[Q] Nexus One - Installing larger SD card - General Questions and Answers

Nexus One, Rooted, Cyanogenmod7, 4GB Sd card, Rom Manager, Titanium Backup Pro. S2E (simple2ext)
Awhile back I was out of internal memory for apps. I used Rom Manager to partition my SD card to add a 256mb ext3 partition, then used S2E to trick the os into thinking this partition is internal memory. It worked.
Soon enough, the 4GB card still wasn't big enough. Using Clonezilla, I cloned the 4gb card to image, then wrote the image to an 8gb card. I then used Gparted to expand the ext3 partition to just under 2 gb and expanded the fat32 partition to use the available space. This worked. This was an experiment as I have a 16 GB card I ultimately want to use.
While still on the 8gb card, I moved a couple of apps from SD back to internal. In S2E I checked the box regarding ext4 partition - I believe it changes the ext3 to ext4. Everything continued to work properly.
A few days later, I made the move to the 16gb card as follows:
I used Clonezilla to write the original 4gb image to the 16gb card and used Gparted to enlarge the partitions.
I put the card in the Nexus One and turned it on. It started up, but instead of LauncherPro (which I had set up before) ADB launcher started. Certain apps are missing such as Rom Manager (the Rom Manager Key is in the app drawer, but not Rom Manager. LauncherPro is missing. Google Play is missing. S2E is missing. Titanium Backup is there, but says it can't acquire root privileges.
Any advice on how to get this working again?
Thanks!

I think I may have figured it out. I went back to the 8gb card, started the phone, opened S2E and changed the settings back to the way I remembered them - unchecked the ext4 box and (and this may have been the culprit) unchecked the "Move application data". I had checked this while the 8gb card was in the phone. When I went back to the 4gb image that info was lost (because it had been moved to the 8gb sd card).
I also uninstalled a couple of apps I had installed on the 8gb card. I basically tried to return it to the way it was just after putting the original image on it.

[Q] Only 1GB on 8 GB SD card mounts

I have rooted my Nook Color (Blue Dot) with Clockwork, and CM7 Nightly install from 11-16-2011. I installed all the OS data on the internal memory in the Nook. I have a 8GB SD (Class 10) card that that I used to do the root, but now when I try to mount the SD to use to install apps to it, I can only get 1GB as SD Card and the rest mounts as /mnt/emmc. I can't seem to get it to mount the whole card as SD. I have tried using a partition manager on a Windows and Linux machine to partition it, but that did not work. Is there something that I am doing wrong? I want to be able to use the whole card mounted since I use apps and a 512 MB Swap file. One thing that I thought it may be is when I rooted the Nook I used the the 1GB image of Clockwork 3.2.0.1 since I could not find a 8GB image. The only 8GB image I could find was of CWM 3.0.2.8. I don't think that that would be the problem though. You guys have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. MODS, you can move this to the Android Forum if needed.
nevermind misread your q

That is how CM roms mount the external SD cards.
So I won't be able to mount the card and run more than 1GB of apps from it? Or is there a way to mount it and run the apps from /mnt/emmc. Also, when I remove the SD card, the mount of the SD card at the top (the 1GB one) stays mounted...should it?

Yes the one that stays mounted is your internal storage system. If it only has a max of 1gb then that is all you can store on it. The only way to safely unmount the the internal storage is in recovery as it is not using it but it is not advised. You can find an app that will move apps to SD card and have some bigger apps on there but mind you widgets will not work if the app is on the SD card. Here is a screen shot of my device. The 1.3 gb is my phones on board storage and the 29.81 gb is my external 32 gb sd card.
Ok, thanks for the info. What app is that that you took a screen shot of, and off the top of your head, you know of any that will flip the apps to the SD card? If not I will research it, I am sure it can't be to hard to find one.

The app is android assistant and depending on your OS version apps2sd should work. I know never versions of the OS has the ability built in
Ok. I tried Link2SD, but it said it was moving it to the SD card, but it moved it to the 1GB mount not to the /mnt/emmc where I have the 7.5GB of free space. I will try the apps2SD and see if that works. Thanks a lot bud.

Ok, no worries. I will continue working on it. if I find anything out I will post back. Thanks for your help.
I figured it out...
If you have the "Use internal storage" checked under CyanogemMod Settings/Application CM7 will mount the SD card as mnt/emmc and create a 1GB partition and mount it as mnt/SDCard. If you un-check it and then reboot, the SD Card will be mounted as mnt/SDCard and the internal partition will be mnt/emmc, allowing you to use the whole SD Card for storing apps, while still being able to store the apps on the main internal partition. I am glad I figured that out, now I can load more apps, and use the swap file.

[Q] Want to replace SD card , (JaggyRom)

Hey , I am using custom rom (Jaggy Rom) on my HTC explorer, its working perfectly. I am using 2GB card, but where is my 512 mb gone i mean , apps are automatically installed in SD-card but in FAT partition, so question is what is ext-4 partition for? Where it is used?
And 2ndly i am also planning to change my sd-card from 2gb to 4gb, can u help plz. Thanx
if you have created a partition in the SD card you need to use a memory increasing script like Mount2SD or Ungaze...when you install this script the 512MB of the ext-4 partition will show up as your phone's internal memory.

Thanks for reply, mount2SD is preinstalled in jaggyrom 4.1, and will you help me on changing my SD card?
and how can i confirm if apps are installing on SD card. Mount2SD is installed, and i think script is working , because my phone is showing constant internal memory on installing apps (i.e about 160 mb even if i install apps or uninstall them)
changing your SD card as in? what are you asking, please be clear...
and in Mount2SD it usually shows the partition memory added up in the internal memory.I haven't installed Jaggyrom anytime but i have used Mount2SD and it always showed me the partition memory as a part of my internal memory....so not sure what's wrong.
Download disk usage app from play store..it will show how much memory is used in your SD card as well as your internal memory..just so you will get a clear idea

Changing my SD cards mean i want to switch the card, i m using 2gb currently and i want to replace with 4gb or 8gb
If you want to replace it make sure you buy a class 10 SD card..because most of people using sense based ROM are experiencing random reboots with class 4 SD cards...class 10 SD cards are much faster while transfering files...I would recommend 8GB class 10 SD card.
Alright but i have installed custom rom. When i take out my card from phone it dosn't works, and i want to copy previous sd-ext partition data to new card can u help how can i
I don't think so that any of the CWM or TWRP recovery supports the back-up of SD-ext..I would rather recommend you to use Titanium back-up to create back-up of all your current apps and than transfer the titanium back-up folder in your SD-card to your PC/laptop and than insert your new SD card and paste that titanium back-up folder which contains the back of all your apps (including apps in SD-ext) and download the titanium back-up app via play store and restore those apps.
Well thanx, What if i clone/copy my old ext partition to my new card's ext partition?
I don't think that will work. the best option you have is to make a titanium backup. if you don't wanna do that then save your sd card data ( data in fat 32 partition) and paste that in your new card. it will save you game progress, but titanium backup is the best way to go.
Well, that means i have to make a titanium backup and thn again install the custom rom i wil lose my settings

[Q] How to use link2sd?

Hi All,
I have a galaxy s2 plus (gt-i9105p) with android version 4.1.2.
Because of the limited space on the internal sd card I thought it would be nice to have apps on an extra external sd card. But I haven't managed to do this so far, is it possible?
To use link2sd the app info says:
-The phone needs to be rooted.
-A second partition on your SD card is required
My phone is rooted, but I'm having problems creating a second partition on the ext. sd card. I tried the "MiniTool Partition Wizard". Because it didn't recognize the sd card (there is no letter assigned), I activated the usb mass storage option on the phone (via: app terminal emulator:su -> setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage,adb -> reboot). This worked, so I created two partitions, one with fat32 (primary) and the other with ext2 (primary). Then windows explorer started to freeze up and the ext sd card was no longer accessible. On the phone it said "damaged sd card." I reformated it and so I'm back to where I was.
Also partitioning via de CWM is not working. It doesn't seem to do a thing.
Any help to get link2sd working is appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul
well i guess time for an upgrade... 4.2.2 has built in functionality of moving apps to sdcard

It moves only apk file with libs (or without) to mnt/asec and takes memory from extsdcard, but doesn't create any folders/files in it.

Try using the app called "Aparted" by Sylskat. I made an ext 4 with but I dont know what happened and it turned to ext 2, maybe my card doesnt support that kind of storage. But the partition I created with it works. Also it has swap support, if you want

TWRP partitioning external SD doesn't work (Unable to locate device to partition)

Hi,
since the internal storage of my 8GB Moto G3 is pretty small, I wanted to move apps to my external SD, but there is only a hand full of apps I can move.
So now I wanted to partition the external SD I have, but when I want to start the partitioning, it says "E: Unable to locate device to partition".
When I google for exactly this error message, I can't find any solution. I formatted the SD via the phone, I also formatted it via PC to FAT32 and exFAT and I formatted it via TWRP to exFAT and also to EXT3 and EXT4, none of these methods worked.
I also tried it with the MicroSD mounted and unmounted, made no difference.
Also can I make the external SD to the main storage for the phone, so all apps put their files on the SD card like Whatsapp, without symlinking every folder manually?
All apps won't move to the SD. I'm guessing that if the developer specifies internal, that's all you get. On the first soak you could force apps to external which I tried with mixed results. A few would work, some wouldn't. Even on the latest, some app's widgets won't work if the app is on external.

Having the same issue here, I have a brand new Santin 128gb and I want to partition it to my HTC One M9, I formatted it and then wanted to immediately partition it and then I am receiving the same error and cannot find anything else online.
Same problem here I've got a Lexar 32 GB Micro SD.
Same problem here, with twrp 2.8.2.0

Android 6.0 sd card internal external storage

Ive read a few forum thread but im still not sure so i need a conformation from anyone who really know about this stuff.
1. I set my sd card as internal storage . Unfortunately i cant use it as external storage. Maybe we can set two partition, one for internal ext4, and another fat32 as i use before for link2sd. But i think this wont work too. Is this correct?
2. Assuming setting it as two partition wont happen, i want to make use the foldermount apps to store data and obb in sd card. I tried, but it wont work. Write permission or something else. Do i have to patch it like kitkat before to enable it foldermount still not supported.
Im now back on lollipop rom until those issues solve.
Device - redmi 2, 8gb 1gb ram.
Sd card for external storage reasons, titanium backup, nandroid backup, media stuff.
Reason not using otg- more hassle, need to carry the cable. I reflash rom every day, sometime twice a day.
