Is this phone reliable? - HTC Sensation

I was going to get a Desire HD on eBay but I just realised the Sensation is about the same price anyway, so I thought I'd get one of these instead.
However, I've just been reading the Amazon reviews and there's a lot of negativity. Stuff about the headphone socket breaking and calling random numbers when you're listening to music, random reboots, crashes, slow performance, etc...
So I'm asking owners here, do you find it to be a good phone? Are those issues common or is it just that only the few unfortunate people who got a few faulty units did the Amazon reviews?
Thanks.

Hi,
Phone works fine. I don't think that you will have too many problems.
My main complaints are:
. Backcover make some noise.
. Batery life. 1 day max. Slow charging.
. Backspeaker not loud.
I'm happy with my sensation and wont change it this year.
Regards

I personally find it to be a very solid phone and have no complaints apart from the crappy battery life

+1 to all above. However depending on some custom roms, you may get a bit better battery life and/or audio quality. I changed out my back cover with a white one and put a clear hybrid aprolink tpu/clear plastic case.
I personally still like my phone...not love...I love my Nexus One LOL. So my next phone will most likely be a Nexus of some iteration.

I love my sensation! Its been wonderful! Don't regret my purchaser at all! I'm really enjoying my device!

mine has been awesome. its pretty durable, although i broke the digitizer once and the back cover is a bit smashed up, but that has nothing to do with the hardware.
i liked the phone on CM7 and i LOVE it on CM9. its the way it should be now.

Yes it is a beast phone very reliable

About the headphones issue as far as i know its caused because of the paint of the backcover falling of, it only happens when using headphones with microphone, with normal headphones you'll hear like unplugging them, there's a thread and easy fix for that
The randoom reboots seem to be caused because of a problem with battery pins, there is a thread for that, i havent had this. But it can also be soft related.
Slow performance? It depends on what you use your phone for or what you have used before (no ios ultra smooth ui here), however for example, with the adreno drivers update i saw an inmense improvement in games and flash performance, no more laggy youtube even with hd videos, along with a custom kernel and rom this thing is fast, but i've noticed the lack of ram when trying to do heavy multitask it doesnt always keeps your apps opened, even if you switch between them instantly, a score of 6500~ in antutu and 45-50 in nenamark2 gives you an idea of performance.
Another issues are the dust under the screen (this really bugs me under sunlight) and the wifi problem, some overheat and not so good build quality (but great design), the touchscreen issue that i never had until i dropped mine (there's thread and fix), but overall i really like it and most of these problems are not so bad. Most common issues are dust, wifi, touchscreen issues.
Short answer: yes, buy it you can sell it anyway if you dont like it. And ALWAYS test everything before buying it.

It does worry me that the headphone socket can break just because of normal wear and tear or a bit of chipping. Might just go for the Desire HD since it seems to have a better reliability record. Or maybe a Desire S.

It doesn't break just the paint around it chips, if it does there's plenty of simple fixes or you can just get a new backcover for it. I don't really know about the desire series I thought that was low-mid level devices

The DHD was also my first option but i've read that its battey life is extremely poor, and the screen isnt as good as Sensation
Its not that this phone isnt reliable, its just that it has some issues, most of them have an easy fix.

Loving my sensation ! Only complain so far is stock htc headphones randomly calls people.. and music plays/pause by itself but i use the Icrap Headphones and it works well
However battery is really disgusting you might want to purchase an anker along whit your sensation...
And for slow charging i suggest an ipad2 charger just use your regular usb cord whit the ipads little box thingy for charging..

+1 for the screen, my dad has a DHd and the screen looks horrible compared to my sensation also the battery life is really bad, he finds it really difficult to get a days usage and usually has to charge it once in a day I would reccomend the sensation tbh

So this fix would work for the headphone problem?
I reckon I'll go for a Sensation TBH

For what you can get the Sensation for now, it's a bit of a no brainer really, especially with the qHD screen.

Moving from SGS2 to HTC Sensation

I know many ppl may disagree with my decision, but I have been using the SGS2 for 2 months now and I was not impressed with the quality. The built quality is really cheap were I have a small crack next to the power button and the phone never fell!!! Also the signal drops and heat issue make things worse.
The only alternative now is the HTC Sensation. I noticed ppl were complaining about the death grip and lag in the browser, but I think ppl are over reacting and its not big of an issue.
Anyway what I like most of the Sensation is the Sense UI, and the amazing built quality, compared to the SGS2, the Sensation has a way better feel in the hand.
What do you guys think?
Welcome to the world of notification LEDs!
I have both and they are great in their own way. Yes sensation users also have retorted problems like over heating, signal issues etc. Honestly all these issues look common to all high end dual core phones.
Build quality is better with sensation and feels nice to hold in the hand.
Performance is better with sgs2 and feels much snappier than sensation even with out sense. Altough in everyday use it isn't that noticeable.
Display is better with sgs2 by a long margin according to me.
Many sensation users have reported wifi issues, but for me wifi with sensation is way faster than sgs2.
With the same number of apps, battery is better in sgs2 than compared to sensation. Maybe sense is the culprit here, I don't know but I'm not turning off sense as I like the eye candy it brings
Mobile network wise, I get similar speeds with att 3g network.
Finally keep the one which you like most. Looks you like the sensation more, then go for it.

Death grip is a real issue brother. But yeah the browser is buttery smooth imo. The Sensation feels AWESOME in the hand, Aluminum body and has really nice heft to it. I'm sure you won't regret getting it.

I wasnt impressed with the over-hyped screen, the yellowish tint and the banding makes it look really bad, it looses the "cleanness" or "pureness" of the screen. In addition the screen gets a burn in affect very quickly.
I dont think droping calls would be a common thing in high end smartphones. In my SGS2, I would say 40% of my calls gets dropped and I get a no signal sign in the notification bar. Also the heating is really bad to an extent that u cant carry the phone with your hands anymore! Plus when it gets REALLY hot, the application running would crash in several minutes.
For me I don't have dropped call issue in SGS2, yellow tint not noticeable to me in normal use, banding irritates me sometimes. I mean we can go on discussing pros and cons in both of them. There are similar threads in both the forums and eventually it leads to a flame war.
If you are asking about buying a sensation in this forum, you are going to get favorable responses towards sensation, the same applies in sgs2 forums as well.
The best thing is to read thru sensation general forums and see what issues users are complaining about and then try out yourself to see if those happen to you or if you can live with that

Yes you are right, but I posted in the sensation forum because I need more convincing in buying it, as I already have the SGS2 and I know what is the device like.
My favorite thing about my sensation is the qHD screen. For me, I really enjoy the extra screen real estate. Also, I think the colors on the sensation screen look very true to life. On the other hand I've noticed that most AMOLED screens of all types (AMOLED, AMOLED+, SAMOLED+) produce colors that are so vibrant that they look unreal.

Hi, I also have Sesation. I have no problems with it. Well, dead grip is noticeable, but you must hold it in the right top corner to lose one dot of signal. I have no problems with it.
And of corset Sense is much more beautifull than touchwiz.
Before I have bought Sensation, I compare both phones in the shop. And it isn't secret, that Sensation feel much better in hand than SGS2. And in my opinion build quality of sensation is more important than SGS2 is for 0.001 ms faster
But there is one thing I don't like about sensation. And this is battery. I have to charge it every day. And i am not heavy user.

If I was in your shoes,I would give it a while and see what else pops up.
Yes I own a Sensation and do like most things about it.
I do feel they rushed it to market to beat the Samsung intro.
The new I Phone should be out shortly and I'm thinking the new Blackberry.
There may be an "updated" Sensation as well.
You can bet they've been watching and learning from the Sensation.
Patience will be your ally here.
I like the Sensation but will be buying what ever SGSII variant T-Mobile gets. The browser on my Sensation has never been laggy. In fact, I think its pretty fast. Faster than my G2X. Where the phone lags is in its ****ty Sense UI. HTC added to much eye candy to it resulting in a boggy feel.
Like I said, I like the Sensation but I really like the direction Samsung is going with Android.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
Welcome to the Sensation. I really love this phone and i expect you will too. The SGSII is a great phone but i find in the long run build quality is one of the most important features cuz you can always flash a new rom if you're not liking the way your phones running. the only downside to coming over is that the development is still growing so you'll have a little bit of a wait if you like changing up your roms a lot. but you definitely wont be dissapointed!
Hi, for what its worth, I've had both too, most of what pol have said on here is true. Each phone has its pro's and cons, but I will say, I moved from the sgs2 to the sensation, and have moved back to the sgs2 again. For me, the build quality of the sensation isn't any better than the sgs2, due to the stupid battery cover arrangement on the sensation. And the issue with dust on the sensation speaks volumes about build quality. Just cos there is a piece of aluminium involved doesn't make it better specifically. Actually, from a radio point of view its just plain stupid, as ppl are now realizing.
I was very close to buying a Sensation but I opted for the Galaxy S2. My reasoning being that the Sensation is not optimised, Sense is bloat and the device is locked. I was simply not prepared to wait months to get a stable ROM. I liked the build of the Sensation, the screen resolution and the prospect of the asynchronous processor but I considered it futile to buy a Sensation at that point. If I were in your position I would stick with the Galaxy S2 and wait to see what happens. When the Sensation finally gets unlocked and there are good ROM options available which help to get the most out of the hardware then make your decision. By the time that happens there might be a better option available for you.

Screen res makes up for the SAMOLED+. What i hated about the SGS2 was the fact that the pictures i took looked AMAZING on the phones beautiful screen yet when i uploaded them looked not-as-good on the mac.
I would get the sensation, and if you dont like it you can get a SGS2 in a trade AND make some money on top. A few Sensation owners have netted SGS2+$100.

In the UK, the Sensation is 375 GBP and the SGS2 is 400 GBP and the SGS2's been out longer. You can pick up a Sensation on eBay for $450 while SGS2's are going for over $600. There are some idiots that bought SGS2's to use on T-Mobile so maybe one of them made a stupid swap out of desperation but the Sensation's not worth more than an SGS2 just about anywhere.

I tell people this all of the time man. Just because a battery cover is aluminum, doesn't mean the phone is built better than one with a plastic cover. You don't see buttons falling off the GSII like you see on the Sensation. Your also 100% correct about the cell cignal along with every other signal passing through plastic easier than metals. Samsung uses plastic for a reason. Its light and it provides the end user with the most important aspect of a cell phone. Signal strength! The most rigid smart phone I've ever owned was the Vibrant. It lasted through over 50 fires and numerous drops. I always let it in my shirt pocket while at work and after coming out of a fire, it was usually wet. My Nexus One didn't even make it through 5 fires.

Got both, out of the box sg2 works more flawlessly. Sensation looks better, love the led miss that on the sg2. Camera prefer sg2 more. Like the sense UI hate touchwiz. Internet is definitely much smoother and faster on the sg2. It's easier to navigate through text on sensation, edit copy paste cut works better on sensation.
HTC software works better and functions are more polished. I was very happy with sg2 but after using HTC don't think will be going back sg2, especially as I have flashed ROM sensation works even better.
In my eyes, the only things the Sensation has over the GS2 are build quality, screen res, UI, and the LED. The problem is that all these advantages are mitigated. Build quality is mitigated by the fact that it ruins signal (and realistically, a ton of people, myself included, put a cover on the phone, so we don't even feel/see the back of the phone). Screen res is mitigated by the fact that the screen is an outdated LCD and is pathetic in sunlight. Sense 3.0 is mitigated by the fact that it's laggy as heck. I guess the LED is the only thing not mitigated by anything lol.
I wanted the SGS2, but it seems like T-Mobile will be getting a variant of it in the U.S. that isn't as highly spec'd. That's realistically the only reason I got the Sensation (not the phone I wanted, but it was the best I could do).

NEED an HONEST USER opinion PLEASE ^^,

ive posted a soliciting opinion in the galaxy s II forum..of corz most of the answers was inclined to having a galaxy s2..
im torn to choosing between htc sensation and sgs2.
ive read many users opinion and complaint regarding so many issues about htc sensation..one of which is the "death grip" on wifi radio.some are the unresponsive touchscreen and the screen acquiring dust overtime...compared to sgs2 yellowish tint problem and the back side being very hot..
so i want to solicit opinions to the real htc sensation user before buying it..viewing angle is not an issue for me coz i really dont want others on my side to see what im doing with my phone specially when im texting or something..
so if any of u has a hands on with htc sensation and the sgs2..please i need ur help..im using xperia arc as of now and want to buy a phone with dual core cpu ^^,
thanks and more power
Working in a mobile shop I get to play with phones all day. When it come to death grip all smart phones have it sensation and gs2 included. I chose the sensation purely on the build quilty. The galaxy s 2 is plasticy and feels cheap but the screen is amazing. When it come to faulty units HTC has less issues than other manufactures and I see less returns on them too.

Honestly it's really hard to pick between either.
I honestly went with the Sensation because I like HTC due to their customer service. They were friendly to me and replaced parts on my Touch HD. After heavy usage and heat it went crazy and then HTC fixed it for me even though I bought it internationally and shouldn't have gotten any warranty.
That's not to say Samsung has horrible customer service, it's just after that I very much stayed with HTC.
I could be a rare case though.
I own both phones and without question IMO, the sgs2 is the best android phone available. I do like the build quality of the Sensation better but I don't care how it feels I only care about how it works.

I bought Sensation, because I love good built phones (I don't want to pay 450€ for mobile phone, which is from cheap plastic...) . And because I prefer Sense to TouchWiz.
But anyway, I have a suggestion for you. Flip a coin and say that head is Sensation, and number is SGS2. And when the coin will be in air, you will know which side you hope to be. And then buy one phone, which you are hoping to fall. And not the one that really falls =)
Hope it helps
Sensation vs SGS2
I bought my sensation because:
Stylish (not similar to other devices- ex. apple suing samsung)
Sense UI (best UI, hands down)
Power consumption
Screen (Less power consumption)
Built Quality
P.S.
Death grip can only happen if intentionally done (check youtube)
SGS2 screen technology (AMOLED) "drawbacks include reduced brightness and colors that are often over-saturated. OLED screens also suffer an awkward aging effect, where the red, green and blue sub-pixels will deteriorate and lose efficiency at different rates, which causes brightness and color consistency to worsen over time. While improvements are being made, it's important to understand that this display technology is still relatively immature." ....Engadget

If you can, go to the store and try both. You will see which one you like better

I was actually torn between getting these two, at one stage I placed an order for the SG2 - lucky paypal was being slow with giving me my money from the sale of my iPhone - Thus after a day I cancelled the order and re-ordered the Sensation purely for the qHD, aluminium unibody and build quality along with what I thought and hoped would be the faster phone!
Hopefully over the coming months the gap will close between the two phones, remember that at 1.5GHz this phone benchmarks better that the SG2 and HTC under clocked it to 1.2GHz, also in benchmarks the phone is pushing something like 25% more pixels

Dust will go inside the phone from the top and from the camera holes. I clean the inside 1's a week, but dust does not go inside the screen. the good thing about the sensation design is that you can replace the cover with a new one if you damaged it and it will be like new as long as you don't damaged the screen.
I think you should go to a store and play with both phones and decide for yourself which one you like best. Both are great phones with plus and minuses. If you like the design and plastic build of the SGS2 then buy it. I would have bought the SGS2 if it was designed like the sensation.

I have tried very hard to try to recreate this "death grip" and I cannot do anything to lose signal! I wouldnt even put that into your equation right now. As far as the screen, my screen is very responsive an accurate but I do have a bit of dust under it but that is more a minor annoyance. I am a little bias as I am a sensation owner, but Im just saying, I use to be a stock android guy and hated sense, but sense 3.0 is bomb! I would take the sensation over the sgsII almost any day just because of sense 3.0. (Its that good) And then again everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I've have owned the sgs2 and currently have the sensation.
The only reason I changed over is cos I missed sense UI, if that isn't a problem for you then I'd say get the galaxy s2.
Galaxy s2 is faster, web browsing is faster, the camera and colours are brill, the speaker is louder and in my opinion better.
I've noticed my sensation hangs on web pages, apps don't open as quick.
Im not sure if I'm correct on saying this but to me it feels that sense 3.0 isnt supposed to run on this device even though my old desire hd handled it flawlessly.
I understand when people say that touchwiz looks very iphonish, and I agree also.
The one thing that bugged me with the galaxy s2 is defo the fact there is no notification light.
I'm gonna finish now and will probably get flamed but its just how I feel.
Like I said I come back to HTC cos I missed sense, but if ur not bothered bout UI then I'd say get galaxy s2.
Hopefully HTC bring out an update that would make my device fly.

No Flaming here just manlove I totally agree with you. I switched from touch HD to sensation. I would have bought SGS2 if it was designed differently. I think it is a great phone except I just can't get over the design, it is ugly
I'm going to speak primarily of the Sensation because I have no experience with the SGS2:
Pros:
Build quality (although I honestly don't get why people think this is such a big deal when a lot of people put covers on their phone)
UI (I need to stress that VISUALLY I like Sense 3.0, you'll see what I mean later)
qHD resolution
Design (basically same category as build quality)
Web browsing (qHD makes it really nice, and I've also read that the SGS2 doesn't automatically rewrap text when you zoom in/out like the Sensation does)
Cons:
Screen tech (I will never buy a LCD phone again; LCD is absolutely worthless in direct sunlight and bright areas and I can't see my phone's screen in said situations; and plus as SAMOLED+ technology matures they'll take care of problems like the yellowish tint)
Speaker (there is no way for me to put this other than to say the Sensation's speaker is absolutely ****ty; my brother's old MyTouch 4G has a WAY louder speaker and it's an older phone)
Processor (this is sort of a time-related thing, because in a technical sense the Sensation's chip actually has some advantages on paper like asynchronous cores; the problem is is that Gingerbread apparently doesn't have adequate dual-core support and I don't believe an asynchronous dual-core phone will do as well as a synchronous dual-core phone until ICS, but even then we'll have to see what does better)
UI (while I also put UI in the Pros section for its looks, I have to say that Sense 3.0 is laggy as **** on the Sensation and is not optimized; I'm saying this while I'm on one of the faster custom ROMs, which still is laggy; I don't like the looks of Touchwiz like many on here, but I would kill for its smoothness)
Camera (not that it's bad, it's quite good, but reviews are unanimous that the SGS2 camera is even better)
Internal memory (1 GB vs. 16 GB; need I say more?)
RAM (768 MB vs. 1 GB; again, need I say more?)
Deathgrip (I know people will say that all phones experience deathgrip issues, but I don't think most have it as bad as the Sensation does)
Battery (this is minor, because the battery life is pretty decent, but most top-line phones are coming out with upwards of 1700 mAh batteries these days)
That sums up my views, I may be missing a few points here and there. The only things I like about my Sensation are the design and build quality, the UI, and the qHD resolution. Otherwise, I honestly think that the Sensation was completely out-spec'd even at the time it came out.
I have Sensation for about three months now! I came from a HD2 ( a special case ) and i was expecting the most powerful smartphone in the world. At first i was disappointed (before S-off ). The lag that everyone is talking about WAS there! The phone wasn't really laggy but it was not as i expected. The apps were launching really fast but i knew it could get much better. The gs2 was at the time a lot faster. The normal user couldn't tell the difference and every day experience was the same if not better ( i prefer sense ui too ). I'm writing in the past tense because after the S-off and with a custom rom (IC 2.3.5) my Sensation is blazing fast ( almost as i want it to be ). Anyway, you should go and try both of them. GS2 is a great phone and if you choose to buy it you won't regret it. It's a matter of personal preference! I prefer HTC's quality, looks, qHD screen, customer service and Sense UI. You may prefer the Super Amoled Plus, more built in memory and RAM. It's your choice .
I love my Sensation. Bought 5 of them for the family. Haven't had any issues. Especially now that updates are out and bugs are getting fixed (not to mention custom roms), the Sensation is a super sweet phone.

Considering Sensation, coming from G2x

Note: I am not interested in any other phone other than Sensation either coming out or is already out so please don't suggest waiting, Thanks.
I currently have a G2x that I think is pretty awesome and really fast but I have seen sense in the past and played a little with Sensation and really liked it.
I wanted to ask those of you that come from a G2x share if your experience is better or worse.
Things I would like to know:
-Screen, Is the qHD much better than the bright IPS? Are colors washed out?
-Camera, is the camera better on Sensation?
-Speaker/Earpiece, are they loud and clear?
-Earphones, good qualith sound?
-build quality, I've hold it in my hands but for like 10 mins, long term build quality, how good is it?
-Sense, I tried 3.0 but not 3.5 what are the improvements?
-Features, Does all the features just work? GPS, Wifi signal, reception, in call quality, wifi tethering, bluetooth?
I would Greatly appreciate if someone can answer my questions as I am interested in this phone and I really like Sense and all the customizations and devs support this phone is getting, since I will be sticking with this phone for a while and G2x is awesome however, it's got 0 support from LG and it's got a few devs but not near as many as in here.
Thanks again

Screen: IMO its better than IPS, mainly because of the size of it. the colors arent washed out at all and its very crisp and vivid. intenet browsing is amazing and very easy to read
Camera: there are a few threads posting ppls pic, and yes, its fantastic, and 8mp pics look great on the phone screen and amazing on pc. 1080p video recording is top notch, and low (320x240) look good still, its what i use for quick videos to email, no complaints so far, and almost no blurring or ghosting in any res.
speaker/earpiece: the speaker is good quality sound, as is the earpiece (especially when in Dolby) but the only problem is with the htc kernels capped the volume, so its never as loud as it should be. i reommend app "volume+".
build: one word. Amazing. feels solid, ive dropped it once on the sidewalk, and had just a slight dent on the outer shell, not other issues tho. and the design of a 2 piece unibody makes for easy sd and battery pulls.
sense: 3.5 wont be out for a bit, so i woulnd worry about that. 3.0 is my fav UI, but there are soooo many others to choose from the market and the themes thread.
features: all work stunningly for me, GPS lock in 2-3 seconds, and all cell/data work great, but that really depends on your network. i consistantly use wifi teather and BT, the work spectatularity. wifi teather now allows 5 connections.
hope that helps!
Hi moshe22,
I have the Sensation and my wife has the G2x. I've played with her phone and will try to give you my OPINION on your questions below:
-Screen, Is the qHD much better bright IPS? Are colors washed out?
*My screen seems brighter and more vivid.
-Camera, is the camera better on Sensation?
*The camera on the Sensation blows away the camera on my wifes G2x. Especially now with newest update from LG... you are stuck with the very limited default Gingerbread camera on the G2x.
-Speaker, are they loud?
*The back speaker on my Sensation leaves much to be desired. The actual phone speaker is loud and clear.
-Earphones, good qualith sound?
*Sorry I don't use the headphones that came with it.
-build quality, I've hold it in my hands but for like 10 mins, long term build quality, how good is it?
*I think the build quality on my Sensation is pretty good. I have it in a TPU case so I dont have any screen issues or notice any creaking or anything.
-Sense, I tried 3.0 but not 3.5 what are the improvements?
Sensation only has 3.0. It's ok. I think my wife's G2x is faster using the default launcher but if i put Launcher pro or ADW on my sensation, then it's just as fast.
-Features, Does all the features just work? GPS, Wifi signal, reception, in call quality, wifi tethering, bluetooth?
Everything works, but her G2x seems to get better signal than my Sensation even if we are sitting side by side. I still get a good signal though so it's not much to be concerned about. Everything else works great on both phones.
Honestly the main difference I see between the phones is the bigger/brighter screen on the Sensation. Oh... and her phone has the reboot itself every so often issue still and has some light bleed around the LCD. If given the choice, I would definitely pick my Sensation over her G2x.

Hey moshe, glad to see you here in this phone section. I was a g2x owner, switched to sensation two weeks ago. I can tell you that the sensation's camera is indeed far superior than the g2x's and i'm happy with the phone so far. It just feels good in hand, and I'm liking the design of the sensation over g2x too. Hope this helps.
Thanks for your replies guys, you guys just provided great insight specially when comparing to the G2x.
It is almost unbelievable how much support this phone is getting compared to the G2x, I like that.

Hey Moshe I remember seeing you in the g2x forums lol I was one of the people who loved their g2x. Mine was running perfectly i had minimal screen bleed and my phone never randomly rebooted. It truly was perfect. Only reason i got rid of the g2x was lack of development and i was just getting bored. I did a straight trade for the sensation and I'm in love with it. Everything that people have said above are true. I would def recommend getting this phone its awesome.
I find the speaker is amazing especially with audio effects, and so are the headphones that are shipped.
Generally amazing phone all around.

YO KEEP THE G2X if yours is perfect! I switched over because I kept having issues, plus HTC build quality is FAR superior to LGs
Sense UI is fun for a while but its so SLOW. Even if you use ADW/other launchers yes the sensation gets a little faster, but its still running sense which is a total resource hog. G2X is faster just because it has AOSP.
The Screen: G2x's screen is better with the IPS display and contrast, you will be dissapointed with HTC's but the thing that makes up for it is the bigger screen. Even though the sensation has a qHD screen they are essentially very close in ppi since the G2x is smaller. Colors/clarity is not as good on the sensation.
Camera: TOTAL WIN for the sensation, definitely has to be the best camera on a phone. I took a picture from a moving car and it turned out more clear than my actual camera.
I think the speakers suck on both phones. Earphone is also meh.
I also don't have a data plan, I noticed that the G2x has a better wifi range, by a significant margin. It's actually equipped with a better wifi chip if I'm not mistaken. Other than that call quality/signal quality is the same.
Once AOSP comes to the sensation I will rock it all day. If you think sense is for you switch asap, if not hold off until the aosp roms come in for the sensation.
to break it down:
G2x screen better/Sensation screen bigger
G2x faster UI out of the box/Sensation prettier UI but slow
G2x camera sucks/Sensation is awesome
G2x build quality is weak/Sensation is awesome
G2x/Sensation speakers/earphone quality is mediocore
G2x better internals but not by much/Sensation is pretty good
Also, if you do a lot of 3d gaming stick with the g2x, the sensation ins't fully supported to run everything.

Thanks for this reply, it actually made me want to switch even more. To be honest I like AOSP but sense is just more useful, to me at least.
I do take lots of pictures and pictures in gb camera sucks, since they got rid of the LG camera. Pretty disappointed, I was quite happy with the LG camera.
I have flashed the ported lg camera from Froyo but is just not the same.
Screen is my only concern, and I do know there are two panels, I believe one is very bright and nice and the other one is washed out, hopefully I get the nice one.

Former G2x user here (talk about a phone with issues):
-Screen, Is the qHD much better than the bright IPS? Are colors washed out?
***qHD aside, I prefer the Sensation screen. The colors do not seem washed out to me and the viewing angle is fine.
-Camera, is the camera better on Sensation?
***I think the Sensation camera is better
-Speaker/Earpiece, are they loud and clear?
***Quality is good and clear, but I think the G2x had a louder speaker/earpiece
-Earphones, good qualith sound?
***The included earphones stink, but others sound great.
-build quality, I've hold it in my hands but for like 10 mins, long term build quality, how good is it?
***Pretty good. Some people report that the back cover creaks a bit, while some others develop dust under the screen. I have neither problem so far. As for the glass, it's gorilla glass just like on the G2x.
-Sense, I tried 3.0 but not 3.5 what are the improvements?
***Sense 3.0 is pretty neat, but it will probably be quite some time before we see Sense 3.5 on this phone officially. I like Sense 3.0 better than the past iterations of the interface. That being said, some of the devs and chefs will likely give us some Sense 3.5 goodies in the near future...
-Features, Does all the features just work? GPS, Wifi signal, reception, in call quality, wifi tethering, bluetooth?
***Everything works great for me. In call quality is good, and my reception seems a little better than the G2x.
Also, having rooted and installed custom recovery on both phones, the Sensation is easy to root and it is FAR EASIER to install CWM or TWRP on the Sensation than on the G2x. Rooted and custom recovery in about 10 minutes on the Sensation, and none of that pull the battery, hold down all the buttons while plugging in the USB cable bs like on the G2x.

I personally think the screen on the Sensation is better, mine isn't washed out so that may play a big part in it.
Sensation camera blows G2x out the water, speakers on both phone are ok no BB, G2x out of the box is faster but if you use a custom ROM for Sensation it will be just as fast. I would use Insert Coin by Baadnewz with faux 123 kernel.
Switched over from G2x 2 weeks ago and no regrets at all. No reboots, freezes, screen problems, etc. Guess I got a perfect Sensation
Oh if you have enough exchanges on your G2x you may qualify for them to exchange it for a Sensation, that's how i got mine

It's gonna be the same thing besides the beats audio headset and battery size, the same 1.5GHz chip that's in the Special Edition is the same chip that's in the regular Sensation but they just bogged it down. Faux 123 has a kernel out that is at 1.56GHz and it works perfect.
I'd just pay $22 to get a 1900mAH battery on Amazon like I did

How is this phone?

So I'm getting a new phone. Right now I have a Cliq 2, but I'm getting a new one in the next week.
Right now I'm trying to decide between this, the G2x, or the GSII. I would say the Amaze, but I've heard bad things about it.
I'm not trying to get you guys to tell me why I should get this phone over the others, I'd just like to know what this phone is like. What are the ups? The downs? How's the phones radio? Custom ROMs? Battery life? And anything else you feel might be good to know before I make a decision.
Thanks!
Well I would scratch off the G2x right off the bat and as for the other two? There is a thread about the GS2 and the Sensation a little ways down if you want to find it.
What did you heart bad about the Amaze? I see others jumping to that from this phone.

Yeah, I've heard that it's the phone the sensation was supposed to be, but apparently it's got awful battery life and a very small development community.
Nothing to bad, but if this phone is almost exactly like the Amaze, I'd rather go with this, because it's cheaper
Honestly just go look at the amaze forum. As far as I can see it isn't even fully rooted yet. I am happy with my sensation.. yes... Will I switch to a better phone the first chance I get... Yes... The t-mobile sg2 has almost the same hardware and really we still have the best phone they offer. Is the regular sg2 more powerful.. yes, but in reality there are a lot of things better with the sensation. It's all opinion though.. is the dev dead here.. no not really. We have superior sense development continuing on a daily basis here. The aosp dev is crawling because no code release from cm7. Ics is slower to dev on this phone definitely and noone has a good reason why. Personally I am satisfied with the sensation... Am I looking for the next thing I can afford and get... Yeah I am
Edit: And o yeah just x out the G2x its in a different league now in comparison
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using xda premium
Haha yea the Amaze. Xboarder is doing a commendable job trying to keep the dev community alive over there, but TBH it looks pretty slow over there. I think it's just him, Mike, NRG and ComputerKid holding down the fort. Faux might have dabbled in an Amaze kernel, but that's more or less it. It's too bad though. Seems like pretty nice hardware. Too bad it's US exclusive (I think?) so the dev community will remain small on that side of the fence.
Anyway, to the original question. Off the top of my head:
Sensation ups:
Relatively inexpensive now
Nice screen
Good dev community, kind of slow on ROMs lately but there isn't much else to do until ICS. Our kernel devs however are still very active.
Pretty snappy once you rid yourself of the stock rom/kernel
Official ICS is coming early next year per HTC
Sensation downs:
Wifi deathgrip when holding the phone in landscape (this one really sucks)
Reports of dust getting under the screen near the volume rocker (get a case that covers the volume rocker!)
Cell antenna is integrated into the removable back cover
Terrible battery life
Terrible speaker and low volume
CM7 never made it out of alpha stage
No true AOSP ROMs available for the speed freaks
You should probably ask this same question in the SGS2 forum.
Having just bought a sensation myself, I'm a little biased. Having said that, I'd stay far away from the g2x, I researched for weeks before deciding on a sensation and there are a LOT of people with a LOT of problems with the LG phone. I personally don't like the tmo version of the GS2, too big with a low res screen. I really like my sensation so far but I've only had it a single day.
Any of these will be a major step up from the cliq2 though, so I'd say read the forums and go with the one that suits you best.
There are rumours that Telstra (Australia) might be releasing the Amaze as their flagship 4G device.
That might help dev movement a little.

my inputs on sensation:
Pros:
screen, speed, build quality, touchscreen responsiveness, Good ROM options on XDA
, excellent sound quality via headphone, nice camera (for both stills and movie)
Cons:
Bad speaker volume, Battery (Can be improved with aftermarket one like Anker), Poor cellular reception, wifi death grip
I have also used SGS2 of my friend and LG optimus one, both get more cellular signal bars than sensaion. Even my old BB curve has better reception for both cellular and wifi.
HTC Sensation 4G- price-performance ratio: Ok

That's not quite my opinion!
I'm using the Sensation since April and I'm actually satisfied by using this phone! I have installed a custom ROM with other Kernel (CM7.1 based on Bricked AOSP v1.4ondemand_p1984)without Sense and without any HTC or Provider Apps. Everything nice to use!
But!!!
It might be better in terms of so many things!!
Positive:
It have the perfect size and form for a mobile phone- nice to handle, right size of display to manage and watch movies, have a very good camera with LED spots, it's excellent to listen to music over headphones, etc.
Everything perfect, you think!?
Negative:
you have to hold it with two fingers to get no restriction by receiving mobile networks or wifi, bad battery performance with standard ROM, high heat production while charging or using internet (3g or wifi), RAM and internal memory could be some more, the overall quality of housing and little parts (the materials of Samsung phones or especially Apple iPhones looks and feels better, "more expensive")
Summarized:
nice smartphone for beginner! relatively low price! lots of ROM's!
could have!
no must have!!!
But I also think, that the other smartphone manufacturers similar problems have!
So HTC is on a good way, I think!
The amaze is a way better phone then the sensation I just changed to it from the sensation, there isn't many devs but its further then the sensation was at this same time since release the unlock of the bootloader still lets you flash whatever you want and the battery life for me is better, I'm running sense nrgz28s rom its way faster then my sensation ever was, camera is way better front and back and storage space is better, more development will come to it and since HTC will be updating to ics this will be a better phone since it has nfc support as well I'd go for the amaze its also not a us exclusive wind mobile and telus carry it too I believe outside the us. IMO the only other comparable phone is the gs2 but I can't stand lower resolution aftee qhd

I used to have the g2x but got sick of the random shut downs, tmobile replaced my g2x twice and I finally gave up on it. I have the sensation now and am pretty happy with it. The screen is a little bigger and much clearer than G2X. My only complaint is the speakerphone is very weak. Volume is too low to hear if in a crowded/loud area even on highest level. There's lots of great roms and support for this phone. I personally like hypersensation for it's minimalist feature set. Don't have any experience with the SGII but my sister has it and has been having some problems with it so it might be a few updates away from being perfect. The sensation has been out for a while now so most of the kinks have been worked out already. I get about 8 hours of pretty heavy use out of it on a single charge with an upgraded battery (more than a day with light use). I would recommend it.

But the iPhone is glass so dropping it usually means a shatter, and the GSII is plastic, along with most Samsung's, so they tend to feel cheap.

Should i upgrade?

Hello sensation community
Currently i am a proud owner of a HTC desire s and i want to upgrade my phone. I am looking for me with a better battery but also a bigger screen and a faster processor. I very much like the build quality from HTC and their unique unibody case. So the sensation is on my list. Would you recommend this phone to me?
I have also some questions
Is it easy to s-off, root the phone and to apply custom roms?
How long last the battery with medium/heavy usage (heavely whatsapp/sms?
And do you guys think i can play upcoming android games?
I would really appreciate some answers
Thanks in advice

I have HTC Sensation. It was very easy to S-OFF it and install custom ROMs. Usually I charge it every evening, but after overnight charge it can hold 2 days if used very slightly. Havy usage will kill it during one day for sure There are also batteries with extended capacity, like Anker, available.
Considering performance, I think this phone has a great potential that will be unleashed with ICS.

hey, I've owned the HTC Sensation z710e since launch and I can tell you I'd actually advise NOT to get it. It's branded as a fast phone but truth be told it really isn't. When I've asked about the speed compared to sgs2 they say sense slows it down so i used an aosp rom, still slower, until i overclocked till 1.7ghz, it was just a bit better. The phone has over-heating issues, the bottom of the screen and back cover get extremely hot after about 10-20 mins use. There is also a rather pathetic death grip issue, at the top AND bottom of the phone. I'd go for a samsung phone, deffinately. Apart from these three rather annoying facts, it's extremely easy to root and run roms.

Don't wanna make this into an argument but I don't have any of these issues and with ICS the phone is buttery smooth handles 3D games easily like gta and need for speed, out if the box its pants, it doesn't get over heated bit it will at 1.7 the death grip is there but only if you put your whole hand over the back of the phone

I'd have to agree with whynot66, also note that a lot of the complaints/problems about the sensation (ie. dust problems, overheating) are coming out of a very vocal/unlucky minority. After all, users with no problems don't post "HEY I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH MY PHONE!" threads.
Personally, my phone runs super smooth and with ICS I get 60 hours battery life on one overnight charge and medium usage.
I would recommend adopting a wait and see approach though, since the next generation is about to be unveiled.
Side note, isn't it crazy that a generation of phones only lasts for a year tops? And I used to think console generations are short...

Draw back to having the latest phone is that you will be stuck with stock ROM from HTC, development only happens for popular phones and the rate of new models mean no-one spends time learning to code for them.
Look at the HD2, well past it's use date and still going strong because of the huge and expert user base, they've performed miracles with it. I was surprised when I moved from HD2 to Sensation that so little coding has been done for it, no offence to devs, but AOSP is still a while off yet and all the ICS releases are tweaks of a stock ROM leak.
I hope the release rate of new phones slows, otherwise the userbase gets more and more fragmented. Looking at HTC's drop in sales I think they must be realising that cutting edge hardware on it's own itsn't enough, it needs excellent software to shine.
Next time I buy a new phone I'm first gonna check which phone the best devs are buying, then follow them.

That sounds very good. With my Desire S I'm already used to charge it every night so that isnt a problem. But with my current phone i can't always have mobile data on, for whatsapp, facebook, etc. I would really appreciate it if i could have allways mobile data on and use it for textings, no much downloading or surfing, just texting
And do you guys can give some information about battery life? Pls with the screen on time otherwise it would been senseless
Buying another battery like the 1900mah anker isn' a problem either
I don't want to buy these phones cause as mentioned already the developement isnt really big, it's at the beginning of the growning then. Otherwise will these phones be at high prices :/ maybe 450-600€ (europe).
I've heard that the developement on the sensation is very far progressed, is it right?

At the moment I'm using my Desire S with a optimized Sense 3 Rom and it is 75% smooth and thats with a 1GH singlecore processor. So i think the 1,2GH Dualcore processor of the Sensation will be satisfying my needs for speed and smoothness
Besides that I'm to this "overheating" and the death grip. In my opinion its pretty normal for a aluminium-uniboy-phone
I wouldn't go for Samsung as I don't like the plastic case. I don't care if it is high quality plastic or not, I simply don't like that as much as the aluminium unibody from HTC. And I really like HTC Sense, also don't care if it slow downs the phone, I really like the options on Sense and how it is user friendly + the looks so Samsung isn't really an option for me.
A short information, on my current phone, the Desire S, I have to get S-Off (simply with the revolutionary tool, very easy), then install a custom recovery like cwm or 4ext (adb push or as PG88IMG.zip per bootloader, easy too) and then can flash a zip for superuser/root or custom roms.
So I am already used to adb/fastboot commands and can use these as well as update zips within the bootloader. Is it the same on the Sensation or are there any other steps to do?
I have had mine for a week or two. I do not have death grip issue or any of the issues some report to have. I recommend this phone. I absoluty love it. It is not as fast as my g2x but it also doesn't have all the bugs my g2x has. This phone looks great runs great and I do not regret purchasing it.

I am with you, I absolutely love sense!. I have held and played with samsung phones especially the GS2 and plastic doesn't feel anything like aluminum and SGS2 just looks ugly. SGS2 is a great device except for its choice of materials and design, I would have bought one if it wasn't too ugly. Sensation is a nice phone and except for the dust under the screen problem that I have, it is absolutely amazing. But since it is 2012 and quad core phones are coming, I suggest you wait for htc Edge or anything that is quad core.
1.5 dual core is the true measure the development is steadily growing. I have mobile data always on and/or wifi. We're running sense 3.6 leak. But htc will be releasing ics officially soon with sense 4.0 once that is released it will be even better. There is some exceptionally skilled devs around here too

Thats are exactly my thoughts except the part with the waiting
i don't need a quadcore and i can't see where a quadcore could improve something. the most apps on the market are for singlecores and dont take any advantage from more cores. even the dualcore isnt really used, its still useful especially for sense but i didnt see the point in using quadcores. its the same as the ram. for what do you need, let me say 2gb ram, if all the time 1,4gb are free? if you use a device with 768mb of ram and you only use 500mb it isnt a advantage for you to have 2gb of ram. its useless, and in my opinion its the same qith the amount of cores of the processor. we shouldnt move to quadcores if we dont optimized the dualcore to the max.
as always just my thoughts

Battery life for me, with the Anker 1900, is between 24 to 36hrs with phone, data, wifi and sync on all the time - that's with 5 to 6hrs of the screen being on.
For the S-off, root and CWM the sensation is pretty similar, there are several sticky threads you need to read.
Yes it is easy to S-off, root and flash custom ROMs and I havn't had any real issues with it. However, I had a Desire S before my Sensation and I wouldn't say that it was a very big jump between the 2, I agree with a few others on here that you are better off waiting until something else comes along that is worth the extra outlay for a more significant upgrade.
With regards to battery life I have found it to be similar to the Desire S, although the Sensation has a bigger battery it also uses more power so I get a similar amount of life out of it, less than a day at my reasonable heavy usage level.
Something to note, the asmp design of our dualcore Snapdragon is definitely not optimized for performance, and the supposedly powerful Adreno 220 gpu is either overrated or htc just gave us crappy drivers for it.
So like someone said above me, the real world difference between Desire and Sensation will probably not be huge. The Sensation is a good phone, but if you want raw power for gaming, you might want to wait and see what comes down the pipeline.
I also wouldnt go for the Sensation now. The step from Desire S to the Sensa just isnt big enough to justify investing the money. Just wait for a month or two and get the latest model than....which most likely wont be much more expensive then the Sensa XE is now.

but the sensation xe is on a price level were i wouldnt even considering it.
the sensation is now on a price were i really think about upgrading, the screensize of my desire s does really annoying me with the time, its simply to small.. i've looked in shops and tried different phones with different sizes. and 4,3inch fits perfectly for me, 4,65 or even 5,3 is just too big were 4 is a bit too small
I'd say wait too, more so since you're already coming from a good phone.
Hopefully, MWC will push prices of older phones down a little and let you see what new stuff there is too.
