Should i upgrade? - HTC Sensation

Hello sensation community
Currently i am a proud owner of a HTC desire s and i want to upgrade my phone. I am looking for me with a better battery but also a bigger screen and a faster processor. I very much like the build quality from HTC and their unique unibody case. So the sensation is on my list. Would you recommend this phone to me?
I have also some questions
Is it easy to s-off, root the phone and to apply custom roms?
How long last the battery with medium/heavy usage (heavely whatsapp/sms?
And do you guys think i can play upcoming android games?
I would really appreciate some answers
Thanks in advice

I have HTC Sensation. It was very easy to S-OFF it and install custom ROMs. Usually I charge it every evening, but after overnight charge it can hold 2 days if used very slightly. Havy usage will kill it during one day for sure There are also batteries with extended capacity, like Anker, available.
Considering performance, I think this phone has a great potential that will be unleashed with ICS.

The development is getting much better in here ics is fully working only need to charge at might with a day of heavy usage, double that with moderate, everything with regards to custom roms is simple,
However the desire s is a Good phone, wait a little while there's a few new phones round the corner ike the htc ville or the sg3

hey, I've owned the HTC Sensation z710e since launch and I can tell you I'd actually advise NOT to get it. It's branded as a fast phone but truth be told it really isn't. When I've asked about the speed compared to sgs2 they say sense slows it down so i used an aosp rom, still slower, until i overclocked till 1.7ghz, it was just a bit better. The phone has over-heating issues, the bottom of the screen and back cover get extremely hot after about 10-20 mins use. There is also a rather pathetic death grip issue, at the top AND bottom of the phone. I'd go for a samsung phone, deffinately. Apart from these three rather annoying facts, it's extremely easy to root and run roms.

Don't wanna make this into an argument but I don't have any of these issues and with ICS the phone is buttery smooth handles 3D games easily like gta and need for speed, out if the box its pants, it doesn't get over heated bit it will at 1.7 the death grip is there but only if you put your whole hand over the back of the phone

I'd have to agree with whynot66, also note that a lot of the complaints/problems about the sensation (ie. dust problems, overheating) are coming out of a very vocal/unlucky minority. After all, users with no problems don't post "HEY I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH MY PHONE!" threads.
Personally, my phone runs super smooth and with ICS I get 60 hours battery life on one overnight charge and medium usage.
I would recommend adopting a wait and see approach though, since the next generation is about to be unveiled.
Side note, isn't it crazy that a generation of phones only lasts for a year tops? And I used to think console generations are short...

Draw back to having the latest phone is that you will be stuck with stock ROM from HTC, development only happens for popular phones and the rate of new models mean no-one spends time learning to code for them.
Look at the HD2, well past it's use date and still going strong because of the huge and expert user base, they've performed miracles with it. I was surprised when I moved from HD2 to Sensation that so little coding has been done for it, no offence to devs, but AOSP is still a while off yet and all the ICS releases are tweaks of a stock ROM leak.
I hope the release rate of new phones slows, otherwise the userbase gets more and more fragmented. Looking at HTC's drop in sales I think they must be realising that cutting edge hardware on it's own itsn't enough, it needs excellent software to shine.
Next time I buy a new phone I'm first gonna check which phone the best devs are buying, then follow them.

That sounds very good. With my Desire S I'm already used to charge it every night so that isnt a problem. But with my current phone i can't always have mobile data on, for whatsapp, facebook, etc. I would really appreciate it if i could have allways mobile data on and use it for textings, no much downloading or surfing, just texting
And do you guys can give some information about battery life? Pls with the screen on time otherwise it would been senseless
Buying another battery like the 1900mah anker isn' a problem either
I don't want to buy these phones cause as mentioned already the developement isnt really big, it's at the beginning of the growning then. Otherwise will these phones be at high prices :/ maybe 450-600€ (europe).
I've heard that the developement on the sensation is very far progressed, is it right?

At the moment I'm using my Desire S with a optimized Sense 3 Rom and it is 75% smooth and thats with a 1GH singlecore processor. So i think the 1,2GH Dualcore processor of the Sensation will be satisfying my needs for speed and smoothness
Besides that I'm to this "overheating" and the death grip. In my opinion its pretty normal for a aluminium-uniboy-phone
I wouldn't go for Samsung as I don't like the plastic case. I don't care if it is high quality plastic or not, I simply don't like that as much as the aluminium unibody from HTC. And I really like HTC Sense, also don't care if it slow downs the phone, I really like the options on Sense and how it is user friendly + the looks so Samsung isn't really an option for me.
A short information, on my current phone, the Desire S, I have to get S-Off (simply with the revolutionary tool, very easy), then install a custom recovery like cwm or 4ext (adb push or as PG88IMG.zip per bootloader, easy too) and then can flash a zip for superuser/root or custom roms.
So I am already used to adb/fastboot commands and can use these as well as update zips within the bootloader. Is it the same on the Sensation or are there any other steps to do?

I have had mine for a week or two. I do not have death grip issue or any of the issues some report to have. I recommend this phone. I absoluty love it. It is not as fast as my g2x but it also doesn't have all the bugs my g2x has. This phone looks great runs great and I do not regret purchasing it.

I am with you, I absolutely love sense!. I have held and played with samsung phones especially the GS2 and plastic doesn't feel anything like aluminum and SGS2 just looks ugly. SGS2 is a great device except for its choice of materials and design, I would have bought one if it wasn't too ugly. Sensation is a nice phone and except for the dust under the screen problem that I have, it is absolutely amazing. But since it is 2012 and quad core phones are coming, I suggest you wait for htc Edge or anything that is quad core.

1.5 dual core is the true measure the development is steadily growing. I have mobile data always on and/or wifi. We're running sense 3.6 leak. But htc will be releasing ics officially soon with sense 4.0 once that is released it will be even better. There is some exceptionally skilled devs around here too

Thats are exactly my thoughts except the part with the waiting
i don't need a quadcore and i can't see where a quadcore could improve something. the most apps on the market are for singlecores and dont take any advantage from more cores. even the dualcore isnt really used, its still useful especially for sense but i didnt see the point in using quadcores. its the same as the ram. for what do you need, let me say 2gb ram, if all the time 1,4gb are free? if you use a device with 768mb of ram and you only use 500mb it isnt a advantage for you to have 2gb of ram. its useless, and in my opinion its the same qith the amount of cores of the processor. we shouldnt move to quadcores if we dont optimized the dualcore to the max.
as always just my thoughts

Battery life for me, with the Anker 1900, is between 24 to 36hrs with phone, data, wifi and sync on all the time - that's with 5 to 6hrs of the screen being on.
For the S-off, root and CWM the sensation is pretty similar, there are several sticky threads you need to read.

Yes it is easy to S-off, root and flash custom ROMs and I havn't had any real issues with it. However, I had a Desire S before my Sensation and I wouldn't say that it was a very big jump between the 2, I agree with a few others on here that you are better off waiting until something else comes along that is worth the extra outlay for a more significant upgrade.
With regards to battery life I have found it to be similar to the Desire S, although the Sensation has a bigger battery it also uses more power so I get a similar amount of life out of it, less than a day at my reasonable heavy usage level.

Something to note, the asmp design of our dualcore Snapdragon is definitely not optimized for performance, and the supposedly powerful Adreno 220 gpu is either overrated or htc just gave us crappy drivers for it.
So like someone said above me, the real world difference between Desire and Sensation will probably not be huge. The Sensation is a good phone, but if you want raw power for gaming, you might want to wait and see what comes down the pipeline.

I also wouldnt go for the Sensation now. The step from Desire S to the Sensa just isnt big enough to justify investing the money. Just wait for a month or two and get the latest model than....which most likely wont be much more expensive then the Sensa XE is now.

but the sensation xe is on a price level were i wouldnt even considering it.
the sensation is now on a price were i really think about upgrading, the screensize of my desire s does really annoying me with the time, its simply to small.. i've looked in shops and tried different phones with different sizes. and 4,3inch fits perfectly for me, 4,65 or even 5,3 is just too big were 4 is a bit too small

I'd say wait too, more so since you're already coming from a good phone.
Hopefully, MWC will push prices of older phones down a little and let you see what new stuff there is too.

[Q] HTC INCREDIBLE S or HTC SENSATION

I really can't beloved the amount of people who are slagging off the IS because it can't be unlocked yet.
DON'T BUY A PHONE EXPECTING THE DEV SCENE TO BE HUGE
The IS is a great phone, and if custom ROM's are the be all and end all for you then its your own fault for not doing research before buying it. The are far, far to many people round here with an expectation that fantastic ROM's and exploits just appear out of thin air, the people that produce them work very hard, and don't owe you anything.
Why don't ppl do some research and try and help, rather than just twiddling your thumbs and moaning until it happens?
Back on topic, I haven't used the Sensation so I can't compare them both, but it is unlikely to be a huge seller so you probably wont find a huge amount of work for it, even if it is unlocked. I love the IS and have no complaints about the hardware at all, but I must admit the sensation is sexy and they do run similar software.
The only thing I would say is if you want durability with the IS, get a case. The phone is a little fragile against drops without one
So Guys Help me out here
I am stuck between Incredible S and Sensation cant decide which one should i buy, i am switching from Samsung Omnia and want to try Android, phone should be durable good camera good battery and should be fast enough to play games on it, i really like the customization on HTC but camera is good on Sensation

I say get the sensation! It has dual core and qhd. I am also upgrading from a htc touch HD. I was trying to decide between the desire s and the sensation and I figured if I am going to upgrade I might as well go with a dual core. I t is the future. So, I have made up my mind. I am getting the sensation end of the month or next month when the sim free unbranded handsets come out.

Unlikely to be a huge seller? It's HTC's flagship phone, it'll be the best selling HTC phone of this quarter, I'd expect.

Yes maybe you are right it is HTC flagship phone but before the sensation what was HTC flagship phone you guessed right it was the Incredible S so soon sensation is going to be long forgotten for the sole reason that EVO 3d is arriving sooner rather than later it only depends which is going to be a huge seller which is adopted by the huge dev community as it was due to devs that HTC had to back track on the decision of locking the bootloader

If you buy any piece of technology and expect it to be top of the line for long your not going to get far.
Every network is slightly different and the phones appeal differently. I will be going from my HD2 to the Sensation and I will love every minute of it until the next big one comes along that tickles my fancy 1 - 2 years down the road.
Find the phone that YOU want, that makes YOU grin and eagerly anticipate the release of and get it, enjoy it and use it until the next device comes along.
I personally do not want a 3d camera, hate the technology so the EVO 3d does not appeal to me. The Incredible S was incredible, and the Sensation will be for a short time until the next greatest thing comes along.
The community moves fast. People with the phones keep working and developting for them. The OS on my HD2 was dead before the phone released, yet there is still a good community supporting the device and I am not sorry I chose the phone at all.

So ok you are right agree with you that it is going to be only for Sprint but for me iPhone 5 is what making me wait there are lots lots rumors it going to launch in September with ios 5 so that is going to be the benchmark for all phones Samsung galaxy s2 is not a bad phone either so it is very hard for me to choose as I do not want regrets after choosing one beast of a phone and another beast arrives around the corner ios 5 going to have notification and widgets so it could be the complete phone that awaits but can not wait too anxious to make the plunge it is going to be sensation or iPhone 5 if only it comes with larger display do not care for resolution

I agree with you totally.
On a side note, You dont have to want the 3D. The phone's specs are better than the sensation and the 3D is just an added bonus IMO although im not sure how many ppl would be happy to carry a 170g phone in their pocket.
I wish they would have announced a GSM version though so the non US people would also have the option to choose between the sensation and the EVO

More RAM is better if you need more RAM. I haven't seen anyone so far say they've run out of RAM on the Sensation. 1GB is obviously more than 768Mb, but not so sure it's "better". Let's see what the EVO battery life is in use. It may need a larger, and as you say heavier, battery for the same run time. Heavier and thicker isn't better. For me 3D is nothing but a gimmick. I don't need even more viewing angle issues than the Sensation's LCD has. But we each have our own preferences.

Im not sure, but perhaps more RAM could help with things moving more smoothly?
I also think the 3D is a gimmick, just saying that on paper it seems like the EVO has slightly better specs, thats all.
So I currently have a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G that I really like, I have Cyanogen Mod 7.0.3 running on it, and I get great battery life. I have some dust under the glass, I called and they said that they would happily exchange it, but that they don't have the MyTouch 4G and that they will "upgrade" me to the Samsung Galaxy S2 Looking at the forums it doesn't seem like there is much development for these phones. Should I tell Them that I want a different phone? or are there custom ROMS that I can run on the Galaxy S2 I really like the 16 or so hours of battery life I currently get, plus how fast the phone is.
Regardless, you prove my point that sensationalist (no pun intended) tech blogs stress the qualitative, not the factual. These blogs are composed of a bunch of guys who get together and tell you what they "feel" about a certain device, replete with brand loyalty bias and unrepresentative 'tests', which is why it is precisely the source of the rubbish "SAMOLED >>> LCD" claims in the first place.
Also, each device can implement the same screen 'technology' differently. The HD2 has a better screen than the G2 in terms of color accuracy (and certainly more than the Galaxy S 1's blue tint, pixelation/blur/colorwarping) and even outdoor visibility. And it wasn't even a SUPER lcd. The Sensation probably has a different screen

2 good points (compared to desire). Visible in landscape mode in polarized sunglasses, good visibility outside. The rest of it is worse than desire slcd. Not sure about incredible s, but hope info helps you.
can someone tell me if incredible s also suffers from wifi signal loss much like the sensation? im seriously thinking of getting IS instead of sensation due to death grip issue... dual core phones can wait for now. thanks.

[Q] Sense 3.0 lag,unresponsive touchsreen,lousy battery life... Evo3D better choice?

Hi mates, I've been reading up on comments, reviews and opinions on the Evo 3d and Sensation for the past few weeks and am already getting headaches from it. Now I'm at the brink of buying one of these (preferably this week as my iphone makes me sick more and more).
Your opinion is very important to me as I'm about to extend my contract for 2 years!
I don't need the 3d, but I'm having the feeling that the Evo3d is the overall better device. However, the bulky design and the inferior camera make it hard not to go for the Sensation (especially since I don't give a damn about 3d).
What I need to know from you guys are the follwoing things:
1. The Sensation's been known to have a slight lag in Sense and overall slower performance compared to the evo 3d. It was said many times this could be due to software issues. Has the performance since been improved in a way that it's on par with the Evo? Are the European units any better/different than the American ones?
2. I live in Europe. Are chances high I will get a faulty unit with a bad touchscreen? It seems to be a hardware issue so I guess there will be no software fix and sending the unit in 5 times with weeks of waiting in between is a dealbreaker for me.
3. I have read many reviews saying the Sensations battery life is superior to that of the Evo 3d and I have read just as many reviews that claim the opposite.
I do the occasional surfing while in train/bus, maybe 1-2h of music listening, checking emails several times a day and use google maps+GPS from time to time. No 3d use, movie watching or hours of gaming intended. Which one will serve me better?
The Sensation is slicker and doesn't have the ugly and unhandy camera-bumps like the Evo, but I'm very allergic to lag so if the Sensation is just underpowered compared to the Evo, i'll go with the snappier of the two.
Thank you!
As far as I know, the EVO 3D is pretty much identical hardware to the Sensation. And it also runs Sense 3.0. Check here for a comparision: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3901&idPhone2=3875
With a custom Sense ROM, it is much more smooth.
Really don't see why the EVO 3D performance would be THAT much better then the Sensation...
The touchscreen isn't a problem. The only issues seem to be on the lockscreen, so it's software.
I don't see the reason either (apart from 1gb ram over 768mb) but apparently the Evo runs soomther plus i hear the sensation starts to show lag over time...
anyways, evry review says evo is snappier... i just wonder whether thi sis soething that can be fixed by updates or if it is due to bad hardware
My experience is limited to the Sensation only, but:
1. Yes. Annoyingly so. Stock performance on the Telstra model isn't very good. I've used three units and all have been identical. Once you S-OFF, install a custom ROM and a custom kernel, the problem is lessened somewhat. Sense 3.0 seems to underpin all the problems with this device.
2. Completely random. Out of the dozen or so people I know who own Telstra units, I am the only one with a 'good' Sharp panel. There's not a lot of difference in the picture quality of both screens, but there is a definite difference in the ghosting while scrolling. Mine's better, but it's still there. Looks to me like a refresh rate issue, but I'm not sure. Apparently the digitiser can 'de-sensitise' over time, I've had mine a fortnight and no issues as of yet.
3. I find the Sensation's battery life admirable. After a moderate day's use I get home with 80-60% remaining. I don't OC, I use WiFi all day at home and HSPA when I'm out, make a few calls, send maybe 80 texts, download a few apps and listen to music for an hour or so. Even after a solid hour of continuous Market browsing, I'd reportedly lost <10%.
Good luck in your choice!
Those side-effects are all results of Sense. Just install CyanogenMod or any other AOSP ROM (when they're released) for a much, much better experience.

Absolutely.
I've never been a fan of CyanogenMod, but I will say that I am very much looking forward to it becoming available for the Sensation. The Alpha AOSP ROM looks promising also!
Thank you very much juzz86 and the others. Your post was very helpful. The thing is, I WANT Sense 3.0. If it was for the hardware alone, I'd go with the SGSII, although it's butt-ugly and feels like a child's toy in your hand. The Sensation's hardware is not so sensational when you compare it to other flagship phones. It's Sense that is making me want a HTC phone, but if the darn device can't handle it, despite dual core fanfare, I don't want it.
I'm so disappointed in this device It should have been everything the SGSII is, but with better design and Sense on top.
Anyways, the Evo seems to deal just fine with Sense 3.0 (at least that's what I read). I think I will give it a shot then, but not before I actually had the device in my hands. I'm a Pperson that is rather careless with it's phone. My iphone survived just fine because of a rubber case that saved it many times. But The Evo has ONE big glass plate in front of the two cam lenses... one unfortunate drop and goodbye picture taking.
I will have to think about that and see how the device actually feels...

Sounds like a plan. Don't drop the coin on it unless you're happy (only stupid people do that... ).
A recommendation: If you love Sense, and daily performance is more important to you than what looks good on paper, the Incredible S is an extremely good choice. It's 'just' a single-core, and it runs an older Sense, but it absolutely runs rings around the Sensation. The only real difference between the Sense version is the lockscreen, which is the only 'plus' I've come across in Sense 3.0
Thx for the advice, but I think it's rather stupid to buy a single core mobile in the age of dualcore processors and quadcore soon to be unleashed onto the world. I don't care if my Lambo is slower compared to a F1 Ferrari, but that don't mean I 'd go with a Fiat too
One more question regarding the lag/slowness of the phone: Is it sluggish out of the box or does it's performance degrade over time? How bad is it?
I often hear people complain about ceratin bugs, but only few seem to feel bothered by the performance...

For me it was slow out of the box. But I just flashed InsertCoin and it's very smooth compared to stock. CM7 will be even smoother
Swyped from my HTC Sensation
I don't know whether I should be happy or afraid because of that :O
Will CM7 still have Sense 3.0 or is it something completly different? I'm new to andorid, sry have no clue about it... Just saw that InsertCoin still has it.
I just read that the European Version of the Evo 3d isn't h4ackable as of now Different bootloader version or sumthin...
Yeah great, now I'm reconsidering the Sensation with a custom ROM. Geez this is getting old now...

CM7 will not have Sense at all. Most of the current crop of ROMs available still have Sense - even those that offer a 'sense-less' option still have the underlying frameworks included.
For me it was untolerable out of the box. I'm very susceptible to lag though.
I stick by my recommendation of a good single-core over a dual-core at this point. If it's fluid and quick in everyday operation, do you really need anything else? It's all just hype at this point, and the real-life benefits of dual cores aren't here yet.
I've ditched my Sensation for a Sharp SH-12C and it stomps all over it with just a single core and it does (pretty cool) 3D to boot. Pretty hard to come by, but so far a very polished package, and I'm getting much more enjoyment from it than from the Sensation.
I'm a big fan of stock android. I love cm can't wait for it to become available. That would definitely speed up things. Not sure I care about sense.
On another note I completely abuse my phone as far a use goes. WiFi on all day now Bluetooth too. I get 5.5hrs on a full charge. But again I completely abuse my phone. I listen to music all damn day I have a car charger so I'm happy and love my phone.

I was sick of waiting and got the sensation yesterday. Haven't had too much time to spend with it but so far things are looking good, and it's fast, I see no lag. Only thing that's bothering me is te free memory, which is somewhere around 100mb usually. that's kinda lame. Why on earth did HTC not include simply 1gig?
No I wonder which rom to install. I figure crystal pyramid isn't too bad?

Task Manager is showing the wrong amount of RAM, go to Settings-Applications-Running Services and check there. I agree it should have been 1 GB though
For a ROM I recommend InsertCoin 2.3.4 because it's very fast However, maybe you will like another one better, so try them out and use the one you like best.

Glad to hear you got a good one mate, nice job. I was also a bit skeptical of the reported RAM under the task switcher, seemed very low. As stated above, it appears to be a bit off. Uninstalling Sense actually freed up about 80MB for me, so hopefully something like AOSP will free up even more and make it really sing.
Crystal Pyramid is very nice. You won't be disappointed with any of the custom Sense ROMs at all, they're all nice and slick.
Enjoy!
I also have problems with the fact that the phone is so slow, and i was expecting much much more from it,i couldn't wait to finally get my hand on a Sensation .I have the stock rom with no modifications, but my Desire HD was also stock and it worked perfect, with no lag.I was playing Angry Birds Rio yesterday and the phone had lots of lags(like a video with low frame rate),and there wasn't any running program in the background .The Desire HD never had this problem, even if there were programs running in the background, the phone worked flawlessly.I am starting to regret that i sold the desire hd and bought the Sensation.

NEED an HONEST USER opinion PLEASE ^^,

ive posted a soliciting opinion in the galaxy s II forum..of corz most of the answers was inclined to having a galaxy s2..
im torn to choosing between htc sensation and sgs2.
ive read many users opinion and complaint regarding so many issues about htc sensation..one of which is the "death grip" on wifi radio.some are the unresponsive touchscreen and the screen acquiring dust overtime...compared to sgs2 yellowish tint problem and the back side being very hot..
so i want to solicit opinions to the real htc sensation user before buying it..viewing angle is not an issue for me coz i really dont want others on my side to see what im doing with my phone specially when im texting or something..
so if any of u has a hands on with htc sensation and the sgs2..please i need ur help..im using xperia arc as of now and want to buy a phone with dual core cpu ^^,
thanks and more power
Working in a mobile shop I get to play with phones all day. When it come to death grip all smart phones have it sensation and gs2 included. I chose the sensation purely on the build quilty. The galaxy s 2 is plasticy and feels cheap but the screen is amazing. When it come to faulty units HTC has less issues than other manufactures and I see less returns on them too.

Honestly it's really hard to pick between either.
I honestly went with the Sensation because I like HTC due to their customer service. They were friendly to me and replaced parts on my Touch HD. After heavy usage and heat it went crazy and then HTC fixed it for me even though I bought it internationally and shouldn't have gotten any warranty.
That's not to say Samsung has horrible customer service, it's just after that I very much stayed with HTC.
I could be a rare case though.
I own both phones and without question IMO, the sgs2 is the best android phone available. I do like the build quality of the Sensation better but I don't care how it feels I only care about how it works.

ok..im aware that using benchmarks, etc, sgs2 is really the best..but when im watching reviews, send UI is somewhat on the plus side for me compared to sgs2 touchwiz..im not sure coz honestly i havent held any one of the 2 phones yet..i hope soon coz im really planning to buy one..
since u own both these device, did u xperince a lag using htc sensation?and on ur recommendation, u would recommend sgs 2 basing on the overall user experience?
Benchmarks mean nothing.

I bought Sensation, because I love good built phones (I don't want to pay 450€ for mobile phone, which is from cheap plastic...) . And because I prefer Sense to TouchWiz.
But anyway, I have a suggestion for you. Flip a coin and say that head is Sensation, and number is SGS2. And when the coin will be in air, you will know which side you hope to be. And then buy one phone, which you are hoping to fall. And not the one that really falls =)
Hope it helps
Sensation vs SGS2
I bought my sensation because:
Stylish (not similar to other devices- ex. apple suing samsung)
Sense UI (best UI, hands down)
Power consumption
Screen (Less power consumption)
Built Quality
P.S.
Death grip can only happen if intentionally done (check youtube)
SGS2 screen technology (AMOLED) "drawbacks include reduced brightness and colors that are often over-saturated. OLED screens also suffer an awkward aging effect, where the red, green and blue sub-pixels will deteriorate and lose efficiency at different rates, which causes brightness and color consistency to worsen over time. While improvements are being made, it's important to understand that this display technology is still relatively immature." ....Engadget
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/engadget-primed-all-mobile-displays-are-not-created-equal/
If you can, go to the store and try both. You will see which one you like better

I was actually torn between getting these two, at one stage I placed an order for the SG2 - lucky paypal was being slow with giving me my money from the sale of my iPhone - Thus after a day I cancelled the order and re-ordered the Sensation purely for the qHD, aluminium unibody and build quality along with what I thought and hoped would be the faster phone!
Hopefully over the coming months the gap will close between the two phones, remember that at 1.5GHz this phone benchmarks better that the SG2 and HTC under clocked it to 1.2GHz, also in benchmarks the phone is pushing something like 25% more pixels

thanks bro..im just thinking regarding the back cover..the upper lip of the cover is like coversing the upper part of the phone right?when covering it, the upper part of the back cover that is covering the upper part is sealed well?i mean dust will not likely to go inside freely?and also to the side?that is one thing im worried about coz i dont want dust to go inside the phone for example..as what others are saying that there are dust inside the screen specifically...

Dust will go inside the phone from the top and from the camera holes. I clean the inside 1's a week, but dust does not go inside the screen. the good thing about the sensation design is that you can replace the cover with a new one if you damaged it and it will be like new as long as you don't damaged the screen.
I think you should go to a store and play with both phones and decide for yourself which one you like best. Both are great phones with plus and minuses. If you like the design and plastic build of the SGS2 then buy it. I would have bought the SGS2 if it was designed like the sensation.

I have tried very hard to try to recreate this "death grip" and I cannot do anything to lose signal! I wouldnt even put that into your equation right now. As far as the screen, my screen is very responsive an accurate but I do have a bit of dust under it but that is more a minor annoyance. I am a little bias as I am a sensation owner, but Im just saying, I use to be a stock android guy and hated sense, but sense 3.0 is bomb! I would take the sensation over the sgsII almost any day just because of sense 3.0. (Its that good) And then again everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I've have owned the sgs2 and currently have the sensation.
The only reason I changed over is cos I missed sense UI, if that isn't a problem for you then I'd say get the galaxy s2.
Galaxy s2 is faster, web browsing is faster, the camera and colours are brill, the speaker is louder and in my opinion better.
I've noticed my sensation hangs on web pages, apps don't open as quick.
Im not sure if I'm correct on saying this but to me it feels that sense 3.0 isnt supposed to run on this device even though my old desire hd handled it flawlessly.
I understand when people say that touchwiz looks very iphonish, and I agree also.
The one thing that bugged me with the galaxy s2 is defo the fact there is no notification light.
I'm gonna finish now and will probably get flamed but its just how I feel.
Like I said I come back to HTC cos I missed sense, but if ur not bothered bout UI then I'd say get galaxy s2.
Hopefully HTC bring out an update that would make my device fly.

No Flaming here just manlove I totally agree with you. I switched from touch HD to sensation. I would have bought SGS2 if it was designed differently. I think it is a great phone except I just can't get over the design, it is ugly
I'm going to speak primarily of the Sensation because I have no experience with the SGS2:
Pros:
Build quality (although I honestly don't get why people think this is such a big deal when a lot of people put covers on their phone)
UI (I need to stress that VISUALLY I like Sense 3.0, you'll see what I mean later)
qHD resolution
Design (basically same category as build quality)
Web browsing (qHD makes it really nice, and I've also read that the SGS2 doesn't automatically rewrap text when you zoom in/out like the Sensation does)
Cons:
Screen tech (I will never buy a LCD phone again; LCD is absolutely worthless in direct sunlight and bright areas and I can't see my phone's screen in said situations; and plus as SAMOLED+ technology matures they'll take care of problems like the yellowish tint)
Speaker (there is no way for me to put this other than to say the Sensation's speaker is absolutely ****ty; my brother's old MyTouch 4G has a WAY louder speaker and it's an older phone)
Processor (this is sort of a time-related thing, because in a technical sense the Sensation's chip actually has some advantages on paper like asynchronous cores; the problem is is that Gingerbread apparently doesn't have adequate dual-core support and I don't believe an asynchronous dual-core phone will do as well as a synchronous dual-core phone until ICS, but even then we'll have to see what does better)
UI (while I also put UI in the Pros section for its looks, I have to say that Sense 3.0 is laggy as **** on the Sensation and is not optimized; I'm saying this while I'm on one of the faster custom ROMs, which still is laggy; I don't like the looks of Touchwiz like many on here, but I would kill for its smoothness)
Camera (not that it's bad, it's quite good, but reviews are unanimous that the SGS2 camera is even better)
Internal memory (1 GB vs. 16 GB; need I say more?)
RAM (768 MB vs. 1 GB; again, need I say more?)
Deathgrip (I know people will say that all phones experience deathgrip issues, but I don't think most have it as bad as the Sensation does)
Battery (this is minor, because the battery life is pretty decent, but most top-line phones are coming out with upwards of 1700 mAh batteries these days)
That sums up my views, I may be missing a few points here and there. The only things I like about my Sensation are the design and build quality, the UI, and the qHD resolution. Otherwise, I honestly think that the Sensation was completely out-spec'd even at the time it came out.
I have Sensation for about three months now! I came from a HD2 ( a special case ) and i was expecting the most powerful smartphone in the world. At first i was disappointed (before S-off ). The lag that everyone is talking about WAS there! The phone wasn't really laggy but it was not as i expected. The apps were launching really fast but i knew it could get much better. The gs2 was at the time a lot faster. The normal user couldn't tell the difference and every day experience was the same if not better ( i prefer sense ui too ). I'm writing in the past tense because after the S-off and with a custom rom (IC 2.3.5) my Sensation is blazing fast ( almost as i want it to be ). Anyway, you should go and try both of them. GS2 is a great phone and if you choose to buy it you won't regret it. It's a matter of personal preference! I prefer HTC's quality, looks, qHD screen, customer service and Sense UI. You may prefer the Super Amoled Plus, more built in memory and RAM. It's your choice .
I love my Sensation. Bought 5 of them for the family. Haven't had any issues. Especially now that updates are out and bugs are getting fixed (not to mention custom roms), the Sensation is a super sweet phone.

Just bought a Sensation - advice and tips?

I've had the G2 for a year now, I'm not due for an upgrade with Tmo until this time next year but I've been thinking about getting a better, faster phone for a little while now. Since I'm not purchasing through tmo I decided to surf ebay for a good deal and I narrowed my choice down to the sensation as the best quality for the money and just scored one for $275. Seemed like a good deal since most of them tend to go for over $300, was it?
It hasn't been delivered yet, but I've got a few questions for you all:
1. I have 30 days to return it. What issues should I look for?
2. Seems many have issues with the lack of battery, what is a realistic expectation for hours of use?
3. I've been using a version of CM on my G2 (mexdroid, best G2 rom I've found yet) and was wondering if there are any specific "favorite" cm7 based rom's here? I've tried a couple different Sense roms and never really liked any of them.
Any other tips or pieces of vital information y'all can give me would be great. This was a tough choice for me as there seem to be a lot of people who have issues with the sensation, but I'm hoping they are the loud minority. Thanks all for the help ahead of time, hope to become a regular on here as I don't plan on getting another phone for at least another year.
Well if it's new you shouldn't root it otherwise you may not be able to return it
If not... check out the link in my sig. Root, unlock, custom ROM, overclock in 10 mins
Its used but the eBay vendor offers a 30 day return policy. I definitely plan on rooting it but like I said I'd like to try out a cyanogen based from. I will definitely give yours a try though thank you for the link.

maybe plus checking out the reception of wifi/gps/mobile signal
that should be about it..
anyway for battery can consider anker
I was just reading about the newest update that started yesterday? It shouldn't make a difference that I bought this phone used and not through Tmobile, should it?
If you're into Cyanogenmod, you may want to look elsewhere. I love CM, I do, but the official CM rom is still in it's alpha stages, and while it runs "good", it doesn't feel like the 1.2Ghz dual core it's suppose to be. There's one or two CM-based roms. One is called HyperSensation, and it's really lightweight and fast, but again, it's based off an alpha.
There's still great development going on, and we're guaranteed ICS from either HTC or the devs (crossing fingers for CM9 nightlies), but if you're a CM faithful, this might not be your phone.
Edit: Also, you'll need either an Anker or Chichitec 1900 mAh battery, you'll have a hard time without it.
Got my Sensation XE 2 weeks ago and compared to my good old Hero I had before, I really like it. You'll definitely benefit from rooting it. Installing a custom ROM is worth it, but personally I would stick to Sense 3.0, runs better imo.

I have to agree with this poster and add these few things.
* (My experience) screen protectors don't fit snugly due to cured glass.
* A bit laggy
* My volume rocker fell off after 3monts and had to get the whole back replaced.
* Battery sucks, but if you (fork over more loot to) buy a higher capacity one it works fine.
My advice is to either get the Amaze or just wait until march/april when they will be rolling out an Ice Cream Sandwich phone for HTC. And to be fair, the phone is a "nice" phone, but it is not the best phone in its class spec wise.
Steve, while I appreciate the suggestion it's to late as I've already purc
hased the sensation. Honestly looking at the specs and in store the amaze didn't seem all that different. The only real improvement I saw is the camera button and that's not a very big deal to me. As for ics I thought sensation is on the list of phones getting it?
Mine has been good for me and the price at 275 is decent -if your into cm7 well as stated before its still alpha and it looks like they are more focus on CM9 at this time to bad your not a big fan of sense as there are many good builds running sense with great battery life-the phone is barely 6 months old here so there is much to come and yes it is on the list to get an OTA of the ICS
DUST under the screen and the power button issue are all I have faced I would check it before I do anything with a black background under sunlight to see if the are any specs in it
Mexdroid kicks ass for sure I have a friend running that on his nothing like that over here sad to say
For the money, that seems like a great deal. And you should get the OTA update as long as it's a valid ROM. I have flashed through about 6 different ROM's for the Sensation and settled on the InsertCoins one. Quick and easy, but still has Sense goodies I tend to like. Rooting it is EZ, and hardware should keep it viable for a while. You should enjoy this device!

there are very big differences, spec wise with the phones. the top three are:
1. the Amaze has 16 gig memory on board whereas the Sensation only comes with 8 gig card. If you listen to music and watch movies like me that is huge.
2. the Amaze has a full gig of RAM whereas the Sensation only has 768. The standard for most high end smartphones is 1 gig and it does make a difference speed wise.
3. Last, but definitely not least, since most complaints about phones have to do with battery life, the Amaze has almost 200 more mA than the Sensation.
You can scratch my original reasons, those were just the tip of the iceberg, these are the reasons why I would steer people away from the phone.
HOWEVER, you already got it so its water under the bridge, enjoy my friend. Just wanted to clarify.
With regards to ICS, yes, from my understanding the Sensation will get it in four to five months. However, by that time, HTC and other companies will already have phones that will be made with it. I have an upgrade due to me in march so I will hold out and wait to see what the offerings are come June. I am sure that the ICS upgrade will work fine on the sensation, but if the are getting rid of buttons and overhauling the whole thing then I want the full experience.
Vibrant to Sensation
Prior to my Sensation I had a Samsung Vibrant rooted with CM7. Once I arrived on the Sensation forum it was evident the Sense Roms were by far the most used.
I have been using Android Revolution HD 4.1.8 Sense 3.5 (the latest) and I have never looked back. I recommend that you at least try one of these great Roms from a fantastic developer.
Good luck in whatever you choose. You have purchased a very nice phone.

This is a decent one to start with... Some problems with gps (it takes a while to lock) and it is actually no longer supported by the developer... However, i still use it often, and its pretty slick. I would at least check it out if I were you.
Well, I've had my sensation for a day now, so far so good. Even though it's used it has a perfect screen, believe me I examined it thoroughly and couldn't find anything wrong with it. How long does the "dust under screen" issue generally take?
Also, so far so good as far as power button goes but it is going to take some time to get used to not having a trackpad to wake the phone. The speaker is equivalent if not a little better than my G2's, and compared to my OC'd G2 (usually had it around 1.4) it's faster in stock form.
I haven't rooted it yet, I'm going to use it for a month before I do that. From what I've read it seems most of you generally OC it to around 1.5?
I have a case on the way, it is definitely skinnier than the G2 and my big clumsy hands have a little trouble holding on to it so the case will be a definite improvement. For those of you who have a case on, have you noticed any decline in signal strength or gps?
As for my update question earlier, I shouldn't have worried. Within 10 minutes of putting my sim card in and turning it on I received the update to 1.50 (the latest one, right?) and it successfully installed with no issues. I still need to read up on what that update brought with it, but was one of the things a newer radio?
Sense is growing on me, for the past week I've been using my G2 with a sense 2.1 rom, so I haven't ruled that out for a DD for my sensation. I'm going to try out several different ones but I'll probably start out with Revolution and maybe Hypernosense and go from there.
Appreciate all the help, you and the G2 people are pretty nice. Seems like some of the forums have some angry people in them, it'd be an interesting sociological study to see the personalities and ages of various people matched with various phones.
advice: return it
i don't mean to be a party pooper, but return it while you can. get the SG2. i have one HTC sensation and the screen doesn't work anymore.it just turns on and that's about it. the Volume, another chapter entirely. works when it feels like. i have tried the ground contact thing, no luck. its a horrible phone. basically wasted £275 on it.
it hasnt worked well for one single day. its one issue after another. After 4 months, basically a brick with bright light in front
While I appreciate the thought, I'm going to be keeping it until/unless I run into any issues. As far as getting the sg2 goes, if I'd wanted to spend another $150 I could get one but that's a lot of money, at least for me. I did only get 8 hours of use out of the sensation today with stock battery, but I bought an Anker 1900 so I'll see what improvement that gives me in the next few days.

I don't mind it dude, the phone works well for me, has no dust or other issues, AHD Rom, MX video player works, calls are nice n clear, backstab hd works and music sounds good on my bose mie2 headphones.
Battery can be better, but I have a dock and 2 extra Anker batts off ebay for 30quid.
Well, welcome to the Sensation.
Re: a couple of things from your last post
The dust under the screen thing doesn't have to happen if you buy a case that covers the volume rocker. I use a plain jane Incipio case and it's served me well. No dust under the screen and since it's a little stiff it buffers the power button a little... hence the double press issue just doesn't happen to me unless I take the case off. Plus it's made of this odd rubbery compound stuff, so it bounces off of the floor nicely.
A lot of people OC to 1.5. Or you could do the complete opposite, dump the laggy Sense launcher and just underclock instead. I run my Sensation at 972 MHz with DX Launcher as default and it's great. Helps a lot with battery life for daily use.
1.50 update does not contain a new radio AFAIK.
When you're ready, look into custom kernels and undervolt as far as your phone can handle. Your battery will love you for it.

What do you think about this phone? (Sensation/XE/4G)

What do you think about the phone now? and What did you thought about this phone when you bought it?
Average phone, definitely not top of the line performance.
Software features (sense and all) are good, but the device lacks the performance punch that it should have.
Hardware quality is above average as well.
After ICS, although the overall UI feel is less sluggish, the phone has lost its performance, specially while playing HD videos.
I would say, not that well supported by the company, specially in India.
Final word: Not buying again from HTC.
better than the iphone 4s.

the Sensation is a good phone, no doubt. the only thing I dislike about it is the way the antennas are built into the back case...
A phone that was underspecd from the start. Less RAM than the competition, unbelievably lacking in storage, and S3 was the worst SoC of the 2011 dual core generation. Lag city. Many people avoid new S4 phones just because their experience with an S3 phone was so bad (which sucks, because S4 is actually a good SoC aside from the GPU). The mono block design turned out to be a sham, and instead we got a completely removable back that led to radio issues and a death grip problem worse than most phones. Add to that power button problems and dust under the screen, and I'm wondering where this HTC build quality is that I based my decision to get this phone on.
The good? The camera is pretty good. The qHD resolution was above average at the time. I find the 4.3" format factor perfect. Visually I think the Sensation is one of the best looking phones of all time. I would enjoy it if I didn't have high standards, and I simply can't stand how much it lags and how hard the screen is to see outside.
Sent from my Sensation using xda app-developers app
Screen is hard to see outside I agree but the worst issue for me it's speaker sound is horrible...
Camera does a good job in daylight low lights aren't so good however,
At the time I bought it, it was indeed a good phone but I think that now there are much much better phone's out in the market..
I think it still does a decent job performance wise and I don't face laggs
Now I think this phone is getting old and I should buy something new but the development is quite good so I'll stay for a while.
Last thing : battery is sh*t even whit extended battery's..

I got this phone a few weeks ago because it was cheap and has a removable battery/sd card (as opposed to the newer ONE series).
What I like about it - Feels good in my hand (weight, robustness, etc), the haptic feedback is much better than the competitors', a large community and many ROMs to explore, battery life (with an aftermarket battery).
Don't like - Screen viewing angle is narrow, a bit too big (I prefer screens 4 inch and under for a phone).
All in all - It's a decent phone for it's price.
That's my opinion.
There are some better ones now, but it holds up well against many others!
It's a cool phone. S3 is a decent processor, I don't find it to be the worst of 2011 though. From experience, I would say it goes Samsung's Exynos 2011 > S3 > Whatever the hell OMAP was out at the time > Tegra2.
Sense is just too slow, that's the problem. I don't mean a bloat issue, I've debloated Sense - removing about 200MB of uselessness out of Sense and it doesn't speed up. Forget Sense 4 being "much lighter than previous versions" too. It's not - it's just that the first phones to have it feature S4 processors that keep up really well. Check out a video of the One V - same old Sense.
Take the S3 processor and slap on some AOSP like CM or AOKP, and the phone flies.
The best phone in the world imo.

Not buying again from HTC
(less battery, RAM...)
Its a cool phone, then the custom roms made it cooler..
I actually got this phone as a replacement for mytouch 4g out of warranty so i only paid $5 for it. I gotta say i really love it, I don't have battery issues (lasts me a full day), no lag (senseless), its fast to me. Definitely not the best with new phones coming out every month, but i like it
When I first got this phone, I was completely underwhelmed. It lagged hard on stock gingerbread, had zero aosp support, signal was poor, wifi deathgrip was almost a deal breaker and battery life was crap. Add in sense restarts every other day and I was ready to return my phone for... a G2X. Lol!
Nowadays, ICS has improved the battery life a lot and our devs have come a long way in making the Sensation smoother and more attractive. So I guess I don't hate my Sensation like I used to, but I rather like it now. It's not the fastest phone out there, but it does what I need it to do. Poor signal and deathgrip are still there, but meh whatever. I like my Sensation enough to stick with it until my contract is up.
Not the best phone, but has a wealth of rom support. I have a Samsung galaxy s2 that's just sitting on the shelf because I enjoy the Rom support on the sensation more than actual hardware difference.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
its a good phone overall but the things that make me hate it are the antennas because of the deathgrip issue and also the speakers are too quiet.
Thanks to the roms and mods available I still love my sensation! I get bored with one thing I just change it! Love the fact It's highly customizable ! After rooting I really started to love it again thanks to the developers !

If you compare with Iphone 4s:
Advantage: Bigger screen, Rom customization, multi tasking. Awesome HTC interface!!
Disadvantge: Battery is not good, back cover problem.
Comparing to any android phone out there, Sensation is top notch.
I've waited 4 months for this phone to come out after hearing/seeing rumors everywhere that finally an 4.3in Android phone is coming out on T-Mobile.
I love it, still till this day after using it for 1 year, I love this phone. The battery is awesome if you install custom roms/kernels plus the anker battery.
Love the screen size and resolution. Form factor; love it, slim and tall.
It's still not as smooth as Samsung phones, but **** with AOSP roms, and overclocked kernels and custom roms, you'll get there.
Cons, RAM ****ing seriously HTC? 768MB of ram meanwhile the GalaxyS2 has 1GB? The dust underneath the glass.
Other than that, love the fact that the whole back cover is the housing for the phone, if it ever gets any deep scratches, all I need to do is swap out the back cover.
Wrong thread.
