well my phone got wet on the back with a case, then i took off the case it and the back which was all wet, the battery was wet to and so was under it, i took out the battery and dried every thing and it worked, everything did, the speakers and buttons. so later today the phone just shut off and wouldnt turn on. so i thought it died and i tried charging and just the light would flicker on the top left of the phone. so i put it in rice for about 5 hours and i put battery back on and now when i press the the power button. the screen just turns on like u can see light, just a black screen. then it goes away.
the battery has some green stuff on one of the gold things that conencts your batteries.
So i oredered another battery off of ebay, do you think that would fix it?
Thank you so much for reading this, just post your opinion on what happend.
Sounds like the water fried something. Same thing happened when my 3yr old nephew wanted to ”wash” his DS. The first thing you should have done was remove the battery and store it in rice for 24 to 48hrs. Drying the phone from the outside doesn't remove the water that was sucked on the inside

yeah i would have done something right away but the phone worked right after.
have you tried to dry it with a dryer? sounds stupid but works!
Battery
Sounds like water fried something internally. I don't think a new battery will do you much good, but its worth a shot.
Yeah the water will have short circuited something. Best to pull the battery straight away and not put it back in again until you are sure that the phone is completely dried.
There's limited damage water can do, if there's no power.
In answer to your question, I don't think that a new battery will help but if you've ordered it then there's no harm in trying The green stuff will be were the battery connector has sort of rusted.

So it wasnt submerged just dropped when it was raining and being dumb i didnt know where i dropped it lol so i went out back found it it was still turned on and working but the battery was like 1pct left so it started powering off but it doesnt turn on anymore when i charge it the white screen pops up with a lightning bolt through a batter the red led stays on for about 10 seconds its a bb bold should i get a new battery?
Just to be safe, I'd recommend you remove the battery and anything else that you can remove and submerge it in rice, that should drive out the moisture.
Buying a new battery does sound like the logical thing to do.
I did the submerging i might ask a store to see if a new battery fixes it

Good suggestion; will remember it for next time it happens to me.
Submerge in rice, Don't say you dropped it and left it otherwise they will look at the litmus paper and see it has changed color because of water damage. Claim that the rain turned your phone off, when you got home, you turned it back on thinking the battery was dead, and it no longer works.
Okay thanks ill tell them that
Guys, been hanging out here long time now. First incident with about 6 month old captivate. I dropped a glass of water on my captivate yesterday. I immediately removed and took out the battery and wiped it dry. Did not see much of seeped in water so did not do the rice method. Turned on Wi-fi this morning and it says "unable to start wifi". Same with bluetooth.
Call, sms, camera everything works fine. At work, so blew dry the phone and also have kept it next to a warm laptop exhaust. Should I dismantle the phone and try to dry the swb23 chip (wifi/bt) ?
Please help guys !
stock and unrooted captivate

You can't see the water that got inside. Would have been better to do the rice method before switching it back on but you should do it now nonetheless. Just be warned, you may have cooked the WiFi chip already.
Are the moisture indicators clear? If so, you should send it for warranty replacement. If not, then you can resort to opening it up, wiping the traces, etc.

Yeah, pretty much ^^
uggg...may be too late. If you get a significant amount of liquid on or in your phone the worst thing you can do is turn it on.
You should have:
1. immediately removed battery and placed on a paper towel.
2. immediately place phone in a bag of rice for a minimum 24 hours if not 48 before ever powering back on.
Still its worth a try....remove battery and leave in rice for 24 hours....try again....maybe it didn't fry anything when you powered it on...but you definitely need to finish getting the moisture out of the inside via the rice absorption.
I had my old tilt in a pocket submerged in a swimming pool for a good 15 minutes before realizing my blunder. When i realizing it i didn't try to turn it back on. Left it in rice for 48 hours and everything work fine (luckily the phone was powered of when i got in the pool so that probably helped avoid anything frying).
Haha, I once accidently dropped my old Samsung Epix in a bucket of water and it still booted up and worked but most of the features are dead but screen and all still works. It looked like it was wrecked. I got it replaced under my insurance which is a good thing.

funny
but being aware that you shouldn't turn on an electronic device when it is wet hardly requires hindsight though does it? =)
Thanks guys, I have put my phone in a bowl of rice hoping it will get cured.
If not, will ATT not service my phone under warranty ? I read somewhere that replacing the wifi/bt chip costs $70 with ATT. Has anyone done this here ?
Thanks all for your quick replies ! Much appreciated. I will keep everyone updated on how this issue pans out so it will help someone in the future
Tesist the urge to take out Nd test.....leave at least 24 hours without touching

How do I check for the moisture indicator ? Any easy steps ?
It is the white (or not so white anymore) square in the battery compartment.

i am just always surprised to see the posts where someone gets there phone wet (washed in laundry, dropped in toilet, spilled significant amount of liquid on it) and the first thing they did was tried to turn it back on almost immediately.
btw if your looking at the moisture indicators for warranty purposes its quite possible you have to completely open the shell. Usually they have one visible without taking the phone apart but its not uncommon to have a secondary marker inside the phone where it would be harder for someone to tamper with. Can anyone confirm where all the cappys markers are?
Been a while since I had mine apart but I don't recall seeing one inside.

I rooted my phone A LONG time ago, and have never had trouble before, I dropped my phone in some water by mistake and tried to turn it on. I realize turning it on was dumb. I put it in uncooked rice for about two days and tried to turn it on, it didn't come on. But an hour or so later I felt the phone and it felt warm, so I tried to turn it on and the bootscreen came up, but it is just stuck at boot screen, it isn't even a boot loop it is just at the SAMSUNG screen, is this due to the water damage or a ROM?
If you can get to download mode I would try to go back to stock. That might work.

That's actually what I was thinking, but I am going to try everything else until I resort to that.
If your contacts and such are backed up to Google then Odin back to stock or hemidall will be the only way

And if that doesn't work then the water might have damaged some internal hardware

I actually think it is the water damage now because I tried to plug it in to see if it was the battery and now it won't turn back on.

...unfortunately it's almost guaranteed to be water damage.
Did you try to open the phone and see if there is some rust on the MB? I remember my old phone(Nokia N82) got dropped in a pool and when i dried it up it did boot up but my keyboard was not working. i opened the phone up and saw some rust on the connector. After cleaning it up it worked.

if the phone was on or sleep, and it was water logged, the battery would short for sure.
it depends on how long it was water logged.
the old battery is presumed dead or bad..the phone may still function if dried.
if you've nothing else,
take out the battery
dry out the phone...if you can disassemble as much as you can...use hair drier or low setting or some warm surface..let it dry out for a few days..(rice is dry and is moisture absorbing) any similar material is fine..ex: silica - water heater surface; heat exhaust..when you dont see any further moisture in the glass screen is a good indicator.
clean the connectors...
use a new battery.
it just may work
Had a Captivate...same thing...except dropped in toilet.....that may be why it smells funny when i use it...
But anyways....after it was in rice for a couple of days....I let sit for over a week before I did anything else to it....now it works just as it did before except the battery life is gone.....
I'd let it thoroughly dry out for weeks if possible....just like everyone else said...Wife drop her iPhone4 in our pool.....got it working again....but the battery was shot....

excuse me for the very long title. I being the brilliant human being that i am went into a pool on the day of our independence with my beautiful HOX in my pocket. i sat there for about 5 min, totally sober mind you, then realized what an ass i was. i immediately went inside, shut it off and placed in rice. the next day i turn it on to see if it works and indeed it does. The only visible problem was water under the screen though the screen worked fine. i turned it back off and put it back in rice so as to give the rice ample time to perform its magic. 3 days later i check again and it still works. i decided to switch back to the HOX and things were great. 2 days later however it would randomly shut off and take AT LEAST 30 min before it would turn back on. at the end of the day i took out the sim and threw it back in rice. the next day it wouldnt turn on and thats the way its been ever since. no light when charging ether. ive left it in rice for the past 3 weeks checking every once in awhile but to no avail.
so i know that water damage is the culprit as is my stupidity however im asking to see if there is anything that anyone can think of that might revive my phone? perhaps a batter replacement? or screen replacement? or find out what i shorted? ive taken it apart a little but have held back out of fear of being unable to put back together my already broken phone lol
any help is appreciated. Thank You

Sorry about you phone. Being an electronic technician, I would say you unfortunately made a fatal mistake by turning the phone on before it was totally dry inside. Almost anything on the circuit boards inside could have shorted or partially shorted while wet. I don't think anyone could guess as to what component is bad now without swapping in known good parts. It might have been damaged considerably before you got the chance to turn it off after the soaking, and there's nothing you could have done after that point, although it seemed to OK for a short time. I'm sorry that I can't recommend any further remedies.

Take it apart and sell for parts. The digitalizer probably works fine.

You really have to take it apart before putting it in the rice. These things are sealed up pretty good these days.
Might just be the battery. If water got in the pack, it would behave as you described from internal shorting.

Open it
At this point, you have nothing to lose by opening it up and drying it out for a week or 2. At least you'll get out any remaining moisture. You may just get lucky.
Also if there is corrosion, use 99% alcohol to remove it.

Hey guys. So I know a few things about this phone and have been taking pretty good care of it...only two drops from about three feet away from the ground. However, I dropped it in the toilet today. Now, I put it in rice for two hours and then got it out. I tried to turn the thing on, and it succeeded. The bad thing is, when I turned it on, before my boot animation ended, the screen flickered and turned off, and that's when I pulled the battery out of my phone and continued to leave it in rice as I type this right now. Is my phone busted permanently, or is there some hope?
You should have left it to dry like 24 hrs or more. You might have fried it. Let it sit at least over night and keep your fingers crossed.

I got a friend who dropped his phone in the water once. He did the rice trick but waited for more than 24 hours before attempting the first boot.
Now his phone works great except for battery issues. He has the Galaxy Nexus, so he can't change the battery easily. He'll just wait and buy a new phone someday. He just has to keep a charger near!
What about your phone? Anything new?
Well I tried this morning, the screen first started to go sort of whitish during the boot animation. Then, the screen returned to normal but remained unresponsive to my touch...I'm leaving it to dry more because I guessed that water was still near the screen, causing it to be unresponsive.
I've done this exact thing and the phone from it, mostly. I had constant signal issues afterwards and got rid of it.
The rice does seem to work, but.. you're supposed to take the battery out immediately and put it all in the rice to dry. 2 hours isn't going to cut it.
Ok guys...so my phone turns on and does function properly...problem is,,,the touchscreen doesnt work...should I put it back into the rice?
