What? A phone that is over a year old lags behind the features of phones just coming out? Earth-shattering observation there, Sherlock.

Not trying to point out that the Captivate lags behind genius. This is for Captivate owners deciding between getting an Infuse now or waiting for an Attain. Captivate is only there for reference.

Unless they had a lot of money, I don't see why any reasonable person would upgrade to an Infuse. Not saying your chart is worthless, but it's probably better-suited in other places, where people don't usually understand what the differences mean in the "techno-talk**".
**Yes, this is the vernacular regular folks actually use

I beg to differ. I'm sure someone will find it useful.
I can certainly see people upgrading to the Infuse if they have an upgrade available and really want a 4.5 inch screen, can't live with the Yamaha audio chip in the Attain, or just don't feel like waiting for the Attain. Hell, there are tons of previous Captivate owners already in the Infuse section.
OR, maybe someone is pondering the Infuse, but after seeing this chart they will decide to wait for the Attain, or decide not to. Whatever.
If you came here to bash my post, there's no need really. I'm not closing it for you and I don't really give a crap if you don't find it useful. Others might.

It is a nice simple reference to see the differences between the phones. I don't get to upgrade for another year almost, but It's nice to have things organized and know what's to be expected in the future. Thanks for this.

Thanks!
I wish there was a chart for phones a little over a year away for people who go the Captivate when it first came out and don't want to pay extra.

I might not be useful for me but my wife is definitely due for an upgrade. She is still sitting on an iPhone 3g and eyeballing my captivate all the time. The only thing missing would be what the next Gen iPhone is going to be.

Where do you get your attain data? I haven't seen any info in the blogosphere. Are you just basing it on the sgs2?

Yeah, Attain looks like it will be exactly like the SGS2 other than the button layout and possible addition of NFC.

The numbers are certainly interesting, but even without them, it was pretty clear that the attain is by far the better choice. The only issue is how long do we have to wait.
I will use my wife's upgrade to get the attain for myself, and pass my captivate to her, as long as I can get her to wait that long. She's really wants to upgrade now. I've heard suggestions/rumors of July 24 for some of the sgsII US release dates. Don't think that was specific to the attain, though. I wonder if anyone has heard anything more difinitive or has better info?

Things I found interesting were that the Attain's GPU will be no better than the Captivate's and the audio quality will actually be worse, but that's really just a testament to how mind blowingly good those parts were when the Captivate originally came out.

I think those late July estimates are purely based on US Galaxy S releases last year. No one knows for sure. Could be late July, or it could be September for all we know .

I didn't realize how badly the Infuse is bested by the SGS II.

I would be fine if at&t waited for the launch of their LTE network so they could put an LTE radio in the attain.

I think I would rather have a little slower speed, much wider coverage, and much better battery life with HSPA+. Plus if AT&T waits that long the Attain won't be nearly as ground breaking. The SGS2 will be old news by then.

I think wait for the attain
I really like the infuse but I like the fact that the attain has gingerbread and the tw4 interface

no harm in the post not sure why people get so uptight....that said rather than trying to decide between the SGSII and the infuse most of the people here are more likely trying to decided whether to pick up the SGSII or hold out for the Prime or the Holiday.

It went through the fcc, has the name NEXUS S (Nexus + Galaxy S) google on the back and 2.3 (Gingerbread) vanilla in the U.I. picture.
It's UNDENIABLE this is the NEXT Galaxy S/Nexus
Woot porting android 2.3 to our devices + first to get updates as nexus phone
This news / confirmation of rumors is the best news for all SGS phones since the SGS line was released! This all but guarantee's we will get Honeycomb when it comes out and it should be ported quickly!

I totally agree with you. It looks pretty fugly compared to the cap. I was actually thinking that it could have been pretty sexy if they had taken the Omnia 7 style chasis and android-fied it and thrown in some more metal instead of cheap feeling plastic.

This will be awesome as long as Samsung doesn't do the same douchebaggery they've made themselves known for as far as updates and support. Once this drops I'll probably buy this and ditch my Cappy.

I hope it's the same hardware and we'll see a port, I'm not about to but another super phone, although the ffc and presumably hsupa and possibly hspa+ do make it tempting even if it's the same hardware.
If it's new hardware, I'll be mad I bought the captivate.

The hardware should be relatively similar, probably most similar to the Epic 4g. I base this on the fact that it was originally supposed to be out Nov 14 (I forgot where I read this, androidandme.com maybe?), and that the model number is I9020. I highly doubt they put some next-gen hardware in it that would make it impossible to port the OS to our captivates.
I hope it comes with worth while hardware improvements if its only standard Galaxy S then there is no point upgrading if you already have Galaxy S variant..
how does this mean we are going to be the first ones to get gingerbread / comb? (not trying to be a ****, can't convey tone in type, this is a genuine question) I understand a port might be SLIGHTLY easier, but what if it has a lot of different hardware? (as someone who is not really familiar with phone development, I am genuinely curious) and I really don't think that the release of this will mean that samsung will continue to support its other phones (c'mon people, its sammy). I think Ill certainly buy one, WOOT for updates from google!

It ties in with it being easier to port to our phones, and I highly doubt it'll carry the new 1.2ghz processor.. considering that's slated for the new flagship samsung
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/exclusive-samsung-flagship-phone-with-gingerbread-and-huge-di/
come to think of it, this is samsung's dream phone, they get to utilize all their sexified hardware, and not have to give a crap about software updates since that would (presumably) be handled by google. I think it was meant to be <3 and also WHY THE HELL DOES T-MOBILE GET ALL OF THE DAMN GOOGLE EXPERIENCE PHONES!? (best buy's leaked info suggests it will be through t-mobile, heres to hoping that it carries the at&t bands like the vibrant does)

Well, the assumption was that it wouldn't have a lot of hardware differences (same cpu, gpu, modem, etc.), meaning that porting the rom over to work on the captivate would be a lot easier than something with next-gen hardware, which would necessitate writing custom drivers and whatnot.
Looks like my assumption is turning out to be false though. Sorry to wreck everyone's Friday afternoon with this, but check this article out:

I Might Bite the Apple Tomorrow

Why i might get an iPhone, it is a lot to read. But please do.
Ive had multiple phones within the past 2 years and the Captivate has treated me well. But I have grown old of the constant reflashing and updating. It all started with my first unlocked phone, the Xpressmusic 5800, then came the N97. I loved the N97 and its design but once again nokia failed and put a horrible processor in their flagship. Also symbian got too clunky for me and was unbearable. then came The Bold 9700 which was great for the first week but within 2 weeks i had moved back to the N97. A week later i got the Touch Pro 2 and fell in love with the keyboard but wasn't fond of the bulkiness. I flashed different roms and it was great but once again it was just way too thick. the Xperia X2 was next of my many phones. the physical keys, optical track pad, and perfect keyboard was one of the best i have ever used. After many months of waiting for a HSPL it never came. the Design was perfect but it was just too slow for my preference.
Then came the Captivate. Ive had this phone for nearly a year which is a feat for me. i got it for 450 the first week it was out and fell is love with the Amoled Screen. The first thing i plashed was bugless beast which got rid of bloatware and allowed me to install non market apps. went through different roms and though i love android its the same old trying to make it better with different roms. here i am using MIUI losing the theming which is fairly close to the iphone
Keep in mind i have a first gen touch and i use it daily in the car, my itouch has been the oldest peice of tech i have used and still works. i never got sick of the itouch and still use it.
My contract has been up a few months after i got the captivate and ive been waiting for something to replace the captivate. i always admired the iphone 4 design but was waiting for maybe the new iphone 5. Just a few days ago they released that the iphone 4 WHITE was going to be released soon, which leads me to believe that the iphone 5 isnt going to be released this year.
I have used every mobile OS and IOS is the only os that i havnt gotten sick of yet.

If you're going to get an iphone, wait until the next one comes out. It has some ground-breaking additions, like being able to hold it without worrying about signal loss.

That's a shame man. The white iPhone is pretty (I'd personally wait for the iPhone 5) but with the way I use my cappy I don't think I could do it. Drag and drop music and videos is something the iPhone will never do, and I use my captivate the most for those two things. On the flipside, you can be more social with an iPhone and it's FaceTime and the fact everyone has one and that sorta thing. Personally, I'm sticking with the cappy, at least until iPhone 6 or Galaxy s3
I honestly would never trade my cappy for an iphone.
I can barely live with the same rom and launcher for more than a few weeks, imagine having an uncustomizable phone.
Sent from my Cappy using kickass FireFly 2.9, oc/uv Onix 2.0.5 and xda premium app.
I have a captivate, and well, love the way I can customize it to suit me. I tried using an iphone 4 for a couple days, but couldn't stick for more than a few hours. I don't say iphone 4 is bad, but its the feeling of "freedom" that I feel with captivate that I can't seem to let go of it. I came to Captivate after using 3GS for about an year.
Anyways, in the end, its all ur personal decision to go from a free land to alcazar prison. All I can say is all the best in ur move. But don't expect to get too far in the waters since all that can be done is jailbreak.
Since u waited this long, why not wait till June? Its just about a month from now, and if there is a new model then u'd be sitting holding ur head.
judging by his history, he doesnt research before he buys, just buys whats cool. He'll get it play with it for a month then come back to the captivate and unlock it for his new contract he'll pick up with the icrap....
when he could just unlock it now and become a monthly customer. no contract! with a phone without limitations... except ff camera.

Leaving the Thunderbolt? Chime in and say bye.....

Looks like with Razr, Nexus, and Rezound coming out its bound to cut down traffic in the Thunderbolt forum. i already decided 'hell no' on the RAZR....
going back & forth with the nexus/rezound.. spec-wise i like the rezound more, but i like the screen size of the nexus....
basically though, i am going to wait until both phones are here & see how things go with them first. so i might end up staying with the ol' TB a bit longer.
I'm stuck between the razr and nexus. I gotta sell my tbolt first otherwise I'm sticking with it

I wont leave until my one year upgrade is up. And I may wait further if something really good is coming out soon.
gonna wait for quad-core phones, they are round the corner anyways
Hopefully they start to show up sometime in Q1 2012.
until then I keep my TB
Agreed. Dual core is only an incremental upgrade. I've compared my TBolt to an S2 and its not too different. I'm not even overclocked.
As long as CM9 is supported here, I'm not jumping anytime soon.

I'm with you man, very solid device and with MIUI available now I see no need to upgrade. A lot of developers are creating some amazing work for the bolt! New nexus is cool and I had the first one and loved it but I'm waiting too.
My wife is upgrading this month either the Razr or the Rezound. I am due for an upgrade in January. I am definately waiting to see the Nexus first. If it is $500, definately selling TB to buy Nexus off contract, just to save upgrade to quad core, which I think won't happen until the summer of 2012.

whenever quad-core is released, I have a feeling its going to be one of those last minute "surprise!.. we're releasing it next week!" sort of deal.
as for the TB, I've got someone offering me $300 for it(although with 9 cases & 5 batteries)... that's why I'm considering an upgrade(+ I have an upgrade available right now).
well I got my thunderbolt end of march so I got awhile. still very satisfied with my thunderbolt.
There's really no need to. I just got my TB in June and I'm very happy with it. Plus as other people have said I also won't be thinking of an upgrade until the quadcores come out. Yeah, I will have to try to locate a non crappy "kickstand case" for any future phones....I use that thing constantly. Funny that it's about the one unique feature the tbolt has left in the verizon lineup, heh.

Yeah I dont understand how a kickstand isnt already standard on every phone now developed. At least every new HTC phone. I use it every single day watching netflix vids on my lunch break.
I really want a nexus just for the increased screen space and AMOLED screen. I'm growing tired of the poor battery life with the TB and the thickness of it. But unless I can find a convenient way to prop up the nexus, or to get a reasonable sale on my TB, looks like she'll be with me for quite some time.

If SGS3 came to TMobile, how would you support your argument?

I'm waiting to see what Samsung has to offer, I'm not due for a new phone until June anyway.

Exactly the same situation here. If Samsungs new device sucks then its definately gotta be the S. Just hoping that the Galaxy's screen isnt as big as the One X's one. It's just too much... :what:

Well, even though it has it critics, and I do go through periods of using AOSP (and prob will on the S once it's available and stable) I still think Sense is the best custom UI on Android. Simple really, SGS3 can't match that element

Supposedly its going to have a 1080p screen, to me this is a bad thing.
1) I bet it is bigger than the ONE S and I wasn't quite happy with the size of the ONE X
2) It takes more horse power to run it, so its processor and graphics may be higher but side by side performance will probably be similar due to it having to push more pixels about the place. Also.. 1080p.. on a phone... What's the F'in point??
First i'm 100% sure that Galaxy S III won't have 2gb of ram neither 1080p screen. Its a next generation and since theres obvious settlement betwen manufacturers you can expect same specs as One X. And i'm also pretty sure that it won't have SD card, every manufacturer stops using them, why should they use them, about removable battery i'm not sure, if new galaxy is gonna be thinner then i guess it will have non removable battery.
I think the S3 will have 4.7 screen, so its big, also display will be as good as X. About other specs - I suspect quad core processor, some good graphic component, rumors about 12mp camera.
But anyway, there are only rumors atm, and Im not fan of S2, so I will go for One S as soon as it avaible here

but on 3rd may we might get some new infos (... no rumours)
however a display bigger than 4,6" is much to big for my taste...
if thats going to happen, i probably will get myself a ONE S
If it takes T-mobile US as long as it did to get the Galaxy S 2....i'm not waiting.
But then again, i don't want to wait. Im tired of Samsung's plastic devices, ugly touch wiz, and international Galaxy S3 will be different from the US Galaxy S3, which will hinder dev support.
Im sure the one s will have great dev support like the sensation. Every one S around the world will be the exact same and will run the same roms.
The only thing i was hating about htc phones was the bad slcd screen, so happy theres amoled now, and i dont care if its pentile.

There is a rumor tht the one x is coming to Tmo with stock ics. I know the gs3 will be beast but I hate touchwiz and love sense. I had a mt4gs and now have a sg2 and touchwiz kills it. There is no stock ics that's working well, and no sense .: /. I want the One s or the One x one tmobile, but would get the gs3 if there is a stock ics rom

Samsung gps
I am ready to upgrade from my Vibrant. I like my Samsung but the GPS is crap. I'm not sure I would trust a Samsung gps. I keep waiting for the gps to run me over a cliff. Is any Samsung gps as good as HTC?
nothing compares to HTC GPS. I can get a lock in under 15 seconds. no tweaks.
i never lose the satellite. Its found me home many times
kinda yes, I really like GS2 and SAMOLED Plus is great. But we still don't know if GS3 will be SAMOLED HD or SAMOLED HD Plus. It's most likely be the same size as One X, packing same or better CPU, probably same or better quality camera, and most likely missing things like notification light and noise canceling mic.
Already got one s and prefer HTC build

Same boat as @tf442. I have a "first month out" Vibrant and GPS has been abysmal from the get-go. I have flashed at least a dozen ROMS (probably more)from Bionix, Trigger all the way to ICS 4.0.4 and they vary, but still no where near other manufacturers GPS. I will not give $$$ to Samsung since they went on the pine in acknowledging any issues with GPS. That, and quit with FROYO. Not good for a top-end phone at the time.
I am eligible for upgrade now, but I don't think I am going to. I might wait out until mid to end-year to upgrade. I am pretty satisfied with my G2 still. Everyone swears it's a great backup phone, but I like it as my main phone all the same.

That won't happen.

I am 99.9% we are not getting Official ICS for G2x

Tmonews is reporting the ICS updates in the near future. The only devices mentioned are GS2, Amaze, and Sensation. I was pretty sure we weren't getting it before but now I am almost positive that we are not. Perhaps if the O2x gets it then we can port it over.
I am waiting to see when will the Galxy Note or Galaxy S3 come to T-mobile. If the date is too far away(We are always that last to get anything) then I am getting a $399 Galaxy Nexus.

Yeah I agree. We aren't gonna see an official ICS update. This phone caused way too many problems for T-mobile/LG. If we were to get an update it should've been before the update for the SGS2 since the G2x came out before that phone.

Although, from that site that you posted look at the very left of the picture. It says G2x with the letters "ch" at the end of a word below it. Maybe there is some hope after all!
More like
Gingerbread Patch
Or it could have been an update for the mytouch line.

Just wait it see guys. So many of these similar threads are being made, it's just a waste of time right now.
Just enjoy GB. TMO released a good GB ROM and CM7 is still pretty awesome for this phone. If ICS comes then cool, if not then just be content or move on to something else.
Look at the picture in the link from the OP
On the left hand side, it says G2X in red font. Below it you can make out the letters "ch" at the end of the word. So maybe that means that the G2X Ice Cream SandwiCH update is overdue????

hahahaahhaha. Agreed. And for the people so upset about not having ICS, I got some news. This site is loaded with ICS roms. Download, Flash, and enjoy.
We really don't need the Rom.
We really need the driver.

Official ICS =/= third party ICS

Ok, so since everyone wants to sit here and bash. Lets me burst everyones "official ICS" dreams. Its not gonna happen. It'll most likely never happen. How do I know this? I sell phones. If T-mobile had plans for it, why would they move forward in production of newer model phones? Oh, and the reason HTC sensation is getting it is because they make money on it. The G2x is falling behind in the market where everyone wants the Galaxy series (say hello to the galaxy blaze and the soon GS3) or HTC. If no one's been paying attention(and I doubt anyone does) HTC, G series, Samsung, and apple are the sellers. Not Lg, not pantect, not any company thats been a waste of funds for the last 2 decades of cell phones. But again, you know, ROMS aren't official, but they're only thing your G2x will get ICS with. So, yeah. Go cry in a corner now that you know LG hates you.

Oh thanks a lot for the explanation captain obvious, hence the topic title being "I am 99.9% sure we are not getting official ICS."

As long as the O2X gets an official ICS update from LG, then we'll be fine.
Interesting post from the O2X thread, regarding ICS update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426191
Maybe an incompetent LG representative (since the Wind "O2X" is a G2X without the Tmobile logo) or on the contrary.
