CM9 and can't play mkv files - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi,
I just installed CM9 alpha 4 teamchopsticks ROM yesterday and I have been trying to play some 720p mkv tv files with MX Player. I have tried others but they just won't play... I've tried locally and across the network via samba share to no avail. Any ideas?
thanks in advance!

I would post this in the ROMs thread, but try a different player and if that doesn't work then its probably not supported in the ROM.

I've been playing mkvs just fine. Make sure to enable software decoding if hardware decoding doesn't work on the codec

Odd... i can't get any MKV files to play at all in soft or hardware decoding. The 720p mp4 files play only in software decoding mode and not hardware. hmmmm maybe your using a different kernel?

Best video app?

Whats the best app for video? This is my first android so i don't know what is "best." i need it to play MKV, Mp4, AVI, etc.... all @ HD.
MX Video Player
Thanks i will try it.
MX works very good on Fire.
Just watched Modern Family mkv in HD (720p), hardware accelerated, without lags and nothing.
PS. The only problem was the audio channel that didn't work in HW mode. Just changed that to SW decoding and everything was fine.

Yep, MX Video Player is the best video player for the Kindle Fire.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
It's working on my mkv files very well. I also had to switch audio to software decode.
//Tapatalk.KindleFire//
what about vplayer?
I have always trusted in VLC Player, however, technically its still in closed beta for Android, and not available for direct download via the Market.
With the OP being new to Android, I guess I might be expecting a little too much to say, Google for it (VLC-neon.apk), and sideload it?! But I'm putting it out there anyway!

How do you get it to work where you the gray pullup bar on the bottom doesn't interfere with the onscreen controls? Also, do you know if it can stream from Dropbox/Sugarsync? I haved some vids on SS that I stream on Moboplayer, but can't get them to stream on MX.

ICS roms choppy video fix

I couldn't find a video player that would work with cyanogen mod 9 ics rom because lack of hardware acceleration i found that MX video player (free) does work perfectly on my p1000 galaxy tab when set to software decoding though just thought i would let everyone know because i was trying multiple things to get it to work. I have only tried this with .3gp video though. My ics rom does everything I need it to now, hope this helps .

If you look in the description of the video you posted its using mx video player thats why its working because currently there is no hardware acceleration.
I still get like a tear looking thing on the upper right part of the screen. How to fix that?

When I posted this It was working with software decoder only, you are using a slimdizzy rom a nightly build I was using "CM9 (WIP)" at the time. Now hardware acceleration works fine anyways on Milestone 4 rom.
Update MoboPlayer works better than Mx Video Player
I have found out MoboPlayer is a better solution for a video player. Mx Video Player seems to have some glitches with video playback. I am using build #28 AOKP ICS rom with MoboPlayer and am very pleased with MoboPlayer it works perfect with no choppy playback at all.

On CM9 + latest humberos kernel I still get video lag for mp4 1080p videos using MX player. Mobo player works like a charm though.

Codecs needed?

I'm trying to play some avi's and mpgs on my Infinity, but they don't seem to want to work. I tried both Dice Player and BS Player but no go. These same files worked on my Prime, so I'm not sure what the issue might be. Are there some codecs that need to be downloaded or something, or does the Infinity just not play these type of files? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

what happens when you try to play them? where are they stored?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
the player just shows a black screen and then kicks me back out to the file structure to select another file. Theyre stored both in internal and microsd.

So how are your files encoded? (check on your PC if unsure)
he mentioned mpgs and avi I think. To the OP what about stock player? if that doesn't play an .avi something is wrong. you shouldn't need codecs for .avi or .mpeg. uninstall both BS and DICE since they don't work you can also try MXPlayer and get the arm7 codec pack as well (both free). that is my favorite and has played every file type so far

i think MX will play .mkv if you have the arm7 codec pack installed as well. Just a thought. mt2 not sure what file type that is so idk if mx usually plays that or not.

You can have tons of different codecs in the avi files, so that's not really specific.
That's good this worked for you, OP, but Dice and BS should play mkv x264 files just fine, so this is unusual. It would be a different story if you got video with no audio because of DTS encoding.

Excellent point that people tend to overlook. AVI and MPG are both Container Formats. Just because they have the same file extension that another working video does doesn't mean you will be able to decode it.
Use a more in depth way of finding out why it won't work.

ive always used moboplayer and never had issues, but on my infinity I have found several videos that simply dont play. They are wmv. These videos play fine on my Atrix (cm7 - GB) , Acer a500 (ICS), and HTC View (HC)... I was wondering if it's the tegra 3 architecture that needs something special? Moboplayer has codec packs, but I generally dont use them... weird.

DIdn't know about the .avi having different codecs, thought .avi was .avi. As for Dice and BS I agree they should work but figured since they didn't why not try MX, which seems to have worked for the OP. Personally I like MX best anyway so I may be a little biased
I used to love MX on my TF101, but when I tried it on the TF700 it kept using software rendering (so big battery drain as CPU is working hard). All of the same files played using hardware rendering with Dice. Am i missing something?

[Q] Soft-subbed mkv video playback problem

Hello fellow GNOTE 10.1 users,
Idk if anyone else tried it but when I try to play some soft subbed 720p videos (mostly anime videos with eng subtitles) the stock media player could only play audio and the best I can have some laggy playback using BsPlayer free. So, does anyone know a way to solve this problem? Is it a much broader problem in Android devices in general that has not been soIved yet or does some certain magical codec pack do the trick?

Try mx player and install codecs for arm v7
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Nope, it is laggy as hell, the video and the audio go out of sync awfully frequently. By the way, I have tried many 1080p movies and they worked seamlessly before, so my unit is definitely not at fault here. Any other suggestions?

Try both hw/sw /hw + acceleration. If it doesn't work. Then the last chance is in dice player those are the best 3 players in market, but don't worry it is definitely not the device's problem it is software issue
Sent from my X10S using xda app-developers app
Tried both. in hw it does not even show the video and in sw the problems I've pointed out persists. I've tried many different players before -dice as well and it was BsPlayer which gave the best performance. Though as I said, it is also laggy.
Thanks for your time and suggestions.
Yeah, I have the same problem. Looks like I will have to extract all the subs....no other player worked....
Edit: I tried another animes from other sub groups and some of them are working, like from gg and gotspeed, no luck with coomie and utw though, I gotta look at it, maybe theres problem with the format of the subs.
Guys, after the long struggle, I found the remedy! Just install archos video player and its codec pack and that's it. 10-bit video playback problem is gone forever.

How do you play MP4 movies?

I downloaded The Dark knight Rises to my phone (from flixster) and I get an error message saying the video cannot be played. I tried downloading several different mp4 video players from the Play Store, but none of those worked either.
Any suggestions? It is happening both to my GSII and my GNoteII
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Mp4 video you are trying to play probably contains a different codec written onto it.
Have you tried 'mxplayer' from store?
Also download different codecs from store after you download mxplayer.
Hope it helps.

A codec is way/method of archieving lossy compression of a video/audio stream. To be able to decode a video using a certain codec your video player needs to support that codec. If your video is in .mp4 format it's most likely going to be using h.264 codec, but I'm surprised you can't play your video with mxplayer cause I've only had success with that.
Have you actually been able to play this video on your computer?
http://www.winxdvd.com/hd-video-converter-deluxe/download.htm?upgrade
Try Dice player from the play store! One of my friend has a note 2 and uses this app! It has lots of cool features and supports a wide variety of formats and codecs! Give it a try! :good:
Okay, so I have figured it out. I have to actually watch the movie in the flixster app, and not through my stock gallery...which I was hoping I could use the pop up play feature, but oh well...
Thank you everyone for your responses, I will still try the dice player just for kicks. Do you know if that one has a pop up player?
