I am new to XDA and to custom ROMS. Just got my Skyrocket second hand on CL. Came rooted with SKY ICS 4.2D-9. Running Apex launcher. Great phone Great ROM. It also has the 4.2D-10 update on the internal SD, not the external. There are two files showing the update. Not sure how I go about updating the phone. Any help would be appreciated. Hope this is the right forum to post this. Thanks to all in advance.
First off, welcome to XDA. Second, read this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427268 Stop when it starts becoming irrelevant. Third, there is a new version of SKYICS out. But since you are new to all this. I suggest you do some reading first on all of this. As it can be really confusing and very overwhelming to a newcomer.
The latest is SkyICS 4.2E -9.
It requires a full format of all the usual spots and then re-flash the entire thing from scratch.
If your phone is doing "Fine" now, then I'd just leave it as-is until you get bored.
Before you do ANYTHING though, make sure to download & install ROM Manager and then Clockwork Mod and do a full backup in case you need to restore.
Because your first flash will prolly result in a fubar. It does for 99% of folks. Maybe not that much.
Also install Titanium Backup PRO and back up all your apps first.
Also install SMS Backup+ or something similar and set it to back up all your text messages and phone calls.
And synch your contacts with google.
And THEN start thinking about rooting & ROM'ing.

Btw, here is the SkyICS development thread.

Thank you to all from a newbie
Appreciate the quick replys. I will read up on all the links. Thank you all

Do not, I repeat, do not install Clockwork Mod from ROM Manager for Sky ICS ROM's. Touch clockwork is required for this ROM and is most likely already installed on your device if you bought it from someone on Craigslist and Sky ICS is already installed. I would strongly suggest that you check the development thread posted above for further information because your device is running the UCLD base at the moment. This ROM is now on the UCLE base and will require a destructive wipe and start from scratch before flashing the UCLE base or any updates.
As suggested, read the entire thread, or at the very least, read all of Seanzscreams opening posts at least 3 times before attempting to flash any of his ROM's. If you run into snags, please search the thread thoroughly before posting any questions. The thread has started to get very cluttered with questions that have been answered over and over again because people will not use the search function or just take the time to read through the thread.
We all try to be as helpful as we can over there, but it has gotten to the point where tempers are apt to flare if a question is posed before doing some serious reading first. Follow the rules and you will be fine. Hope to see you there as this is absolutely the best ROM for the Skyrocket at this time.

Thanks for the info. I am already on the UCLE baseband-I727UCLE2. Does this change anything.

You state here that you are on baseband UCLD (4.2D-9) as noted by the version number D-9. And that you have the 4.2D-10 update on your internal storage but not yet flashed.
When you look in Settings, About Phone, what does it say there?
EDIT: My apologies. I supplied incorrect information above. Baseband is referring to the radio/modem that is installed on the device. There are three to choose from but UCLE2 is the latest. The person that had the device before you most likely flashed the newest one to try and get better reception. Look at the last line in Settings, About Phone and let me know what it says there. We are looking for the info which will be listed under "Build Number". That will tell me what base you are actually running at the moment. Sorry for the confusion between Base and Baseband. LOL

theres a newer base for skyics so full wipe required, did u understand what i just wrote, no, then read b4 u do anything, read the stickies, faq's and the "Q & A" a few times, read the 2nd last line in my signature, if u dont understand something, learn how to use the search, everything has been answered for n00bs, so read and search and u will b fine, effort is required for ur part........like in previous post, dont ask questions pertaining to installing or a sentence starting with "what is " or "why is there a white line on the top of my screen" in the development thread, u could start a war

OK, as it stands now, if you do have the 4.2D-10 update stored on your device, you should be perfectly safe in flashing it via Clockworkmod. You can flash this one without doing any wipes or formats. Just choose flash zip from SD card, locate it then flash it. Once it is complete, reboot the device and you should be good to go.
If you happen to want to be on the latest build, then you must go into the thread and do the suggested studying/reading before flashing the new base and update.
And don't apologize for being a n00b, we were all there at one time or another. Just follow the rules, read a LOT, and if you really can't find an answer to your question via reading or the search function feel free to hit me up personally. I would be glad to assist you. You seem like a guy that is honestly wanting to do the right thing and for that I commend you.

Once again thanks. Just want to make sure I do this right. On my internal sd are two zip files, SKY ICS 4.2D--Zx3-Goomail and SKY ICS 4.2D-10 Update. When I am in recovery I have the option to "Install zip from SD card". Am I installing just the update zip or both of them?
I recommend that you follow seanz's instructions in the thread to the letter.
Your question is answered there as well as many other potential questions you might have. There will be no open holes to fall through.
However, in the case that you still won't follow everyone else's recommendations who have said the exact same thing and end up bricking your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653022
-------------------------------------------------------------
-First Make sure you are on TOUCH CLOCKWORK
(either use odin or use rom manager and flash touch clockwork)
Then
-Reboot to Clockwork
-Wipe Data Factory Data reset a few times
-wipe cache
-mounts and storage, and format systemx3
-Wipe dalvik cache
-Then choose 4.2e base and install zip
-wipe cache partition
-Install Modem
-reboot.. and let cache and settle in
-now go to busy box installer and install busybox
-in rom manager run fixpermisssions
-then reboot
HOW TO UPDATE
-choose latest update and place on sd card
-make sure you follow directions..
first you flashed a base
then you rebooted and installed busybox
now your ready to go
-reboot to recovery
clear cache
-install update
-reboot phone and run fix permissions
-------------------------------------------------------------
What's the "install modem" part?
Glad you asked.
It's the UCLD2 modem that pairs with your UCLD2 base that you are trying to flash.
You'll need it if you want proper data support on your phone.

The 4.2D--Zx3-Goomail is the base, which you already have installed. The 4.2D-10 Update is just what it says, an update. If you choose to install the update, first, in clockworkmod choose "wipe cache partition" and let it do it's thing, then you can choose "Install zip from sd card, then choose the update to install (4.2D-10 Update) and let it run until it's says it is complete and tells you it's time to reboot your device. After the device reboots, let it settle for 5 minutes or so, then run ROM manager and run "fix permissions". If fix permissions hangs or does not seem to want to complete, run the busybox installer from your app drawer and tell it to install busybox, after you do that the fix permissions should run through to completion with no problems. Once fix permissions has completed reboot your device and you should be golden.
But before you do the above, you want to go into mounts and storage in recovery and choose "mount sdcard", then go back to the main menu and choose "backup and restore" and do a "backup to external sdcard" so that you will have a backup of your current setup in case something goes wrong with the flash.
If the flash borks your device you can then reboot into Clockworkmod and do a "restore from external sdcard" and you will be right back where you are at the moment.

bfleischman is wanting to try and install an update on top of the 4.2D base. I am giving him specific instructions on this process that is specific to this base and this update. I know you are trying to be helpful, but he does not need any added instructions that could be confusing.
Please refrain from posting any further instructions on this "specific" process unless you see something that I have missed in my instructions.
If his device is currently running the 4.2D base and he is only wanting to install the update, there is no need in supplying all of the instructions above, especially modem install instructions as he is most certainly already using a fully functional modem at the present time.
Thank you for understanding ..... HTR

As per Seanz instructions, Touch CWM only for SkyICS builds. Too many little odd things not working correctly if not using Touch CWM.
I am using the touch version bi sk8erwitzkil and have had no problems whatsoever. I would assume that the touch version available in ROM Manager would work just as well since a lot of others are using it with no problems.
When I said do not install CWM from ROM Manager, I was speaking of the standard, non-touch version.
CZ Eddie did not specify "Touch CWM" in his post, he simply said to install CWM from ROM Manager. I wanted to stop anyone from installing the wrong one.

I think that that's what I'm saying. I had asked the question some time ago, "does it matter which version of Touch is used, the one from the xda Dev, or Koush's" and the answer was no" so long as it's the Touch version.?

Now I got ya, as far as I know there's no difference, as long as you have one or the other. Except for TWRP, I do recall some people having issues when using it.
As long as you use the one from this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472954, or the touch version in ROM Manager, you should be fine.
Ah got it.
I wasn't very thorough at reading the OP.
My suggestion to bfleischman after the update is applied successfully and you're satisfied:
Since you seem to have the drive to attempt the acrobatics req'd for extra functionality on your phone, I would take a look at the new post by seanz for SKY ICS 4.2E
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653022
This is the follow-on to 4.2D
Honestly, it's very hard to brick your phone after CWM Touch is installed, and I was using fear-mongering tactics. As long as you understand how backup/restore works in CWM, which hitekredneck has explained above, you're good to go.

I bought the premium version of ROM Manager so that I can get access to the nightly builds. I choose the nightly build I want to install and select the google apps, I get to the clockwork recovery screen, it backsup data does MD5, and then format /cache /data and tries to install the ROM and it fails. I have tried this with #54-#58 and I get the same result. Can someone please point me in the right direction ?
and you created your own special thread for this why?
in my opinion, its faster and more helpful than search
Before you start downloading and flashing roms I suggest that you read through the entire first post of the nightly thread and after you are done re-read the post again then follow the links and re-re-read while you are flashing the roms. I myself am a newb to all this but I found that all of the information is already there if you just take your time and follow directions, and it will pay off in the end

I think he's being sarcastic although I could be wrong.
Sorry Guys did not mean to violate any rules here... I am just super frustrated right now. I have done Rom Manager CM7 installs some 5-6 times, the install process goes though backup, format /cache /data and then starts to install ROM and suddenly fails. Does CM7 nightly build install from Rom Manager work? I read though a ton of forum posts and looks like it is working for people or may be not... can some one point me to *A* thread that I can rely on to get CM7 on this G2X? Really really really appreciate your help on this.
ROM Manager is an inferior method of ROM flashing. Use NVFlash to flash ClockworkMod Recovery to your phone (NVFlash allows for a true flash rather than the application's fake flash) then when you want to flash a ROM (or do a backup, or anything else ROM manager does) just boot your phone into recovery (hold power and volume down until you see the green Android logo, trust me it will make sense) and do it from there.
I have never, ever, been able to get ROM Manager to work in flashing roms. Or for much of anything else for that matter. It's just better to do things directly.
Rooted the phone based on instructions from:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/LG_Optimus_2X:_Rooting
Installed CWM from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1108201
Installed ROM manger premium,
adb push cm_nightlybuild.apk /sdcard
when I reboot to recovery I get /!\ with an andriod green logo. What do I do next ? seems like it wont go into recovery mode now... but when I reboot (pull the battery and press power button) I am able to boot into stock Andriod 2.2.
If your are running the rooted stock you should know when your download rom they will be downloaded on your internal memory and when rom manager boot into recovery it is not able to see your internal memory you should put the roms on your external SD card

So i've been here on the Sidekick 4G forums since the day its been made. From the first thread to the one your on right now. And i saw as development began to pick up many new Sidekick 4G users or people new to android in general have questions and some of these questions get asked multiple times and is answered by the same people all the time. We all do our best to keep a friendly atmosphere on the forums and make everyone here feel comfortable and welcome. But sometimes when the same people answer the same question 30+ times they may get a bit impatient and loose their friendly outlook, although they mean no harm.. they can still get frustrated. So thats why i decided to make this thread, i saw how well it works in other Forums and hopefully it helps here too.
First and foremost, this is the development section, not Q&A. If you need to ask a question such as "how do i...", "what does...do/mean", etc post it in the general section as we do not yet have a Q&A. Or simply post it here and i'll answer it for you. it is much better than to have 5+ new questions in the Development section every week and such a small count of ROMs and other things that actually contribute to Development for the Sidekick.
So Lets begin - FAQ
Q - What is Android ?
A - Android is a Mobile OS for smartphones, more specifically it's a version of Linux. There are several versions to date and they all have names as well as version codes. The most recent (at the moment) are Froyo(2.2), Gingerbread(2.3), and Honeycomb(3.0). also theres the upcoming Icecream Sandwich(4.0).
Q - What is Root ?
A- Short answer: If you don't know, you don't need it. Long answer: root is equivalent in Linux to having administrator privileges in Windows. It allows you to change more system settings as well as run apps that need root access. It also allows you to flash custom ROMs as well as do a lot more. Root is for power users, not your average user. Can the average user benefit from root? yes but power users will benefit more. Root can also screw your phone if you don't know what you're doing.
Q - Where can i get root ?
A - There is an easy one Click root method Guide for the SK4G here [GUIDE]SuperOneClick - Root/Unroot Your Samsung Sidekick 4G
Q - What is a Custom ROM ?
A - A Custom ROM, simply put, is software for your phone. It's the main OS and usually includes other apps, tweaks, settings, and things you like that you don't normally find in a stock phone.
Q - Where can i find a custom ROM ?
A - Here in the Devopment Section
Q - How do I flash a ROM ?
A - Short Answer: In Recovery (CWM) wipe data and cache then install XXROMXX.zip from sdcard. Long Answer: Download XXROMXX.zip and put it on the Root of your SDcard, Reboot into recovery and wipe your data and cache from the main menu. Then if you are on a orange Recovery be sure to Check your Mounts (if on RED VOODOO CWM then no need for this) to make Sure they look like this under "Mounts and storage" selection in CWM:
"UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM" - if they do then its safe to flash the zip select flash zip. Now go back to CWM main menu and select install zip from sdcard>choose zip from sdcard>XXROMXX.zip>yes, and the ROM will begin to flash. Once done if your on Orange CWM recovery check your mounts again to make sure they are still the same then select Reboot System Now.
Q - How do i get into recovery ?
Manually, Using the 3ButtonCombo (VolDown+VolUp+POWER, simultaneously) . Or while on the phone, Use an app like quick boot and if your ROM has an extended power menu you will have a recovery option that will boot you into recovery.
Q - How do i Flash a Kernel ?
A - The Same way you would flash a ROM
Q - What is a Kernel ?
A - A kernel is the core of a Linux OS, it's what all the other software is built around. No core/kernel, no OS. A custom kernel enables features that the stock kernel didn't have such as OCing and/or Ext4 capability
Q - How do i flash a modem ?
A - Same way you Flash a ROM
Q - Where can i find other modems ?
A - There are very few at the moment but you can find them in this thread [REF][MODEMS][CWM] Samsung Sidekick 4G
Q - How do i know what modem im currently on ?
A - Go to setting>about phone and it tells you under Baseband version. The last 3 characters are the code for your current modem.
Q - What is "cooking" a ROM ?
A - Building a ROM from source is usually referred to as "cooking" a ROM, but sometimes cooking can also mean rebuilding a themed ROM.
Q - Where can i find the Best ROM ?
A - There is no best ROM, only ROMs that are best for you. Look through the different ROMs and see which one fits your needs the best.
Q - I tried to flash a ROM now my phone is stuck at the "Sidekick 4G" Slash Screen HELP !?!
A - Most likely you missed a step in the installing process, possibly didnt check your mounts ? try a battery pull, then well if you can get back into recovery try wiping and trying the installation over carefully. If that doesnt work or you cannot get into Recovery your phone can still be recovered you just need to ODIN back to stock
Q - What is ODIN ?
A - Its a firmware flashing software for samsung devices, you can use it to restore you phone back to stock incase you need to return it or if you have softbricked your phone (or whatever else reason), you need to be in download mode for the program to Detect/connect with your device
Q - How do i get into download mode ?
A - Easy way is Using simultaneously holding the Trackpad+volDown+Power. The Fool Proof way is described here in this short post a made for another person having trouble getting into download mode
Q - Where can i find the Odin ROMs ?
A - For the firmware the phone was released with (KD1) Go Here and for the Update that Tmbile began Rolling out on July 21st (KG2) , Go Here
Q - How do i find out what version of android i am on ?
A - Go to Settings>about phone and it tells you under firmware version
Q - i still have questions that you havent answered, Should i make a new thread here ?
A - ... Nope, You can comment below and i can answer your question and add it to the OP if necessary. Or you an make a thread in the general section as we dont yet have a Q&A Section.
Thanks to dbzfanatic for inspiration to make a FAQ for the Sidekick 4G
Hope this is helpful to others ! If you would like/suggest i add anything to this post let me know below.

Sorry ^.^ breh
very hepful faq. much needed imo.
although, i do have a question. i have orange cwm, where can i find the flashable *.zip file for red voodoo cwm?
ive been messing with android for a while, so im not a noob, but i just cant seem to find an answer to this question.
thanks
EDIT: ahhh, nevermind i found the answer. the "reboot into recovery" option in rom manager takes me to orange cwm, but manual button combo takes me to red voodoo cwm. so all is good. thanks
Red CWM is only found in the Bali kernel, as it includes the Voodoo Tweaks, that are only implemented in the Bali kernel. Orange CWM will work fine if you wish to use a stock kernel and CWM.
Another question to add:

What is busybox?
Hi, last night I installed lighting rom and I see this Busybox installer. What's that for? SHould I ionstall it? (noob explanation please) Thanks
Busybox is a system tool kit, that provides a small, but extremely useful version of most system tools. It is smaller than a full blown gnu-utils install, providing core utlities to the system and usr, while saving space, ideal for embedded systems like your phone. The sidekick stock roms use toolbox, which is a completely barebones tool kit, borderline useless (imho).
The system itself is fine with toolbox, and most busybox installs leave toolbox as the primary tool.
Why you as a user would want to install busybox is convienence, as the busybox tools are infinetely better. If you dont muck around with the system (through connectbot or android commander or adb) and dont install any apps tha specifically need busbox (some root required apps might need it) you will never use it.
Tl:dr version, if you dont know what it is, you dont need it yet
This thread is now stickied by request to prevent confusion and duplicates.
A very good FAQ, very informative. Thanks.
Thanks! Great thread...tons of information.

My Sidekick 4g is running very slow. I've started shutting it down at least once a day, but even when it first boots, it runs slow.
It's stock...right now. Trying to figure out which ROM would be best...I am not a heavy user, and I have the 3G turned off, in a feeble attempt to conserve battery life.
Assuming I can get this rooted (looks simple), does anyone have a suggested ROM I should try for speed and good battery life?
Thanks!

Turning 3G (or did you mean 4G?) Off won't really save battery life since your internet runs on the same radio (sprint's 4G wimax uses different radios so having 4G on sucks battery life bad) turning off wifi and gps will help a little. You should definitely flash a custom rom, they will help in both speed and battery life. You can go by date, the newer the ROM is the better because the devs have been able to grow and add more tweaks over time. Currently glorious overdose is your best bet, ICS looks promising but has some bugs to be worked out to make it good for every day use.
I think I got root...not sure how to check.
SuperOneClick didn't work for me, though.
I put the ROM on the SD card, booted into recovery, and it says it is in manual mode. Tried installing the ROM, claims bad fingerprint.
Ugh.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I'm not able to get root access, it keeps getting stuck on step #7, what is strange is that apps that would normally only work on rooted phones, work perfectly well on the sidekick now, even though superoneclick claims that my phone is not rooted. It seems I am semi rooted? Sounds stupid, but those apps work.

Use Titanium Backup to update superuser. If you really have root, then su app is all you are missing. What's step #7?
Hello, I've been using lightning Rom on my sdk4g for a while now and it's giving me a hard time so I want to try something new.
1. Could you recommend me the latest and best Rom for my sidekick?
2. What are the steps to change Roms?
Have a nice day and thanks in advance! :0)
4G Random Bootloop
Hey guys, I rooted and flashed Bali 2.2 and a custom rom thinking it would fix the random boot-loops, but it hasn't. It's not all the time, just sometimes, maybe when the cache is too full? I remember old versions of CM used to have random reboots when the cache was full. But I'm not sure why the phone would just do that. I'm seeing suggestions to flash back to odin, but I'm attempting to avoid that. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Hello everyone. This is my first post, so please be gentle. I've been reading around and I can't seem to find specific answers to my questions so I figured it would be best to make a post. This is my first Android phone and also the first phone I have rooted so I'm trying to be extra careful. I've already received tons of help from other threads in these forums, but as I said I've still got a few questions.
I rooted my SGS4G using SuperOneClick v2.1.1, then proceeded to install CWM ROM Manager as per the instructions I found in many articles online. Once I got that installed I was unable to make backups as it would boot me into the stock recovery menu, which led me here searching for answers. That is when I came across this thread: [RECOVERY]CWM FINAL for the SGS4G After following the instructions I wasn't exactly sure what to do, so I attempted to boot into the "new" recovery menu which ended at an infinite boot logo, which I assumed was a soft brick after reading around a bit.
After thoroughly freaking out about my phone being bricked I looked around a bit more and came across this thread: [GUIDE] Noobs guide to Odin to flash your SGS4G (Windows) Following that thread I was able to install the T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root ROM which restored my soft brick. Once that was installed I installed CWM ROM Manager again thinking the Recovery Menu would be fixed and I could finally make a backup before moving on, but it wasn't. Then I came across this thread: [Odin][Kernel] drhonk's Bali 3.3 for Froyo, Installs CWM!
After installing drhonk's Bali 3.3 for Froyo kernel I was finally able to make a single nandroid backup (and backup my apps using Titanium Backup)! I messed around on the phone for a few days with no issues (other than the Android flickering in the boot logo). Now I am ready to move on to trying out a few ROMS. So, first thing first I said: I need to make another backup. So I entered the Recovery Menu via the CWM ROM Manager and attempted to make another backup, and this is what I get:
E: failed to open /etc..... (I couldn't write fast enough to copy the entire message)
E: unknown volume for path [/sdcard] (10s)
The second of which repeated over and over until it reached 0s and then my phone was rebooted.
TL;DR
- Rooted using SuperOneClick
- Installed ROM Manager and couldn't make a nandroid backup correctly
- Attempted to install CWM FINAL for the SGS4G, which resulted in a soft brick
- Restored using ODIN and installed T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root ROM and drhonk's Bali 3.3 for Froyo kernel
- Cannot make nandroid backups (other than the initial one apparently), Recovery Menu does not seem to be working correctly
- I am not comfortable trying new ROMs until I am able to make backups correctly
Anyway, so here are my questions:
1. What do I need to install to allow me to make nandroid backups correctly? Or is there another app besides CWM ROM Manager that will allow me to do this?
2. I would like to try a few other ROMs, but I when I reach the so-called "Do the mounting stuff" step I am unable to continue as my Recovery Menu isn't working correctly. What do I need to install in order to be able to do complete this step? I have a feeling the answer to #1 will solve #2 as well.
3. I would like to try a few of the GB ROMs (such as Valhalla v1.3.2 or Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 Deodexed + Root), but I am not sure exactly where to go from here. Is the GB Ext4 Starter Pack the way I need to go, or would this way be better? Can I do either of these without a working Recovery Menu?
Thanks in advance for all the help!
Your first mistake was rom manager. It does not work for this phone correctly. Odin one of Dr honks kernels to get cwm recovery. They are in the dev section.

it is fine. if you can wait a day or two, i will make a nice noob guide on getting from stock to a custom rom. i will be sure to link every pertinent thread and be sure to have a little FAQ section. hopefully it will help you.

Thanks, but I figured that out shortly after installing it. What alternative are we supposed to use? Hopefully your noob guide will help.
are you sure you understand? seeing as you mentioned BOTH bali and krylon's cwm, yet you still do not know how to get the custom recovery on the phone. once again, i will write a nice guide for you, so for now, just odin back to stock and give me a day or two. once im out of work, i will take a nap and write this for you.

Apparently I do not understand. I guess I will just wait for your guide. Hopefully it will pick up where the other guides failed (for me anyway).
Edit: After reading around a bit I think I understand where I went wrong. As a noob I was confusing CWM with ROM Manager (after all, they're both made by the same people right? I believe that's what was confusing me ). I have since uninstalled ROM Manager and have booted to the Recovery Menu and successfully made a backup.
I myself have been a member for coming up on one year. And when I originally joined I was modding my Mytouch 3G. Much easier phone to mod and especially with ROM manager. This phone on the other hand requires more attention to detail. It is very important to do your due diligence to research this site for answers before posting. The reason is, all the wonderful and talented folks making all this possible are providing us all these great hacks, cracks, and roms for free. The information is here if you just look for it. Now if you are having trouble understanding the info that is also understandable. I find questions are better received if you show everyone what you have researched and then say what your are confused about.
Enough of the lecture, the end result is that everyone here is really nice and helpful. Here are the 3 links you should save. The Bible lists everything about our phone. Now at this stage in the game unless you really want to get more background on how the phone has evolved from Froyo to GB you won't need to read the Bible. The first thing you will need to do is follow the instructions for Bali 3.3 + CWM. This will provide you with the Red CWM recovery making it possible for you to flash Froyo Roms. Once you have completed this step you can move on to the GB Starter Pack. This guide will prepare your phone with the correct bootloaders it requires to run GB Roms. Once this process has been completed you can flash GB Roms. And if you need a quick list of the roms available just look in the Bible. Hope this helps, just be patient and make sure you understand what you are reading and attempting before doing anything. And if you don't understand a step or a process then come and ask and you'll get better answers and better understanding of what you're actually doing to your phone.

Thanks for the help. I tried to do as much research as I could before posting (as you can see, I've posted two of the three links you suggested in my OP, and I basically keep the Bible open at all times ). It's just the little things that I find confusing, which is why I posted this thread. It's nice to know that from this point I can proceed to the GB Starter Pack and play around with the GB ROMs, but I think I'd like to try a few Froyo ROMs before I take that step Thanks for confirming that!
Sorry for the double post but I have another question.....
I've been reading over FB's GB Ext4 Starter Pack thread and I just wanted to make sure that once you get to the part where you flash your "favorite GB rom" that Valhalla v1.3.2 would be an acceptable ROM to flash there. If not, which ROM should I flash first, then flash Valhalla? Thanks in advance.
Yes, Valhalla would be fine to flash at that point (any version). just as long as you went through each step of the directions first. you'll be fine.
I have a Droid Charge and two days ago I used ODIN 1.82 to install "[email protected]" (Tweaked v2 ROM); however, I just noticed there is an update "[email protected]" which has a couple of folders and not md5 (META -INF and system).
I am a newbie but it was not difficult to used ODIN to install the original md5 file; however, I am stuck trying to install the update. Any tips what tools to use of where I can have the instructions to install the update "[email protected]"?
Thanks.
BTW I have not had any problem so far using the original ROM.

There is a lot of information in the first 3 posts in the Tweaked 2.0 thread that you should read. 3rd post is where you'll find how to use tweaktools. A lot of android phones use CWM and something you should learn. There are a lot of youtube videos that maybe better to watch then trying to read about it.

It took me a while but this is what I have unsuccessfully done:
Downloaded the upgrade for CWM “[email protected]” then I checked its MD5 was correct A2B101E9556BB2BD59F226E25E87D1F6
Placed the above file on my SD card
On my Droid Charge I pressed the POWER button and from the choices I selected RECOVERY
My phone rebooted into:
Android system Recovery (3e)
enter: OK Key. Select: Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe catch partition
checking confirmation -> check (0)
Not need checksum confirmation
already executed!!...
--movi_checking done!...
# MANUAL MODE #
From the above choices I use Vol UP / Vol Down to select “apply update from sdcard”, then pressed the HOME key
Screen changed to:
Android system Recovery (3e)
Choose a package to install:
/mnt/sdcard
../
'[email protected]'
I used the Vol UP / Vol Down, selected the zip file and pressed the HOME key A yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and a green droid icon appeared on the screen. A few seconds later the screen flashed up
I pressed the MENU key and underneath the same caption showed in step (4) above, it was displayed:
-- Install /mnt/sdcard …
Finding update package …
Opening update package
Verifying update package …
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Therefore, I had no other choice to reboot my phone and to come back to the original Tweaked 2.0 release (4.10), which I continue using.
Did I do anything wrong? Please advise.
Thanks

Kind of harsh but I have to agree. No matter how much people say not to use a theme for a different ROM, some idiot says that it works and then people start asking if X theme will work on Y ROM... JUST DON'T DO IT MOST LIKELY IT WILL CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS...

You do realize that on the left-side of the page it shows how many times a user has posted...right?
So let's analyze the situation. That person had posted 1 time. And since you were responding to one of his posts, logic would suggest that that was his first post on here. So "do you make posts like this on purpose?" yes. I'm guessing that he purposefully made his first post on purpose.
Now I know that you have a whopping 37 posts to your name, but you should be a little nicer to the new guys b/c chances are they 1) haven't read every post on here and 2) they came to a forum thinking they could ask questions (I know, such a radical concept isn't it). and 3) they probably didn't realize that the theme was the same from 1.4 to 2.0 hence why they asked the question. </rant>

Did your install of Tweaked2.0 go well?
If not, I was having problems (it would get stuck on the SAMSUNG screen) until I used ODIN to put CWM on there (like you did) but before I flashed the Tweaked2.0 zip file, I had to go to Mounts (in CWM) and tell it to mount /system (after you do that it should then say "unmount /system" where before it simply said "mount system").
Good luck and enjoy!
lol, silly lane, adding fuel to a fire for no reason. I only pop back over to these forums every now and again but I wanted to see what fun stuff was posted here. And anyways, there are nicer ways of telling the newbs how to browse the forums.
Some people are too quick to ask questions before reading, but you see that on a lot of threads. And at least he wasn't asking something crazy stupid like "I just flashed an HTC rom on my Motorola Droid and I know I'm in the wrong forum but could you help me..."

Actually I did. These are the steps I went through:
I used ODIN to go back to the original Verizon ROM my phone had (stock) and then let the phone to update itself (OTA).
Once I got my phone back to "original" I use ODIN to install the latest CWM (Clockwork Recovery Mod) 0302_charge_recovery.tar.md5 which gave me version v5.0.1.7 ( I do not understand why different numbers under the same version).
Once I installed CWM, I did not know what to do with it. I just read somewhere else that I had to have that installed, so I did.
Then as a final step I use again ODIN to install the latest Tweaked v2 ROM “[email protected]”
As of now I am testing the new built. One thing that annoyed me was that there were 22 applications under the Applications menu; they were disorganized in four panes (or windows) so I had to manually rearranged them in alphabetical order, and after that I got rid off two panes, fitting 16 apps per pane/window.
Other than that, I'll continue using the new ROM.
White!
Question about physical buttons not lighting up
In order to limit thread creation I'm hijacking this one due to the general title.
After flashing TWO Charge's with Tweaked 2.0 the row of physical buttons no longer light up. I flashed one back to EP4D (which made them light up again) and then back to Tweaked (which borked them again) already to see what would happen.
Is this part of the tweaks to disable them lighting up? Is there somewhere I can go modify a script and have them light up again?
Thanks
(I'm a Chemical Engineer, I can do anything with cars but when it comes to anything past Odin and CWM, my nerdiness is superceded by this forum. )

This is due to the BLN mod that is included in the rom. See the link below for more info on what BLN does.
It can be disabled through tweaktools if you'd rather have the key backlights act normally (CWM Modifications->BLNModOff)

Thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for.
But my god finding what TweakTools is and how to enter it was difficult. You can't forget that noobs have no idea about some things so it would have been nice to get a link to tonsit's site or a brief explanation of Terminal Emulator, or something. But then again that's not as satisfying as searching on your own.

To be fair - there is a link to all of that in the OP - well, it's the second post, but I figured most would look there as that outlines all the changes that had gone down. Sorry for the confusion - here is the link from that post. Check it out, it ought to be pretty helpful.
Hey there guys,
I'm a noob so I had to post here. Although I've already read the intro guides to installing ROM's. Right now running the CM 11 nightly on my skyrocket. I'm looking for a better rom that has kitkat and I came across the Hellkat/BlueLightning roms. I wanted to install blue lightning but I have a couple questions before I mess anything up (I've read that being fully informed and taking precautions is a must)
So I wanted to know, if I'm installing this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2624875
Can I use the current recovery that I'm using? It's CWM v.6.0.3.7
I read that it's recommended to use a SELinux compatible recovery.
Someone in the thread said to use twrp 2.6.1 but I don't want to change from CWM to twrp.
So can I go ahead and install blue lightning? Do i absolutely HAVE to change to twrp? Or does the newest CWM for my phone work with installing the blue lightning build? (a link would be appreciated!)
Also, a question that I've always had, I don't have to install the first version of the rom right? I can just go ahead and install the zip of the latest build? That's what I've been doing, and when multiple updates come along, I install the latest build and not the builds in between. Can someone clarify this for me? I'm not doing something wrong right?
Thanks in advance for answering my lengthy question and helping me out.
Cheers :good:

Poured your heart out I see. Ill try and clear things up. First of though, you can use either CWM or TWRP recovery's. I actually prefer CWM to. If you are installing Kit Kat though you do need CWM v6.0.3.7 or above! Also you need a Jellybean radio. As for the ROM I am running HellDevs Unofficial CM.11 Built using the Linaro toolchain, Works great! Also No you do not have to install the first versions, Just Wipe data, cache and dalvic. Use any version you want! Hope I helped if you have any more questions id be happy to help.
Thanks!

Ah, so it's not much different from when I was installing the CM 11. Thanks for the quick reply! :victory:
(P.S. how do you close a thread/mark it as answered?)

Actually I do have another question I was hoping you might be able to help me out with. I've heard that MD5 checksum is an important step. I downloaded the blulightning build. But when I copied the md5 checksum they had on the goo page, it didn't match the one on the zip file, or the md5 file that i downloaded (if i click on the md5 number on goo) Is something wrong? Or am i messing something up here?
Can't post this as a reply to the blue lightning thread yet, still under 10 posts :silly:

I usually don't check it. You did it all wrong though. There's a few ways to check the MD5, either through busybox on the phone or a app on the computer. Don't worry I thought the same thing you did when I started. But here's a great thread with more information! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17065076 Personally though if you are sure you download the file correctly you should be good. Also most the time if something is wrong CWM Will tell you and not even let you flash it. Check that thread though it could maybe clear some things up for you.
