First, the new Droid Sans for the dev phone works great! If you haven't seen it, check the market!
That program, and some of the other apks, such as the one for flash seem to get a ton of really stupid comments in the market. Also, the market now seems to be too big, with not enough sub-categories to find things easily.
IMO, there should at least be a category for advanced users and developers only. (Maybe even one which you would have to sign in to visit, with a big disclaimer saying something like "These programs will not run on most G1s. They are programs for rooted or (don't know if Google will like the rooted part), developer's phones. Many of them are apk's for developers to make it easier for them to write better apps for you, rather than stand-alone-apps. If you are a developer, or an advanced user, please sign up to download the apps."
Is there a place to suggest improvements to the market to Google?
(Maybe I just am feeling nasty after looking at all those grade school comments in the market).

tbh i think that if you had a moderator (obviously not just the one ) who
monitored the market and removed stupid comments and who could even issue 24 hour bans or something it would improve things tenfold.
and about the rooted section, google wouldn't like it but what can they do? no matter what they release people will find a way to get root access again google might as well just release cupcake with root access already enabled.
If Google released cupcake with root access, there would be an awful lot of happy G1 users!
I see you have RC30, do you have auto rotate with your pictures? Now that I've got the new Droid Sans, everything except pictures seems to auto rotate. (although I've only tried one photo so far, I need to check others).

Action Script Reference. It doesn't do Flash, it's a help for Flash and Flex developers. (I added that in case there are any non developers reading this who think they are going to have Flash by downloading it).
This has been on my mind for a long time. I hope I will get a definitive answer in this topic.
I am quite fond of the HTC Dream, but I got a Hero because my carrier did not have the Dream. To my disappointment, almost every application was skinned by HTC. The music player, the lock-screen, the message-application, almost everything.
The browser even had some functionality removed, although it gained 'pinch to zoom'. Also the photo app is a lot slower, and the music player is very clumsy compared to the Dream player.
-Is it possible to port these applications to other android phones, in this case the HTC Hero?
-If so, would it be difficult?
Here is a list of the 'applications' that I confirmed as skinned by HTC:
-sms application
-music player
-calendar
-browser
-lock screen
-cellphone /dialer application
-contact list
-camera application
-albums application
I understand that the Hero is at 1.5, thus it would require the corresponding 1.5 Dream applications.
I ask this in the Dream forum, because you obviously have experience with the Dream, and also a very good understanding of how android works. Thanks for reading this!
Grab a 1.5 rom and try to install the apps.
You do realize that this is a feature of the hero and senseUI correct?

I understand that the skinned apps are 'features'.
I want to know if it is possible.

It would be possible, you would just to have the corresponding apps from a 1.5 dream rom. You would lose all of the features that the skinned one's have though. It also would not be possible without root access as you would need to replace system apps, which need elevated permissions

In the Hero forum, a developer was claiming that this would not be possible, because the Dream apps use a custom framework, which the Hero lacks. He (literary) said they would never be fully functional or stable
But root access, plus replacing the app should suffice?

i have run many hero roms and had no issues installing older apk files from my G1. this has never been a problem. I am now running 2.0 and most of the widgets that i was able to run on hero i cannot run on here so in a word "no" they are probably not compatible. im thinking of going back to my hero =(

It should yes, you would grab the Browser.apk from a cupcake build and push it to something like /system/app or /data/app_s or /system/sd/app_s or /data/app_int depending on what rom you're running
You MIGHT be able to use the early, non Sense UI Hero ROM dump apps.... but I have no idea where to find it now....
Stock Android?
Well, replacing all those apps should be as simple as replacing the apks in /system/app with the apks from stock Cupcake... but.... why have Hero if you replace them all? You're pretty much left with just stock Cupcake and some Hero framework that doesn't do you any good, except maybe for HTC Peep and Weather.... Why wouldn't you just use a regular Android build? 1.6 AOSP + Google apps should run fine on Hero... I don't know how well CyanogenMod supports Hero, but I imagine it should work just fine, considering Cyanogen officially supports the Magic.
I know this doesn't exactly answer your question, but, seriously... why the heck would you want to do that, instead of just run an AOSP-based build?
Thanks for all the replies!
The Hero devs have not yet produced a working AOSP-based build, which is why that would not be an option.
Exchanging all the apps would, for me, be the best solution because 1.6 is not needed, and I want the trackball to function, along with the GPS for example.
1.5 with the original apps would be a blessing.
Afterwards, I can try to delete all the HTC things that keep popping up in the memory, like touch-flo (I use the regular homescreen), or the HTC mail, which I never used or set up, and see if it keeps working (without crashing).
So my best course of action would be:
1) collect all necessary apps from a 1.5 cupcake build
2) backup everything
3) root hero
4) nandroid backup
5) locate the to be replaced app
6) replace an app and see if the phone still works
7) repeat 5 and 6 until everything is working as much as possible
8) another nandroid backup of the working "stock cupcake-apped" Rom
and if I have time left;
9) locate HTC sense-related programs, delete them and see if the rom still works.
Any tips or changes to my plan before I attempt this?
barking up the wrong tree, here's what you do:
1. Find 1.5-based HTC rom (like in rogers or sapphire phones, not stock google ones)
2. ???
3. profit

lol an oldie but a goodie
honestly, to the OP, i'm not sure if you can push apps over adb to the hero. If you can, go and download haykuro 6.0r1. This is a "hero" rom, but in very early stages that I assume would run the stock apps from it on your hero. None of the hero apps at that stage were themed.
but remember, this is only if you can push apps to your hero over adb.
also, hate to say it, but the hero isn't rooted...
wait it has! mebbe i should buy one now... lol

No somebody found it, but it is way too complicated. It requires a goldcard and this and that. Way too long of a guide for my way too short attention span.
Unless you have a Sprint Hero, but I didn't do a google search for that so I would
Hi,
I'm wondering if we could make a list of unsafe bloatwares to remove. For example, I came across this:
APPS YOU SHOULD NOT REMOVE:
-Don't remove weather, news, or FriendStream. The widgets should be fine but not the actual apps. They are too deeply integrated into the system and will break things. Some people have not experienced problems while others (including myself) have seen some major issues from removing these. It's best just to avoid.

I am new to Android (been only 3 days!), so I don't know enough to know if the above comment is true. And, I think there will be other people in the same shoe as myself. So, it may be helpful to create a list that we can just glance at to know which bloatwares are safe to remove and which are not.
GT
most of the htc apps are ok to remove. when i was running a sense rom, i removed pretty much all of the htc apps. the only one i had an issue with after removing it was the friendstream.
you can always make a nandroid backup of your current working rom, then start deleting things and seeing if it has an effect. if anything breaks your phone, jot it down, restore the nandroid, and keep going.
its fun!
cant find the list of the apps ok to remove, can someone help?
Just wish to share about experiment...

So , I've tried the methode shown here...

To slightly modify my favorite ROM...
Found here...

Honestly I was having doubt or concern about the simplicity of the methode.
But at first try (with a lot of thread reading) it worked.
Pretty stable with a placebo feel of quickness.
So I've worked with an excellent base core (Thank CDT).
Here a look of change made easily...
ABC VERSION ELECTRO-MACHANICAL ORIENTED (SOCIAL NETWORK REMOVED)

LASER LEVEL, BARCODE SCANNER, MY WORK CLOCK (PUNCH)...
[*] PAID APP THAT I SHOULD REPLACE BY FREE ONES IF SHARED...
My goal here is to share the methode found, and experience not to add a new ROM .
So has It's all based on other-one work I wont shared the .ZIP without asking of those team...
So P3D team, team XPOSED, and betelgeuse74 own your ''THANK''...
Hope I won't be banned to ''out-of-subject-post''
Alex
Did the same with P3D 8.0.0
Testing continued...
I've made the same kind of modification with the last version of the ROM...
Funny thing, in despite of that I've removed Myhtc app the shortcut ''HTC Hub'' was still in the app folder...
So I've try by ''Tinanium B-U'' to set the app as user ones (nice tool avalaibale with paid version)... What induce a FC of TB-U. Nice thing because the shortcut desapered from the app list...
So now everything is like a charm.
Took time to launch every app that I've moved or add and everyting work fine....
After an ''app-killing'' I've got 241M of free memory wath is a record for me.
As I where ''app-removing-happy'' and have concern, I' ve made a version much nerar the stock one just in case... So It's a good a Idea to have a more trusted zip on the sd to flash in case....
But at first attemps It worked fine...
Wish My post's can give self confidence to those who hesitate to try...
Has I'll learn new way to adapt without dev. experience I'll keep feeding you.
Good testing .
Alex
What? I don't understand the point in this?
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk
The point is that he wants to tell us that if you have a rom you like, but you dislike certain parts of it (like apps) or you would like to add anything, you can do it yourself following a few guides.
So you can make your own rom from a base..
without much knowledge..
and this way we wont need like 500 roms, which all change one thing,
just edit your favorite rom and use it!
I think this is very useful!
Next time you should place it in the right section
Wow thank you for this, your hard work is appreciated.
Remember to give THANKS when THANKS is due.
From P3D to S3N5EaY
Hi , So yesterday, after testing P3D 8.1 (cust.), run and test no_sens scrypt...
Just to see free RAM from version to another I finally flash Sensay...
Have to admit that I was nicely surprised to have more free RAM with cust. Sensay with 2 zip addon (remove vol wake, cdt tweak) than with P3D...
Read the exacte contrary everywhere... (About free RAM)...
Should have done something wrong
I can make a change log of wath I removed and add if somedy is curious...
I'll feed you back soon...
Senseay was easier to customize than P3D 8.1...
When not sure about about need of an apk ou can try to force it to close to see consequences or freeze it by Titanium back-up Easy to recognize app by their icon...
So after flashing, while connected to pc (I use adb to reboot bootloader only), a sound from pc at every time I dropped the quick setting menu... (May be it'S just cause I was still connected via adb).
First time I was flashing cdt tweak (without knowing what it was [really thrust this guy]) so as *#*#4636#*#* is one of firsts things a verify after flashing...
after finding track back it's a nice thing to be able to set everything... And I found my phone test ...
I want to inform every developers of not only HTC explorer developers but also other phone Rom developers that these apps is recommended to be in the Rom's please.
First of all, most of Rom's don't have apps such as
Apps2sd
File manager
And titanium backup
It's necessary that there should be these apps to help the users by making them comfortable to access important files and this even helps the Rom developers get more thanks
It would be very helpful if every Rom developers see that these apps to be included.
If I have missed anything, plz post it
Please click the thanks button if this helped
Many ROMs are based on AOSP/CM and as such attempt to keep to the minimalistic CM build ethic. The OS is stripped down to the bare OS, nothing more. It is up to the user to install whatever they want beyond that. Usually there is a file manager (CM certainly contains one, and CM-derived ROMs probably contain the CM one), but the others are user preference. While many probably do want some sort of apps2sd script, there are dozens to choose from, and it's up to the user to decide which is right for them. TB is again probably used by quite a few people, but it's still not an essential part of the OS (a file manager, arguably, is [despite it's exclusion from AOSP] and so it is included), and not everyone will want it.
The ROMs are built this way ("bare bones") deliberately; otherwise the situation becomes as dire as the one with manufacturers and carriers preloading all sorts of rubbish people don't want. It is much, much better to release the OS as stripped back as possible and leave it up to the user to choose their apps. It literally takes about a minute to install TB and mounts2SD from the Play Store, and then you have everything you requested (assuming your ROM has a file manager; if not, add a few more seconds to install one of those two). For those that want those things, that's not much to ask. It's better than expecting them to first remove, say, int2ext+ so they can install mounts2sd if they would prefer mounts2sd (just an example, never bothered to compare the two very much).
tl;dr - It is the way it is, and for good reason. Don't expect it to change.

I guess all developers will be very thankful that you pointed out which apps they have to include into their roms .
It's not that they know themselves what they want to do and what not. They surely need you to tell them.
I would suggest you make your own rom with all those apps then, just to make sure the community has at least one quality rom

that and moreover .. including apps without asking the original devs of the apps even in copy paste ports is a practice I feel is unethical .

I joined this forum long ago, but didn't post anything. Because I didn't know what to post. Slowly i started to learn the activities of developers. How they create a new thread and add roms, and give out new builds. I have even tried almost all of the roms .
Then i decided to create my own, and i did and its still in development. As i got to know that i can't start new threads in forums related to development without atleast 10 posts, i started posting new posts or thread. :silly:
