Expensive car mount alternative - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So I want to put my phone flush to the dashboard. When I was using the Samsung Focus, I had a case that I used only for when I was in the car because I put Velcro on the back of it and on my dashboard. It stuck really well and I could still see everything on my dash. I don't really want to have something sticking to the windshield and my dashboard isn't really built for having anything sticking on top of it. Instead of a case this time, I was thinking I might be able to take the part that clips on to phones (with enough room for a slim case on the HOX) and just put the Velcro on that. It was a bit annoying having to swap out cases every time. I was thinking maybe something like the Car Mount Mobile Dock for Samsung Galaxy Note would be a good choice. Since I can't post any links yet search for Car Mount Mobile Dock for Samsung Galaxy Note on smartphonepedia's website. Basically, it's a spring loaded dock so it's adjustable. Also, it has these four holders that would only hold the sides so if I place it right there should be nothing blocked. I don't really feel like spending so much for it though.
Has anyone tried this before? As long as the mount comes with at least two parts, one that attaches to the phone then attaches to a mount, I would be fine with it. Though I would want something that isn't TOO flimsy either. Or has anyone seen a mount that's kind of minimalist when it comes to holding the phone? Too many universal mounts use grips that are too large.
Edit: Alright, so I looked around some more and found a few that seem like they would work. They are on Amazon: the LAZA Zip Grip universal car mount, iShot mount: mini universal holder, CYGNETT universal car mount, and the Clingo mount. The Clingo mount is the most expensive, but has anyone tried it?

Check out this arkon mount, it works with the one x. I've recommended it here before and people seem to like it; it's only $18.

Would that work with a case on, say an otterbox?

This particular mount I'm not sure, as I don't have an Otterbox case. I'm guessing it'll work with the thinner otterbox, but I couldn't say.
They have a version of this mount for the the Galaxy Note, that think will work with almost any case:

Has any of you guys tried this?

http://lifehacker.com/5747897/how-to-build-a-car-mount-for-your-cellphone-from-office-supplies
Thats what I use, no uglier or better looking than a hunk of plastic suction cupped to your dash and its probably free if you have a binder clip around somewhere

Arkon mounts are great, they come in almost any configuration you'll need for your vehicle. I have a truck, so I wen't with a floor mount. Placed the bracket one of the seat rail bolts, and It works awesome! It's right next to my shifter, and down lower so I don't have to reach up to mess with it.
http://www.arkon.com/megagrip/megagrip-floor-mount.html
I'll snap a picture of it if you want it.
EDIT: works with any type of case, and phone. width is fully adjustable. Just pop the phone on the stand, squeeze the clicking side holders in until its tight on your phone, and you're good to go. When you want it off, there is a button on the side you press, and it releases the side holders.

+1 for the Arkon slim grip. The thing is amazing and well hold almost any phone.

ProClip / Brodit
These are phone specific and great quality. Unfortunately, these are not case compatible... only skins on the phone.
I got the hardwired unit and did the installation myself.

Looks like they do make a case compatible mount also:
http://www.proclipusa.com/brodit-de...ble-holder-with-tilt-swivel-875214-19014.aspx
Also note you'll need to check for the part to mount to your vehicle. Since its a two piece modular solution, just upgrade the phone holder piece as you upgrade devices.

I've purchased PROCLIPS USA Mount for my Acura TL 2006, works great!!! :good: However, it isn't really cheap. I've tried many cheap mounts in the past and they are definitely not worth the time, terrible build quality.

I just went and bought a HTC evo 4G lte car mount works great... Got it for $29.99

How do you mount your phone in your car? Post Please

Hi, I need a new firm car mount for my phone. And I found 2 kinds of mounts, do you have the similar item. If you do, would you please tell me which one is the best choice or post your mounts here? Thanks.

(Updated: Bought the second one, and it works fine.)
This is what I use in my car. its a Spiderpodium, and they are incredibly useful. I had one for my Galaxy S3, Then I got another for my work phone (a tiny nokia lumia 610) and now t holds my nexus 4. Its stable, quick to slot the phone in and out and it is truly universal.
http://a.tgcdn.net/images/products/additional/large/eb42_spider_podium_car.jpg
And they are cheap! especially if you get the unbranded ones.
I use this Mountek bracket that inserts into the cd slot. Doesn't block view of windshield and is easily transportable to other cars.

Great, seems quite firm. Is a adjustable one? I mean the size.
I use this: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-INFUS...S-V1B7BEGSTA/dp/B004WOBMIY/?tag=s601000020-20
Fits perfectly. There's a thread here too on how to mod it to charge faster (otherwise the battery drains a little during use.)

I use one similar to the last one you posted, 10$ from ebay, adjustable in almost every way. Put the mandatory NFC tag on it (also from ebay) to automagically start your car/navigation/whatever app when you dock it.
I use an iottie flex 2. It's illegal to have phones on windows so I attached it on the CD storage door on my car.
Brodit Proclip. I use a passive adjustable mount designed for the iPhone 3GS with case (sacrilege I know). Let's me use my N4 naked or with any case from bumper up with only minor adjustment required.

I second this. It is small and easy to use plus most importantly it sticks to everything without leaving any residue behind. I have a textured dash and this sticks just fine to it. Previously I had a Motorola mount with a smooth disk stuck to my dash so I could use the suction cup mount. What a PITA to remove the adhesive from the dash.

Thanks for you information.
I use a Samsung Infuse car mount, it fits perfectly. I originally bought it for my Galaxy S3 4G but after I gave that to the wife I tried my N4 in it and it was a perfect fit, better than the S3 fitted in there.

I use low profile dual lock, its like Velcro but stronger and more durable, I have one piece stuck on the tpu case my phone lives in and the other on my Brodit proclip. A roll of dual lock costs about £5.
It is less obvious that it's a phone mount, as it leaves no suction marks on the screen etc.
I got this one
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10833&cs_id=1083304&p_id=10257&seq=1&format=2
used sugru to mount it closer to me (I drive a truck and can't reach the windshield easily).
more expensive than most of the ones suggested, but this seems useful, since its magnetic...easy to attach/detach. the mount itself goes in the cd slot, so it's not in the way.

To be completely honest, since its still early on in this phone's life... The "best" ones would be the universal pouches that strap on to your bars or stem, much like this guy right here http://www.amazon.com/ChargerCity-Motorcycle-Smartphone-Restistant-Protective/dp/B00DVTL4PW/ref=sr_1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1397302416&sr=1-3&keywords=galaxy+s5+bike+mount... Give it some time and better stuff will come out.
I am waiting for some myself since I used my GS3 with Endomodo and Strava constantly.

Keep an eye out on RokForm (www.rokform.com). I used their cases on my S3 and S4 and have the bike mounts installed on all 3 of my bikes. Looking forward to getting their case for my S5!
Edit: Just preordered!

Don't listen to the silly universal ones..
You want the best mount?? I'll tell you what the best mount is!!
It's a case.. That's right.. After riding 150 miles a week for many years and having all sorts of cycle computers, I wanted something CLEAN!! I bought a two piece case, like an otterbox (I forget the brand) and simply mounted the plastic to a typical ring clamp on my bike. I drilled/glues into the clamp so it was secured as could be!
When it was time for ride time, I would simply slide the rubber case (the second piece) around my phone than secured that into the mounted plastic case (The first piece)
It was 100000x better looking, it was actually USEFUL as you could use it while riding, it was also extremely secure! and could never come out without the proper bending and normal way you would take a phone out.

This was mounted so I could adjust on the fly, I used one of the garmin computer clamps I had laying around that would twist sideways and up and down. so when I got going I can adjust the phone so its angled with the wind and won't be a mud flap
just got one of these.. its absolutely amazing. works perfect with a case as well. http://www.niteize.com/page/Handleband-Nite-Ize.asp

I Have one on my S5 great holder i also go the car mount at the same time , again second to non ...
One draw back its a little thick for the wireless charging to work.
I have a Samsung S5, and ride the bike to and from work daily. I just installed a Rokform stem mounted kit and case on my road bike stem, and rode to work with my beloved S5 firmly attached to the stem mount this morning. All is well, so far, as I experienced Strava talking to me throughout the ride about how I was doing! Times on segments were announced real time, as the prior 6,000 miles Strava was buried in my seat pack with my phone set to SILENT.
This stem mounted kit seems very solid, in every way. It is secured by the case for the phone, two magnets, and a lanyard wrapped around the stem, just in case. I'll check back in a few weeks once I have some miles on the case and mount.

Exogear ExoMount - Best Car Mount I have ever used

I dont see may people talk about this car mount so I though I would post this here. I have been using this mount for over a year now and it has been great. I started using it with my S4 then Note 3, One plus one, and now the Note 4. Is also one of the only ones that lets me still using a case on my phone. Looks promising. I'm gonna look at this Ram car mount as well. Haven't had a car mount in ages and I want one this go round.
Edit: Both look bad ass! Anyone have experience with both mounts for a comparison?
I never heard of the Ram Mount till today. I will have to check them out. One thing I like about the Exogear one is that once you sick it to something, it never comes off. I never ever had it come off during the time I had it on the windows. I now have it on my dash in my new car and its the perfect area for it.
I have the Ibolt prodock and it fits the phone and holds it really good even if it has an otterbox defender protecting the phone. One thing to note tho (see what I did there), is that you cant get audio straight from USB any more, you would have to use and OTG cable and an external DAC.
I used this dock since the note 2 days and its been great!

Sticking to anything is what is interesting me the most. The Ram doesn't seem to have that gel like suction cup. I want to be able to mount this baby on my dash, yet have the versatility to take it out and use it in other vehicles. Ithink I'm gonna give exogear a try even though to Ram has a lot of options and looks very cool as well. You could actually use either as a dash cam if you want. It looks like neither blocks the rear camera view. IDK.
I agree about Exogear. I've been using the ExoMount Touch CD Slot Car Mount for about a week now, and the thing is great!
Really sturdy, no sharking while driving, grip is tight, and the twists are really good too. Would definitely recommend to everyone who needs something to hold the phone in the car.
Granted I'm ProClip biased, but I hate windshield, vent, and CD tray mounts. To me they look like junk and not integrated into the car's dash. I ended up taking out my Sirius because having it and my phone on the center console was looking a little busy. But that's just me. And if you live in cali, you can't have things mounted to your windshield I believe. Don't know if any other states have that rule.
And sometimes ProClip doesn't have the perfect mount option for the car, but that can be worked around. Their adjustable cases are the best out there, especially since most of us are throwing cases on our phone. I see all these threads every time someone gets a new phone. I've had the same adjustable cradle so check the original Galaxy days with my Epic. And my Note with a slim case just fits. Haven't bought a new mount in years.

Yes, I use this Spigen case: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MAWRQR6/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item
If you're worried about it fitting into the mount, don't be. There is still room for another layer of a case on top of existing case.. maybe even 2 more cases on top
Decisions! I was set to go with exogear but that Ram tho! Aluminum grade construction and you can mount your ball sack if you buy the right kit. I'd have to get a separate adhesive for the mount, but this thing looks rock solid.
That one looks nice... but I LOVE this mount!!!
Sticks to anything and is hard to even pull off. The mounting system is easy too... push it an it locks in place. I have had 2 for about 1 year and not issues. I used to always buy the phone specific mounts, but that got expensive.
http://www.amazon.com/iOttie-Windsh...414678126&sr=1-1&keywords=iottie+car+mount+xl
Because I lease my car I don't want any mount that uses an adhesive. If it's strong enough to hold the mount & phone it will probably be very difficult if not impossible to remove without causing a mark which would be considered damage on a lease turn in.
I have not had that problem. I used to move my mount from 2 cars and it did not leave any marks on the dash. The one I use does not use adhesive. Thats why the exogear and the Iottie works to well.
This is what I use and I love it! Note, it will not work with all cars, but it works with mine perfectly fine.
The reason I say it will not work with all cars is because I have a friend who has a '14 civic sedan, doesnt work because phone would end up being too high, another friend has a '14 prius which cd slot is behind the nav screen which slides down, I have an audi and it works perfectly.

I deal with people with leased cars all the time. They buy the adjustable holder once, and of course the appropriate dash mount for their car. The mount clips into crevices in the dash so no damage is done. When you turn in the car, pop the mount off, buy the mount for your new car and reattach the cradle. Sell the old mount on ebay to make a few dollars back.

I hope Ibolt fixed all the problems they had with their dock. I had one for my note 2. Then they updated their product due to problems so I bought the new one. The new version has problems to and would wear out. That is why I changed to the Exogear one. Plus when I had it on my windows, it would full off the windows on hot days. never had that problem with the Exogear. I like the Aux hook up on the ibolt but once i got a 40 Apt x connector I no longer need it.
If anyone needs a good apt x bt to aux device take a look at this.

I've used a CD mount for years. I wish there was something else as reliable. My mount covers the receiver's panel.
I have the exo gear and its awesome

Car mount recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a decent car mount? My dash is textured, so the suction ones don't work, and I hate the ones that stick to the windshield.
Does your dash have enough of a flat spot for a weighted base? That's what I use in my car (a Honda Civic). The base stays put and then I can suction whatever mount I want to it.
It's a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, so the flat surfaces are lacking.

I see two options for you, then.
1) A mount that clips onto an air vent.
2) A mount that has a rigid/flexible arm that sticks out of the cigarette lighter.
A CD-slot mount would be perfect for that dash since there's no screen/buttons/etc above the CD. Amazon has quite a few to check out.
Try the brodit website
For me.. I would get some kind of wireless charging dock..one that's attractive (airdock, the Samsung one etc) and mold it in to the trim. That fo-brushed aluminum trim to the right of the push to start button would be my spot. Pop off that plastic, run the wires behind it and mold in the mounting bracket using advanced wood putty (its called wood putty but the epoxy kind is plastic, very hard and strong) sand and blend..paint to match..bam a seamless transition as if it was always ment to be there =) ..that's what my projects always turn in to lol
The magnet ones are good if you are using a case.

I was looking at the magnet ones. They have them for the cd slot too. Does the magnet affect wireless charging?
I got this at Walmart yesterday and it works great, http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/Scosche-Magnetic-Dash-Mount/37699955

I've had the Brodit for many years now and its brilliant. I bought one for my S3 and I can adjust it for each subsequent phones. Available on Amazon also but you do need the clip for your car and the holder for the phone. Worth the money.
May be you will like this product,
you can search ebay item id:201268839849
just only $4.59
There are lots of options if regular suction cups don't work:
Brodit makes custom mounts for lots of car models. You then have to buy the matching holder for your phone.
There are CD-slot mounts if you have a slot load CD player but don't use it.
There are suction cup mounts which work on textured surfaces like the iOttie one I just linked.
There are mounts which anchor into the 12 V plug or into a cup holder.
You can get a plastic disc that has a foam adhesive sticker on one side and a flat smooth surface on the other as a base for a regular suction cup.
As someone else just mentioned there are friction mounts which put a heavy weight on the dash..but those scare me. The potential for a heavy object to become a projectile in an accident is enough to stop me from considering that.
You can also use a combination of these solutions if there is something compatible (17 mm ball joint, AMPS plate) between the car mount and the phone holder. Hope one of those options works for you. I've had a brodit base with a number of things attached to it for the past 6 years.
I use the kenu airframe

The iBolt xProDock is my favorite:

I second the Kenu Airframe but you'll probably want the Airframe+ for this phone.

Is this compatible with the s6? I have one of these that I bought alongside my htc m8 and am waiting to hear back from ibolt about if it's possible to swap out the charging arm with one for the s6, or if I need an entirely new dock.

The last dash mount I bought for my car included a flat plastic disk that you secured with the 3M 2-sided sticky tape. You mount the suction cup mount to that, and it's rock-solid.

I'm not sure if the Dock'n'Play functionality works, I connect and stream over Bluetooth so I don't use that feature. I just think that the holder itself is solid and my S6 fits fine in a TPU case. This and the previous gen, smaller iBolt are the two most solid mounts I've ever used.

Nexus 6P Vehicle Mount thread (car holder, not universal))

I'm looking for a vehicle mount for my 6P but can only find the universal type right now.
If anyone else is in the market for a non universal for one please post your findings here!
I always use a Dashmount bracket specific to the vehicle and a Brodit active cradle specific to the handset. Usually takes Brodit a little while after a new phone has been released to make a new cradle.
Yeah, I'm looking for one as well. The previous universal one I had is too small for the 6P. It will just precisely fit for my Xperia Z.

Ill be using this, have had it since my Nexus 5 and it holds my Nexus 6 Currently so will have no issues with the 6P

I've got this one, one of the best mounts I've ever found, super sticky gel suctioncup that stays in place forever, hot ass NM summers, cold winters, stays there.
Already know it fits because I put the verus case in it, fits perfectly. Automatic too, you push your phone in and the arms snap shut. Push the two toggles and the phone comes off.
Don't know anything about them, but I saw a bunch of SlipGrip mounts when I was looking around on eBay:

I have this for my Galaxy S6 Edge (The S6 attaches to it without a magnet but it comes with one).
I loved it. I hate those suction ones that go on the windshield.

Unfortunately,
I'm not going to use it with my 6P as I don't think it has magnets to hold it up and I don't want to use the strip as I want to show off that Nexus logo.
Alas, I'm giving it to my girlfriend.
I highly recommend a CD one like the one I linked though, it's nice and sleek!
I've been using this for a little over a year now and happy with it

Hey!
Do you mind taking a picture of that in your car or something?
I want to see how bulky it is / looks.
Happy to oblige

Oops, didn't quote you but I posted a picture of it in my car.
Check out ram mounts. They have a great selection that fits all types of vehicles.
Here's mine which is custom mounted for my MINI.

That mount setup looks terrific! How does the Ram mount connect to that custom arm. I believe the ram mount has a ball joint on the back, and I'm curious as to how you did yours up.
Pro Clips are well worth the money. 6p will be the 3rd phone that will go in mine. Still good as new.

Giving this one another recommendation. Have it in my Subaru for almost two years now.
It's very solid and sturdy.

Thanks! You're correct. My friend cut the ball off and drilled a hole through. Fits great!
Ram mounts came out recently with a modified version, similar to what we did but it also comes with a screw /nut set.

I use the same one and love it! Great for when I'm using GPS.
Kenu Airframe is pretty good.
I'm using it couple of years.
