I have opened a couple of threads with a similar name, but none had the same issue.
My Sensation XE, with original Sense simply won't find my wifi network that I created on my laptop.
I know, pretty common problem. But...
An old SonyEricsson connected to the same network without any problem whatsoever. My old Legend with Cyanogenmod can connect as well. A Desire S with Sense couldn't connect either.
Is it something Sense-related ?
I tried another network (under both W7 and Ubuntu), but it won't connect.
btw, internet pass-trough won't connect either.
Need more information to offer any help. Are you S-off or HTC Dev unlocked? And also what ROM are you running.
I'm not sure if this helps at all, but I think the Wi-Fi hotspot from laptops are some different server type. Like our phones use Ad-Hoc and laptop hotspot uses some different method and some phones can't detect that. I'm not sure thought, just a random thought.

I have been reading this site through out regarding common HTC problems and came across WIFI issue with HTC.
History:
I got this linksys router and i get connected through my laptop(s) quite easily by just entering the passkey (current security is WPA-PERSONAL) also, i have been using e72 before and it uses to get connected flawlessly too.
Currenlty:
I bought this HTC desire (awesome mobile) but i am unable to connect to my home wifi. I tried connecting to another secured network and by just entering the passkey it got connected for experimenting more i tried connecting to hotspot (nexus one froyo) through open connection which worked as well quite easily. It is just my home router which is giving trouble to me on my desire whereas i tried to make it work by changing different settings and even by making it open source but all in vain.
If someone has any idea how i can get it connected to linksys with settings change (any settings which can wrk on HTC) then it will be a big relief for me as this is really not working well for me
I am having the exact same problem and I have the same setup. Our problems are eerily similar. Even I owned an E72 earlier and now the HTC Desire. Pretty sure it is something to do with the Router. I jst upgraded the firmware today to the latest build, but still having the same problem. I think its probably the hardware version of the WRT54G. The version 7 is the only one having an Atheros chip. All others have a broadcom chip.
Try changing the security settings in the router to none. I used to own the 54G router. I upgraded to the E3000. My dad has the evo and we now get wireless n service.
I have a HTC Hero rooted and is running Wireless Tether. The signal can be picked up by my laptop and can be used without a problem - this means the Wireless Tether application is running without a problem.
However my Inspire cannot pick up the signal. Does anyone know why? The Inspire is rooted and has CoreDroid7 (this should be irrelevant) and can pick up all other wireless signals around the house/in the neighborhood. When I manually add it, it says "not in range, remembered"
is it a hardware limitation where the hero is broadcasting at a b/g/n spectrum?
thanks in advance
edit1: the hero is emitting wireless b signal, so the inspire should pick it up
edit2: i ran wireless tether on the inspire just for kicks and the hero picked it up (that means i know how to configure the app - which is pretty brainless... just pick default options and change the SSID)
edit3: an iphone 4 was able to pick up the hero's SSID and connect. this seem to be more of an inspire problem
last edit: i installed barnacle wifi tether on the hero and face the same problem. therefore its safe to conclude my inspire is issue. my inspire is coredroid7 with:
s-off
hboot 0.85.0019
micop-0438
radio 26.09.04.11_m2
emmc boot
even if you dont have an idea whats going on, can someone who has two andriod phones do a quick test?
what are other good radios/ril for coredroid7 other than the 3 listed under the coredroid thread? i checked the radio thread and there was no official mention of anything (except user comment on the radio that i am using works).
is it my problem bad radio/ril?
Edit: most likely not bad radio
Someone answered on the hero forum that hero only broadcasts ad hoc. So the question is does the ROM I use support ad hoc?

Installed WiFi manager... The ssid showed up and said Android does not support ad hoc or ibss. Is there a solution around this problem?

I had the same problem a month or so ago where my Inspire wouldn't pick up ad-hoc networks. Did some googling and found a Desire HD thread with people wanting ad-hoc support which lead me to this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866676
Flash that. (The ADHOC.v2.zip) and then reboot and you should have ad-hoc support.
I haven't used this in over a month but ad-hoc networks would show up with an * next to the network name.
worked like a charm. thanks!
Hello,
since the last FOTA update from HTC to 1.45.403 (Android 2.3.4) I can no longer connect WLAN devices to the internet via WiFi-Hotspot on my HTC Sensation!
Before that update it worked.
The devices (tried it out with a Samsung TV and the original WiFi-stick connected and a WD multimedia box, both worked flawlessly before) successfully find the Sensation's AP, successfully connect to it and also the DHCP test succeeds.
However no internet connection then works.
Did anyone of you experience the same?
Could it be that this FOTA update sent by HTC now requires some software token to be sent by your mobile operator enabling WiFi tethering, hence defaulting tethering via firmware to "disable"?
Mobile operators do not like tethering, but they cannot detect (and consequently block) it easily - unless (just my speculation, no idea if this is the reason, why it won't work anymore) HTC would change WiFi tethering and internet sharing via 3G to default off on software level.
I have to mention that I have an unbranded HTC Sensation without any operator-specific software and the update did not come from the operator but from HTC.
(Or at least that's what I saw.)
Any advice ?
Thanks in advance.
Correction:
Software version is: 1.45.401.3
Have you tried using different security settings for the WiFi hotspott? Go to settings\wireless & networks\Portable WiFi hotspot settings. You have three settings WEP 128, WAP (TKIP), and WPA2 (AES). Mine is set to WPA2 (AES).
Problem is that it does not even work with security settings switched off
I really feel lost.
Could it be that other apps interfere?
But I'd rather doubt.
If you are using the WiFi Hotspot app that came preinstalled on the sensation from tmobile and you dont have a "Tethering Data Plan" they will eventually figure you out and block the app from working.... I found this out myself and had to go ask the nice lady at the Tmobile store why it happened... and that's why.
I can verify that at a certain point of data usage tmous will cut off wifi tethering. They can tell the data is being shared n want u to pay monthly for the service. Found out from a Friend who is a tmo employee.
Although I'm still tethering free for the time being..

Mine does that too now, any way around it
I could be off on this, I work at TMO and I know the Amaze and GSII shipped with the ''latest'' SIM cards, which we were told had to be used for WiFi calling to work correctly, but oddly enough thats when I noticed tethering quit working on all out demo's
Works flawlessly with CM7 for me.
Actually today and yesterday works just fine for me.... so i dont know why it did the one day but no problems now..... wierd
my branded sensation stopped wifi tethering 2 days ago and i just tried and its is working now... Kinda weird i gurss . . Maybe it was because i used 5.46gb of data this month....?

I would like to know if there is any way I can have my WiFi internet on my MT4GS,without my Sim card in the phone .Probably just surfing the net or using "whats app". I have tried and my cell doesn't connect to the WiFi router at all.Can someone advise on settling this matter ? My phone is unlocked and rooted.I haven't taken the update,so I'm still on the stock ROM.
I used my old windows touch pro 1 cell and it connects to the WiFi router without Sim card.So what can I do to get the WiFi internet on my MT4GS?
You should just have it.
I have two of these devices - one on T-Mobile, the other bought aftermarket out of plan. No sim card, yet I connect to wifi everywhere, even use it as a wifi bridge to my router for a desktop in my home.
Just go into settings, wireless settings, then turn on wifi and tap 'wifi settings' underneath it. You should see your network in the list, just tap it and enter a password if necessary.
Done.
This doesn't work for you?
Sim card has nothing to do with wifi, only cellular.
Maybe the fact that your phone is rooted. But I don't know my rooted cliq is rooted an connects to WiFi fine...

Could be, my buddy has a stock mytouch and he can't get on wifi without a sim either..

I don't think so - I just got it back from HTC and it's not rooted yet, still stock the same way I shipped it out to them. Gets on wifi fine with no sim card.
It does have an S-OFF bootloader, but I don't see how that would matter.
I do find this curious.
What exactly happens when you try to connect to a wifi network?
Does it even see the wifi networks?
Where does the ability to connect fail?
You should be able to connect. It'll have that option at the HTC setup wizard.

Says scanning ,then tries to acquire ip address then it disconnects and starts all over with the same result.Secondly I remembered the last two programs that were causing me problems in installing and uninstalling were Bloater and Busybox ,before my WiFi went haywire.I gave up trying and hence I was preparing to send my cell back to HTC, since it was still within the warranty period.I unrootted my cell and now my WiFi works again. So i really can't say exactly what caused this malfunction as yet .Thank you guys, for such quick responses. This really makes me feel proud to be part of an outstanding group of people here, and as whole, part of xda-developers.I thank you all for your help an assistance.Hopefully this information might help someone else someday.
Maybe it's your router

No my girlfriend, has the same phone with me and it connected .Had tried another router and it still didn't connect.
I do it all th time with several brands of phones. I have had problems the constanly connecting and reconnecting when there are too many devices around at the same time.
Sometimes it is the router and internet going through "spells".

Yes, "innerwebs" with wifi works without a sim card.
My g2 AND my other 4g slide both connect to my router without a sim in them.
But they are rooted with different roms so......
Hi,
Firstly I have read similar threads for other mobiles, most notably the One X but the solutions there don't translate to my One S. i.e. the menu structures explained and headings given are not a match to mine with no obvious, to me, , alternatives.
There was also a mention of wifi tethering with a link but no description. I assume this is DL'd directly to the phone and then...?
Mine is currently running Android 4.1.1 provided by Vodafone Spain (my country), which is where the problem started. (i.e. all was well before)
The mobile shows the laptop (Dell running WinXPpro) is connected and the laptop also says it's connected to the HTC HotSpot.
However, no internet is availaible. The One S and the Dell work perfectly on other wifi networks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
As a footnote, I will soon be changing to Jazztel Spain (provided via Orange Spain network), so if a solution is known for that system as well/instead I can wait/resort when the changeover happens.
TIA
T-Mobile is pretty picky about Hotspot. If you have less than 5GB 4G Unlimited, it doesn't work.
Or else, there's really somethin' wrong.

Try using your laptop when the phones screen is on. On some version of the software wifi wasn't working when the screen was off.
Many thanks for the replies folks.
In the end the answer to my problem was extremely simple.
All I had to do was change the hotspot name and password on the HTC and just follow suit on the PCs to connect. I guess, in hindsight, I really should have tried that!
Apparently (according to Vodafone tech. dept in Spain) the upgrade has be known corrupt the above data.
Easy when you know how, as always.
