Any negative effect from Sun for phone when in car dock - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I noticed the phone gets hot when it's in the windshield mount car dock, are there any negative effects from prolonged use in the sun heat? I know nav units are tested for that kind of use in the sun but I'm not too sure about our phones. I'd appreciate any feedback, don't wanna screw up my phone
Sent from my HTC One X

I know iPhones shut off when they get too hot, not sure about Android. It can damage the battery, I think, as well. Not sure what sort of advice to give, though.

Thanks for the input. Anybody else with experience using a windshield mounted dock? Maybe I should make some sort of plastic thing that clips to the dock and provides shade to the phone, something similar to this: http://www.glarestomper.com/324.html but not exactly because this one does not keep the sun from hitting the back of the unit, it's just so you can see the screen.

I would definitely worry about it. Hell, I bet most phones will overheat just fine in the shade, if you run them plugged into the charger for hours with GPS on and the screen at full brightness. Adding direct sunlight to the equation is just begging for trouble IMO.

Get a vent clip mount and then you'll have air circulating around the phone at all times! Nevermind that those kinds of mounts can be pretty shoddy and break your vents.

I went with the right hand mount. They're free and fully adjustable anywhere within arms reach

I went this route, still clear shot for gps and out of the sun... mostly, and I can aim vents towards the back of the phone if ever necessary.

I already bought an extended suction mount which is like 11" long and i will attach it to the bottom of the cup holder, it's for the garmin mounts which i think the little ball joint is hopefully the same size as my ibolt dock ball joint.

Actually, they are well made, solid and pretty nice material. As far as CD player, all appears fine, but on the same token, this is actually the non used factory unit. My blue tooth deck is installed below. A suction cup system on the other hand, bad placement, for me at least

Cup holder mount (depending on where exactly those are located on your car) seems less than ideal if you are using the phone for Navigation.
I use the Mountek CD slot mount same as the photo posted above (except mine is stock, [email protected] modded his to combine it with the EVO 4G LTE dock). On my car, the position is similar to the above pic, up high on the dashboard, for good viewing if using for Navigation.
If your AC is on, and the vents are anywhere close to the phone (even if not pointed directly at the phone) I wouldn't worry much about overheating the phone, even if in direct sunlight. Pretty sure the phone will shutoff if it starts to overheat. Given, its a heck of a lot sunnier and warmer in Florida than Boston, but I haven't had any issues with direct sunlight up here. Leaving something on the dash with the windows closed, and the car off is one thing. But if you're driving the car, and the AC is on, or even the windows open, I wouldn't worry that much about the temperature.

+1 to this. The Mountek mount is very well made, and works great. Most every cupholder, air vent, suction cup mount is crap in comparison. You can see from the numerous positive reviews on Amazon, many of which compared it to other mounts, and found the Mountek superior. If you don't use your CD player, its a great solution. It doesn't harm the CD player at all, aside from possibly deforming the fabric or brush "dust guard" in the slot.
http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-Universal-Smartphone-Blackberry-Motorola/dp/B004G1L52Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1339601834&sr=8-2

I won't be using it for navigation because my hu already does have navigation. My biggest objective is to keep my device charged up and have the car mode auto switch on the Bluetooth, as well as keep my hands free and away from my device. Anyways, i will post pics of the end result once i receive my stuff in the mail.

He does sell a landscape version as well.
The reason why I preferred to get this is because:
1. They are pretty customized for the Thunderbolt and the creator confirmed that it could be used for the Sensation because of the adjustable dock adapter he created.
2. I can use this with any case I finally decide on and can be adjusted accordingly with the removal and reapplication of 3m double sided tape and an adjustment of the hex screw.
3. They are cheaper than OEM and not from overseas
In use! Low bandwidth no need to view lol...
If you want more screenshots let me know lol...
This custom dock originally sold for the HTC Thunderbolt. Upon a few emails to the fabricator (or Craig himself), he told me that this dock would work because of the customization of the side plug. I opted for the portrait version because of my limited real estate on my work desk. This dock does not trigger any dock apps, it is solely there to charge and hold and can be adjusted to whichever case your hearts content. For me that was the biggest selling point.
Update: Been using this great dock everytime I am at work and I have connected it to my front usb on my desktop. Works great. Removing and inserting the phone is smooth as you can imagine because upon install with or without a case depends on how you adjust the plug on the dock. If you ever need to adjust it, you just need to get more double sided tape which the seller happily provides. You just have to remove the old one of course and clean the tape adhesive before applying the new one.
But as of using this dock it is great for the price and not regretting it at all. If anyone is looking for an adjustable portrait or landscape dock like these, these are worth it.
mini bump
Craigsdocks.com have since made verticle, horizontal and now car cradle that can be used with the Sensation. It's a pretty cool concept. My only gripe is the double sided tape that is used to mount the car cradle, but that's personal preference.
I'm glad you bumped this up. I was going to start on my trek to find a HTC branded dock. I really like the portrait position of this unit. Plus, machined in the good ol' US of A is always a plus too!
I'm guessing it's a good idea to double sided tape the dock to your desk surface as well? Can you dock/undock with one hand?

The car dock was the thing I was referring to as the mounting point. Where some others use a suction cup thingy.
But as for the portrait dock which I have. The double sided tape is really for the positioning of the usb plug when you first install it; with or without a case. And yes I can release take it off and place it back with one hand. Only thing is that your case would need to have a mostly flat back in that case. Then you can easily remove and dock it with one hand. I only use two hands because the usb plug does grip pretty well most times lol.....
I really can't stress it enough is that you indeed get what you pay for with respects to criagsdocks.com. The dock is nice and heavy so that you can undock one handed.

Not with sense. You would have you use an alternative launcher. Adw, launcher pro, etc.
You can also stand the phone up in portrait without charging on the landscape model.

iBolt car dock/cradle for HTC One X (AT&T or Int'l) WORKS WITH CASES

I just received my iBolt HTC One X dock from www.tessco.com in the mail and I must say i'm more than pleased. I have a Seidio Surface case and it fits like it was made for it. They also included a spacer that lets me use it naked as well, i tend to flip flop between cased and naked depending on mood. I did not use the windshield mount, as I have an arm with the ball mount attached in the cubby hole on my '04 Volvo S60R. I used the OG Motorola Droid arm with the ball for my old Atrix 2 car dock, and it fit the iBolt dock just perfect. The mount is stable, and charges just fine. It even activates the car mode, i wont end up using that since it doesn't have the ability to add pandora or play music to the menu....maybe a dev can help us out with that. Here are a few links and pics.....try to spot which were taken with Atrix 2 and which were my One X .
iBolt doens't have the One X dock on their site yet, but it's very similar to the rest of their solutions.

Tessco link for it. Expansys has it but as of tuesday it said it wouldn't ship til the 18th, and it's changed dates 5 times since it popped on their site a month ago. I just checked the link and it says ships within 5 days. I ordered from Tessco tuesday and it arrived via UPS at lunch 2 days after ordering. Comes from Baltimore, MD. The catch is you need to order a minimum of $50 or it charges a $14 surcharge. I ordered this MHL cable since i was going to buy one anyway .

I took the cubby out and used a couple of nuts and bolts. through the side. It aint pretty once you look in there, but you never see it unless you look for it. If i took the bolts out there would be two small holes in the side of the cubby that would never be noticed....unless you read this thread...lol. I have since shaved the bolts to the right length and painted them black.
very nice.
Looks good in your Volvo S60R or V70R. I picked up my HTC One X from Rogers yesterday and was looking for a car dock for my Volvo V70 T5M. Think it would work with a Ballistics case?

It's the USB plug. If I recall correctly, they are pinned out a certain way so the phone recognizes it as a car or desktop dock. Same thing happened with my old Captivate's desktop dock, even if it wasn't powered, plugging my Cappy into it caused the desk clock to activate, setting it down on the dock but not actually making the connection did nothing.
That looks great and I might just use your cubby mod idea myself. Thanks for posting this.

Expensive car mount alternative

So I want to put my phone flush to the dashboard. When I was using the Samsung Focus, I had a case that I used only for when I was in the car because I put Velcro on the back of it and on my dashboard. It stuck really well and I could still see everything on my dash. I don't really want to have something sticking to the windshield and my dashboard isn't really built for having anything sticking on top of it. Instead of a case this time, I was thinking I might be able to take the part that clips on to phones (with enough room for a slim case on the HOX) and just put the Velcro on that. It was a bit annoying having to swap out cases every time. I was thinking maybe something like the Car Mount Mobile Dock for Samsung Galaxy Note would be a good choice. Since I can't post any links yet search for Car Mount Mobile Dock for Samsung Galaxy Note on smartphonepedia's website. Basically, it's a spring loaded dock so it's adjustable. Also, it has these four holders that would only hold the sides so if I place it right there should be nothing blocked. I don't really feel like spending so much for it though.
Has anyone tried this before? As long as the mount comes with at least two parts, one that attaches to the phone then attaches to a mount, I would be fine with it. Though I would want something that isn't TOO flimsy either. Or has anyone seen a mount that's kind of minimalist when it comes to holding the phone? Too many universal mounts use grips that are too large.
Edit: Alright, so I looked around some more and found a few that seem like they would work. They are on Amazon: the LAZA Zip Grip universal car mount, iShot mount: mini universal holder, CYGNETT universal car mount, and the Clingo mount. The Clingo mount is the most expensive, but has anyone tried it?
Check out this arkon mount, it works with the one x. I've recommended it here before and people seem to like it; it's only $18.

Thats what I use, no uglier or better looking than a hunk of plastic suction cupped to your dash and its probably free if you have a binder clip around somewhere
Arkon mounts are great, they come in almost any configuration you'll need for your vehicle. I have a truck, so I wen't with a floor mount. Placed the bracket one of the seat rail bolts, and It works awesome! It's right next to my shifter, and down lower so I don't have to reach up to mess with it.
http://www.arkon.com/megagrip/megagrip-floor-mount.html
I'll snap a picture of it if you want it.
EDIT: works with any type of case, and phone. width is fully adjustable. Just pop the phone on the stand, squeeze the clicking side holders in until its tight on your phone, and you're good to go. When you want it off, there is a button on the side you press, and it releases the side holders.
+1 for the Arkon slim grip. The thing is amazing and well hold almost any phone.

Cheap car dock off eBay

So I ordered this car dock from eBay, it cost 3 something bucks and is really solid for that price. Haven't had time to test it out in the car, but it seems really sturdy and tight, it's not moving around and the overall quality is epic at that price point.

The plate has holes for LED flash and the camera, so it doesn't hide anything and the camera works fine. Speaker hole has been cut as well, using turn-by-turn navigation is not an issue.
Pros:
Cheap
Durable
Fits well
Doesn't cripple any features
Cons:
The ball head is not 360 degrees and comes blocked at some point, should have more moving range.
Doesn't fit with a case (whoever does that pornography and hides the design, do not buy this)
This looks pretty good.
Could you please post a link to it on ebay (assuming it wasn't a once-off auction by someone)?
I'm not sure if that would be considered spam or against the forum rules or anything, please PM a link to me if that is the case.

I only worry about that in time, the color will go off, where the top clip goes over the phone..
i found a dock similar to the one the OP posted. here it is at amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Cbus-Wireless-Adjustable-Cradle-T-Mobile/dp/tech-data/B008MH7QQ4/ref=de_a_smtd
its only 7.96 out the door. once i get it. i will take some pictures and post it.
Nice dock. I wish I had blue tooth in my car... So I can really use one S in the car

Why the bluetooth? Using an AUX cable works the same way basically. Been there, done that.
Pay attention to the phone holder. The one pictured above has the camera hole on the right side as you're facing it - which means the charging port comes on the top side of the phone (assuming you're using it in landscape mode for navigation. Most I've seen (including the one I've ordered) are the same, only one on ebay seemed to be the right way (camera hole on left side as you're looking at it, so charging port on the bottom side).
You can of course turn the holder the other way around (as I did), but then you lose the benefit of the two supporting corners.
Huh? The charger is still at the bottom and the camera and the flash work the way they should. I don't see the problem with this?
Is the dock in the OP work with phone that have a case?

Doesn't fit with a case (whoever does that pornography and hides the design, do not buy this)

pornography is good and I have a case but I am still going to buy this except I am going to have to pay a dollar more.
sumasage, case does not fit in any way into this. Was also mentioned in the first post.
Question: Does the OP dock elicit car dock mode or is it just a charging micro USB (the pin configuration would be different)? I'm getting a One S as a warranty replacement to my Amaze and I really like my Amaze OEM dock - it is a true car dock.

To answer my own question. I see it it's a just a mount with no charger, so the answer is no unless you already have a standalone car mode charger, which I don't think exists.

looking for one to use with the phone, this one looks good and cheap, too bad won't work with teh case.
A quick question, when we enable the car mode, is there anywhere where the navigation direction can be routed to the car's bluetooth?

I did that before. I just made sure my one s was synced with my Sony head unit in my car then I switched my head unit to Bluetooth audio. Then all my directions went threw the speakers when the lady would talk. Idk if that's what u want.

FYI, if you want car mode you can spend 15 bucks for HTC's car mode cable (available at HTCPedia) or you can get HTC's own car dock for the One S (about 55 bucks), which is a high quality product that fits the phone perfectly and no need to connect the cable each time. I just got it and am very happy with it.

car mount

anyone recommend a good strong mount. been thinking maybe a car mount that will go in the CD player anyone using one
I've been using Mountek nGroove Snap 3 Magnetic CD Slot Car Mount for Smartphones and Phablets.
I had the cd slot mount... kept falling out since my cd player was set in deep. I ended up with this guy that I like a lot:
http://smile.amazon.com/MagnMount-M...1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
I use a dash mounted grip - works in horizontal not vertical and fits any phone up to 6 inches https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spigen-Ste...1786&sr=8-1&keywords=spigen+car+mount+stealth
I'm using an AnyGrip 100 MD.
* It is a dashmount and my dash isn´t real flat but bended (A Volkswagen Golf VI).
* Non adhesive (but you can use the provided 3M pad) and it's very very sticky!
* Even with my DBrand skin it sticks real good.
* It doesn´t leave any mark.

Sure. Here it is. Sitting nicely in the seam by the radio. And here's the phone on it. The metal plate is in the case. That way there is no damage to the car, no damage to the phone. Love it!

As others have noted, CD slot mounts are some of the worst in the "strong" department. If you look strong look into the Ram X Mount. But be prepared for the industrial anesthetic. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and love it, holds the phone firmly even when driving over rocky off road terrain. But I don't know if I would buy it for a passenger sedan.
Kenu Airframe+ as long as your car has the vents like shown in the pic is amazing!

I'm currently using an iOttie easy one touch 3 suction mounted to my windshield with my 6P. Even though it seems secure there is quite a bit of flex while driving. I drive a Ford Ranger so you feel every bump in the road, even on surface streets. I'm considering upgrading to a RAM X Mount myself(most likely rearview mirror attached mounted on an arm) not sure if it's worth the extra expense however.
Do you use a suction cup with your X Mount?

No, I pulled out one of the screws for the sun visor and replaced it with this
http://www.amazon.com/Ram-Mount-Motorcycle-Handlebar-Screws/dp/B005J43I56
Then I attached the X-grip
http://www.amazon.com/Ram-Mount-Universal-X-Grip-Phablet/dp/B00C7B2NV4
to the ball with this
http://www.amazon.com/Ram-Mount-Double-Socket-Swivel/dp/B009SX0J88
On the Jeep the screw for the sun visor is M8 so this is a fairly clean setup. The X-grip is on the left side of the steering wheel
Is it worth the expense? It depends. There is still a decent amount of play and vibration, especially off-road, but there is zero change of the phone coming loose which is good enough for me. I don't need to read anything on the screen, I just need to be able to see a pre-defined route on a topo map. If I were to do it again I would probably not use a double-socket swivel arm, because the extra joints introduce a lot of play. You get to position the phone perfectly but it does vibrate when there is decent shake in the vehicle.

Personally using a Logitech +Drive car mount. Its operates through magnets and they come with a metal plate which is adhesive but i don't peel off the adhesive protector and chuck it in between my case and phone. I mount the dock on my dash with the included base plate that has a 3M adhesive on the bottom. it would work both on your windshield and your dash because it uses suction cups which have not deteriorated after a year of usage. pretty much the best magnetic mount in australia you can find.
