When I first got my Gs2 LTE and before I rooted it etc. I connected with Kies on my PC. part of the process involved d/ling the proper drivers. At least it'll let you know if the connection is working.

Did I download the proper drivers? And are these the phone drivers or for my PC?

NO. It's kies that you load onto your PC. (It takes a while for it to install itself). I can't remember all the steps but it guides you. Then you connect up via USB and away you go.

If you can connect with Kies then you have the right drivers. You've got USB debugging enabled in settings/developer options. Now when you connect to the pc usb port you should get a popup on the status bar pull that down and hit turn on USB storage. That should be all you need.
OH, I forgot you're still on Gingerbread and unrooted ..is that right?

Sounds familiar. Have you installed busy box?
Roms are all phone model dependent. I'm using SkyIcs.

I just got a new Win7 Pc and now when I try to connect my Xoom to it it says Unknown MPT device. I tried installing the drivers to no avail. I didnt have this problem on XP. I am running stock ICS on my WiFi Xoom. Any ideas?
Where did you get these drivers from? Try the ones directly from Motorola.
You could drive removing the current drivers and SW. Try just using the device then runnign the moto install for those drivers. Make sure USB is enabled correctly on the tablet too. Is it charging from the usb connection? You could try a different port it shoudl charge regardless.

Xoom doesn't charge via USB..
I am using the drivers and software directly from Motorola. I have tried it with USB debugging on and off. I have tried switching it from MTP to PTP on the Xoom and still the same results.

Go into device manager and see what's up. Make sure xoom is plugged in beforehand. Right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager.
If there are no errors (!) to do with the xoom, then some form of driver is installed. Manually delete these by right-clicking on them.
Then take out xoom, and put it back in. Win7 should automatically find the MTP drivers.

Seems like u have hardware related issue, I would suggest to get it checked by SSC.
But before u give ur phone, make sure u have stock rom with stock unrooted kernel. U dnt have cwm recovery and ur download counter must be 0.

MTP Initialization issue
Hi All,
I'm new to use Galaxy R the same model. I don't know the issue i'm facing is directly related to MTP Initializer or not but the issue i'm facing is I'm not able to access the subdirectory and file system of my phone in PC. At initial When I connect my mobile to PC I was able to access the files and at that time MTP initializer message never appeared as notification but from few days ago whenever i connect my mobile to PC i'm getting notification of MTP initializer to my mobile and I'm not able to access subdirectories and files(music, video, photo) present in mobile although the root folders are appearing.
I thought this might be an MTP issue so posting this in this thread. Please help me how can I access(Copy/past/delete to/from PC) my all files.
firstSmartPhoneUser,
Try to access your files using USB mass storage. Go to Settings-Wireless and network-USB utilities, and click "Connect storage to PC" button. Then connect USB cable and tap "Connect USB storage". If that doesn't help, you can try to connect wirelessly with "Kies air" app, or something else, like MyPhoneExplorer (this app needs to be installed both on the phone and on PC).

Try with "Kies Air" app, this one is for wirelles connecting via yours modem.
Have you activated an option titled "fast charge" somewhere? you can`t have that on and access your files from your pc at the same time. It happened to me once
Maybe you USB Socket is failed. I think it's hardware issue, like mine.
usb debugging mode?
Install the drivers from Kies, it's located in the Kies directory somewhere

Chances are it is a driver issue with the computer. Does it appear on another computer with the same cable?
Uninstall old drivers and then re-install the Nexus 5 drivers https://dl-ssl.google.com//android/repository/latest_usb_driver_windows.zip

Go to "Settings", then "Storage". Click on menu in the upper right side of the screen, the three small squares, and “USB Computer Connection” drop down should show. If it does then change to PTP and see if the computer can see it.
If you don't get the "USB Computer Connection" drop down then its probably the USB drivers OR the cable!
I'd uninstall drivers from the computer by connecting phone to the computer right clicking on computer icon, choose manage, device manager, under usb you should see nexus 5 or unknown(with a yellow triangle). Right click and uninstall. Reboot computer and install the drivers listed on googles website for the nexus 5. You may have to just connect you device to the computer and let it try to install then right click Nexus 5 or Unknown again and choose update drivers and browse to the unzipped downloaded usb drivers.
If that doesn't work then i'd buy a replacement usb cable. I got so many of these laying around did you try this yet?
Are you running stock or a rom? Might be something with a rom. I remember having a similar issue several years ago with this, i'm pretty sure it was a driver issue, possibly a rom. Heck the micro usb connection on your phone could be full of dust and junk and isn't making a connection.

I can see “USB Computer Connection”, changing to PTP doesn't help.
Tried 4 different cables and 3 different laptops, no luck
Running stock ROM installed from Nexus Root Toolkit
In fastboot mode, device manager shows "Android Device" > Google Nexus 4 BootLoader Interface".
Any suggestions on what to do next?

2-take a complete backup of your phone and try some other rom instead of one you are using
3-also update your windows too
4-full wipe your internal partition before installing new rom
5-try some other kernel

Try to turn on usb debugging from developer options. See what happens. If it fails then probably your usb connnection somehow got stuck in charge only mode. In that case you will need to force mtp through commandline. Just see what happens after you try to turn on debugging first.
Additional note: this is pretty basic stuff but still worth mentioning. What happens when you try to select usb options type from inside storage settings? Does the settings option open up? Is mtp selected over there?

You can force mtp through command line only if you have root access. Are you rooted?
Since mtp is already selected in the connection type list, the problem is probably due to a bad driver structure. Disconnect your device from PC. Remove all the drivers and kies software from your pc. Reboot and connect phone. Try to see if the windows driver works out not. I am guessing you are on windows 7, right?

Ive tried that as well. Windows drivers also couldnt install MTP. Im not rooted. How did this even happen? I mean It was fine yesterday.
You can try these two solutions in their order and report back.
1) On your phone, go to Security -> Device administration->Device adminstrators. Check if there are any app with admin privileges, you have to deactivate them and see if MTP access works.
2) Connect your phone, swipe ur top menu down & tap USB PC connection settings, switch from MTP to PTP. Let driver's install. Now, go to the safely remove & eject media & eject your phone, when it says its safe to remove. Just switch your PTP back to MTP, see if the drivers install successfully then.
