Craigsdocks.com/Portrait Version mini review - HTC Sensation

Craigsdocks.com
I just ordered the portrait one because I have limited desk space at work, so this can replace my N1 dock that I sold.

He does sell a landscape version as well.
The reason why I preferred to get this is because:
1. They are pretty customized for the Thunderbolt and the creator confirmed that it could be used for the Sensation because of the adjustable dock adapter he created.
2. I can use this with any case I finally decide on and can be adjusted accordingly with the removal and reapplication of 3m double sided tape and an adjustment of the hex screw.
3. They are cheaper than OEM and not from overseas

In use! Low bandwidth no need to view lol...
If you want more screenshots let me know lol...
This custom dock originally sold for the HTC Thunderbolt. Upon a few emails to the fabricator (or Craig himself), he told me that this dock would work because of the customization of the side plug. I opted for the portrait version because of my limited real estate on my work desk. This dock does not trigger any dock apps, it is solely there to charge and hold and can be adjusted to whichever case your hearts content. For me that was the biggest selling point.

Update: Been using this great dock everytime I am at work and I have connected it to my front usb on my desktop. Works great. Removing and inserting the phone is smooth as you can imagine because upon install with or without a case depends on how you adjust the plug on the dock. If you ever need to adjust it, you just need to get more double sided tape which the seller happily provides. You just have to remove the old one of course and clean the tape adhesive before applying the new one.
But as of using this dock it is great for the price and not regretting it at all. If anyone is looking for an adjustable portrait or landscape dock like these, these are worth it.

mini bump
Craigsdocks.com have since made verticle, horizontal and now car cradle that can be used with the Sensation. It's a pretty cool concept. My only gripe is the double sided tape that is used to mount the car cradle, but that's personal preference.

I'm glad you bumped this up. I was going to start on my trek to find a HTC branded dock. I really like the portrait position of this unit. Plus, machined in the good ol' US of A is always a plus too!
I'm guessing it's a good idea to double sided tape the dock to your desk surface as well? Can you dock/undock with one hand?

The car dock was the thing I was referring to as the mounting point. Where some others use a suction cup thingy.
But as for the portrait dock which I have. The double sided tape is really for the positioning of the usb plug when you first install it; with or without a case. And yes I can release take it off and place it back with one hand. Only thing is that your case would need to have a mostly flat back in that case. Then you can easily remove and dock it with one hand. I only use two hands because the usb plug does grip pretty well most times lol.....
I really can't stress it enough is that you indeed get what you pay for with respects to criagsdocks.com. The dock is nice and heavy so that you can undock one handed.

LOL nope, just want to spread the word on great products when it's not a big company involved. When someone wants to give us a product we want, I want to reciprocate by letting everyone know.
I mean it's still up to your own opinion, I was offering my .02.

I picked up the landscape model last week. I'm very impressed with it.
I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and support the community for this rather than some plastic junk from China.

LOL it's the normal wallpaper lockscreen. But I use Gravity Home found in the market. I think the free version now has all the settings as well as the paid one. Try it out. All the icons you see are functional. Real cool stuff IMO.

Not with sense. You would have you use an alternative launcher. Adw, launcher pro, etc.
You can also stand the phone up in portrait without charging on the landscape model.

ok, thanks for the information!

I liked their Portrait model so much I picked up a car mount as well. My proclipusa mount won't work with a case on the phone and I have to have a case on this guy. Overall I'm very impressed with this small company!

[Q] Docks?

Does anyone know if there could be some docks available for this? Maybe horizontal so as to watch a movie while its charging or something similar?
Yes
I bought the $40 LG G2X Dock from T-Mobile. It's not very impressive.
It can hold your phone sideways but you need to plug in the cord to the phone instead of the dock having a built-in plug. It only has a built-in plug for vertical stance.
Also, it doesn't trigger any "Bed-Side Alarm Clock/Weather" app. Just shows the lock screen with time and alarm clock, and battery charge % status at the top.
I'd look around for third party docks. I know I will be.
Yes I guess third party docks will have to be... just dont know if they will be able to trigger the "bed-side" app.
I know this sucks on the MT3G dock that I got... it got the foryo, but the dock doesnt trigger anything, and I cant do any changes to profiles, since it has to be done when connected to the dock only.

There is no G2X Dock from T-Mobile - the only official accessories are screen protectors and a case.
Nevermind, just found them, and apparently there IS a car dock.
For vehicles, my 10$ Amazon mount works like a champ.

I didn't see the dock at the store.
I've used the dock with my Nexus One from the day it came out and I was really hoping for something similar, but without the frictionless pads it's hard to do it right.
Guess I'll just have to make a shortcut to Clock on my home screen and use that instead, or until, a "real" dock comes out.

Bought the cardock today from a t-mobile store.
It feels nice and secure inside, fits well, whole thing moves well.
Unfortunately, it's not powered or magnetized - the dock is a pretty hunk of plastic. You'll need to have some other way to launch car dock, and plug up your own power cable every time.

Its def magnetized. When I dock my phone, car home starts right up.
I also have the lg desktop dock. I managed to push in the USB slot in the back the first time I plugged it in. I fixed it, but the phone doesn't launch the clock app when its docked. Does anyone else have the desktop dock and have the same problem? Debating on exchanging it.

Any negative effect from Sun for phone when in car dock

I noticed the phone gets hot when it's in the windshield mount car dock, are there any negative effects from prolonged use in the sun heat? I know nav units are tested for that kind of use in the sun but I'm not too sure about our phones. I'd appreciate any feedback, don't wanna screw up my phone
Sent from my HTC One X
I know iPhones shut off when they get too hot, not sure about Android. It can damage the battery, I think, as well. Not sure what sort of advice to give, though.
Thanks for the input. Anybody else with experience using a windshield mounted dock? Maybe I should make some sort of plastic thing that clips to the dock and provides shade to the phone, something similar to this: http://www.glarestomper.com/324.html but not exactly because this one does not keep the sun from hitting the back of the unit, it's just so you can see the screen.
I would definitely worry about it. Hell, I bet most phones will overheat just fine in the shade, if you run them plugged into the charger for hours with GPS on and the screen at full brightness. Adding direct sunlight to the equation is just begging for trouble IMO.

Get a vent clip mount and then you'll have air circulating around the phone at all times! Nevermind that those kinds of mounts can be pretty shoddy and break your vents.
I went with the right hand mount. They're free and fully adjustable anywhere within arms reach

Actually, they are well made, solid and pretty nice material. As far as CD player, all appears fine, but on the same token, this is actually the non used factory unit. My blue tooth deck is installed below. A suction cup system on the other hand, bad placement, for me at least
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Cup holder mount (depending on where exactly those are located on your car) seems less than ideal if you are using the phone for Navigation.
I use the Mountek CD slot mount same as the photo posted above (except mine is stock, [email protected] modded his to combine it with the EVO 4G LTE dock). On my car, the position is similar to the above pic, up high on the dashboard, for good viewing if using for Navigation.
If your AC is on, and the vents are anywhere close to the phone (even if not pointed directly at the phone) I wouldn't worry much about overheating the phone, even if in direct sunlight. Pretty sure the phone will shutoff if it starts to overheat. Given, its a heck of a lot sunnier and warmer in Florida than Boston, but I haven't had any issues with direct sunlight up here. Leaving something on the dash with the windows closed, and the car off is one thing. But if you're driving the car, and the AC is on, or even the windows open, I wouldn't worry that much about the temperature.

+1 to this. The Mountek mount is very well made, and works great. Most every cupholder, air vent, suction cup mount is crap in comparison. You can see from the numerous positive reviews on Amazon, many of which compared it to other mounts, and found the Mountek superior. If you don't use your CD player, its a great solution. It doesn't harm the CD player at all, aside from possibly deforming the fabric or brush "dust guard" in the slot.

I won't be using it for navigation because my hu already does have navigation. My biggest objective is to keep my device charged up and have the car mode auto switch on the Bluetooth, as well as keep my hands free and away from my device. Anyways, i will post pics of the end result once i receive my stuff in the mail.

Cheap car dock off eBay

So I ordered this car dock from eBay, it cost 3 something bucks and is really solid for that price. Haven't had time to test it out in the car, but it seems really sturdy and tight, it's not moving around and the overall quality is epic at that price point.

The plate has holes for LED flash and the camera, so it doesn't hide anything and the camera works fine. Speaker hole has been cut as well, using turn-by-turn navigation is not an issue.
Pros:
Cheap
Durable
Fits well
Doesn't cripple any features
Cons:
The ball head is not 360 degrees and comes blocked at some point, should have more moving range.
Doesn't fit with a case (whoever does that pornography and hides the design, do not buy this)
This looks pretty good.
Could you please post a link to it on ebay (assuming it wasn't a once-off auction by someone)?
I'm not sure if that would be considered spam or against the forum rules or anything, please PM a link to me if that is the case.

Seems I made a mistake about pricing, it was 3 pounds, not bucks, but it's still so cheap that it's not worth mentioning
I also have this. Works perfect! Stable.
I only worry about that in time, the color will go off, where the top clip goes over the phone..

Why the bluetooth? Using an AUX cable works the same way basically. Been there, done that.
Pay attention to the phone holder. The one pictured above has the camera hole on the right side as you're facing it - which means the charging port comes on the top side of the phone (assuming you're using it in landscape mode for navigation. Most I've seen (including the one I've ordered) are the same, only one on ebay seemed to be the right way (camera hole on left side as you're looking at it, so charging port on the bottom side).
You can of course turn the holder the other way around (as I did), but then you lose the benefit of the two supporting corners.
Huh? The charger is still at the bottom and the camera and the flash work the way they should. I don't see the problem with this?
Is the dock in the OP work with phone that have a case?

To answer my own question. I see it it's a just a mount with no charger, so the answer is no unless you already have a standalone car mode charger, which I don't think exists.

FYI, if you want car mode you can spend 15 bucks for HTC's car mode cable (available at HTCPedia) or you can get HTC's own car dock for the One S (about 55 bucks), which is a high quality product that fits the phone perfectly and no need to connect the cable each time. I just got it and am very happy with it.

...to my 3D printed dock.
Slide coil in, PCB is held with double sided tape. Pretty straightforward.
A bit of PCB is trimmed off to make space for the connector. I did cut off the speaker, it's too loud for me.
Messy inside but hey, you can't see them!
Result:
And the back:
I have my SKP (Google SketchUp) files attached below, feel free to use or modify!
If you're actually going to send these files in for printing, make sure you double check all measurements!
-----EDIT-----
It appears that some of you may be interested in making one. I just made this model public at Shapeways http://shpws.me/oi3O.
This is designed to fit parts from "GMYLE (TM) Wireless Charging Pad Powermat Mat Charger". Other models may not fit and you'll have to modify.
You can download the model and make the walls thinner, engrave some text/logo, etc. The less material the cheaper it is.
Putting it together is very straightforward once you have the parts in your hand and use the the pics above as references.
...BEAUTIFUL. The routing hole for the speaker is also really well-done and subtle. Is there a cover for the bottom to protect the PCB? I'd be slightly worried about the exposed copper from the cut, unless there isn't any.
Wow...that's amazing. Far better than anything else I've seen.

Very nice, you should sell the empty dock along with instructions of how to transfer the innards, that way I think you'd be safe from copyright infringement cos you're actually encouraging people to buy the other product and not copying any of the manufacturing process.
How is the coil held in place?

It's sitting on a wooden nightstand so I'm not too worried about anything shorting out.
If i ever need to place this on some metallic surface the plan is to stick a transparency sheet below with some double sided tape on the edge, this should do the job.

I was gonna get it in black but for some reason black cost more, so I thought forget it.
You are free to send the files to any shop; I did it at shapeways:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/1146133/nexus-4-qi-charging-dock.html
This is the first time I have a model printed in that material, wasn't sure about its strength so the I made walls quite thick.
With some modification to the model the cost could go down to $40 something.

Very nice, you should sell the empty dock along with instructions of how to transfer the innards, that way I think you'd be safe from copyright infringement cos you're actually encouraging people to buy the other product and not copying any of the manufacturing process.
How is the coil held in place?

It's a public model on shapeways, please see the link from #6!
Coil is held in place with friction, no glue used so I can pull it out of that slot if needed.
PCB held with some double sided tape
Yes, how I put the parts together is nowhere near professional :silly: but good enough for personal use
Wow, very nice! Looks like a premium build, maybe you should start selling these...I'd pre-order.

Wow, it is a pretty cool product. Any thought on heat sinking?

I don't think that's required? Is there any wireless charger out there that comes with a heatsink?

I cannot agree more! I wish my Makerbot wasn't busted.
Hey guys, quick question(s)
1. Does wireless charging work with a case on? I have the ringke slim case, the one without the top and bottom of the phone covered.
2. Does anybody know of any online 3D printing solutions where i can send them the specs and they print it? The reason is i would like to modify it so, if i can charge w/case on, i can drop it in, no problems
Thanks majorly OP, seriously a superb job.

Wireless charging works with the Ringke Slim Case, I have it aswell.
Pretty sure you can modify it and let shapeways print it....
But it will probably still fit with the case.

Respect for your work.
Have you use 500-700mA charger or 1A?

I think that is a 500-700mA charger, at least that's what the spec says...

Car Holder with Spigen Slim Armor VIEW (with front cover opened)

I was wondering if anyone that uses this case is able to also use a Car Holder with it and if so if they can share the brand and model with us...
Cheers

honestly you would be able to remove the door. (but it might be a pain to do so, everytime in a car.) I would just use a bluetooth and sdrive for things it works with the door closed

Thanks for your input... But What is sdrive? How can I see the map with the cover closed?

s drive is a kind of like siri that acts to read out directions or messages or phone calls while activated for the galaxy. also if the map is needed you might need to take off the front. but the case does fold slim except for the latch. I would suspect most car holders would be able to handle it

In another thread a guy who owns this case said he has to take it out prior to putting the phone in the car holders, which sucks. Another user says he uses those car holders that have like a glue that dosent leave traces, do you know what I am talking about? He says he just sticks it there, but I dont have much confidence on those car holders...imagine if the phone falls from the holder and the screen breaks!
I use iMagnet dock. My dock is close to the dashboard of the car so when I leave the cover open, it's not flapping around.
Anyone know if the Genuine Samsung Car Holder will work with this case, with the front cover opened?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-In-Car-Vehicle-Compatible-Galaxy/dp/B007Y94CPO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1381397911&sr=8-3&keywords=samsung+s4+car+holder
This original samsung car holder looks pretty solid but from the pictures it dosent look it has depth enough to hold the S4 with the Spigen Slim Armor View...
Does anyone uses this case with a car holder for in car GPS navigation ?
Cheers
I am looking at getting one of the brodit active docks.. specifically this one..
from what I can tell, there is room behind the phone that the flip may fit in.. I have had tons of these brodit docks for phones over the years.. they are expensive, but found the quality is there.. and I need the install to be as clean as possible.. no unsightly wires etc...

Thanks. But from the second picture (side view) it dosent look to have enough depth for this case with the from cover open, don't you agree? From looking at the photo there's just enough room for a normal slim case, without a front cover...

Ya. I see what you mean. The lid does fold pretty flat in the back. May have to ring brodit up again and see if they have measurements of see if their distro has one in stock for me to test.

I just found out that my go to supplier for all my previous car mounts make one for the spigen armor View.
Slipgrip is the name of the company. I've had 3 of their mounts for my 3 previous phones and all have worked perfectly

Thanks for that info. But I was on their site and I only see mounts for the S4 when using the Spigen Slim Armor case, not the VIEW version. Am I missing something? The objective was using the GPS on the phone with the front cover opened to the back, so we could see the maps.
Maybe it will work with those universal car holders, the ones with claws. Or the ones with that kind of glue where we simply stick the phone... anyone has tried that yet?
Cheers

Oops my apologies you're correct. I gave up on this case in the end after reading some more reviews in this forum.
I wrongly assumed that case was one and the same.
Sorry.

I use mine in a Mountek dash mount. Works fine. I'm sure the extra pressure will eventually wear the hinges on the case faster, but life is too short to worry much about that.
