[GUIDE] How to get v21y over the air on G2x - T-Mobile LG G2x

UPDATE 6-15-2012: i just wanted to update the beginning of this post to make it a little clearer, the original text is below
to get the v21y base band on your phone over the air, you have to go back to stock
to do this you need a stock rom, either your own backup or the one from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644 (the first and second link is a stock 2.3.3 nandroid which is a zip you extract on your pc and run flash.bat from inside that folder)
if you need the drivers, download the third link.
follow the steps in that thread, it works
if you have your own stock nandroid, just boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and restore it (after you backup whats on your phone now)
then reboot your phone
after restoring either your stock nandroid or the one from the post above, shut your phone off and remove the battery and use NVFlash to restore the stock recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
reboot your phone
now that you have your phone like it was from the beginning you can go to System Settings/About Phone and click on Software Update. this should pull down the updated Gingerbread version 2.3.4 and the new baseband v21y. IT WILL OVERWRITE YOUR PHONE AND WILL BE PLAIN STOCK
it takes a few minutes so be patient
once it is done and it rebooted your phone you will have to put ClockworkMod Recovery back on it using NVFlash. then you can flash other roms to your phone
please keep in mind that there is a bluetooth issue with both GB and ICS roms on this baseband and that only a few roms actually support v21y. Owain has written an update file that you flash to get support on any rom with v21y, supposedly it does work on any rom (GB or ICS) but i have not tested it, so read up and test if you want.
as of CM7 RC3 all CM7 builds support v21y
please thank the owners of the threads linked above, their methods worked flawlessly for me and i hope they work for you as well. this was a very easy way for me to get the new baseband. good luck!
original post------------------------------------------------------------------------
i was having a heck of a time trying to get the new baseband installed on my phone. i had all the stuff downloaded and all the instructions ready, had the KDZ file, the LG tool, everything...but i could not get anything to work
so what did work?
well using CWM Recovery i restored my stock backup i had made when i first got the phone (best to save this off the phone as well in a safe place) and then using NVFlash i put the stock recovery back on it
once that was done and i was booted back into stock you can go into the About Phone and choose Software Update (or whatever its called) and check for an update. it found one and proceeded to download a 30meg file. asked if i wanted to apply the update, installed it, and rebooted into a nice shiny new 2.3.4 GB setup with v21y and the new baseband installed!
the CM7 nightly build (June 3) is working great. getting ready to try a couple of others (Buru, EB, Genesis (although i was having a problem there, see that thread))
so its only been one day on it but so far calls are good, gps lock is fast, overall loving my phone even more than before!!

Great that the OTA worked for you, I left my phone stock the whole week it was mentioned about sending it and I checked the software update and it always told me the software update check failed/timed out lol
Sent from my LG-P999

I am extremely pleased with the update.
I had been running a rooted stock ROM + CWM Recovery. I had been dismissing the update notice for weeks now. Finally, earlier this week I flashed back the stock recovery and let the OTA proceed.
Current uptime: 67:59:06
I haven't gone a full day without either a random reboot or a sleep of death in a LONG time.

Did mine the other way not over the air. Then did the sound update. Also running CM7 and all has been fine.

What is the sound update? I thought it was included in the new baseband and is it in the ota update? Thanks

Can you test if the 6.3.12 nightly has working in call bluetooth?

updated the first post

Reverted back to stock this morning and installed the OTA update...now i'm back on cm7 with no issues. Great suggestion on an easy way to get the March baseband.
Thanks!

you are on stock rom AND stock recovery? data connections good otherwise?

A little clarification, if I may...
Could I just flash the stock 2.3.3 nandroid from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048274 to bring myself back to "stock" then, using NVFlash that's already on my computer from when I first rooted my phone, flash it back to stock recovery? After that, try the OTA to get myself to 2.3.4 or, if that doesn't work, use the LG Updater tool? Then just root my phone again and go back to enjoying custom ROMs?
Seems like it would be easier and one step less if I get the nandroid from that thread rather than following the link in the OP and having to extract something on my computer.

yes that will work as well and whether you get a stock rom from the link i posted or the one you posted makes no difference this was just how i did it

Hey, thanks! I've been wanting to update my BB ever since it became compatible with the new ROMs, just haven't been able to set aside the time to be able to do that. Just wanted to make sure I had it right before I attempted.
Your steps sounded easy and straight forward; it just never hurts makes sure!
Thanks again, bro.

you're welcome
there is a bluetooth issue with all roms and the new BB so if you use BT you might want to stick with the stock 2.3.4 that you will get with the upgrade. lots of devs are working on that issue so hopefully it wont be long

suggestions?
I followed the instructions in the first post, and now am back on the stock rom (21e, july 15 2011). However, when I go to try the software update, I get the following message: "current version is the latest version." Is there another way to get the new 21y baseband?

I think he means the stock kernel? Watch the video and yes your kernel goes to stock.

I did the update from the LG updater but didn't like it. I just wanted to go back to Froyo with the old baseband so I can get the OTA update. I know the updates were the same, it is just person preference.
nvm...............
back to stock
yes i would also like to get rid of my garbage xboarders rooted LG ota 2.3.3 rom and start with a clean slate. i want to run the update either OTA or direct from LG updater, but I can't with the July 15 baseband. i'm having a lot of problems - i have to reboot phone to switch from wifi to data or vice-versa, echo sound through headphones, DTS makes music sound distorted and echo-ie, GPS takes FOREVER to lock on location (i even tried doing the hidden menu fixes), and a lot of times when I turn my phone it won't find a signal so i have to reboot (and i live in downtown portland, or), and tons of apps are just showing white boxes for icons, the whole thing is laggy as hell, etc. etc etc.. ever since i've had new baseband i've had tons of problems, regardless of what ROM i have installed. i've tried different kernels too.. so must be baseband right? i hope someone can help us out soon!

G2X and July Baseband

I have a G2x and my Baseband is Mar27 2011 I have read on here that the July15 2011 baseband might clear up issues and make the phone work better is this true?
I am also rooted on a 3.3.4 ROM if I updated the baseband can I reroot my G2X?
As far as I know, nobody has uploaded the july baseband. I think the only way to update it would be through the lg tool or ota.
I don't know about one-click rooting, but if you get the baseband through the official update, you can always just flash prerooted gingerbread.
Sorry I wasn't very clear I was talking about going back to stock and then using the lg tool and update to stock 2.3.3 that has the July Baseband. I want to make sure I can reroot back to other roms after I do this and if anyone has done this knows if the July Baseband is better than the March one?
1. 2.3.3
2. Yes, you can reFLASH other roms after updating to the new baseband, and root them.
3. For some, the new baseband has fixed gps issues. Others seem to be having issues with the data signal.
yeah buddy!
i just reverted to stock using the later NAND backup, V21E.zip , then the LG upgrade tool recognized and flashed without errors, tho before I restored to stock it was giving me some errors in very poor english.
Revert to stock -> LG Update -> NVFlash CWM -> CM Nightly = GPS works! FINALLY! I haven't been able to use my GPS on pretty much any rom til this point.
I definitely vote for the go ahead, the new baseband makes a difference for sure!
Fixed thanks and great info so far kiddecks have you noticed any issues with your data signal? the gps is not a feature I will be using a lot my main focus is on reception and data.

Don't forget to remove CWM as part of reverting to stock. You don't want to give the lg tool any chance to brick your phone like its doing for some people.
Thanks for that I will make sure to remember did you update your Baseband heysharon?
Not yet, the ota is either being dodgy or slow to come by, and I can't get the lg tool to install on my computer. Until the ota arrives for my phone, I'm hoping for the off chance that someone will upload the new baseband.
ok thanks for all your help from the sounds of it you also want to try out the new Baseband
Was wondering if anyone was still working on making
a zip file of the July baseband? I'm sure it would be much
Appreciated by many here. Thanks

Do mean clockworkmod recovery? If you want to flash back to stock recovery you can use the one click nvflash tool from the development section. When you're at the step where you choose which version of recovery to flash just choose stock.

[Q] Can't send texts

I just flashed Cyanogen 7.1 on my mesmerize from rooted 2.3.4... when i send a text it says that it has been sent, but the person never gets the text. I can receive texts, and i can send MMS(If i send mms then the person will get the message). I have tried flashing the ee19 radio, that makes the phone go into air plane mode, and there's no way to get it out except for flashing back to stock. i've also installed handcent and go SMS as others have suggested with no success, and i have called *228 to try to fix things, but when i call *228 ti voice says that the phone has been upgraded but the screen says that the phone failed to upgrade... I'm out of ideas other than going back to 2.3.4 root.
Sounds like you need to flash the ee19 radio. Unzip the linked file and Odin the tar file in the pda slot. Should fix it for ya.
http://db.tt/1YqerUvT
Still nothing... i had tried flashing the EE19 radio using odin before, but doing that puts the phone into air plane mode and it won't come out. I tried it again with the file that you linked, with the same results...
That sucks. Only thing I can say is start fresh and try flashing CM7 again. Make sure you get the right build.
I will try... thanks for the help
How new is the phone your having issues with. I had problems with anything other than eh09. Wondering if the pre nightly would work but haven't tried it. Don't they have a version of cm that's fixed for eh09? My device was shipped just last week from insurance due to a theft.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Im thinking that, that may be the case. My phone isn't that new, bought in may 2011, but before trying to flash anything to it, i used the USCC rom thing to flash stock 2.3.4(EH09) onto the phone. Now any time i try to revert to 2.2.1(EE19), the phone automatically sticks in air plane mode and won't come out.
I flashed hienz57 and miui both dependant on eh09 but cm7.1 won't work. Sticks on airplane as soon as I flashed ee19 radio. If u want cm try pre nightly fixed for eh09 radio.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
where do you find a pre nightly of cm7 for the eh09 radio? when i look for it all i can find is the stable release for the mesmerize
Pm me ill find the link for prenightly in the am.

[Q] New Superoneclick 2.2

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Has anybody tried this on UCKK! leak? For me it doesn't work.
I have tried it a bunch of times and could not get it to work. Others have reported that it works with KK1 and other leaks but I have not been able to. I had to use the old method of rooting which involves flashing a root enabling kernel then flashing back to the stock kernel (which I do for HDMI).

Working perfectly for me. Took a while, but yes it does root the new kk1 leak.
Just reinstall unrooted leak and rerooted with Superoneclick 2.2. It takes about 3-5 minutes.
But I haven't bee able to install a modded recovery unless I push a different kernel.
After trying many times I found the right way to root. I also was unable to install modded rrecovery and every time I hav to flash another kernel and then go back to stock
Verison 1.8
whats the difference between this and v 1.8?
This worked for me. I just ran it like normal -- didn't have to do anything special. It looked like it didn't work because with previous ROMs I would get a message stating the root was successful, but didn't get it with this one. I thought it was hung because the window said "not responding" so I force closed it, opened it again and ran it again and it said the phone was already rooted. I looked and found SU was installed. Been working great ever since.

I'm new so may be wrong but don't you need modded recovery for cwm zips? So if you need to push a different [rooted?] kernel what is the point of the new soc since the root stays after pushing rooted kernel, assuming you want a modded recovery?

Stop Waiting for TMO to Update to ICS!

If you are waiting for TMO to Update the Sensation to ICS you should stop waiting and update to ARHD. I am a ARHD user and have been applying each update as it comes down and have had no issues at all. Battery life has improved ten fold and Android 4.0.3 is great.
If you are concerned about the warranty issues with rooting, don't be. You are on the XDA forum, so I will assume that you have at least a basic understanding of how to operate your computer. It is a simple process and you would have to be a complete idiot to screw it up.
Take it from me, switch to ARHD and you will be beyond happy!

Yes, and the update from HTC will be Sense also...so no point in waiting? Getting off base install from TMO did wonders for the speed of my Sensation.
I know some people are concerned about losing Wifi calling, but it seems to work in ARHD and Virtuous ROMs just fine (btw Virtuous does NOT have Sense). I had one minor hiccup with it in an older ARHD version, but its stable now.
I was worried about losing my warranty, but if you follow the S-off/on procedure closely, you can revert your phone back to normal in case you need warranty service!

Yummy what do you mean, the official ICS OTA for T-Mobile US has not been released yet?
Would love to update but the procedure seems extremely convoluted with unknown result. I am now trying to find a Youtube guide or something of this sort.
Im on ARHD right now but i would love to flash a stock ICS...problem is everytime i followed one of the guides out there i ran into a problem. I guess its because the guides are not for Sensation 4G.
Would be really nice if someone can put up a guide on how to flash a stock ICS on Sensation 4G tmo.
Question for you all. My phone is stock. If I do one of these ICS ROMs, will that wipe out all the apps I have installed and their progress? Will it make my phone like brand new?
I'm ASSUMING if I wait for the T-Mobile ICS it will keep all of my apps and their info?
Thank you
Jerry
I got tired of waiting.
I tried AHRD first and it's good. I ran it for about a week playing with sebatian's and faux's kernels. I've been running Elegancia for the last week with Bricked kernel I like it more.
I want to try CM9 when it's fully operational for a pure AOSP experience. I also want to try a Sense 4 ROM, but I understand BT isn't fully functional yet and I need that in the car - and I'm reading bad reports on battery life at this point.

Your data will be wiped and you'll be doing setup like a new phone.
Download Titanium Backup first and backup all your apps/data. You're apps should auto install after you flash the ROM - or you can install them manually. Then you can restore your app data from Titanium and your game progress will be back.
I don't know if waiting for T-mo's update will require the same backup or not. But give that firmware will be updated and a complete OS update, I don't see how your app data would be safe then either.

With a stock OTA update, the update is installed via the stock recovery. The stock recovery makes a backup first before flashing the update. After the update is flashed the stock recovery takes and installs all your apps and other data from the backup it made. This way when you flash the OTA the end user does not loose all their settings, apps, and personal ink saved on their device.
