I hate it but every company makes apps for the iphone. Windows mobile always left in the cold when it comes to new applications. Random companies make apps for the iphone. The Weather Channel, CNBC, eBay, NBA, MLB, ESPN, Showtime plus thousands of other companies choose to make apps for the iphone only. I hate it but when my contract runs out i might swich to the iphone. Anyone feeling this way?

Most of those "apps" are just links to websites... like Widgets in WM6.5. Actually if you use the web browser Iris... it will display the iPhone version of the site. Or you could just make a widget of iPhone version from the iPhone URL.
Aside from the few cool games the iPhone has, it doesn't offer anything extraordinary.

Mmm, gotta disagree with you on that. Are you speaking from experience? Do you own an iPhone? I agree with the OP, I've been frustrated by the useful apps that have come out for the iPhone while WM has been all but forgotten.

You could switch to a nice android device. I really like my g1 quite a bit. The app store doesn't have the volume of apps that the iphone one does, but if you factor out all the sound boards and fart machines, there isn't a huge difference.
Also, android is a platform, not a single device. I'm betting long term, you will see android win market share. It wouldn't be the first time that apple lost out with a closed, proprietary system. They did the same thing when competeing with IBM and Microsoft, and lost out there too.
I hate the Iphone, not because I'm jealous.

Also, then think about how much money you will spend with your iphone for mainly crappy apps that people make just to make money... and remember that the only way to customize it is to hack it, and risk breaking it... and even still it isnt very customizable.

Android is gaining a number of apps in the Android Market. Some of the apps mentioned by the OP are now available on Android and more a coming online all the time.

took a while to get into the scene / getting around the more restricted OS, but i'm glad i did. looking forwards to running android on my kaiser, but i'll probably never go back to winmo (unless 7 is worth it).

Gotta say, there's still a place in my heart for WinMo, and I'm really looking forward to WM7, hoping not to be disappointed. But once you jailbreak an iPhone, it's superior in basically every way. I'm sick to death of Job's draconian resistance to JB, but fortunately the community has some geniuses who can tell him where he needs to go stick his head.
Valkryomnia may hate it, but that's only because he clearly doesn't have a jailbroken iPhone, because all the things he's talking about are laughably false except for the non-removable battery and memory. However, those aren't big deals for me because at this point the choice is 32GB of non-removable memory on iPhone vs 16GB of removable on WM. Not a hard choice for me. And as for the battery, I probably will get a new phone by the time it dies anyway, so... meh.
It's funny, but at this point the thing I miss most about WM is having to fiddle around with it to get it to work. With a JB iPhone I really don't have to, not because you can't customize it (you pretty much fully can), but because it really just works. And giving up the fun of fiddling with it is a small price to pay for also giving up the frustration of the constant crashes, memory problems, incompatibilities, abandoned software that has promise but never gets finished, flashing, reflashing, and flashing, flashing, flashing constantly, etc. It's just a world of difference.
I jumped from the n-gage into the WM world and its disappointing at best in the games deppartment.
Emus and ports are good, but the iphone games are looking better each day.
Plus, 3 years ago when the iphone came out, M$ made a lot of promisses that WM could be as good as and i havent seen any yet.
I still remenber a youtube video showing the (soon to come out) Windows Vista gadgets running on the WM... where are they?
I love WM and sometimes i miss a FUN Application and Games that iPhone have but at all i can say that the iPhone is made for the Kids for peoples betwen 14 and 18 years Because the WM is more for Bussines Peoples etc.
So our HTC Phones are more Stylish for Example i use Blackstone.. we can`t even compare iPhone Vs Blackstone.
So if someday HTC start to support the device better and make new apps often some for bussines some just for fun... you know what will heppand.
I only don`t know one thing.
If i was a owner of HTC and i want to Grown Alot alot more... the 1st thing that i will do is More Support with ROM`s with Apps i can tell you with sure that if WM have the same FUN apps like iPhone and even better NO ONE WILL BUY an iPhone!!!
And i wonder why HTC don`t kick this iPhones from the Market they can do it very easy.
Even that we dont have alot WM apps made by HTC or other i still prefer to have a stylish bussines device that have many futures and potential in the future

I've been a windows mobile user for a couple of years and while I love tweaking everything and writing apps in c#, I'm quickly growing tired of it falling so far behind the iphone and android. 6.5 is really just a new start menu and lock screen with WM2003 underneath. Back when I had a tytn I loved flashing new roms, but recently I've lot interest in it, especially when the benefits aren't really that great in terms of features.
My contract is up in January and at the moment I'm leaning towards an iphone. I like the look of android (plus I would be able to write apps for it in java), but it doesn't feel that complete to me.
My main uses for a phone are:
Web browsing - nothing beats the iphone here. Opera is nice but its painfully slow. Opera mini is also very good but the rendering doesn't look that nice.
Facebook - the iphone app is by far the best, and the windows mobile one is a joke.
Twitter - there are decent clients for all 3
Email (not push) - Pocket outlook isn't finger friendly, so its iphone or android here, but I haven't seen the android email client that much.
Writing apps - I'm happy to write java or C#, and hate objective C
Random apps - The iphone is a clear winner here
Golf scorecards with GPS - I wrote one for windows mobile, but nothing I can write could compare to apps like airvue for the iphone
Satnav - I love igo, so windows mobile wins here
Music - Once more, the iphone blows everything else away (S2P is nice, but still laggy on my diamond).
I think that if the HD2 was android then it would be a serious contender, but unless anything amazing comes out within the next 3 months I'll be jumping ship to the iphone (and probably jailbreaking it straight away).
Going back a year, I was one of the 'iphone haters', and I still hate the mac fanboy mentality of apple is best whilst blocking out all forms of logic and reason. Now I just want something which does everything I need easily and quickly.

same here.. i owned a o2 mini for years now using elf but when my contract finish.. hmmm 75% chance i will get iphone - hopefully by then it will have removable storage and radio..

I'm not an apple fanboy, I have an ipod touch but have never owned an iphone because I like to customise my phones too much & I know you can't really do that with an iphone. Having said that, I think it's so stupid how some people pretend that the iphone isn't a good phone just because they have some sort of issue with apple or the number of people that use their products. Say what you want about the closed OS or whatever, but I don't see how you can deny that the iphone completely changed the cell phone business and for the average user there are few phones that are as easy to use and have as an asthetically pleasing interface as the iphone.
I do love the HTC design and style, but why is it always bad on hardware?
The ram and speed upgrades are always small and the video drivers are sad at best.
Its true, the WM ppcs were made for business, and never had a real "gamer liberation"... that, for me, is the problem with them.
I wanted a cheap ppc that could be, like the magician (qtek s100/s110), way ahead of its time.
All the phones I see around me are slower than my magician from 2003.

Yes.. befor more than a year when i was looking for a new Device just to say that here in Bulgaria we don`t have so good contracts etc so when you want a new Device you just need to Buy it by yourself Cash.
So from the time i start to use Mobile Phones i always own a Nokia and i always use the latest models befor to move in WM i was on Symbian and i use the Nokia almost everyone from N series.. but befor a year i was thinking i need something new something diferent and powerfull...
and the Blakcstone just come out on the market this days and he amazed me with the Screen with thedesign and with many other things...
So the Blackstone was more expensive than the iPhone 3G here and many peoples told me better buy a HTC device this Blackstone ROCK some peoples say buy iPhone so beause everyone talk about iphone and i want something diferent that iphone because i hate when everyone use the same thing.... and the iphones become something like a madness i decide to buy my Blackstone and here cost me $900 around the iPhone 3G cost on the same time around $600 so i buy the expensive one HTC and after more than a year of use... im feeling a bit desapointed for this.

Nobody do anything for WM all USA companyes make apps for iPhone so in internet they are thousend and thousend and everyday something new.

oh really? Please explain. No you cant, that is completely false. Show me an alternate UI? So me multi tasking? Show me anything other than the possibility of changing an icon lol. The iphone is an app launcher, plain and simple. You simply cant customize it, you can just put different apps on it.

I have been recently thinking about changing my HTC Touch Cruise for something newer. To my mind obviously came: HTC HD2, iPhone, Blackberry Storm2.
I know that specifications-wise, HTC wins. BUT...
I have recently experienced the new Blackberry and realized that: the operation system works much quicker and nicer than Windows which HTC uses. It also seems to have less problems -> my current HTC needs a good hard restart once a week or so, because it freezes on more demanding films or some music.
I thought that Windows has much more applications available - well, I am not so sure any more once I realized that thesaurus.com produced their dictionaries for... iPhone and Blackberry. Windows has lost its market and is not taken into account by the newest developers.
I am also wondering whether 4.3'' isn't a little bit too much -> I won't be able to put it into my pocket any longer!
What do you think? HTC seems to have created a very beautiful palmtop, full of great specifications but it has also committed one crucial mistake - it used Windows...
I would be grateful if you could share with me your opinions. Maybe my fear is unjustified and the newest HD2 works perfectly in all the aspects easily beating the competition?

I have been a WM fan for the last 5 years or so and have become disilusioned with the OS. I too was looking for a change and had been watching the LEO. This is indeed a good hardware spec, but imho let down by WM6.5. I decided that I was after a better consumer experiance and opted for the iPhone. Everyone raves about them for a long time now so I decided (after much researching) that I would try one. I have not been let down by it yet. Mind you, I've only had it 3 weeks. I'm taking a punt that in 18 months or so, WM will have caught up or Andriod will have matured, but until then, I'll take a walk on the dark side.
So far I'm loving the fact that is just seems to work and it integrates with my car hifi perfecly. I can now play music and do hands free over Bluetooth. Under WM I could only do handsfree. Surfing the internet is now almost as easy as on my desktop. Safari browser beats anything else I've tried so far. The on screen keyboard was a worry at first, but it's easy to use, especialy in landscap (I have big thumbs). As a music player, well it beats WM any day of the week.
I know I will eventualy hit it's limitations, and when I do I'll consider jailbreaking, much like using custom ROMs from here realy. Untill then I'll keep an eye on the mobile development and look forward to seeing what happens in 18 months.

Personally I'd go for the HD2, as I rank spec more than software. The iPhone is a but too common and its pricing is a far too high for what you get (mins and txts etc). Blackberry has the same problem its too common, I know loads of people with Blackberrys who only use them for Facebook, but if your the kind of person who send and receieves loads of e-mails get a BB as they do it better than WinMo and iPhone.

Well I have been WM for several years and thought I would give the iPhone a trial. A BIG MISTAKE. Its dredful and im getting a HD2 next week.
I thought i'd add my comments to this, i've been predominantly symbian s60 / win mob for years now due to the fact that they "do" everything. But i think its fair to say that windows in all guises comes with the fact that as soon as you start to ask a bit of it, it sticks it's fingers up at you and stops working (symbian too, but to a lesser degree). Usually resulting in a reboot. I recently had an upgrade to do so i started researching into what i might get. In the end, after a spate with symbian, i v much wanted a win mo device but was ever so curious about the iphone. So many ppl couldn't be wrong, right? I was also deeply tempted by the blackberry bold too. I ended up going for the iphone as the upgrade and bought a TP2 as well. I just couldn't do the iphone thing on its own in case i hated it.
Pleasingly, i don't. The iphone is everything a win mo phone isn't, and vica versa. The iphone is completely dependable, never misses a beat, does what it does do perfectly and apart from some of the crazy apps, completely dull. It is frustratingly good. Even multitasking isn't really much of an issue due to push notifications and the like. I'd love to say the screen res is an issue but it never is. Safari is in a league of it's own. But it is dull. I use it as my everyday phone because it's dependable, but i use my TP2 to mess about with, i've had that many different ROM's on it it's silly, i follow forum progress with different things going on with bated breath, excited to see if they can pull this new rom off, or a linux port. It's exciting, i can modify the hell out of it and personalise it my way. I can send files via bluetooth without having to jump through hoops (unlike the iphone).
So, it comes down to what you want it to do, and if you can put up with less or more customization. There is a lot to choose from out there now and it's hard to decide. Look at the palm pre, and droid, and what about the n900 0n maemo?? Whatever you decide, you'll end up with a really good bit of kit, cos the mobile world it going potty with new stuff at the mo.
Just one last note, in defence of win mo, it may be getting a bit left behind in terms of bling, but it still remains one of the most functional os's out there, it's just that the young guns have caught up now.
Hmmm as I don't like iPhone (because everyone has it) and I wouldn't go Sony Ericsson (because I don't believe in their great ability of doing palmtops), I am personally trying to find reasons for continuing with HTC.
1.Is Windows 7 going to be released "soonish", so that if I buy HD2 now I might get some (hopefully) acceptable o/s?
2.There is also Droid Eris / HTC Dragon / HTC Passion / whatever it is called. If it is "HD2 on Google Android 2.0" then the question arises:
------is it just the case of software? If yes, I assume xda-masters will sooner or later allow easy migration between these two systems, or are there any technological obstacles? If this were true then this would be the best option -> One phone if you get bored - you can always swap to another o/s...
3. What was the market response to Android 2.0? What do you guys think about it, as compared with Windows?
I'm using Android at the moment having used WM for the past few years. It's version 1.5 and I'm loving it. Can't wait for 2.0 to come out for the Hero.

I think its funny that every ppc that htc release, we seem to have this debate "blah" vs iphone, or is "blah" the iphone killer, this has been going on since the touch diamond, personaly i dont think any ppc can be compaired to the iphone, as ppc's are tools with functionality where as the iphone is a toy, it has no real functionality, yeah it looks good and there are lots of apps availble for them but how many of them are useful? and as for "killing" the iphone its clear by now that it has a far too big a fan base to be killed off, anyway thats my 2 cents lol

I have 2 Windows phones and 2 Android phones and I can't think of a single thing the Windows phones do better than the Android phones.
Well, when I got my phone at T mobile today (I was tired of att and verizon, long story..) I asked for an android phone and I get home and see it's a windows phone...?
Mind you, I'm not surprised considering they didn't even know what GSM is when I asked if t mobile was gsm.
I LIKE the fact that it acts as a hot spot so what is FROYO?

Does it mean I liked the 8183? Nope and whoever the idiot is that wrote the software that only lets you use a FRACTION of the big a$$ screen to display info, phone numbers, names and such should be shot, SLOWLY!
You guys have NO idea how many countless hours I've spent in frustration, trying to find a way to SEE things on the screen with my $hitty eyesight and all because some moron is too stupid to figure out that MAYBE they should start with making the BASICS work on the phone.

Well, I loved MyPhone on Windows Mobile. And I just have my Android for 3 days, but I haven't found something as good and for free yet.
Next to that, I can't think of anything I missed yet. Even eBuddy managed to easily fulfill my needs of MSN/WLM. Even with offline messaging.
There are two things i don't like about android:
First, there isn't only one good videoplayer(ffmpeg is a must have!) EDIT: Rockplayer is a nice start, but the fps is ~100% lower than the ones i get with coreplayer
And i havent found something like Audiobooster.
Try both and take the OS which you prefer

there's a lot of things to look at but the best way to choose is this.
if you are running an app and it has issues or require a bit of memory, window will lock up and then you have to reset the phone.
with android you'll get a force close notification which you just ok it and keep using it with out having to reset.

OK, As a windows Fanboy turned android here is the main thing Windows does better than android: Multimedia!!
Android is still new to the game and in my opinion hasn't really got a good video and music player. There are some ones that can pass but compared to Windows and iphone they are not that great. On the flip side I plan on developing my own music player which counts for the openness of android. WinMo is arguably just as open BUT with them going a different direction with WM7 I had to jump ship. As for Androids advantages......everything else is just as good if not better than windows (except how they manage the SD card)
Well, the few minutes I've spent with the windows platform already makes me hate it. Whoever did the software for the HD2 is totally retarded. I couldn't even get myself out of whatever app happened to come on last night and I was about ready to throw this big piece of $hit out the window.
I now know what Froyo is and if I'm not mistaken, it'll have a wifi proxy which I guess it to be is that it acts like a hot spot which should put a damper on some of the greedy phone companies (IF it is released on their phones) like ATT who charges you another 30 bucks extra for connecting to your laptop.
That to me is bull**** and greed and IS costing them customers.
Verizon is better with that but I hate their support AND I think their coverage in my area is worse. The support is TOTALLY useless and I left them once because of it and I will AGAIN leave them I think and yes, mainly because of it.
I'll try the t mobile service out for a week or so and if the coverage is good, I'll return this locked piece of $hit and get me one of the unlocked phones from NEgri Electronics. If anyone hasn't heard of them yet (which kinda would surprise me) here they are...

For a buck fitty (not fifty, fitty, like fitty cents) I can get this proggy which could fix my problem but I can't do it on a locked phone. Well, they can ki$$ my ass then with all the restrictions. I'll get this one for example http://negrielectronics.com/touch-smartphone-unlocked-tmobile-2747.html , get me a monthly account instead and I can put anything I want on it. Now how the hell can I go wrong with that, AND, they're easier to sell should you want to get rid of them.
Put some of this stuff on it and some silicone case on it and you can sell it years later looking brand new which is what I did with my iPhone.
I'm going to wait for a week or so and decide if I like tmobile and if I do, I'll tell verizon where they can stick their phone.
Would you believe I had to make THREE attempts to get them to port my att number over and meanwhile, I'm paying ATT for the account. I even called and talked to VERIZON people to make sure it got done right and in BOTH cases, they screwed it up. I finally got it done the right IN The store, a WEEK after!
After all this crap AND a busted phone that was only two weeks old, I tried to get a free charging cable from one of the store manager, NOT a charger or the ac adapter thingie, just the stinkin' cable and he wouldn't even give me that. Now that is tacky and petty. Oh, the reason I wanted another cable was so I could keep one in the car cause that piece of $hit pre wouldn't hold a charge over 5-6 hours and let's not talk about TALKING time. This was a LITTLE talking and lots of stand by.
What a damn joke.
I like the pre platform and concept in general and I have several PDA's that are PALM but the PRE phone, they kinda dropped the ball on a little.
No on screen keyboard (now how hard is that to figure out), the actual keyboard should have been horizontal for size and the damn thing is a gas guzzler, AND, I don't see an option to keep the damn notifications from coming up and crowding your screen when you turn it on. Also, it's slow as $hit from when you click that you want the keypad till it finally opens up.
NO Predictive dialing and you can't get the beautiful HUGE clock to stay on top that I know of. Again, how hard is that to figure out? Does this take so long to program into the software? I mean, they almost went belly up. You'd think they had the TIME and STAFF to do things right. Sheesh!

That's not how business works. Any phone advertised on TV (like the Pre) is designed for general consumers (people who don't care about the things you're talking about). It would be a terrible business decision to spend more time and money incorporating things that 99% of their target market don't care about or don't even know they're missing. If you're posting on XDA you're probably a lot more tech savvy than the average consumer, thus phones marketed towards the average consumer won't have 100% of the features you request. I always like to buy phones that are rarer and not advertised, mainly because I like having stuff that other people don't have, but also because they usually end up being a cut above the rest of the phones on the market.

If I were you guiri_too, and can afford it, I'd order the Nexus One unlocked and as soon as it arrives, root the thing, put Froyo on it (if I could find it) and take that winblows phone back to T-Mobile. I can't believe they gave you that after asking for an Android phone. That has to be one of the dumbest salesmen ever! Or if you want to stay with T-Mobile and happen to like Sense (Espresso Sense), pick up the the MyTouch Slide. It has a keyboard, MS Exchange support and is pretty snappy to boot (speaking of boot, it only takes about a minute from hitting the power button to making a call). If you need a more business-like phone, I would suggest the Sprint Evo 4G. It's the same size as the HD2, 4.3", but it's Android. The UI looks like the HD2 as well (Sense), but it's a lot quicker and more stable. A friend of mine picked this up after having the Sprint Hero, which he got after the TouchPro (winmo) and couldn't be happier.
As far as the original question, I can only give you an anecdote; when I got my G1, my wife had a Wing which she hated. After a few months of watching me play with my phone all the time, and her Wing being replaced twice, she bought hers and was instantly hooked. We have been android fans ever since. So the advantages of Android for me are awesome stability, openness and apps, of which you don't have to use the market for (unless you get an ATT android).
Let me try to address the replies in one window.
First as for being tech savvy, yeah, I guess I am and I've been around long enough to be picky, HOWEVER, my BASIC needs are a phone I can HEAR and SEE. How come Nextel have speakers that you can hear clear across the next state and this thing I got, the HD2 I can barely hear with the fans in the car running despite them telling me it was really loud...?
Sure, I want a lot of stuff but if you read through all my info, you'll see that some of the things i don't really care about like social networking, streaming video, mp3 player and much more. LARGE FONT! How the hell hard is that to figure out? I mean, for those here who program and considering it's even in very simple programs. IS IT THAT hard to have an option of making the font bigger?
To Heybob. Bob, the problem is that I can't try and see these phones live so to speak. ALL the phones at tmobile are dummies or at least the ones I'm interested in.
Second, to be quite honest and when I think about it, I am not sure if she did mention this one was windows but I DID tell her I prefered android. In any case, NOT knowing what GSM is or if tmobile was GSM is not something I can let slide, ESPECIALLY considering she was the manager...
Now, so far, my tmobile coverage has seemed good. Yes, the phone as in the UI is still totally retarded so the windows OS has got to go. More than likely when I return this, if I still like tmobile then, I'll get a phone from Negri that's unlocked and if I'm not mistaken, he HAS Froyo phones in stock. Hold, gonna call and check..yep, he's got Nexus One with Froyo ready to ship.

Anyway, back to the phones. I do NOT like this windows UI so that one is out. I like that I have found a site with something like 80,000+ apps all in one place and although I'm not stingy, when you're TRYING apps and don't know if you'll like them or not, it helps if they're cheap or free. I got something on hte Pre I didn't like but hell ,I wasn't about to ask for a $1.50 refund.
Many of the windows apps were $15 or around there. I'm not paying it if I can't get a refund if I don't like the software and I AM picky with software too.

I've owned 4 different winmo phones and I can say that android leaves those respond FOOLS in the dust.
Android is more compatible with exchange server than windows mobile solution or blackberry.
Work gets done faster and I smile a lot more now.

ok so i have been a faithful android fan since the first droid, then i got incredible on verizon, loved them both but hated battery life of inc, hated slow updates but i fixed that with cyanogen mod. so i hate the skins the manufacturers add to the phone cause it slows them down and makes them slower to get updates, i love android stock expierience, but verizon doesnt really offer a decent phone with that. the problems i have with android are the lack of polish and overall not the greatest user expierience and inconsistant behavior in the os lol. i changed to a iphone because a lack of good android phones and i like the consistant aproach apple took even tho i dont like apple or the iphone all that much. so ive been eyeing wp7 for a while. i like the ui, but verizon is just now getting its first wp7 phone the htc trophy, not the best phone, but is wp7 worth it? give me some advantages and stuff i would like, to help me decide if i should get it. also i just bought a dx2 and talk about a buggy and inconsistant phone, i cant handle the constant freezing and unsmoothness feeling of the overall os on the phone, so im gonna return it, just trying to decide to get a wp7 or a dif android phone. thanks fellas

Well i would get the sgs2 but verizon doesnt have it lol. Verizon has no good android phones right now, i have the dx2 and it pretty much sucks haha

WP7 is IMO way way under developed. If you get one, you will probably miss your Android a ton. I suggest stick with Android for another year or so, maybe then you can try WP7 when it's worth trying.

Do they have a 30 day trial period like sprint? I had an android device and was going to get an EVO or Epic but decided to try the Arrive with WP7. I was thinking that I would probably give it back and stay with android, but I ended up keeping the Arrive and am very happy.
There are some features lacking with WP7 but its definitely a good system.

I like tweaking and fooling around with just about every piece of electronics I get my hands on, but sometimes I just want things to work... like my phone...
Anyways, if you like using your phone like a computer then keep android if you want it to work like a phone with computing abilities then get WP7
Nrk112. Yea there is a 15 day trial period so i have over a week left, yea im to the point where i just want the phone to work and be smooth. That is the main thing i enjoyed about iphone but i just hate apple so i got rid of it haha. Is it fast and smooth always??

wp7 is one of the smothest OSes I have ever used (as smooth and consistent as any iProduct you will get). And it is very fast! You will always get stock experience on windows phone 7 and updates are very fast if u don't get a samsung phone (or an AT&T) however, updates are pushed by microsoft rather than the carriers or the OEMs. If u get a windows phone 7, u will not regret it!
The lack of multitasking isnt a big problem? It looks crazy smooth in videos ive seen, wish mango was out already and verizon would get a little better choice than the trophy hahah

With the Mango update, WP7 will be incredibly more attractive. It's already the smoothest, cleanest system available. It has excellent games, and Zune is superior. Android is a very nice system...depending on the brand you buy, of course...but is pales in comparison the heavy-hitting media capabilities of WP7. Android has great media capabilities but it can't compare to Zune and XBOX. WP7 is also much more reliable than Android, now that NoDo has arrived.
With all of the outstanding features to arrive with Mango, there just won't be any choice any longer. WP7 will be the only real player. I was always more fond of Bing voice nav, which I used in WinMo 6.5, than Google nav, and when Mango brings Bing voice nav to WP7, there will no longer be anything the other systems have over WP7. It will also have the world's best multitasking....or app switching for some people. Android has multitasking and app switching, but there really is no way to single out the apps to kill them easily. You can install auto killers and Android has a quick app switcher built in, but the best you can make Android won't compare to WP7's set up.
Hang on till Mango gets here and then do some testing.
I doubt that Verizon will be getting any new WP7 devices soon seeing that lack of attention that Verizon gives to WP. So if you need a phone now, get the Trophy and you'll get the Mango update.
If you are not in a rush though, you may hold out to see if Verizon is releasing any new Windows Phone. Perhaps hell will freeze over!
Instead of taking someone's else word or opinion about WP7, why don't you hit a store or a friend and go try one out for a few minutes... it will make a ton of a difference.

I know its a phone and should mainly just be a phone, but there is nothing to do on it, I never leave my Android phone alone always playing with something but this I treat it like a nokia 3310 lol.

I don't know what it is but there are some things missing but Mango is looking good but still not as good as Android and Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming out around the same time.

Only thing that is making me want to swap over is the Xbox Live thing other than that Android is far superior.

I think I'm fine with paying for my phone to be unlocked personally, one time fee for the latest beta builds forever? Honestly I don't know why HTC Samsung and Motorola aren't looking into this for android devices so they can make some extra $ and make us impatient (or reasonable people that don't like waiting for their craptastic skins) people happy.
I don't care much for Xbox live like I use to but I definitely like Zune pass (really its probably the top single feature that has me wanting wp7 as I use my phone for music a lot).
I love android but honestly, I'm tired of trying to throw on custom ROMs (its fun but tiring) on every phone I get trying to keep up with the updates. I think the only thing that is holding me to android at this point is the ability to wifi tether my phone to my tablet and the fact that mango phones are on their way (fall is only 2-3 months away so announcements should be made soon?)
So guys, is there some feature that I am missing that you really either miss from android or you really like that wp7 had when you made the swap?

i switched from my old Desire Z and X8 (both of em are still in use sometimes) to a 7 Pro.
so in my own personal opinion, a small "comparision":
1. UI & Customization
I like the UI of WP7 alot more, you can use Launcher7 on Android but it doesn't feel as good. Its smoother and a lot faster, mostly due to inability of "customization" but i really don't miss it. The tile system works surprisingly well, and yeah i don't have a lot to complain about.
No wallpapers, no app launchers etc. It's a locked phone pretty much. If you don't mind, well just don't care
If you want customization stay with Android, else both of em are good in their own ways -> personal preference.
2. Apps
For most people an important point. If you compare Android market to WP7 market, WP7 looses.. big time!
You are charged for almost every app (and a good bunch of em are overpriced!). While free apps, and sometimes test versions of the paid apps are good enough, its still nothing in comparision to Android.
If you want specific apps, check prices first! (i'd recommend it before buying the phone )
There are some social features integrated into WP7 but at the moment (Pre-Mango for me still), they aren't complete. The replacements for those features are at best mediocore, sometimes they shut off randomly etc. There might be some better apps for those, but since i don't use em very much, i havent searched for them.
Otherwise the quality of the apps and games i downloaded is really good, though some of em are missing. As i said, check before you buy the phone, if you didnt already.
3. Features:
Well again the points goes to Android. Bluetooth File Transfer, Tethering and stuff like that, you won't find it on any current WP7 phone (unless you are a Mango user, but i don't know if they implement some of those features). If you need it, well i wouldn't recommend buying a WP7 as of now.
Other than that, i don't really miss any important ones.
4. Final Thoughts:
Since i don't have the WP7 for too long forgive me if i missed or overexaggerated on somethings.
In the end i think, WP7 is a real good OS. While locked down very hard, it just works (just like the hated Apple). While it does feel kind of inferioer to Android (due to the lack of some importants features mostly), it really isn't. There are workarounds for everything, though they are complicated sometimes
With Mango.. well no, even now in MY opinion (which means only for my needs etc), i equal WP7 to Android. While i still use my Androids sometimes (mainly for tethering etc), i often see myself not missing those phones.
I'd recommend WP7 everytime, as well as Android. Just get some information on both, maybe if your friends have said phones, compare them ( or go to the store and do the same).
In the end it comes down to one's need and preference
If you want, you could wait for Mango devices. Though i guess they won't up the hardware too much, maybe add some features like Front Facing Camera and stuff like that, but that's it.

This entire WP7 OS is simply beautiful and fluid. Rather than 95% of all other android devices, all WP7s are completely lag free while still having a very attractive and intuitive interface. I have 28k apps at my disposal and that means one for everything I would want. The WP7 community here is amazing and hacking / development itself isn't fragmented. I've owned 3 android devices and 2 iOS devices in the past and I'm honestly never looking back.
Android too me seems very slow and inconsistent. Running a Samsung Galaxy I often find when the thing lags, it lags to the extreme. The whole app-store mechanism I find a mess, especially because to much power is given to the app developers. More often then not, they abuse these powers which destroys your battery life.
I like the way WP7 is headed, and I like what Microsoft is doing to keep it a reliable platform. What I don't like however, is the update-procedure as it's very poorly performed. I'm not blaming any company in particular, but I do think updates needs to rolled out faster. Why do ISPs have to test every minor update?
Other then that, the WP7 UI is far superior, and app support is coming along well now. We just need a major bump and hopefully Nokia will spark this? I'm looking forward to purchasing a 2nd gen phone, namely a Nokia.
I went from iphone 3gs to blackberry torch to palm pre 2 to samsung focus to atrix 4g to iphone 4 and back to samsung focus and i love it.
The largest difference to me is that WP7 lacks customization. With android you will hardly ever find 2 phones that have the same ui and settings. All windows phones home screens look the same. I am ok w/ lack of apps. Honestly there is pretty much something for everything already. What would make me happy and never go back to android is being able to personalize the home screen. Maybe some transparent tiles and a wallpaper background for homescreen. that would be awesome.
I'll try to keep this succinct. I had an Evo 4G for the last year, then switched to an HTC Arrive a couple days ago.
Like:
-Most of the apps I used on Android are available on WP7
-As a Zune Pass subscriber, having that ecosystem on my phone is awesome
-It feels like for tasks I do often, I can do all of those tasks in a lot less time than it took on Android
-I primarily develop in .NET, so the dev tools are way friendlier to me than Android's.
Dislike:
-WP7 doesn't have anything that comes close to the awesomeness of Google Navigation
-I'm pretty heavily into the Google Voice ecosystem. Losing the tight integration there is annoying.
-As a Zune Pass subscriber, the lack of expandable storage is agonizing. I can never completely get rid of my Zune HD because it's still the device I have to go to if I want access to all of my music/podcasts.
-The Amazon Android App Market's free app of the day has spoiled me so badly on the pricing race-to-the-bottom front that I am finding it very hard to convince myself to buy any of the games on WP7.
Overall, I am having a good time so far. There is some functionality I am missing, but nothing that I'd consider a showstopper. I still have my Evo 4G, so I might end up switching between the two devices every couple months or so.
I just switched from a samsung mesmerize to a HTC TP7.
My first impression was WOW. I instantly liked the tp7. it's more responsive, it's faster, i can do stuff faster, and everything loads faster. Typing on the screen is more accurate and fixes my screw ups better.
As for apps, the android market has tons more, but in my experience 99.99999% of them are completely and totally useless and the ones that aren't useless i found to be lacking. There were a few that were good, but not many. So far the ones i've tried on WP7 actually seem to be of decent quality and i can find an app for everything i need so far. Some are still obviously in the early stages and need some more features but the app feels higher quality. Of course the windows marketplace has it's share of fart, burp and police light apps. (who downloads these stupid things?)
My ONLY complaint so far is the fact i can't do custom colors on the tiles. the stock colors frankly suck. I tried unlocking the phone and chevron doesn't find the phone at all so i'm wondering if this phone just isn't unlockable with that method. Not being able to do custom tile colors just seems like an obvious omission that should have been fixed allready.
Other than that i like this phone MUCH better, it's faster and doesn't hiccup as much as android did. The loss of customization sucks a bit but honestly, who really cares. I'd rather have the phone work well than be able to customize the wallpaper. The tile color though is killing me.
lots of very good points expressed already, and I agree with most.
However: wm6.5 was far superior to my android in all the little area's that I liked / wanted to tweak... which left me disappointed when I switched to android and frustrated with the infancy of the android based os / app wanting some of the simple things that I was used to on wm6.5.
Then I jump back to windows mobile (thinking it will be great to reg edit again) only to find... tile overlay with no access to the good stuff, and on top of that extremely limited in more ways than android... apps (android copycat) extremely limited and very high priced... I never needed apps to do what I wanted. windows already had it, I just needed to turn it on or off and or tweak it the way I wanted it. customize to no end.
Now I really like the smooth integrated feel, and I took a step down in hardware just to get the operating system. I am back to hacking a android wanna be like device just to get to the meat of the phone, so I can use the power of wm7. I think...

It's WP7 !
I think all we have to do is to wait a bit. My only problem is, that the application store is pretty empty(and overpriced), but hopefully it's gonna change.
What I see is, that Microsoft tries to copy Apple in terms of system optimisation, and simplicity, and so far I say it's successful.
I hope once the marketplace will be flooded with applications, there will be a serious filter on what apps they allow, and what they don't. The main criteria of selling on marketplace should be to have a perfectly smooth application on every windows based mobile, because what I see now is far away from that. Applications seem to just thrown together for wp7 in a day or 2.
Otherwise coming from android myself, I miss certain apps, or games, or functions, but the other hand I'm impressed by it's UI, and smoothness.
WP7 has potential, but it's time is not yet here. Once a great poet said in youtube comments: "Iphone is the past, Android is the present, WP7 is the future"
I came from evo 4g and I love it I got an arrive. Its so quick. And something no one mentioned battery life is great sure if I game for a while I will need a top off bit other then that a work day is no problem btw my work day is 12 hrs
There are some surprising holes in WP7 which I didn't expect compared to other OS.
1) No common Compass API - it's down to individual hardware manufacturers to supply drivers and they all implement it in a different way. So what works on an LG won't work on a Samsung or HTC. Really hinders the use of maps and star gazing apps etc. This is despite the compass being a mandatory part of MS' hardware spec. So much for MS' tight hardware platform control. And don't think about trying Mango - even if you have the compass working in NoDo it won't in the Mango Beta - and MS say it wont be availible until the OEMs release their final versions. The whole point of a Beta and RTM is so developers can test and adapt their software ready for launch - but with the compass augmented apps (one of the killer features of modern smartphones) they are screwed. We have a common API for GPS, why not Compass?
2) No PIN delay - even the most basic phone that offers Exchange support allows a configurable delay before the phone is PIN locked, or respects the delay imposed by an Exchange security policy. Everytime my screen goes off - I have to enter an 8 character password - despite the Exchange policy allowing a max 20 minute delay. Is this fixed in mango? Is this how MS works with MS?
