Samsung just got through announcing that they are not building a nexus device..but it was just another galaxy s device

Augh. And I just bought a new phone WTB vanilla, and that's what this is! CRAP!
please please pleeeaassee announce a version with ATT 3g bands (or have them built in like the Vibrant does). Bye bye captivate!

It went through the fcc, has the name NEXUS S (Nexus + Galaxy S) google on the back and 2.3 (Gingerbread) vanilla in the U.I. picture.
It's UNDENIABLE this is the NEXT Galaxy S/Nexus
Woot porting android 2.3 to our devices + first to get updates as nexus phone
This news / confirmation of rumors is the best news for all SGS phones since the SGS line was released! This all but guarantee's we will get Honeycomb when it comes out and it should be ported quickly!

Why can't these other Galaxy S phones have a nice back cover like the Captivate? The Cappy is still the nicest looking of all Galaxy phones.

I totally agree with you. It looks pretty fugly compared to the cap. I was actually thinking that it could have been pretty sexy if they had taken the Omnia 7 style chasis and android-fied it and thrown in some more metal instead of cheap feeling plastic.

I second that!!!!!
This will be awesome as long as Samsung doesn't do the same douchebaggery they've made themselves known for as far as updates and support. Once this drops I'll probably buy this and ditch my Cappy.

I wonder if they're delaying it because of the GPS...
I hope it's the same hardware and we'll see a port, I'm not about to but another super phone, although the ffc and presumably hsupa and possibly hspa+ do make it tempting even if it's the same hardware.
If it's new hardware, I'll be mad I bought the captivate.

The hardware should be relatively similar, probably most similar to the Epic 4g. I base this on the fact that it was originally supposed to be out Nov 14 (I forgot where I read this, androidandme.com maybe?), and that the model number is I9020. I highly doubt they put some next-gen hardware in it that would make it impossible to port the OS to our captivates.
I hope it comes with worth while hardware improvements if its only standard Galaxy S then there is no point upgrading if you already have Galaxy S variant..
how does this mean we are going to be the first ones to get gingerbread / comb? (not trying to be a ****, can't convey tone in type, this is a genuine question) I understand a port might be SLIGHTLY easier, but what if it has a lot of different hardware? (as someone who is not really familiar with phone development, I am genuinely curious) and I really don't think that the release of this will mean that samsung will continue to support its other phones (c'mon people, its sammy). I think Ill certainly buy one, WOOT for updates from google!

It ties in with it being easier to port to our phones, and I highly doubt it'll carry the new 1.2ghz processor.. considering that's slated for the new flagship samsung
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/exclusive-samsung-flagship-phone-with-gingerbread-and-huge-di/
come to think of it, this is samsung's dream phone, they get to utilize all their sexified hardware, and not have to give a crap about software updates since that would (presumably) be handled by google. I think it was meant to be <3 and also WHY THE HELL DOES T-MOBILE GET ALL OF THE DAMN GOOGLE EXPERIENCE PHONES!? (best buy's leaked info suggests it will be through t-mobile, heres to hoping that it carries the at&t bands like the vibrant does)

Well, the assumption was that it wouldn't have a lot of hardware differences (same cpu, gpu, modem, etc.), meaning that porting the rom over to work on the captivate would be a lot easier than something with next-gen hardware, which would necessitate writing custom drivers and whatnot.
Looks like my assumption is turning out to be false though. Sorry to wreck everyone's Friday afternoon with this, but check this article out:

It better not have the same lag issues as the current crop, otherwise im not buying it.
If it doesn't have tons of ram i don't want it.
omg it makes me so sad to see this after ive only had my captivate for a month but imagine what the next year or two will bring!
Unless the samoled 2 is also a solar panel, I don't experience the best battery life...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Probably gonna be bogged with RFS and and TouchWiz. If they bork the nexus S with RFS that will seriously suck. I know we can run lag fixes etc. but it would be nice to get a phone that doesn't need to be hacked just top be functional (totally would still root it, but its just the satisfaction of knowing that I wouldn't have to ^_^)
I'd still pick the Nexus S.
If the Captivate has such awful battery life, I can't imagine what a 1.2ghz processor and a 4.3" screen will do to it.
The Google Experience with a 4" screen is my dream phone. The S2 sure does look pretty though.
with all this extra power, bigger screen etc, I couldnt believe what kind of a battery it would need to be HALF DECENT.
Companies should stop competing in cpu wars, display wars etc and really revolutionize a battery that will last at least a full 24 hours with moderate usage.

This isn't fake at all. I have a very good source at Samsung who can confirm this device, although those slides are not final. Like Engadget said, these slides are 100% real from Samsung... they just used an image of a different device to get their point across. Not meant to be seen by the whole world.
Anyways, the device (which can be confirmed real by Engadget, BGR, AndroidCentral) is called the Samsung Elite: http://briefmobile.com/new-samsung-elite-specifications
It is the successor to the Galaxy S line and it's due in early 2011 for announcement.

Sounds reasonable, I was wondering if it's samsung advertising our a mock up of what might come next.
People around here are so argumentative over things where they have no facts. Also I don't get what people expect of a phone, I find battery life between meets expectations to excellent depending on what rom and modem I'm running.
And where did the notion that amoled displays hog power come from? that's the opposite of true, I don't know what the droid x is like but go buy an evo and check the battery life, it's far from good.
I'm excited about the nexus s and hope the rom and kernel port to the captivate, I just wonder if the modem will be a problem, I'm guessing it will be hsupa+ (4g) and wonder if the hardware is the same in that area and if the modem file will support the att 3g bands, or will a froyo captivate modem.bin work in gingerbread? I'll have to wait and see. As for my next phone I'll wait for a dual core device.

Not trying to point out that the Captivate lags behind genius. This is for Captivate owners deciding between getting an Infuse now or waiting for an Attain. Captivate is only there for reference.

Unless they had a lot of money, I don't see why any reasonable person would upgrade to an Infuse. Not saying your chart is worthless, but it's probably better-suited in other places, where people don't usually understand what the differences mean in the "techno-talk**".

I beg to differ. I'm sure someone will find it useful.
I can certainly see people upgrading to the Infuse if they have an upgrade available and really want a 4.5 inch screen, can't live with the Yamaha audio chip in the Attain, or just don't feel like waiting for the Attain. Hell, there are tons of previous Captivate owners already in the Infuse section.
OR, maybe someone is pondering the Infuse, but after seeing this chart they will decide to wait for the Attain, or decide not to. Whatever.
If you came here to bash my post, there's no need really. I'm not closing it for you and I don't really give a crap if you don't find it useful. Others might.

Yeah, Attain looks like it will be exactly like the SGS2 other than the button layout and possible addition of NFC.
The numbers are certainly interesting, but even without them, it was pretty clear that the attain is by far the better choice. The only issue is how long do we have to wait.
I will use my wife's upgrade to get the attain for myself, and pass my captivate to her, as long as I can get her to wait that long. She's really wants to upgrade now. I've heard suggestions/rumors of July 24 for some of the sgsII US release dates. Don't think that was specific to the attain, though. I wonder if anyone has heard anything more difinitive or has better info?
Things I found interesting were that the Attain's GPU will be no better than the Captivate's and the audio quality will actually be worse, but that's really just a testament to how mind blowingly good those parts were when the Captivate originally came out.

I think those late July estimates are purely based on US Galaxy S releases last year. No one knows for sure. Could be late July, or it could be September for all we know .
I didn't realize how badly the Infuse is bested by the SGS II.
I would be fine if at&t waited for the launch of their LTE network so they could put an LTE radio in the attain.

I think I would rather have a little slower speed, much wider coverage, and much better battery life with HSPA+. Plus if AT&T waits that long the Attain won't be nearly as ground breaking. The SGS2 will be old news by then.
I think wait for the attain
I really like the infuse but I like the fact that the attain has gingerbread and the tw4 interface
no harm in the post not sure why people get so uptight....that said rather than trying to decide between the SGSII and the infuse most of the people here are more likely trying to decided whether to pick up the SGSII or hold out for the Prime or the Holiday.

Well, even though it has it critics, and I do go through periods of using AOSP (and prob will on the S once it's available and stable) I still think Sense is the best custom UI on Android. Simple really, SGS3 can't match that element
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
Supposedly its going to have a 1080p screen, to me this is a bad thing.
1) I bet it is bigger than the ONE S and I wasn't quite happy with the size of the ONE X
2) It takes more horse power to run it, so its processor and graphics may be higher but side by side performance will probably be similar due to it having to push more pixels about the place. Also.. 1080p.. on a phone... What's the F'in point??
First i'm 100% sure that Galaxy S III won't have 2gb of ram neither 1080p screen. Its a next generation and since theres obvious settlement betwen manufacturers you can expect same specs as One X. And i'm also pretty sure that it won't have SD card, every manufacturer stops using them, why should they use them, about removable battery i'm not sure, if new galaxy is gonna be thinner then i guess it will have non removable battery.
I think the S3 will have 4.7 screen, so its big, also display will be as good as X. About other specs - I suspect quad core processor, some good graphic component, rumors about 12mp camera.
But anyway, there are only rumors atm, and Im not fan of S2, so I will go for One S as soon as it avaible here

kinda yes, I really like GS2 and SAMOLED Plus is great. But we still don't know if GS3 will be SAMOLED HD or SAMOLED HD Plus. It's most likely be the same size as One X, packing same or better CPU, probably same or better quality camera, and most likely missing things like notification light and noise canceling mic.

Same boat as @tf442. I have a "first month out" Vibrant and GPS has been abysmal from the get-go. I have flashed at least a dozen ROMS (probably more)from Bionix, Trigger all the way to ICS 4.0.4 and they vary, but still no where near other manufacturers GPS. I will not give $$$ to Samsung since they went on the pine in acknowledging any issues with GPS. That, and quit with FROYO. Not good for a top-end phone at the time.
I am eligible for upgrade now, but I don't think I am going to. I might wait out until mid to end-year to upgrade. I am pretty satisfied with my G2 still. Everyone swears it's a great backup phone, but I like it as my main phone all the same.

That won't happen.
I am switching to Sprint for fincial reasons and was going to get the Galaxy S II and then I found out Sprint was going to get 4G LTE so I waited. Then I was going to get the Nexus with 4G LTE but then again I found out that the HTC EVO is coming out so I waited. Now I am finding out that the Galaxy S III is coming out May/June and so I wait. I know this sounds retarded but I really think I can wait for the Amazing Galaxy S III because I believe in my heart that is a phone you can buy for longer than 5 minutes and not feel like crap right afterwards.
I am really going to miss the amazing applications to root the Nexus but do you think the Galaxy S III will have easy applications as well. [The Sprint model that is]
Also how is the voice quality between the two the Nexus and the S II/III? You can also chime in on the EVO if you want.
Main questions is seems like Sprint ‘s only major good phone atm is the Galaxy S II and they have had that for a while so don’t you think they will be in line for sure to get the Galaxy S III? Or do you think I should just get the Nexus or EVO and shut up?
I really want the Galaxy S III though on Sprint! I am getting on a family plan that will be cheaper!
Bump ...
I'd be surprised if they didn't get it. They've had both the Galaxy S and the S2, the Galaxy and Evo series is what I personally think really drives Sprint sales. I'm sure the Galaxy S3 will be rooted before it's even officially released The exynos chipset is open source so development for it should be very nice, just as it has been for the S2. I haven't had the Evo, just the S2, so my comment may be one sided; but the quality on the phone is fine, I've never had an issue with how loud the speaker is when making a call, or clarity for that matter. But I think clarity has more to do with the carrier than the phone itself. But in all seriousness, just wait. I know it might be a while. There's probably going to be times when you look at your phone and just want to go in and upgrade, but it's better to wait than to have a nexus/evo for three months and then watch everyone else buy the S3. The satisfaction of waiting will pay off
Remains to be seen, but given the past it could be Fall of this year. Only say that because they were months apart before and we don't even have a release date, let alone an official unveiling.

Yes I am definitely going to wait. I believe the phone is already out in the UK or will be in May. I think you can even order it on Amazon in another country. I am pretty confident that Sprint will carry the phone.

Will the Galaxy S III have a removeable battery? If it does not would that be a problem when modding? You know when you need to pull out battery for a hard reset?

Any Updates? Will Galaxy S III have the Quad Core Processor?
Hey im in the same boat except I have been able to upgrade for almost a year and a half. I have the old HTC Hero was going to get the SII but was broke by then and waited for the Galaxy Nexus. Now finally the SIII is coming out but I cant wait till october thats a long wait the only other phone id get is the Galaxy Nexus for the LTE. The Evo 4G LTE is a joke HTC has been sending out crappy phones lately I would suggest you wait for the SIII or LG Viper
So you think the Galaxy S III will not be out till October? I have been reading rumors for around June/July.

"Already in production, the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May,” - Samsung April 26th

The original Evo 4G, I had, and I have the Sprint S2 right now. In terms of development, the original Evo had the biggest, most development community ever. It was definitely the biggest of any CDMA phone, and it even rivaled a lot of GSM phone dev communities. For a while, when XDA announced which phones had the most active communities, the HTC Evo was #1 or #2.
HTC phones, at least before they had this "HTC Bootloader Unlock" garbage, had the most diverse ROMs with completely new features added. For example Myn, who's probably the most famous Evo/Evo 3D dev added notification bar toggles, from scratch. Something that was exclusive to Samsung phones. He didn't port them, he made them. He created a roaming menu in his ROMs. He ported ROMs from GSM HTC phones like the Desire HD and Desire Z to the Evo. It was awesome, seriously.
Samsung phones (or at least the CDMA ones) tend to pretty much have ROMs that are all the same at the core, but some have slightly different features/tweaks. I'm a little disappointed, coming from HTC phones (Evo, Evo 3D, even though the Evo 3D didn't live up to the hype), but the raw power of the S2 makes up for it. Some ROMs come ICS themed which is nice, but within Android itself is the potential to throw widgets/launchers/themes around so it's not really anything special.
Personally, for diversity in ROMs I say HTC phones, however, Samsung allows you to root your phone out of the box. If you hold volume down and power when turning on the phone, it gives you a warning and then takes you to the bootloader. There is no bootloader lock, which I love. For raw power, I say Samsung for sure. Also, HTC phones feel more sold, Samsung phones are usually very plasticky but durable and really fast.
Sorry, I know my comment is all over the place. I'm typing this at 2:34 AM.

That was true for a while, however now that they lock the bootloaders pretty tight, and use closed source hardware, they are pretty much just limited to small variations of stock roms.
Take for example the Evo 3D community, it sucks for the most part.

I'm aware. I had a 3D. It didn't suck in the beginning, when all phones came with 1.4 hboot (which I had before I sold mine), but eventually development plateaued and all ROMs were basically the same, save for some tweaks or theme differences. Like you said though, HTC really messed up with the bootloader thing.
So is the Samsung Galaxy S's still have open source bootloaders? Or are any of them locked? Will I be probably safe with the Sprint Galaxy S III?

The Galaxy S was never locked down, but Samsung never openly said, "here, hack our phones". The SII (including US variants), when you boot them up while holding volume up, you get this screen:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
After that, you get a screen that just lists the hardware variant and tells you if you're on official firmware or not. It also keeps track of the number of times you flash the device from the computer using a program called ODIN, which is used for flashing kernels, ROMs, and bootloaders (when your device is stock or if it's soft-bricked). After you flash, say, ClockworkMod Recovery, you can flash from there and it won't up the counter. You can also buy a little USB jig from Amazon or eBay that wipes the counter.
All in all, Samsung has been very open; they sent the CyanogenMod team a bunch of Galaxy S IIs when it first came out so they could port over CM7. It'll still void your warranty obviously, but it's not something they look down on, like HTC nowadays (which is a damn shame because HTC was great with developers). It doesn't look like the GSIII will be locked down either.

Samsung actually said that they won't lock their bootloaders unless google asked them to. Something tells me google won't be doing that anytime soon.
So what do you guys think? The Galaxy S III the best choice for me for my next cell phone? With Sprint that is. I shouldn't have to wait to long huh?
I do not want to go with the HTC Evo 4G LTE because of the root problems, the LG Viper I am sure is garbage, Galaxy S II is no comparison to the Galaxy S III, and the Nexus is coming up on a year old phone [Even though I love the support root apps they have]. I believe it should be an easy decision.

Tmonews is reporting the ICS updates in the near future. The only devices mentioned are GS2, Amaze, and Sensation. I was pretty sure we weren't getting it before but now I am almost positive that we are not. Perhaps if the O2x gets it then we can port it over.
I am waiting to see when will the Galxy Note or Galaxy S3 come to T-mobile. If the date is too far away(We are always that last to get anything) then I am getting a $399 Galaxy Nexus.

Yeah I agree. We aren't gonna see an official ICS update. This phone caused way too many problems for T-mobile/LG. If we were to get an update it should've been before the update for the SGS2 since the G2x came out before that phone.

Although, from that site that you posted look at the very left of the picture. It says G2x with the letters "ch" at the end of a word below it. Maybe there is some hope after all!
More like
Gingerbread Patch
Or it could have been an update for the mytouch line.

Just wait it see guys. So many of these similar threads are being made, it's just a waste of time right now.
Just enjoy GB. TMO released a good GB ROM and CM7 is still pretty awesome for this phone. If ICS comes then cool, if not then just be content or move on to something else.
Look at the picture in the link from the OP
On the left hand side, it says G2X in red font. Below it you can make out the letters "ch" at the end of the word. So maybe that means that the G2X Ice Cream SandwiCH update is overdue????

hahahaahhaha. Agreed. And for the people so upset about not having ICS, I got some news. This site is loaded with ICS roms. Download, Flash, and enjoy.
We really don't need the Rom.
We really need the driver.

Official ICS =/= third party ICS

Ok, so since everyone wants to sit here and bash. Lets me burst everyones "official ICS" dreams. Its not gonna happen. It'll most likely never happen. How do I know this? I sell phones. If T-mobile had plans for it, why would they move forward in production of newer model phones? Oh, and the reason HTC sensation is getting it is because they make money on it. The G2x is falling behind in the market where everyone wants the Galaxy series (say hello to the galaxy blaze and the soon GS3) or HTC. If no one's been paying attention(and I doubt anyone does) HTC, G series, Samsung, and apple are the sellers. Not Lg, not pantect, not any company thats been a waste of funds for the last 2 decades of cell phones. But again, you know, ROMS aren't official, but they're only thing your G2x will get ICS with. So, yeah. Go cry in a corner now that you know LG hates you.

As long as the O2X gets an official ICS update from LG, then we'll be fine.
Interesting post from the O2X thread, regarding ICS update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426191
Maybe an incompetent LG representative (since the Wind "O2X" is a G2X without the Tmobile logo) or on the contrary.
