Package access helper draining battery? - General Questions and Answers

Hi, i have a problem with my SGS2.
A system app called package access helper is draining up my battery and it eats up the cpu, whenever the process is ongoing, my phone gets seriously hot as it clocks my phone to 1.2ghz straight up.
If i force close it, the phone reboots itself. The process only starts up when i install any app and it dosent close on its own. Can anyone help me with this issue? Tried wiping phone, installing new roms and different kernels but they all share this stupid package access helper which i cant get rid of!

It seems this service app has something to do with installing and uninstalling apps, it's just part of Android.
So what ROM or kernel you put on your phone, you just can't get rid of it as long as you use Android.
I have the same problem with VPNdialogs, it appears when I use VPN, and it won't exit even I turn VPN off. Yesterday I found that this stupid service drained my battery with 26% battery life.
So why should those apps remain running even we exit the services? Just to get us to the initial state of those apps we use? That's insane.

delete DefaultContainerService.apk on system/app and preload folder
you can delete by root rxplorer app

Battery

I know I've made a few posts about this in the past, but now I've learned a few things since then.
I know the battery isn't the greatest on the infuse (no rom that I'm using atm..) but would like to get the most juice out of my device that I can. I have root access and currently use the apps "battery calibration" and "no-frills CPU control" which I set my cpu at a relatively low frequency to help keep juice.
My phone is drained throughout my day, even without use. I believe it primarily happens because my data (mobile network) consumes it. I know apps such as "juice defender" are great at reducing idle drainage because it shuts off your network connection while in idle to save battery. However, I have used this application in the past and after a few days of use, it shuts off my mobile connection altogether.
My question is, if I were to use this application again and my mobile network were to malfunction, would I be able to change my apn to regain my network connection? In the past I had to reset my phone to regain connection, which isn't really worth using if that's the only solution.
Or are there any other battery saver apps worth using??
Thanks

A bit more information is needed before a specific course of action can be recommended. How much battery life are you using in an average 24 hour period? Also, what version of Juice Defender(beta, free, plus, ultimate) are you using, and what specific settings are you utilizing. It is a very customizable program after all. You might look into Battery Indicator Pro, which estimates your total remaining battery life based on your level of usage. I would also recommend CPU spy, which, if your device is rooted, will show the percentages that your device is running at various CPU levels.
If you turn off all the locational stuff, turn off 'update my current location' in Navigator, and set your CPU gov to conservative, you might get better battery life. I've not had any lasting luck with any of the battery saving apps. In the end, I decided to buy a couple of Anker batteries from Amazon just in case I have a bad battery day... Also some of the battery saving mods work, but I'm not sure about applying them to ICS and JB ROMS. I haven't tried!
Battery life is what you make of it..
Anything running in the background will drain the battery.. email constantly checking for new messages, twitter, Facebook, GPS, WiFi if no connection is found, etc..
Anything that makes the phone process even while the screen is off is going to kill a battery..
What ROM are you using? Some ROMs have better life than others..
How much are you actually using the phone?
What's the brightness set at?
Have you tried changing the processor and slowed it down?
Lots of information that is missing is helpful..
Its powered by Jellybeaned AOKP!

Some have good luck with these, others don’t. I prefer to try to adjust settings myself.

How about putting a widget on your homescreen to toggle data on/off. Keep it on only when you need it. I go a step further, I use Tasker to automatically turn my data off every time my screen times out (because that means I’m not using it... I can restart my data later with my widget when I need it). Maybe that’s extreme, but I’m not just watching my battery.. I’m managing my limited data plan.
My phone is drained throughout my day, even without use.

It may be that you have wakelocks keeping your phone awake when it’s supposed to sleep. One way to see this is (in GB or above) Settings / About-Phone / Battery Use...then click on the small graph at the top... should expand it to a large graph with traces along the bottom including Awake and Screen On. If you have long periods of time where phone is awake while screen is off, that’s a wakelock problem. A good program to troubleshoot that is Better Battery Stats. If nothing else, follow the instructions in the first post in the BBS thread linked below, and then post a dump to the end of that BBS thread (the developer and a lot of other knowledgeable people follow that thread and will help you interpret results):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Thru use of BBS, I found that Google Maps is one that was keeping mine awake and I think someone else on the forum reported the same. If that program (Maps) is causing problems, you can disable it from auto-starting on boot using Gemini Manager. It will still be available when you need it, just take a few seconds longer to load the first time after boot. Then need to reboot to stop it from causing wakelocks after use (there may be other easier ways, but this works for me).
Another program (Power Tutor) was helpful to me to see programs that were consuming unusual amount of battery although not necessarily thru wakelocks. In my case Dolphin Browser HD was occasionally drawing very high power even when that program was not actively in use.

Just to provide more details on my previous post (not sure if it's answering your question):
I followed instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29420959&postcount=7059
In particular, I installed the free program "Gemini Apps Manager". That allows you to stop programs from auto-loading at boot.
So I used the program to stopp Google Maps from auto-loading at boot.
That stopped a large chunk of my wakelocks, as long as I don't manually launch Google Maps.
If I do manually Google Maps, then those wakelocks come back, and to get rid of them I have to reboot.
I don't use Maps that often (only when I go on trips), so it's not a big problem for me to reboot when I'm finished with my trip to help keep my battery use low.
It may also be possible to kill it from the list of applications at Settings/Applications/ManageApplications and killing botht the application and the process...but I'm not sure if it will stay killed that way... haven't tried. I know some applications have hooks that make it hard to get rid of them once they're launched.
But (if you haven't already), I think it's a good idea to use BBS to find out what programs are causing problems on your phone. You may have other apps causing lot bigger problems than Maps. And it certainly may be the case that a program that acts up on one phone can be fine on another phone due to differences in the way the user configures the application settings and the phone settings (along with other possible differences in application version, ROM used, etc etc).

Thanks for your detail explanation. My main question was how can close the app without restarting? i feel my major battery drain is from dolphin browser, befor dolphin i used opera, even that has the same problem. Most of the time, if I dont open dolphin, my phone battery is good, but once I open it, it drains battery. So i am looking for soemthing simple which does, without rebooting the device.
Any way thanks for your help.

Excessive Battery Drain on Airplane Mode

My Infuse 4G is always on Airplane Mode with Wifi turned on. I use it as a secondary device and like an iPod Touch/Media Player. However, even if Airplane Mode is on, the number one drainer of battery is Cell Standby at like 60-70%. Also, the phone never enters deep sleep and Android OS constantly keeps the device awake. As a result, from a 100%, the phone is dead within 8 hours. There has got to be some sort of fix for this. I'm running the latest Beanstalk 4.4.285.
P.S. I have entered AppOpps and denied the permissions to wake up and stay awake to the following apps: Google Search, Google Play Services and Android System.

Try rebooting. A custom launcher may be a culprit! Apex Nova Go are reliable! Do a clean flash again!
There must be an app which is running in background! Try deleting a recently installed app, try clearing cache of google+. Try uninstalling anti viruses which are useless in a phone. Install an app called Greenify in Play Store. Greenify most of your installed apps with it. It really boost battery life.
Change governor in performance to either Interactive or OnDemand.
And if you want, go into phone info (by dialing *#*#4636*#*#) scroll down to the button that says turn radio off, and that keeps the cell radio off.

Some apps are not properly closed out when you exited it. I had to force close some of them. Not sure if this is happening with other people. Go into: Settings > Applications > Manage applications or Running services open apps that you recently open/closed. If Force stop light up it mean the app still running. I'm aware that some apps remain running due to user setup for it to check for update. The app I'm referring to shouldn't since update is turned off or in manual update mode.

I have pretty much run out of options. I have no idea why my battery drains even in airplane mode. Supposedly it is because of "cell standby".
EDIT: If I can solve this issue, I can put my Infuse to good use again. Unfortunately, I can't use a phone for anything if its battery dies in 8 hours while idling in airplane mode.

Same here~ i just bought an 3.7V 3500mAh Li-ion extended battery off of amazon for under $10 and since the original is 1750 mAh battery im hoping it is going to do some noticable good. Nonetheless, the problem still remains so please if you (or anyone) should discover any breakthroughs than SHARE with us too... please! Thank you kindly <3
Try rebooting, it will help. Try force stop and disable the both "Google Search" apps in app manager (first maybe called "Google App" if you updated it). Guys please keep me updated with this because I'm so confused. It is so stupid and without any kind of tiny logic for the battery drain on AIRPLANE mode that turns off all radios and waves............

Asus Zenfone 5 - A501CG - Battery Optimisation

Dear All,
I'm writing this simple trick or guide to help all Zenfone 5 Users- Indian Version to use the phone effectively, with battery optimisation, so that we can get maximum juice out of the battery, without any external tweaks or battery savings app.....Atleast I'm getting a good battery life out these optimisations.
Neither ME or XDA is not responsible for any issues in your phone after you try this or if you brick your phone(dont worry, you cant just brick your phone by optimising battery).. These are just tips... use it as your wish... but please know what you are doing or please ask before doing anything...
Root is a must!!!!!
Apps needed: App Ops Settings, Battery Calibration(Pls. download from playstore)
First: Battery Calibration:
Root is a must for this app. Pls don't try on non rooted phones, it will not work!!!. Once you have installed this app, don't open it yet... Charge your phone to 100% or till the lights turn to green. Then open this app, grant root access and then click "Calibrate Battery"
Once you have done this, you need to use the phone without charging till 2% and then recharge it fully again.. Do this for 2 to 3 times, we will get very good battery backup and efficient battery...(This just deletes, the battery_stats file from the system, so that a new one will be created fresh with the new battery status.
Second: App Ops Settings
You need root for this app, since it has to detect the system apps which are running in the background and trying to use services in the background. After instaling this app, open the app, navigate to each tab, which shows location, personal, device, settings, etc and carefully read through apps, open one by one and disable the unwanted services from the app which are always running in background... this will save battery from restarting the services everytime and trying to refresh.
Also, you need to be carefull while selecting system apps, since some apps like gallery, settings, camera will also be there in the list trying to run or refresh background services.
Additionally, I have installed titanium backup and frozen all asus inbuilt apps and using it with combination of greenify... so, I'm getting 2 days of battery backup with only 2G...
I hope these tricks will help some users to get maximum juice out of the battery...:good:
Helping with rooting process?
I've purchased this phone (A501CG) last week and updated to KitKat 4.4.2. As we all faced the battery problem, I tried to root my phone.
I've tried so many apps and method but the rooting failed.
Can you make a post regarding how to root Asus Zenfone 5 (A501CG).
Thank you.
p.s.: I really want to root and REMOVE MOST OF THE ASUS APP....

Battery Drain?

Here are some of my GSAM stats on this Imgur link. I am worried I am dealing with lousy battery life and have to charge my phone once a day mid-day to get anything done. I was expecting 5-6 SOT and decent stand by battery life with Doze. Even with Airplane Mode and Wi-Fi, my phone's battery life drains a bit too. I did a cache wipe and dalvik cache wipe too.
I have the July Patch with stock T-Mobile software: Baseband G930TUVU3APG1
https://imgur.com/a/z11jw
Do I need to do a factory data reset of some sorts? Or wait for a new update, even though T-Mobile is taking their merry ole time with the August patch?
I had really bad, terrible battery life when i first got this week couple weeks back until i looked into it.
First i installed root on the phone, and started to uninstall unnecessary programs and bloatware that came with the phone. If you decide to install root, PLEASE follow the instructions to a point. I forgot to disable manual security updates and one week later, ran into the famous bootloop and had to start all over. Oh well, lesson learned and i learned
After i uninstalled several programs, i still noticed that i had better battery life but not great. I thought maybe it was my old house the reception "pinging" was the cause of it. After searching around, i was told to install "Wakelock Detector" App from the Play Store.
What this App does is that it will tell you which app that are installed on your phone, are causing to "wakeup" your device either by pinging out, or waking up the screen or whatever. After running the program and after a day of it surveying my phone, it found several programs being the cause. Mainly my email App. It was waking up the device, something like 43 times a day. After looking around the settings of the App, i had it setup to check for emails every 5 minutes. After adjusting several other programs, battery life is great.
Just today, i took my phone off the charger at 9am and here it is 10:43pm and my battery is sitting at 55% battery with medium use today.
Also look into system settings such as Account sync options, wifi searching and whatnot.
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask away. I love to help out

You could always use Debloater 3.90 to disable certain apps from running. Although this wont unistalled the apps nor will it free up any space, it will prevent them from running.
Did you check into the settings that I mentioned within the System settings or download Wakelock Detector? This will help you figure out and pin point the issue.

I tried a few times in the past, but I always end up disabling stuff and it causes a headache. I only want to disable stuff like DT Ignite and T-Mobile anyways. I'll play with the settings. Didn't download the wake lock detector since it said root was better.

Two good guides from the main Samsung S7 are located here :
Debloater - Safe Apps to Disable
Battery Life Discussion
Although i wouldn't disable all the apps that the thread suggests, i did use it as a guide. Most of Tmobile and useless Apps are safe to delete.
There is a way to run WakeLock Detector without root but you have to be familiar running command prompts / ADB lines. I can walk you through it if you are interested. Not too complicated, but can be if you have never did it before.

Any way to monitor apps that is no longer running in the background then restart it? (phone rooted)

I have used systemizer for the app and it will still stop running from time to time (as evident in output of the command 'ps -ef').
Maybe via cron by following something like this https://stackoverflow.com/questions/16747880/how-to-use-crontab-in-android ?
In my case the package that I want to keep alive all the time is com.surfshark.vpnclient.android . When it stops running in the background, it won't detect network status and enable VPN whenever necessary.
But even after setting autostart to on, exclude this app from battery optimization, and systemizing the app, it still fails to restart itself sometimes after it gets killed.
Any help appreciated !
