Android Privacy Article - Android General

I hope this is the correct forum, I understand that it would have been discussed before, but after a search was unable to find what I was looking for.
I worrying stumbed across this article this afternoon and it got me very worried.
http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/android-apps-can-steal-your-photos-too-1068135
Are there infact any known apps that have or are doing this at the moment, this could even be a put off for me buying another android device come October when my contract updates.
What app's are available which could ensure my devices security is as safe as possible?
Thanks - concerned android user.

It says they had a developer make an app specifically just to test it was possible, no app was available that did it so they wanted to verify it could be done.
Iphone has same problem except it can also take your contacts data too so while no android app is known to have utilised the exploit the only way to guarantee safety is use a less hackable os such as wp7 or Blackberry.

Skype 2 video available

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.
http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/06/smile_skype_for_android_with_v.html
Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

Im not familiar with knowing the ins and outs of editing an apk but this might be a start for someone who does
Probably requires GB.... I would think
yep. the official requires gb and in the list of device check. with device check removed, almost all with gingerbread can use it.
man, so much we can't do without gb. This phone should have launched with it.

the only true gripe I have with android is its similarity with linux, fragmented operating system. I mean we buy these $500+ phones and a week later I find some inferior phone doing more than we are, it blows my mind sometimes!!!

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

hey, this is gonna sound like a really dumb question and way off topic but can you tell me how your notified when someone posts. I have always been one to read through forums daily but have never gotten too good at participating, as you might tell as I have been a member for 3 years and have very little posts. I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance
Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?
regards
no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

A question of compatibility

My company is rolling out an app soon, and the software vendor gave us this info (see pic) as requirements. How do I determine what devices this thing should run on based on the info in this pic?
Thanks for any insight. I promised my IT buddy I'd ask here. The end result is that we want to know what devices can run our app.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.
Well judging by the everything there, almost any android device should be able to run it.

Almost any, but the api level listed appears to be for android 2.0 and above so early androids with 1.6 won't run the app.
But anything with gps and a touchscreen that is running at least android 2.0 will run it so that is still most phones and tablets.

See the thing that seems odd, is that it requires a camera. But, the app has nothing to do with anything a camera is used for. Or maybe I'm reading into it too much.
So, when this app is on the android market, will everybody be able to see and download it, even if they don't meet the requirements?
For instance, I tried to download dead trigger on my htc thunderbolt, but it said on google play that my device was incompatible. Would somebody with an older tablet that has no camera (front or rear) have the same thing happen?

If a device does not meet the requirements for an app, it will not show for it on the market (natively). The only other ways would be by using market enabler, build.prop tweaks, or viewing the account's download history (the app may have been installed on a compatible device using that account).

Is Purchase history on the WP site showing all your apps?

I'm noticing a lot today; first Windows LIve error 86000108 and now this.
I went to the Windows Phone site, purchase history and after a few more clicks on the "more", I got :No more results". It just gave me a few of my apps instead of the lot, I can't see apps I bought or downloaded from last year up to March this year. What is going on? Any help?
All mine are there, sorry.

Not even 1 app? Whoa! You got to report this. Microsoft support actually contacted me last week and made me know the apps ate still there just that I can't see them. All was caused by a move up they made with some apps and all will appear as so as I try to download them. You can try this.

Same here.
Same "issue" here. i asked a question on the microsoft site for questions about windowsphone.com and nobody answered. i realised that already a month ago. i had apps from last year till now, and now it show me about 100 last apps. till june this year only! so one complete year is missing. The bad thing is that if somebody want to reinstall his paid apps and dont know the name out of the head thats a problem!
and i think microsoft did that because of to much data on they server. they may be have thought "who needs apps from last year". The problem is Poeple need this apps because we rarely flash or broke our devices so we dont need it often, but when we need them we need also the ones from last year.

When MS is giving away 7-25GB of storage space per user for nothing, I highly doubt MS has storage issues
It'll be a bug, perhaps it is some sort of archiving system that wasn't finished properly, in any sense, flag it with MS and let them deal with it.

Please call Samsung about 4.3 update for google edition S4 and writing to SD card

For everyone with the S4 google edition. As you know the ability of many apps to be able to write to the sd card was busted with the 4.3 update. Just got off the phone with Samsung and explained the situation and they said they have not received any other calls on this and basically nothing will be done until they receive more calls. So please let them know. their number is 1 800 726 7864 Thank you!

If like me you don't want to root no. Some apps that could save to SD card(camera JB+)developers are working on a fix but from what I read today it doesn't sound good. One program that still works is ES File Explorer to move files to SD card. But not the greatest solution. Hopefully Samsung will put out a fix if we make some noise.

Dude, just root the phone, install Busybox and use Foldermount to move apps to the sdcard
These threads are funny. Everyone *****es about Samsung's apps, framework, overlay and customizations so they release a phone that's as AOSP as possible. Then people ***** about not having access to Samsung's customizations. OP, Google's adamantly against external storage which is why Nexus devices don't have it. Be lucky the SGS4 GE supports it at all which is a customization to AOSP in itself. There are two SGS4s - pick the one that works for you. Expecting Samsung to continue to add their own features to a phone intentionally kept as "pure" as possible is a bit nuts and goes against why GE edition phones exist in the first place. The post above this one is the answer to your problem. Not spamming Samsung.

Uhhh, you're a little misinformed. We can't write to the SD card at all. Not just apps2sd is broken. I don't care about that. I can't create a folder on my SD Card with Solid Explorer without rooting my phone and modifying a system file. That's bull****. The phone is advertised on play.google.com as supporting expandable storage. They need to fix it.

You're right. I am. But you guys looking for people's help in getting the problem fixed also did a crappy job of explaining it. Let me help.
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/08/ga...-android-4-3-breaks-sd-card-writing-for-apps/
Since it's an identified problem that's been picked up by the media you can pretty much assume a fix is in the works. Relying on low-paid third party call center agents as a source of info ("Samsung's not aware of the problem") isn't really that wise as they are typically the last to know about both problems and their solutions.
Hope it gets fixed soon.
I called this morning to the mobile services number. They did ask me for my IMEI number he repeated the issue back to me and he understood it as a SD writing issue not apps to SD issue.
I also requested he put in to Google "4.3 issue with s4 Google edition" and they will see several post explaining the issue.
He said he would forward to technical support.
To those with a GT-I9505G please call even if you do not care about the issue.
Although ES file explorer work to move pics and video to the Ext SD card, this should be fixed for this model since it is about the only pure android OS with an SD card.

You people expect an answer by calling samsung? Seriously?
Let me tell you this- they don't care. They got away with your $$$ and don't give a rat's poop.
They release updates and put what they want on it when they feel like it (or a court order forces them).
That's why XDA exists so we won't have to be so reliant on samsung regarding features that we want.

They apparently listened on the low available space on the S4 and brought back apps to SD for the S4 in a fairly quick update. In the case of the S4 Google Edition, we are taking about one line of code in the platform.xml file. I do expect them to issue a fix. Why wouldn't they if it is a legitimate bug? If not, they may as well stop making the S4 GPe because nobody will buy them if this is not fixed. Many people that buy the s4 GPe want their apps to have write access the ext SD card.
The Samsung email address page is a little tricky to find here it is

This is what I wrote feel free to use all or part
I have a recently purchased Samsung s4 google edition i9505G from the Google play store. After the 4.3 android update my apps have lost the ability to write to the sd card. This has been documented in many articles on the web.
I have talked to Google and they told me a fix for this would be your responsibility.
Are you aware of this problem? Are you working on a fix? Thanks!
I'm sure this will be patched eventually but I don't think bugging them will make it any quicker lol

[Q] The android "Encryption" mystery

OK lets hope i got this in to the right forum,
Ive search high and low and come to the conclusion that android in general sucks big balls when it comes to encryption your phone. In general somewhere after gingerbread android added some security by adding a device encryption in your Security setting that encrypts your phones (internal) storage and ROM partitions and thats great even if you have to enter your full 16-32 character encryption password/pin every time you unlock your phone, your phone is somewhat secure, that is if you dont use a SD card. All the info on the SD card is still totally open.
So to my mystery question: why is this Encryption option missing from so many ROMS?? is it only Samsung that cares about Encryption and gives many of its models full encryption...I really dont get it.
I have a Samsung galaxy s3 clone that has this Encryption and its great, i was just about to buy a really sweet Chinese phone with all the bells and whistles but it lacks the Encryption option like so many others famous and less famous brands....Why...why......why...
any thoughts, answers or are you just as flabbergasted as me??
Yes, and flabbergasted that so little people are talking about good solutions for encrypting all data. For example the lack of replies to this post
I am using Slimkat Rom with also the encrypt sd card option missing.
Isn't there a way like updating an apk or something to get the encrypt SD Card option back?

I have a Samsung galaxy s3 clone that has this Encryption and its great, i was just about to buy a really sweet Chinese phone with all the bells and whistles but it lacks the Encryption option like so many others famous and less famous brands....Why...why......why...
any thoughts, answers or are you just as flabbergasted as me??

And the privacy of yout data from within Android? As a Blackberry user, I'm used in allowing what I let and what I don't let the apps access!
I know it's crazy, but look at this screen shot and tell me your not jealous... It's from my galaxy s3 running stock 4.3, all custom roms omit the sdcard options and Samsung is the only brand I've seen adding this option
Sent from my SC-03E using xda app-developers app
So really? No custom roms with the encrypt SD Card option?

I really hope there is, but i havent seen it yet. only thing would be to buy a samsung. im not sure if there is some special hardware samsung is using for the encryption part, if not i dont get it not being availabe in other roms.
And you are so right about the Android community not commenting or even mentioning the lack of encryption. Its almost like people dont want it....which to me sound totally ludicrous. who wouldnt want their data secure in this day and age....right??? I mean iphones are secure since....the stone ages.....common guys wake up, make some noise!!! we want encryption!!!!
that was my 5cents worth haha

Don't forget, if you encrypt data, you better have a backup of it!! Maybe that's the reason why only a few people use encryption features both on PCs and mobile devices!

I attached a pic, the option is available on HTC One M8 though ironically enough it's not in the security settings, it's actually in the storage overview, but the ability to encrypt it IS there :good:
Sorry, I stumbled upon this thread while looking for a way to encrypt and protect specific folders on the SD Card as the young ones use the device too and I'd rather protect work related and some "vulgar so-called funny pics" I get sent from BBM, Hangouts etc. I just had to reply on this thread though because the encryption option is on at least the new HTC.
