I am not responsible for anything that you choose to do to your device. This is just a guide nothing more. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I am just dumb founded by the amount of bull sh*t in the stock Rom. The amount of bloatware in this should be against the law. I will tell you this much. Once i removed this junk my phone is much snappier. Have fun with it guys. Always do a nandroid before removing anything.

I'd like to add SWM-C to the list. I have no idea what it does, but I didn't need it running, so I trashed it.
You can also add "Tmobile Name ID" to the list if you don't use or want T-Mobile's for-pay Caller ID service.

ECID.apk is T-Mobile name id.

Root explorer, ES File Mgr, or System app remover. All apps in the Android market.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using xda premium

While we're at it, you can look Here to see some others that have been found to be safe to remove.
I personally keep some of the ones on both of these threads, but that doesn't mean they can't be removed.
Also, i've removed the genius app and had no troubles with the system running fine.
Can someone teach me how to remove latitude and car home, while keeping maps?

Car home is dockpanel.apk.

Latitude is Maps.apk.

This list I made does not affect the full functionality of the stock ROM. You can remove other stuff BUT you WILL get FCs to vital system files. Stick with this list. I'm much more conservative then that guy you linked me to. But I will add dockpanel.apk. thanx

Much appreciated. Wasn't sure what dockpanel was, and hadn't gotten to axing that one yet in testing.
I guess that means i'm stuck with latitude, since I need Google Maps, but since carhome isn't "supposed" to work with our device according to Google, once it's gone it's toast.
I mentioned earlier that I un-installed the Genius app, tossing carhome gets rid of the rest of that silly talk stuff I can't stand. It's a danged touch device for a reason...lol.
I realize different things work for different people - my buddy loves the talking to it to make it do stuff, just not my thing.
But I need Maps because the feature of emailing places to people has become invaluable in a business sense for me.
We all use Maps, and as people need to be places we just email locations back and forth - someone simply clicks the link in their email and it plots it on the map, and then Navigation automatically computes driving directions.
Auto-sync with email notifies of the new location ready to be input, and you can share the location right from starting in the Maps app itself. When a person gets a new location to go to, they send that and their current to payroll - and their mileage is logged and compensation is computed before they even get to where they are going.
Score a point for Google making my work life much, much easier, and streamlining taxes and payroll.
Edit - i'm the guy I linked you to - another lol.
That thread was a group effort we undertook here to find out what all you could get rid of and still have the system run right. On my working install I use in my day-to-day on the phone, I have a lot of the apps I mentioned were safe to remove in the thread I linked to.
When we first got root on these phones, the day revolutionary was released, it was an all-out delete-fest to figure out what could be safely removed. Some people went ahead and froze things, others went ahead and just uninstalled them. By comparing notes and tinkering with it, we figured out most of what we could toss safely.
Like I said, I use some of the things mentioned to be deleted - but the focus of the thread was what could be removed, and not what personal preferences were.
When i'm doing all my GPS / A-GPS testing, for instance, I restore to my original CWM backup I made right after root and do all my testing with all the stock apps installed. I don't want to contaminate any of the tests by running a custom tweaked install, the only thing i'm trying to tweak in that instance is the GPS stuff i'm working with at the moment. I'm also trying to replicate the environment someone will be in out-of-the-box (or as close as can be since the phone is rooted with CWM installed).
Don't think that I run my phone on the daily with nothing on it - that would be silly and kinda pointless to have a smart phone that didn't do anything. But in the interest of discovery, you kinda have to go beyond what you're happy with to figure it all out. (or at least that makes the most sense to me)
Having tested software for a living for a while...just the habits I got into. Another reason why I go so overboard on backups. You should see all the CWM backups I have stored of this phone in different states.
Just wanted to clear up any confusion, in case you thought I was crazy about trying to rip everything out of the phone indiscriminately - there is a method to the madness (...or is it a madness to the method? Can never tell... )
The things listed that you can delete in the other thread are a pick-and-choose option, you don't have to remove them all.

Using ES File Explorer...
Can't seem to delete anything .... says that it can't be deleted.
Do we need to be S-Off first?
If so, how do we S-Off for Mac users?
There isn't too much clear detailed info for Mac users...frustrating..

There is no Mac version of the Revolutionary S-OFF method. You either have to (A) install Linux, configure it properly and run the Linux version of Revolutionary or (B) install Windows, configure it properly and run the Windows version of Revolutionary.
Your only other option is to wait patiently for HTC to provide a bootloader unlocker for this device which may or may not ever happen. They've released it for the T-Mobile Sensation, but that's a pure HTC phone and not a T-Mobile-branded myTouch model.
I've used Revolutionary on Windows and Linux and both methods are fairly straightforward. You just need to know what you're doing -- if you don't, you probably shouldn't be trying to attain S-OFF in the first place. Just use the permanent temp-root.

maps keeps automatically running in the background of my gf's phone. Is there anyway to stop it from autostarting? I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it as noted in another post elsewhere in this forum.
Thanks.

dockpanel.apk is htcs version of Google's car home. And yes Google's car home works fine on our device. I'm running it with no major issues. I updated op accordingly.

Yes go into settings......applications......running services........find maps.apk.......press it.........then press force stop.......then press clear data. You will need to do this each time with Google maps. It is a battery leech if it runs in the background. Hope this helps

In another thread here, someone also found out that by un-installing the stock Google maps version, then re-downloading it from the market, you solve the problem of it running in the background all the time. Check the battery threads to find the specific posting, I forget which one it was in.
Glad to see we are coming up with all the little details here, everyone has a different approach to solving the problems we come across on this phone. Everyone sharing what they know here is starting to paint a pretty good picture of the whole situation - good job everyone!
(Yep, I know car home works on the device, but once you remove it you won't be able to re-download it from the market because Google has it listed as not working for this phone, so it will block the download - thanks for confirming from another phone that it is indeed working though.)

Exactly.
I'm still trying to break this phone wide open.

[Q] Creating an app to...

Due to switching roms constantly and data wiping (i always like to start fresh, even without switching roms sometimes) there is always a lot to add back, some things which are tedious
basically i want to know if it would be a hassle to make an app do this:
add all the settings to set up my email
set up passwords for wifi networks i use a lot (home networks)
and a big one, install a certificate and set up the wifi to use on campus
my background:
outside of Matlab and Mathematica i know nothing about programming (if you can even consider those real programming languages?)
ive been interested in learning to program, mainly to accomplish personal tasks like these
would this be too 'difficult' to go after and tackle, where to start?
would the google appcreater be able to do something like this?
thanks =D

android.process.media force close! FIX

I know some of you have been having problems with a force close message that looks like this: Android.process.media is not responding please force close or retry.
I have done search after search only to find one way that ultimately fixes this annoying every second force close message.
1. Make sure your phone is rooted.
2. Using a file explorer of your choice go into the directories as follows:
/system/app/
3. Delete this file from the menu, mediaprovider.apk
4. Force close messages will now stop. Horray!
If you have questions post them. I will do my best to answer.

i tried it on my G2 and it hasn't worked yet. Had to give ES FileExplorer root.
Have a great morning!

media.process force close issue rooted htc desire
I fixed this problem without any further issues by clearing the download cache - I'm just as surprised as you.
staplesdroid said:
Yea like I said you must have a rooted phone!!!. Did it work after you gave es file root?
Another great program in root explorer. You can get it from ww w. 4shared .co m
Go there type in rootexplorer .apk and it will have multiple downloads. Just pick one and run it.
You can get all the paid apps for free like that. Just type in .apk after the app you want is typed in for example: rootexplorer .apk or irunner .apk or androidbanking .apk..... you get the picture?

Or you could get it from the market, and pay for it, and support the developers. But if you want to be a thief, that's your decision.

+ 1, a one time payment of $4 for something useful is nothing.

why patronize piracy?
I live in Asia, where pirated software/apps are more prevalent than legit ones. That is because software like Microsoft Windows is economically out of reach for the man on the street.
But $3.99? Come on! We shouldn't expect devs to continue churning out useful code without getting paid for it. If the developers of Titanium Backup or Root Toolbox had decided early on that it wasn't worth it to develop apps for Android or WinMo, we'd all still be in the Dark Ages of the cellphone era. Making custom ROMs is not the same. For one, many of them were based on stock firmware--which were made by highly-paid software engineers at phone makers in the first place.
What the Android Market offers for free, I download for free. When it has a price and I need it, I pay for it. Simple as that.
1) the fix listed above worked perfectly for me. (HD2, gingerbread, CM7)
2) paying for an app is the right thing to do. free ones are preferred, of course. you know it, i know it, they know it. support open source, support the community. pay it forward.

Yep, this is actually a horrible fix. For me, it did nothing except stop me from accessing any of my media. So if you don't care about listening to music, viewing any photos, having ringtones, viewing video you have taken etc, this MIGHT work for you. I had to dig out the mediaprovider.apk from the .zip of my ROM and replace it.
I fixed mine by restoring my last Titanium Backup ("restore all apps with data"). Whatever was corrupted was restored back to working order. I understand that not everyone has Titanium Backup, but it has save my a$$ a couple of times now when an app or system file has started acting weird. Root your phone and get TB, it's so worth it.
EDIT: OK, so the problem came back after I replaced mediaprovider.apk, so apologies for that. I booted into recovery and did a factory/data reset, then restored my Titanium Backup, and all seems to be good now. Again, I understand this may not help everyone, but it worked for me, and it avoids deleting apk files without fully understanding what effect it will have.
Help

I had the same problem with my Asus transformer. In addition the default Music player did not work anymore as it used to (played the wrong numbers).
The above solution did not work for me (I could get to the files mentioned without rooting).
Sofar I got the problem solved as followed.
1. I found an new version 4 of the Music player (com.google.android.misic.4.0.9.apk) and installed this version
2. This by itself did not solve anything, but now I could reinstall the factory original version and now everything is OK.
No forced closing anymore and the default player works as before
I hope it stays this way.

Android Market "hidden in menus" is working

after (how long? a year or so) the "hidden in menus" feature of the Android Market, used to hide old phones from the install list, seems to be working

I've hidden my old phones several times, but they keep coming back on their own. I don't know what triggers the change.
Android Market could mean both the app and the web interface. In general everyone understands Android Market to be the phone app. You should specify if it is the web interface.

sorry to be pedantic but, Android Market - capital A capital M - only refers to the web interface...the Market app is simply called Market...though i understand that that would not be evident to everyone, it is not for us to know what everyone else would assume in order to cover for it...but now you know and i know and we all know, so it's sweet!

Google Now - Working for me!

This maybe was discussed somewhere else, but I didn't see a thread on it so figured I'd start one.
I've installed Google Now on my rig running full stock (rooted) rom and it's running fine. I did get some network error messages at first, but I assumed it was a result of the permission requests it was tossing at me. Once I allowed the permissions, things seemed to work just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
FYI - Just read that to get the full benefit of google now you must have web history and location history enabled. It'll work without it, but won't provide its full benefit without it.
That said, I guess I won't really be using it much. A choice y'all will have to make. Here's the link:

Is voice working for you and did it break svoice when u double tap home? Thanks for the info
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Voice did not work for me.
Double tap of home gave you the option to choose s voice or search. I defaulted to search and when I double clicked home nothing happened.
I kept getting network errors even though I have both location and search history enabled. I could get weather and Olympic results quickly but when I searched for say "galaxy S3 news" it would sit there loading. I reverted back to stock search.
How to revert: uninstall velvet. Rename the apk for Google quick search. No reboot required.
My phone is verizon stock rooted with noxious ninjas script.
Voice didn't work for me either. One note: don't "install" velvet.apk, push it to system/app instead.
Also, for some reason it kept telling me units in SI instead of US. I reverted because I like voice search. Didn't try disabling the S Voice stuff which I saw may help.

There are several things that don't work for me.
As previously mentioned, voice searching is broken.
On my xoom the Google now app displays card such as weather, traffic, and sports scores when I open it without doing any searches. This function does not work.
Also, I get notifications from Google now on the xoom. The app is integrated in the os. None of this works on the s3.
Pretty much all you will get is a replacement of the current search app that will display cards for some results using text input only. It is not worth it to switch right now. If you are curious about how Google now works, just search for demo videos.

it's now fully functional (including voice). there's another post floating around with instructions.
thanks for sharing this! everything works fine!
Can someone point me in the direction of the fully working version? I installed yesterday and there were a bunch of problems.
Here's the "fully" working version:

I say "fully" because at least for me, nothing relating to the calendar works. Doesn't see my existing appointments, can't add new ones. Voice search works fine.
So I got it installed on my Verizon S3.
I don't see a Now app in my drawer but do get it when I press the home screen mic button and can voice search and all of that works well. Set an alarm etc.
I don't see any cards though and I don't have google now settings in the google search app to change from metric etc. I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 online/offline. I didn't install anything else. Did I miss something?
Also double clicking the home button now brings up the voice dialer, how can that be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Cool, thanks. I am concerned that I don't get the settings to change from metric in the search app too.
I realize though I should be patient and wait for google to "award" me cards and then I might get the weather settings I am looking for.
Voice Dialer is messed up
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Where are my cards!

So I guess it's been 4 or 5 days since I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 and I still don't have any cards. Did I miss something or maybe have a bad install? Any suggestions to try?

Figured my problem out. It was because I have a google apps (for business) account. I had to enable at settled in my domain management to permit google now for my users (aka me).
I then cleared the Google Search Apps data and cashe and reopened it and got the welcome to Google Now setup screen.

Might be a questioned already answered. I just got my s3 a few days ago, but does google navigation work with google now. I installed the m7 online/offline version but it just sits there. Voice search, cards, everything else works but turn by turn navigation.:cyclops:

Apps not allowed on root?

Recently tried installing 9 innings baseball and upon startup of the app it prompted me that "Device is Rooted, Please try again when Unrooted". First, is this legal? Second, is there a way to get around this? Third, How does this app even detect my root?
I'd love to play this game as I heard good things about it!
Thanks in Advance!

been looking for a good baseball app - but I guess I cannot use it now. found this forum though - might have better luck there:

Why would it not be legal? Note, this is the not the same question as whether or not it's the right thing to do. They can stop anyone they want from playing, it's their right. Apps typically block root when they used some type of shared scoring or leaderboard system that is susceptible to client-side hacking. It's a cheap workaround to prevent rooted players from playing rather than having to actually make their app secure.
As for how, a quick Google search turned up this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1101380/determine-if-running-on-a-rooted-device
That's a very simplistic way to check, and even it would be difficult to hide from. I've no doubt companies that are doing this as an anti-hacking measure are doing things more complex than this.
Yea I did a google search too and nothing seemed to help. I tried the temp unroot but that doesn't work. Was wondering if the XDA community knew some better way as I didn't find anything on the forums.
Legality side of it, Yea I suppose your right. But it's like saying I can't install WinAMP on Windows because I changed some registry files. Companies should defiantly not use rooting as an "anti-hacking" tool against their app. Either way they got a bad review because of it, hopefully they will take it into consideration and fix it.
It's the first time I've ever heard of an app not allowed because of root, is that a common thing?
Not really common, per se, but I've heard of it on a couple of other games. It's almost universally games that are susceptible to some type of client side hacking. There are some other apps that will do more specific things, like block you if you try to run an ad blocker, but very few will outright stop you for only rooting.

Hey it WORKED!
What I had to do:
1) Installed SuperSU
2) Went to Settings>Apps>Manage Apps>All and Force Stopped Superuser
3) Opened SuperSU, Settings, and unchecked Enable Superuser.
This app must use the 3rd method listed on shrike1978's link where it checks for su binary. Thankfully because the other two checking methods would be impossible to get around without unrooting. (I'm sure it's not impossible, but more work than I care to do)
Thanks for the help AgentFour20
No problem . Just hit the thanks button , that would be greatly
appreciated .
