Are all One S models going to have the S3 chip now?!?! - HTC One S

Just noticed this on the HTC UK website:

How is this an S3 chip?

EDIT: or do you mean the Snapdragon S4?

Or do you mean Snapdragon S4?

Well i noticed on another thread that the S4 was in short supply, So thats the reason for the overclocked S3 chip in the indian version of the One S.
Maybe the OP is thinking about this ?
Who cares ? I got mine and mines an S4 chip lol

Well the Taiwan model is being launched with 1.7 GHz but it's Snapdragon S3 as opposed to 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4.
The UK site now says 1.5 - 1.7 GHz which makes me think they are going to start releasing old gen Snapdragon S3 internationally now.

Yes, I am only concerned because I don't want to swap my phone after it's chipped and get a Snapdragon S3 in return and still have no guarantee of non chipping. Might as well stick with the chipping S4.

Apparently HTC support says the S3 version will be released globally.
Hooray for the new One S: Handicapped Sibling Edition.

haha !!
But on a serious note, this is ridiculous !! Just make some more, problem solved !
Or at least do a discount, cause its not as described

She also told me that she knows nothing about the so called redesigned version with beveled USB port, and it is likely to be a rumour/fake. Which is quite possible since those pics are nowhere except on one random forum.

It's not under HTC's control, Qualcomm (well, technically TSMC) makes the chips.
That said, if these S3-powered phones get sold in places where the S4 version is already available it will be a huge mess and a really dumb move on HTC's part.

Old SoC is the new Crap Screen!
HTC is known to change the screens in their phones for stock problem (ie:the swap to SLCD from AMOLED in Nexus One) or cost reductions (ie: SLCD manufacture change for the MyTouch 4G) and it look like they apply this habit to the SoC now.

According to the support again, I asked if there is any way to identify the difference, and supposedly the retail packaging will have a different model number on it to distinguish S3/S4.
Still, really stupid.

Considering that S4 is faster than their flagship quad core and even GS3, this might be happening for 2 reasons:
1. HTC wants to increase One X sale, and they do not want some other model to steal the thunder.
2. Samsung purchased all S4s for themselves, or bribed the company making them. Something similar happened in the past - they used the fact they owned the company making amoleds in Desire vs Galaxy battle. So stopped shipping them and turned the tables in favor of their Galaxy S. That's how I got my SGS, they had no Desires in stock.

But surely it shouldnt matter to HTC which devices sells more ? Its still revenue, They are hardly competing against themselves lol
But you could be on to something with the samsung thing, Ive seen things get nasty between these giant phone companies.
Apple sue Samsung, Samsung sue Apple, Everybody Sues Everybody...

Well this sucks I was planing on getting this phone when it becomes available in my country and was excited for that but now after reading this I'm disappointed and probably go with something else unless s4 become available here. This is bad news from htc and will probably lose a lot of users with this move specially now when sgs3 is coming out.

It may lose users, but may not be a lot, think most of end users do not even know what is chip, CPU, gpu, etc, it makes no difference to them either s4 or s3 since they have no idea it was s4 then now s3. And, even if they know, HTC oc s3 to 1.7G, they will think 1.7 is awesome which, maybe is.
Not to say this is a right thing, HTC shouldn't do this change cos s4 was one of the selling point of one s, just like quad core on one x. However, it's all down to business which is to maximize revenue, so a understandable move but shame.

This news / confirmation of rumors is the best news for all SGS phones since the SGS line was released! This all but guarantee's we will get Honeycomb when it comes out and it should be ported quickly!

I totally agree with you. It looks pretty fugly compared to the cap. I was actually thinking that it could have been pretty sexy if they had taken the Omnia 7 style chasis and android-fied it and thrown in some more metal instead of cheap feeling plastic.

This will be awesome as long as Samsung doesn't do the same douchebaggery they've made themselves known for as far as updates and support. Once this drops I'll probably buy this and ditch my Cappy.

I wonder if they're delaying it because of the GPS...
I hope it's the same hardware and we'll see a port, I'm not about to but another super phone, although the ffc and presumably hsupa and possibly hspa+ do make it tempting even if it's the same hardware.
If it's new hardware, I'll be mad I bought the captivate.

The hardware should be relatively similar, probably most similar to the Epic 4g. I base this on the fact that it was originally supposed to be out Nov 14 (I forgot where I read this, androidandme.com maybe?), and that the model number is I9020. I highly doubt they put some next-gen hardware in it that would make it impossible to port the OS to our captivates.
I hope it comes with worth while hardware improvements if its only standard Galaxy S then there is no point upgrading if you already have Galaxy S variant..
how does this mean we are going to be the first ones to get gingerbread / comb? (not trying to be a ****, can't convey tone in type, this is a genuine question) I understand a port might be SLIGHTLY easier, but what if it has a lot of different hardware? (as someone who is not really familiar with phone development, I am genuinely curious) and I really don't think that the release of this will mean that samsung will continue to support its other phones (c'mon people, its sammy). I think Ill certainly buy one, WOOT for updates from google!

It ties in with it being easier to port to our phones, and I highly doubt it'll carry the new 1.2ghz processor.. considering that's slated for the new flagship samsung
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/exclusive-samsung-flagship-phone-with-gingerbread-and-huge-di/
come to think of it, this is samsung's dream phone, they get to utilize all their sexified hardware, and not have to give a crap about software updates since that would (presumably) be handled by google. I think it was meant to be <3 and also WHY THE HELL DOES T-MOBILE GET ALL OF THE DAMN GOOGLE EXPERIENCE PHONES!? (best buy's leaked info suggests it will be through t-mobile, heres to hoping that it carries the at&t bands like the vibrant does)

Well, the assumption was that it wouldn't have a lot of hardware differences (same cpu, gpu, modem, etc.), meaning that porting the rom over to work on the captivate would be a lot easier than something with next-gen hardware, which would necessitate writing custom drivers and whatnot.
Looks like my assumption is turning out to be false though. Sorry to wreck everyone's Friday afternoon with this, but check this article out:

Android Spec List for 2011 Holiday season

I got a spreadsheet going of a list of Android smartphones coming out in October and beyond. Feel free to edit/change whatever fixes need to be made.
goo.gl/bMFTS
Nice list. Just a few adjustments.
1) As far as I can tell the HTC Vigor will have HD screen, not a qHD. Minor, but still...
2) The HTC Ruby actually does have a qHD screen, but the res of qHD is 960x540, not 1280x720 (which is HD resolution)
3) No Droid HD? Maybe put it on there, but specs are scarce.
I don't think you've made it publicly editable, unless I'm just a fool.
EDIT: Also, is it just me or does the HTC Runnymede 2 have great specs, except for the low res screen. For that sort of price (if the link is to be believed) I'd expect at least qHD, probably HD res.
Quick question does the Samsung note have a stronger or better GPU than a Galaxy S 2? And I know the Samsung exynos chips are known to be battery savers how good are they power wise as strength and overclocking?

It will most likely be the same ARM-Mali 400 GPU. Its a more than capable GPU. Anandtech dug a little deeper on it recently.
What makes the Galaxy S II seem to drastically outpace newer devices like the Droid 3, whose 1 GHz OMAP 4 SoC also features an A9 processor? The special sauce, as Brian will delve into further in his upcoming review of the international Galaxy S II, is Samsung's ability to leverage the Mali-400 to accelerate UI elements and even elements of the browsing experience, as well.

Is shares the internals of the Note, which is probably nothing new: just a higher clocked Exynos soc. Nothing new to report after the GS2 actually, just some weak rumor...imho we'll have to wait for 2012 before we see something really "new" in terms of internals...

The only thing that worries me about the prime is the pentile display. The ones on the first galaxy s series were somewhat bearable for me but I hate the one on my atrix (luckily its a temporary phone), hopefully they make it a good display.

Super AMOLED Pentile? that doesn't make sense...isn't that two different types of screens, how could it be both?
I wish the Sammy Note was coming to Verizon, I like it a lot..
EDIT: No such thing as the Droid Prime, wish people would stop saying that. It's NEXUS PRIME...It's been said billions of times, Droid Prime was said once and now it's everywhere -.- Why the hell would Samsung make two devices called almost the same thing with the exact same specs on the same carrier? Does that make any sense at all? No one would be able to tell what they actually have...
EDIT2 : Just a thought, but I'm pretty sure that the SG2 LTE version that was rumored is actually the Nexus Prime..just a thought though. The article was somewhere on Android and Me or Android Central, can't remember. Also sure that it will have LTE, just wouldn't make sense if it didn't, unless they do the same thing they did with the Nexus S and release a 4G version later down the line...(which i doubt)
EDIT3: Engadget says that the Note is HSPA+, so it's for T-Mo or AT&T. Should be corrected on the chart for people that don't know..

Exactly the same situation here. If Samsungs new device sucks then its definately gotta be the S. Just hoping that the Galaxy's screen isnt as big as the One X's one. It's just too much... :what:

Well, even though it has it critics, and I do go through periods of using AOSP (and prob will on the S once it's available and stable) I still think Sense is the best custom UI on Android. Simple really, SGS3 can't match that element
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
Supposedly its going to have a 1080p screen, to me this is a bad thing.
1) I bet it is bigger than the ONE S and I wasn't quite happy with the size of the ONE X
2) It takes more horse power to run it, so its processor and graphics may be higher but side by side performance will probably be similar due to it having to push more pixels about the place. Also.. 1080p.. on a phone... What's the F'in point??
First i'm 100% sure that Galaxy S III won't have 2gb of ram neither 1080p screen. Its a next generation and since theres obvious settlement betwen manufacturers you can expect same specs as One X. And i'm also pretty sure that it won't have SD card, every manufacturer stops using them, why should they use them, about removable battery i'm not sure, if new galaxy is gonna be thinner then i guess it will have non removable battery.
I think the S3 will have 4.7 screen, so its big, also display will be as good as X. About other specs - I suspect quad core processor, some good graphic component, rumors about 12mp camera.
But anyway, there are only rumors atm, and Im not fan of S2, so I will go for One S as soon as it avaible here

If it takes T-mobile US as long as it did to get the Galaxy S 2....i'm not waiting.
But then again, i don't want to wait. Im tired of Samsung's plastic devices, ugly touch wiz, and international Galaxy S3 will be different from the US Galaxy S3, which will hinder dev support.
Im sure the one s will have great dev support like the sensation. Every one S around the world will be the exact same and will run the same roms.

kinda yes, I really like GS2 and SAMOLED Plus is great. But we still don't know if GS3 will be SAMOLED HD or SAMOLED HD Plus. It's most likely be the same size as One X, packing same or better CPU, probably same or better quality camera, and most likely missing things like notification light and noise canceling mic.

Same boat as @tf442. I have a "first month out" Vibrant and GPS has been abysmal from the get-go. I have flashed at least a dozen ROMS (probably more)from Bionix, Trigger all the way to ICS 4.0.4 and they vary, but still no where near other manufacturers GPS. I will not give $$$ to Samsung since they went on the pine in acknowledging any issues with GPS. That, and quit with FROYO. Not good for a top-end phone at the time.
I am eligible for upgrade now, but I don't think I am going to. I might wait out until mid to end-year to upgrade. I am pretty satisfied with my G2 still. Everyone swears it's a great backup phone, but I like it as my main phone all the same.

Detail of HTC One S S3 version

Accidentally found this page on wikipedia:
http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_One_S
[it is chinese though, so you need some translation magic from Google ]
BTW, i picked out the important part:
I translated it here:
[I'm not a good translator though, so please kindly tell me if i made any mistake]
Processor Controversy
Hardware wise, there are 2 variants of HTC One S(Euro and Asia-Pacific Version). Although Asia-Pacific version has a relatively higher clock rate of 1.7GHz, however due to the older architecture and structure, the 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 is still inferior to the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 MSM8260A. Apart from the weaker performance, with the overclocked processor from Sensation being packed inside such a thin body, the heat generated and power consumption of the CPU might just damage its screen, PCB or even the battery.
One of the explanation that HTC shifts from S4 to S3 is, due to the huge demand from AMD, Nvdia, Qualcomm, TSMC faces some really serious shortage of 28nm chips and because of it the launching of HTC One S, One XL and other S4 based device also have been delayed. Therefore, HTC changed the CPU of One S to S3 Snapdragon based on region.
The other rumored explanation is Qualcomm provided an improved version of MSM8260 to cover the loss of HTC due to the shortage of S4 chips. Therefore, the improved version is featured on the Asia Pacific version of One S. The improved MSM8260 is rumored that it offers similar level of power and heat management with MSM8260A and the only difference is the weaker performance, as it is using the older 40nm based structure.

And from the wikipedia, the international version has a model name of Z520e while Asia Pacific version has Z560e, which looks like it is a good indicator to differentiate between 1.5GHz S4 and 1.7GHz S3.
So what do you guys think now?
Thanks for the nice article! I think the S3 version is not just a Asia-Pacific model. On HTC uk and de the specs have changed to "1.5~1.7 Ghz". So maybe there are One S's in europe with a S3 on sale.

Looks like the quadrant standard score dipped a lot for the s4 HTC one s. Prior to the update, it was getting approximately 5000s.
But the s4 chip is still buttery smooth. Love it.

Would that mean new One S would need different section on XDA? So whatever number of S4s HTC sold till now - that's it? Then this forum will slowly die, as no new devs will be interested in it... This sucks, unless RUUs are completely compatible, so it would mean the roms would work on both. Any dev care to give us an opinion?

According to lots of people, the s3 version has model number z560e while the s4 is z520e. (Or s560e, s520e, look at the number not the letters), and s3 is clocked at 1.7GHz, s4 is at 1.5.
Both of these info can be found on the box.

I wanted to buy this phone and my friend is going to canada
S4 is still available there so should i get it from there. It would save money or i should get the s3 version from india but it would be a bit costly
I'm not getting it if it comes with the S3 chip in UAE, this is a total rip-off. I'll just go with the Sensation XE if there is no S4 chip. At least that phone is well made and a huge community exists for it.
I think this dev section would last longer because the other S3 chip would kill that device I think the HTC One S is a complete f*ck up by HTC. Don't get me wrong, I love my One S, but only ~10gb available and now not enough chips; the device itself just a flaw...
Any idea what the Z320e model is? It seems to be what's available, or at least what's listed here on Czech websites...

It's definitely a f*ck up wanted to buy this phone but after all of this I'm going with sgs 3.
HTC had exelent middle with HTC one s between HTC one x and HTC one v but now that is over, a phone that cud same even quad core phone with its performance.
Does anyone recieved one with S3 ??
I bought it yesterday, changed from HOX, because of its horrible quality standard. I really love this phone and why should HTC change the SoC. I think the only reason why they listed 1.5~1.7 GHz on there webpages is to clearify that two versions of this phone are avalible.
The HTC Ville for International Market and the HTC Ville C for the Asian Pasific Market.
Poor enough they changed the SoC in one area, but international...thats not possible.
Edit:
Here a small article from the verge
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/12/3079583/htc-one-s-s3-processor-asia-europe
Does anyone know what version of the Z320?
The CZ is only sold Z560 and Z320.
Thanks
I just received a One S with Z560e and "Dual core" on the box sleeve. It is a replacement HTC UK decided to send me after the repair process on my (S4) One S went wrong. Currently in communication with HTC for more information if they have sent me an S3 version.
I have a feeling though that HTC have made this change in a way that distributors might not easily tell apart, as the EAN barcode has stayed the same.
I can buy and S3 version only if RUUs are compatible. There is no one on the forum telling that RUUs are compatible. I live in India and there is no way of getting the S4 version.
my s3 become very hot when it is charging.
From this post on the Q&A forum there is a bit more information on identifying the S3/S4 variants.
The article he linked to has an apparent comment from HTC (link here) that says that in European markets where the S4 version has been sold before, both versions will be available for some time and then only the newer version (which I take to mean the S3 version).
So it looks like in the longer term the One S in Europe is intended to be based on the S3.

Agree on the white.
But......after all the low storage etc threads, argued In by yours truly, that HTC should release 32 and 64 gb options......HTC listened
Thanks HTC, now just announce the JB update for the One V (my soon to be secondary phone!)and you will continue to keep me as a customer / fanboy for life!

Agreed.
HTC was smart by making the end caps tinted already. Bet those things get nasty after some use. I usually prefer white but I'm way more jealous of the storage space than the color in this case.
It's just not fair ;(

I think HTC's strategy will continue to fail them. It's essentially the same phone they released months ago just it has more storage. This is what the One S should've been when it came out, BUT it also should've had NFC to future proof the device.
Hopefully the memory IC is compatible with our phones so we can just resolder them

It's not surprising to see HTC made this move to release a variation of one s with different colour and more storage space. And I don't think it's unfair to the "old" one s owner either.
Just like Samsung released S3 alpha in Japan which has better specs than the international S3, companies will never make perfect phone, at least release a perfect one at one time.
The very next day after a device is made available to public, it's already become "yeaterday's" gadget apparently and literally. Moreover we all believed one s was a near perfect masterpiece when we bought it and did not bother too much about the 16gig storage, so why should we complain it now 6 months down the road. And we all know, in 3 years time, or less, one s may only be grandpa's play tool...
Regarding the release of one s se in other countries, I guess it will be available in the future if HTC still wants to keep the one s line. Since I know some big Telecom company like orange uk has marked one s EOL, end of line/life. Or HTC is preparing something big to come in Christmas time.
I do think it would have been nice to have at least 32gig option when one s was released, however that was not the case...
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
They could just design it with a microSD slot, it's that simple.
I knew that when I got the phone but didn't think it would bother me so much.
Roming it would be much easier... It's like they took the two bad things from the iPhone... Can't understand that.
Still I love the One S!

I disagree. Even after the One S came out, it's specs didn't become obsolete. The galaxy s3 was released shortly after and even that is on par with the one S based on benchmarks. And as the way things are, a lot of phones are being released with almost similar specs, with the exception of cpu speeds (architecture may be more optimized but say, exynos and snapdragon 4 are very much on par) and ram, phones aren't being differentiated. Not unless the new batch of architecture cpu are released and even then, manufacturer still have to create a phone around it. So while yes, this Taiwan version only phone has more memory, it doesn't mean any one s, one x, are going to be a grandpa toy only time soon. I can see the iPhone 5 being obsolete the moment it came out and being a grandparent toy only (Samsung commercial hit it dead on) but the one s will still be a contender. In fact, the only phones that become obsolete the day after released, are budget phones. Aka, one v and people still complain they aren't getting updates.
