when it was launched. Samsung should really update to JB and incorperate google voice if it wants to compete with the Iphone 5.

I couldn't get S Voice to work consistently with my BT. I found the voice dialer.apk from an ICS rom and installed it on my phone. It works great for voice dialing.
EVA or AVX
I have AVX on my phone - it's the most fully-featured of any voice app. It's not good at answering general knowledge questions (it's not for that), but it rocks at controlling every aspect of your phone via voice. Can even interact with Tasker! And it supports texting via Google Voice which I use. Also AVX's younger sister EVA which is the exact same app, but different GUI and cheaper - all the same functionality though. Do a youtube search for AVX on Galaxy S3.
I've used S-Voice, Vlingo, Iris, and a few others. My personal favorite is SpeakToIt Assistant found in the play store.
However, one thing I do like about S-Voice is the Wolfram Alpha integration.

Robin in the app store is great. I believe it will be the closest siri competitor. It offers a variety of ways to control your phone through voice and gives quirky answers to a variety of questions.
As far as I can tell, SpeakToIt doesn't support bluetooth - Speaktoit doesn't listen to the bluetooth device's mic.and
Speaktoit doesn't trigger with the bluetooth device's command.

I simply took the google widget and resized it smaller so all you see is a bit more then the microphone icon.
I just press that and it works like a charm. (I use Go Launcher so I don't know if this works on the standard launcher) .
You get used to this pretty quickly.

I like s-voice too. I think that the people who think it sucks are simply expecting too much from it.
This whole siri/s-voice/Google now is still a new mobile technology and people really shouldn't have such high expectations from it so early on...
While Google Now is still an evolving technology, I've been impressed with how fast the recognition has become in the latest release. I look forward to the next iteration.

Voice Dialer is messed up
I originally posted this in the Apps forum; but it is probably more appropriate here:

When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Are you having issues with having GN send text to contacts or sending "note to self"? I am having issue with both. I tried to do the work around using Calendar as a contact and then having GN send a sms to it so that it will post but most of the time it ends up doing a google search on "text calendar....ect". "note to self..." gives me a black screen and then an FC shortly after. I'm using the M6 zip file.

I sending a text message is hit or miss i guess, however i never got it to actually do it for me automatically. if i say "text mike hey whats up" it will pull up mike (sometimes/not consistently) and have my message "hey whats up" ready for sending but i have to actually go again and finalize the send. It's not like with S voice or Vlingo where it will send it for you if there is high confidence or if you tell it to send. I guess we'll just have to wait until proper version of Jellybean come out for our phones (GS3 VZW in my case). Till then we'll just have to deal with not so perfect Google Now.

Should be able to go into the applications and clear the cache for Google search/voice - so when you double click home it will ask which you want to use? not 100% sure, but usually that's how you reset options like that.

Should just be the Google search one, if you haven't already tried that one. also, check the original threat I posted i belive they have an "uninstall" option? that would be the only other option i can think of. I don't use voice dial. sorry.
So to install this, you just need to download the zip file and flash in recovery? I read through the other link and its seems confusing. I'm not sure if I need 6 or 7. And the warning stated if I don't know what one I need I shouldn't be attempting it. So I'm nervous.
Do the mikey7 version. To get offline and online dload the biggest file. On an s3 you should be Ok doing the big file. Just download put on root of your sd card and on recovery flash the zip file. I've been using it but I don't use the cards to save battery. I just use the voice search. It's much better than s voice or the voice search of ics. Check on howbibused home2shortcut to assign it to the home button by clicking my name to see my posts. You will enjoy it.

The main reason for is that the default option uses the us voice, which is strange as I have gone through google search, google now and many other options and they all say uk which actually from me playing around really does make the difference in voice recognition to me personally, also its soooo frickin slow to call someone on voice dialler compared to google now.

You can try using this to activate Google Now instead of the voice dialer.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kin.bluetooth_launch
Open the app, scroll down to Google Search, click it, then choose the 3rd option com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.VoiceSearchActivity, launch the voice dialer and you'll get an option to choose Bluetooth Launch as the default, choose that....PROFIT!!!!
Hope this helps.
disable voicedial.apk or remove it works just fine for me.

cheers all the blutooth app worked
I just wrote a simple app (improved over Bluetooth Launch for this purpose, I think). I describe it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/bt-activate-google-voice-dialer-t3012622

Looking for a quick memo app

My previous phone was the lg options g and the one thing I loved was LG's quick memo. Is there any chance of getting it ported to the nexus 5 or is there something similar?
Sorry if this has already been done or asked, but my search came up empty.
Thanks

"Ink over apps" does the same thing sort of. It let's you write on the current screen. It's a paid app though... only one I've seen of its kind in the Google store.

Look no further than google keep. sync across devices, store photos notes etc , even use voice to dictate a meme, I find it invaluable and easier to use than evernote.

Google Keep is amazing. Quick, easy, simple, and it works. Easy to set reminders too.
I already use Google keep. However, lg quick memo works differently than that. It allows you to write over your background. For example, if I get a call from a number I don't know, I would go to call history, enter quick memo to write the number on the screen. Then tap a button which allows me to browse the phone while that number stays on the screen so I can search that number without trying to remember it or write it on paper. Its all right in front of you. Obviously there is more uses for it than that.
I still have my rooted lg optimus g so I can pull the all from there. Not sure if that will work though.

I imagine you could set this up with Tasker. Take a screenshot which triggers it to be edited with a simple image editor, draw and save. Maybe assign it all to up+power instead of down.
