[Q] Question about Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey there guys,
I'm a noob so I had to post here. Although I've already read the intro guides to installing ROM's. Right now running the CM 11 nightly on my skyrocket. I'm looking for a better rom that has kitkat and I came across the Hellkat/BlueLightning roms. I wanted to install blue lightning but I have a couple questions before I mess anything up (I've read that being fully informed and taking precautions is a must)
So I wanted to know, if I'm installing this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2624875
Can I use the current recovery that I'm using? It's CWM v.6.0.3.7
I read that it's recommended to use a SELinux compatible recovery.
Someone in the thread said to use twrp 2.6.1 but I don't want to change from CWM to twrp.
So can I go ahead and install blue lightning? Do i absolutely HAVE to change to twrp? Or does the newest CWM for my phone work with installing the blue lightning build? (a link would be appreciated!)
Also, a question that I've always had, I don't have to install the first version of the rom right? I can just go ahead and install the zip of the latest build? That's what I've been doing, and when multiple updates come along, I install the latest build and not the builds in between. Can someone clarify this for me? I'm not doing something wrong right?
Thanks in advance for answering my lengthy question and helping me out.
Cheers :good:

Poured your heart out I see. Ill try and clear things up. First of though, you can use either CWM or TWRP recovery's. I actually prefer CWM to. If you are installing Kit Kat though you do need CWM v6.0.3.7 or above! Also you need a Jellybean radio. As for the ROM I am running HellDevs Unofficial CM.11 Built using the Linaro toolchain, Works great! Also No you do not have to install the first versions, Just Wipe data, cache and dalvic. Use any version you want! Hope I helped if you have any more questions id be happy to help.

Thanks!

Ah, so it's not much different from when I was installing the CM 11. Thanks for the quick reply! :victory:
(P.S. how do you close a thread/mark it as answered?)

Actually I do have another question I was hoping you might be able to help me out with. I've heard that MD5 checksum is an important step. I downloaded the blulightning build. But when I copied the md5 checksum they had on the goo page, it didn't match the one on the zip file, or the md5 file that i downloaded (if i click on the md5 number on goo) Is something wrong? Or am i messing something up here?
Can't post this as a reply to the blue lightning thread yet, still under 10 posts :silly:

I usually don't check it. You did it all wrong though. There's a few ways to check the MD5, either through busybox on the phone or a app on the computer. Don't worry I thought the same thing you did when I started. But here's a great thread with more information! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17065076 Personally though if you are sure you download the file correctly you should be good. Also most the time if something is wrong CWM Will tell you and not even let you flash it. Check that thread though it could maybe clear some things up for you.

Updating ROM with CWM just reverts to menu?

Hey,
I'm trying to install the [ROM] Team Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.2.2 - Moray [9/10/11].
I've got CWM installed (version recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img but also tried latest version from ROM Manager).
Each time i try to install the .zip it get's to opening package and then just exits to the CWM menu?
It's probably a common thing, but couldn't find anything from a search? Anyone got any ideas?
This has been covered many times so take the time to do a search.

I had to thank you Muffycheeks for your excellent answer. I am not sure why you did not at least give an indication about where to find the answer or what the issue is? Lucky this was posted in Q&A and not in the dev thread!
I am new to Xoom (only got it since yesterday) and have managed to get the bootloader unlocked and custom recovery installed. For some reason when I reboot the device the recovery is flash back to 3e (I suppose this has been also debated millions of times but I cannot find it yet...)
I had been able to flash one of the custom roms but it gets stuck in bootscreen. I wiped everything I could think of and followed a couple of advices and still not working.
I am downloading the other rom (as far as I can tell there are only 2 customs with one of them based on the other one) and will see if that works.
Sorry Addicteddddd for highjacking your thread but I have been searching for a while until I found your thread and I thought my issues were over to find the standard helpful XDA answer. Some people might have had their device for years but some other are quite new to this.
K.
EDIT: It seems that one of the recoveries do not advise if a ZIP file is bad and therfore comes back with no message. I suppose this is why this is happening.
I downloaded 3 ZIP files and they are all corrput. Not sure what is happening here but anyway.

I don't know if you used this guide but there is a bit of discussion of some issues regarding cwm recovery versions and some pitfalls while trying to flash.Check it out if you haven't
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
Also, how are you downloading the file? Are you getting the right version? If you are using the R4c v3.2.0.0 it should be called solarnz, not tiamat. The guide has the correct link.

[Q] Rooted EE4 with CWM how to upgrade

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but I just wanted to be sure. I believe I used this thread several months ago (probably June) when I rooted my Charge running EE4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
I haven't touched it since and now I would like to install either another ROM or the stock rooted Gingerbread (most likely another ROM).
My question is can I just download any ROM at this point and drop it on the SD card and then boot into recovery mode and install the ROM? Or could I also use the Clockworkmod ROM Manager app and install the ROM from there? Also do I have to disable the voodoo lagfix when installing these ROMs?
I believe I have the following versions:
ClockworkMod: 3.1.0.1 (according to the ROM Manager app)
CWM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery: 4.0.0.1 (This is what shows when I boot into recovery mode)
Thank you all in advance for your help! And yes I did do some searching before posting this, I just couldn't find something specific to my situation and wanted to be sure.

well..some of the new roms does not have a file that you can install using CWM from your SD card.....some of the roms install a new radio, kernal as well as the rom......and you would need to do this using a program called ODIN......
go into the development forum where you can get a TON of info!
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Sorry thought I did post this in Q+A...thanks for the info, I was looking at Humble 5.0 RC2 mentioned in this post:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293429
Seems like a good ROM and I like the theme. Any thoughts on going with that one? Thanks.

I've no issues with Humble. I've run it before with no trouble. That one in particular is based on EP4P (a slightly older leak). Danalo is supposed to be releasing a final build based on the official EP4 Gingerbread soon, so you might consider waiting for it.
Cool thanks for the info, I'll put up with this updater thing popping up until that comes out...hopefully soon!
One more quick question, just so I have a better understanding of the phone flashing process...are there three parts that have to be flashed?
Kernel
ROM
Recovery
Thanks.
Depends on the Rom. Like this one has everything.

[Q] [CM9] (status 7) installation aborted...

Good day everyone.
I've run into a rather frustrating issue I haven't seen anyone solve, especially for this specific phone.
I'm running CM9-alpha5 right now, and I'm trying to flash one of the newer versions but I keep getting this "(status 7) installation aborted" no matter what ROM I attempt to flash now, even when I try to flash alpha-4 in which I was previously running.
I've made sure the permissions are set to read and write for everyone from within my computer(running pangolin ubuntu right now) and alas, the status remains 7.
Luckily I'm able to still re-flash alpha 5 and use my phone but... what gives?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
I feel I should clarify that I've been downloading these from get.cm like I have been, and transferring them directly to my sd card.
It feels like an odd permission screw-up, but I'm wondering if either that's not it or if there is any easier route to take than backing up and completely formatting my sd..
You didn't mention what recovery you're on, but I'd suggest trying a different one. There have been issues with some of the ROM Manager versions. We've had good success with:

Thanks for the reply! I'm running CWM non-touch v.5.0.2.7 right now. The strangest thing is I came home, downloaded the 6-20 Nightly, and flashed it with success! so I guess the previous point is kind of null now, but I still feel I should update my CWM. Do you have any suggestions as to how I should go about updating from my old non-touch to the new touch? Thanks again for the reply!

[Q] Updating to kitkat

I tried updating android 4.4.2 KitKat based CM11 ROM but get stuck at the boot logo after the hole updating process, try to wipe the phone after installation multiple times, but nothing work.

Stickies are posts that are generally considered extremely useful so they get "stuck" at the top of the list in the forums, so they are seen first and can resolve peoples questions without much looking. Like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1785999 . From personal experience I'd recommend using PhilZ touch recovery. It's done the trick for me so far. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557024
Thanx Cyndar, tried with philz touch, but the same.. still loops... and cant find anything in the stickies. I think to just stay with 4.3
so... who needs google now?
Thanx again

imo stay with stock or whatever you got working until you read some more, youre a brick waiting to happen or a newb with questions that have been repeatedly answered.

If you are trying the nightly ROMs, they have a known issue loading for the past few releases. Go back and find a Jan20-something nightly and give that a shot. Again...there are known boot loop issues with the nightly ROMs starting Feb1.

1. Download UCMC1 modem and install it
2. Go into CWM Philz thread and use Odin to install it
3. Flash your rom.
I did it with AOSB (amazing work) but had problems with PA GAPPS flashing, so i took the gapps zip from the Avatar rom and it's been working extremely nicely. As an added touch by suggestion from another user, I flashed the Uber Kernal on top of it after.
But like the others said, seriously, slow down and read the instructions rather than jumping around and accidentally screwing something up

[Q] [Question][//Solution] Reverting from Oxygen OS to CM11 using CM Installer

I'm just curious and haven't browsed XDA for a while. My curiosity got me to the point of posting in G+ and Twitter about CM installer reverting Oxygen OS to CM11. So many people installed Oxygen OS and because of missing features, they want to revert back to CM. I manually flash and root my devices. I know about CM installer which installs a stable version on a device without you doing anything but I've never used it. My question is, can a CM installer be used to revert back to CM11 without any issues. I don't have a problem flashing Oxygen or reverting or even bricking my device, it's just that I'm curious. If somebody could answer this, it will help a lot of newbies and others who are afraid of bricking their device or doesn't feel safe to go with the hand on method of flashing, fastboot techniques etc... and clear my curiosity too.
You can't just use CM Installer. We're already discussing this here:

If you read up on how to downgrade from OxygenOS or even CM12, you'll find out why you can't just reflash CM11 with CM Installer. Both O2OS and CM12 flash a new modem that won't work with CM11. The modem has to be reverted manually.

Anything can be done by a newbie willing to read, and that's how one goes from being a newb to becoming proficient. That's why I don't like tools and video tutorials--more often than not, they leave people ignorant.
Yes, it will bootloop because the Lollipop modem doesn't play nice with CM11/11s.

I agree... I don't like tools either.. But I have seen people asking on FB if the service center can do an upgrade for them... this installer if it properly works could help those guys... does the installer wipes everything and installs them from scratch, the modems too, I meant. I haven't used it, that's why...
I'm not getting proper answers here or anywhere.. sorry guys... It's already understood that Oxygen and CM12 flashes a new modem, but when the installer flashes a stable version, will it remove or wipe everything and start from scratch? Oxygen OS may be a different thing, if and when CM12 arrives, which is going to be a stable one, can the installer be used to switch...?
