Stock 2.3.6 with no changes to or updates in settings or installed software and I have been taking pretty good care of the battery in a 5 ½ month old Atrix 2 directly from Motorola and not previously used.
Several days ago battery drain when in standby when from approximately 0.5% per hour to 2.5 to 3% per hour. I did the following, although not necessarily in the order listed:
Bench tested battery at a battery shop – no problem found.
Verified settings and software. Cannot find anything that appears to be draining power, initiating communications, etc.
Pulled battery.
Hard data reset and tested drain rate with no additional software and had same problem as when normal software was installed.
Several deep cycles from 3% or less to full charge. In all cases mV appear in normal range of about 3542 mV at 3% to 4347 mV at 100%, again per Circle Battery Widget.
Broke down and called Motorola and although they tried to be more helpful than normal, the only suggestion that they could offer was to try another battery, which I do not currently possess and AT&T would not allow a short term lending even had they had one available.
99% of all charging is via stock wall charger, spot use of car adapter with appropriate specs when using GPS.
Typically recharge starting in range of 5-15% and charge to 100% as indicated by Circle Battery Widget.
Battery usage in standby shows about an even split between Cell Standby, Phone Idle and Bluetooth each about 32% of usage when in standby. Have always left Bluetooth on 24/7 except when charging and battery drain was only about 0.5% per hour. I even tested for several hours with bluetooth off and this did not affect the rapid drain.
Contacts are clean.
I even use Motorola USB cables both from my PC for data transfer and also with the wall charger.
No exposure to excessive heat/cold.
If anyone has any thoughts, I would greatly appreciate any help. Otherwise my next steps are to call Motorola back Sunday morning (U.S. time zones) and probably order an OEM battery from a reputable source allowing for U.S. holiday on Monday. Unsure how Motorola will treat this as warranty since 1) this phone is a replacement for Atrix 4G problems whose warranty would be expired, and, 2) batteries have weak warranty coverage anyway since so much of that is beyond their control.

My battery life has gotten a lot shorter (and cell reception worse). Most of my 'battery usage' is coming from cell stand-by.

How long are you leaving the A2 on the charger? MTL you may have "overcharged" the battery, overloading the memory in the battery itself, therefore resulting in less usage time from a "fully charged" battery.
Typically, as a sales rep, I recommend my customers only charge their phone for the full 4-8 hours, when it is the FIRST time they charge their phone. typically after that, it takes only 2-2.5 hours to provide the phone with a full charge. Over charging will fry the memory and make the battery hold less charge and over a period of time eventually kill the battery, making you have to buy a new one.
P.S. If I am completely off base please let me know. Yes I am noob, but this info was actually part of my training courses so I'd love to tell them they're wrong. Hope I was helpful.

The phone electronics will not actually allow overcharging. you will have problems if you do overcharge it but you can't do that while it is in the phone.

Thanks but in addition to any designed protection against overcharging I also pull the phone off the charger as soon as practicable after hitting 100% per Circle Battery with the exception being when using GPS which means that the phone will charge very slowly to 100% and remain connected to the charger until the next stop in my trip. The phone charges more slowly on the car adapter because the screen is constantly on along with running GPS and music software and streaming music via bluetooth.
I also try to make sure that I always disconnect the charger before starting or turning off the vehicle's engine. It may not be necessary anymore but that is an old habit.
Happening to me recently, before the battery lasted very long, but the past few days I arrive at night with 20% left. I tried doing a factory reset but it still the same. Also, the "cell standby" is the biggest consumer? I don't know what does that mean...

As far as I know 'cell standby' is basically your phone searching for a signal.
Remove any app that u suspect. If u have installed battery indicator pro, that's the culprit. Same happened to my phone when i had battery indicator pro. Install juice defender ultimate. Works a bit. Clear off d ram and reboot

For what little it may be worth replacing the battery showed the same problem and motorola now admits that this might be a motherboard issue and wants me to send the device to them for repair. They had their level 3 contract tech support review what I had done for troubleshooting and they agreed that the above steps plus replacing the battery had exhausted all possible options that can be taken outside a repair depot.
Those with similar problems may want to do the same and finally call motorola.

Wonderful, I am on my 3rd Atrix 2. Returned two previous because of the sd card reader/compatibility problems. The third one I received hasn't had the problem but now I can't go more than 8 hours without the battery going dead.
Cell standby is normally over 33% and Phone idle is normally at 30% or higher.
This happens whether I leave wifi on all day or turn it off.
Stock 2.3.6
I work from home and I have 5 bar signal strength from my house so there is no reason for my phone to constantly be searching for network signal.
Still happening to me. Today I was talking with an AT&T representative via online chat, and they only tell you to disable background data, and set it to super saver mode. They didn't want to listen that the phone before lasted until midnight with the battery still green and that now it goes red. The guy said that the phone is supposed to last 8.5 hours, since that is the talk time. I tried to explain that the talk time didn't work like that, but no good.
Finally, I went to an AT&T store and inquired about the issue. Since I'm within the 1 year warranty they are going to send me a new battery. If that doesn't fix the problem they said they would change my phone.

My s640 seems to have developed an issue with the battery. It will get to about 50% and stay there for most of the day then suddenly I get the low and critical warnings, then off. The warnings then off sequence happens within about 10 seconds of getting the first warning. On one occasion I got the low and critical warnings, but then the phone reported 268% battery remaining.
Is/has anyone else experienced this issue or anything similar? I'm wondering if it is the phone or the battery.

I'll fully Charge my battery and then disconnect it and us it for about 10 minutes and suddenly it will drop my call, turn off my bluetooth and disable the radio (network), and if I don't plug it in, within 30 seconds it shuts off. If I remove the battery, hold the power button for 5 seconds and the put the battery back in and turn it on then I have my battery shows 90+% free.
I'm not sure if it's the battery or the phone.
have you tried running the battery till it won't turn on the phone. Then charging it up again?
maybe a hard reset may help?

Yes I too am having this issue since rom upgrade so is a friend, he just purchased new battery from Telus but they shipped wrong one. Will update if new battery resolves his issues. I went throught three phones with brand new battery they all did same thing Battery is not HTC 20 dolllar aftermarket one (just before warranty expired). Have gotten 400 credit for new phone but nothing like this one out there except Touch Pro Diamond and I hear even with new battery that phone battery life is too short to last through day. Get feeling Telus broke something in software with Rom update used to be when phone battery was expiring a red light would blink (opposite of blue tooth light) now it is only notifications from WM that phone battery is critically low and shuts of radio etc. yet you plug phone in and it's charged 10 minutes later makes no sense. Rechargable batteries voltage change with charge the interesting thing when I pull my battery the voltage is the same charged or just after error messages (I have a very expensive True RMS Voltmeter from work that has been calibrated in last year) but without load this isn't an accurate test. Does make me think something is not right and beleive it software related for more see my post in Howrds Forums under phone model.
I am having the same issue after the ROM update, not sure if it's the cause. Already replaced a battery on warranty for not holding charge. But now I have had the phone over a year so telus wants me to buy a battery for $80. I know based on this information i'll be wasting my money.

I replaced the battery on my phone and these odd issue I was having are gone guess we have to face the fact that you need to purchase a replacement once a year hopefully it will last a year my problems start just short of a year.

well the battery didn't even last an hour on the way to work.
#1 it was similar but 2-3mm shorter than the OEM and barely touched the contacts on the phone.
#2 charged overnight ok and said 100% charged then withing 20min it said low battery then died shortly after
#3 would not charge a second time (on 2 of my wall chargers, two usb and 1 car charger) Just the red light would light up. Tried jiggling the battery but nothing not even a flashing red light.
so much for a battery bought from the US. Waiting for RMA

I purchased a battery from E-bay and it would not charge at all. Existing charge in battery was enough for me to know that my issues were battery related after all as phone lasted for quite awhile. Tried charging ebay battery for close to 12 hours no go, so returned it for full refund. Called Telus because my calls in were while I was under warranty still but it had since expired they credited my account for the price of battery over a couple of years (1.5 batteries really) to make up for battery not lasting more than a year...hope that makes sense. Doubt I will buy another HTC with todays battery technology there is no reason one of these batties can't last 2-3 years if taken care of. Just a money grab telus/htc on their part in my opinion.

the battery is CS-DS640SL 1250mAh 3.7V
I got it to charge by turning off the phone and plugging it into a usb port on my PC. Took about 6 hours to charge to 100%.
Won't charge when phone is on which is weird. Even at 90+% charge.
Lasted a full day without charging. That's a good thing I guess. Even when I restarted, it didn't lose the typical 10% drop in charge the other battery does.
I'm going to discharge it and charge it three times to see if it starts working properly and letting me charge it normally. Was a tip someone gave me. Won't hurt anything, and if it doesn't work I can still send it back.
Curious what you guys think. do you think it's a bad battery and I should just get an exchange, or I should just get my money back, and shell out the $100+ for a Telus battery?
Well the longlast battery test failed badly. Lasted about half a day with minimum calls and data use. No wifi no bluetooth. After it died I took it out and let it sit for a bit as the battery was fairly warm. After I put it back in, it said I had about %40 left. Very odd. And it lasted for another two hours before dying.
Now it's back at the won't charge stage. So I finally got an RMA number, so this one is going back.
Hitting Telus on the way home to pony up for a new battery. Getting the extended one as it's only $20 more. Hopefully this one will last more than a year - then I can get another phone (got to love 3yr retention contracts that end early )

We need to be precise in what we communicate in order not to have misunderstandings. Many threads disagree on how good the battery is on th G2x. I agree that 6-8 hours of continuous use is great, that is if you're literally using nonstop, without having the screen shut off.The problem that many users are complaining about is that the battery keeps draining at a unacceptable rate even when the phone is just on standby. The excuse is that this is a smart phone and it has to ping the towers in order to receive calls.
Well my last smart phone was the HTC Shadow which was a Windows based operating system and the battery would never drain at 5-15% an hour just on standby. I did some reading on many sites, and the majority consensus is only android handsets have this huge battery drain problem when it's not being used but just on standby. So what gives? Is it because of google maps? Or some other google program that has to constantly access your phone even when you yourself aren't activley using it?
I've notice on my juice defender log that when I'm not using my phone it shows every few minutes something about accessing a schedule and data. What could this be? Back ground data? The only way I can get the phone not to drain excessivley when on standby is to put it on airplane mode. The bad battery drain when phone isn't being used has something to do with the Android operating system and the cellphones radio being very active even when not in use.

Believe me I tried resetting it twice, and it does nothing for improving the battery drain.
If any one has juice defender go to status tab and check your log. Even with the supposedly data turned off it'll show the the phone us accessing some schedule or data every few minutes.Maybe one of the knowledgeable developers can look into this and tell us what is happening and create a fix.

The battery that came with my G2x in the box (manuf. date of 2011-04-06) had the insane battery drain where I can watch it drop. I got a replacement thru Tmo (manuf. date of 2011-04-28), which has been outstanding.
Prior to the new battery, I lasted about 7 hours with moderate/heavy use. The new battery just clocked in at almost 16 hours the other day.

We'll see, I just spoke to t mobile customer rep, they shipped me out a new one which should get here on the 3rd. Although, I didn't appreciate them charging me $10 for shipping. 16 hours of heavy use and I'll be content, if not I'm getting me the mugen 4500mah extended battery. So with o out you touching the phone how much percent does it drain in an hour?

Right now I'm at 99%, phone has been unplugged for 2hrs 34mins. I'm on wifi at the moment, but I would have drained anyway on the old battery with this same setup.

Yup, same exact setup with old and new battery.
I'll try when I have the time and patience for it, but maybe someone can perform an experiment by charging to full then just let the phone sit on standby until the battery dies. Do this with wifi, bluetooth, juice defender and gps off. Log how long it took to die, then run the same test again, but with juice defender turned on. If it can hold it's charge for 2-3 days I'll be very happy, but if it dies out in 16 hours just being idle and on standby then somethings wrong.

JD only kicks in when I'm on cell data. With wifi on, it never activates I believe. Unless I'm looking at this wrong.
I was getting horrible battery life when I first got mine. I couldn't go 8 hours without it dying, and that was not even using the phone...on standby! I tried a toggle switch for data to turn it off and on when using it, but it still died. Next, I tried a 2g-4g toggle switch. Battery life is flat out amazing now. I can go almost 8 hours on a full charge and be on maybe 95%!!! I think a lot of it has to do with my office building and not getting the best reception. I would tend to bounce back and forth from edge to 4g all the time. Anyway, I use switch pro for the toggle widget, but give it a shot for a few days.
Switchpro only has a 2G/3G toggle. How did you get the 4G toggle or did you mistake what it was called.

I had a similar problem with my first G2x. With the screen turned off and in stand-by the battery would drain 15-20% per hour. I even bought 3 cheap batteries from China and the results were the same. I then had T-Mobile send me a replacement G2x. The new G2x drains about 1% per hour in stand-by. I even get 1% drain with the 3 cheap batteries. So it appears the problem was the phone. I had tried CM7 and Eaglesblood on the first G2x and it didn't stop the drain.
I had terrible life when first started, than I did the factory reset and the battery conditioning thing.
Took it off charge over 30 hours ago, it still has 10% left. Within that it had a solid 2 hours use of edge/3g/4g internet (Searching for towers as I was on a train). And a good hour of me using it on wireless for checking emails and browsing while at home and work.
Note that I have GPS turned off, and the phone is on a wireless network for almost all of its idle time. NO Juice Defender, no data stwitching, no rooting. Stock standard, although I did follow the advice here and not activate any of the TMobile apps.
Pretty happy with it now.

Don't think so. Another phone had a "calibration" routine but I haven't heard anything on this one. I tried the calibration routine from the other phone on mine and noticed no difference.
I really have a sucky battery life on htc sensation. I am trying to figure it out how I could get it to last for more than 12hours with average use...

While a lith-ion battery doesn't learn or have a memory, the battery does have a chip in it that needs to be calibrated. You'll need to cycle your battery from fully charged to fully discharged 3 to 5 times to calibrate this circuit. Normally a LI battery doesn't like to be fully discharged, so try to avoid doing this in everyday use. Better to give it maintenence charges. And heat is a big enemy of these batteries as well.
And seems to me 12 hours is pretty good battery life for a smart phone.

2 points.
1. There are also battery stats on the phone, which need to be built by full charge/discharge cycle.
2. Discharge phone till it's dead with no fear, battery controller shuts it down when there is some juice left. It's like reserve in your tank, it shows you have petrol for 0 miles/kilometers, but in reality there is another 5 litres sitting in the tank.
I worked in the cell phone industry for a long time. The best thing i have seen for a full charge is to regulaurly do a full charge and than turnphone off and plug back in until indicator shows full again(if it shows full already charge for half to full hour). I have always seen better results. Also if rooted wipe battery stats in advanced before flashing any radio or rom.

This may easily be true. I think I read that the battery doesn't actually like being fully charged and that most chargers shut down early because of this. Maybe your tip has something to do with that. I don't know myself how that will correllate w/ calibrating the charge circuit that I spoke of.

That's a very intersting battery you got here. It has bigger capacity than the original one. Does it have the same size? Were you able to fit it in and put the original cover back? Have you noticed a noticeable improvement in battery life or is it just scam?
I don't have the tmo 4g, I have the european version, but I believe it should work too, shouldn't it?
Out of the box.... Use it till it dies completely. Charge it 100% without interruption.
I've ALWAYS had great battery life on all my devices using that method.
Do that a few times a month when it's convenient....you'll have a happy battery.
Battery and DRIVER need to be conditioned/calibrated.
I get 12-16 hours with fairly heavy use. If you want more, ya need to wait for different battery tech OR get a dumb phone.
Asking for more than 12 or so hours is just silly with a device this powerful and a display this large. I'm not someone who likes to cut the balls off my superphone to save a few hours on battery life. I'd rather get 12 hours and use this phone the way it was intended too, than get 24 hours and have silly progs like Juice Defender running. Unless you know you're gonna be lost in a forest for a few days, don't most people have access to a charger sometime during their day

My phone has been unplugged for 10 hours, I have 1h 17 minutes of display on time, taking 67% of battery. The rest is spread between Cell standby 11%, Wi-Fi 11%, Phone Idle 8% and Maps 3%.
It is now standing at 29% battery. I find that awful and can't believe any of you say it is normal. I have disabled HTC Hub and Sense sync and all the settings are pretty much the same as on my Galaxy S2.
On the SGS2 I manage to easily get 3 to 4 hours of screen time before the battery goes down to the thirties/twenties and a lot more heavy usage than I've managed on the Sensation. I'm on my second battery cycle and I really hope it improves because I'm very underwhelmed so far.

He advised a calibration as follows for HTC phones
Make sure fastboot is off.
1. when your battery is low, do a full charge for about 8 hours, your light should now be green. once its full, disconnected the phone
2. Fully switch off the phone(pull battery out if needed then put in). and plug in charger again for an hour, the light will actually be orange even though it was green before you turned it off.
and your screen should load the charging icon for when its turned off.
3.once it is green, turn on the phone. (put in pins or passwords etc) leave the phone on for a minute, then fully turn off again.
4. charge again for an hour and your charging indicator should be green and your battery is calibrated.!

On the SGS2 I manage to easily get 3 to 4 hours of screen time before the battery goes down to the thirties/twenties and a lot more heavy usage than I've managed on the Sensation. I'm on my second battery cycle and I really hope it improves because I'm very underwhelmed so far.

I think you're too caught up in the percentage number the stats page shows for battery use. It doesn't matter one bit if that graffic shows the display at 99.99%. As long as you're getting a full day out of your Sensation....isn't that all that really matters? Or am I confused by what bothers you?? Sounds to me like you're getting a full day...unless you don't sleep??
You've been unplugged for 10 hours and it seems as if you have another 2-4 hours left with that 30%.... Whats wrong with that? It's great.
This is not a Nokia 6133 It's a dual-core superphone, with a 4.3" qHD display.
Of course by the nature of the tech, amoled will be more efficient with regards to display...but as far as I can tell, the GS2 doesn't last any longer than this phone on a regular day to day basis under normal to heavy use.
I get 12-16 hours on a charge with fairly heavy use. Sync, WiFi, Calls, Web, GPS...nothing disabled or throttled.
I wouldn't get caught up with that % number in the battery stats....it's misleading....big time.
Condition the battery properly....you'll never have any battery issues...unless it's faulty.
Also people just need to be realistic with regards to battery life.... A gallon of gasoline will get you much further in a VW Bug than a Bugatti....

There is an app to calibrate your battery, but you need to be rooted. Go to www.teamroyal.net and there is instructions that you MUST follow. Read up on it now so you can be prepared for when we get root. You also ONLY want to calibrate your battery once every 4-6 weeks, and only if it needs it. Doing it too often can fry your battery.
I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but I hope it will help many once we get root.

for step 1 is it after 8 hours i disconnect the phone even though it will be green light earlier???

I should be picking up my SGS2 today and I was just wondering what exactly I should be doing with the battery? I've read in a bunch of places that draining the battery fully and then recharging it fully gives better battery life, but I've also read this:
Lithium ion batteries do not respond well to full discharge, you will see reduced capacity and early failure if it happens too often. In any case it is not possible to overcharge the battery on a BlackBerry because the battery and phone have enough intelligence to control the charge (unless the battery is already defective).

And on Android phones, when the battery indicator shows 20% or something, is that when the phone is going to die? Or will it die at 0%? Obviously at 20% it would be to protect the battery but maybe Android has been programmed to show 0% when the battery is actually at 20%.

The manual is probably stored on the phone, at least my new Ascend II came with its stored on the phone, you have to goto the big menu (forgive me for not knowing the technical term for it) to find it however
i got my battery fully charged...then in the first day i discharged it till 10% at least that's what my phone was saying
i read too that the new li-ion batteryes do not need to be "formated" (fully discharged till the phone dies and then fully charged with the phone turned off) in android case i think that thing is not posible coz it needs at least 5% to pass the bootloader and then begin to charge
anyway in my manual it says that the battery will begin the normal state after 8 days of use, until then it may disschage quick

Calibrate the battery. Charge the phone while its switched off for about 6 hours, and then use the phone untill the entire battery runs out and it switches off on its own. After this, the phone should be able to use the battery properly.
i just used my galaxy and made it empty, then charged it full.
nowadays i have runtimes from 3days (72 hours) and then its @ about 5%
there seems to be a lot of back-and-forth regarding whether or not draining a battery is healthy; i drain my iphone battery down to zero about once a month and the battery has been doing fine for two years . . . whether it would be doing just as well without the draining time is anyone's guess.
I have always been under the impression that lit-ion batteries do not need any kind of special care or break in. But since our phones estimate the charge, we should occasionally let the battery run out to reset the calibration in case it gets screwed up.

I don't think you need to worry about draining the battery till it's dead. My phone dies often and the battery is still kickin It's my understanding, that the purpose of draining the phone before you charge it is to calibrate what the OS says for charge remaining to the battery's actual charge.
Or something like that...

I have my sgs 2 since June and it's working pretty well apart from the battery drain which is very harmful in my daily life
I've recently flashed the Cognition 1.30 (last friday). Before that, my sgs was able to last the entire day before discharging with a moderate use (10-20 mn on games, few sms, 15 mn consulting mails, 1 hr on internet). Since i've flashed with the cognition Rom, the battery drain is really awesome!!!!!!
I fully charge the phone (switched off) then when i switch it on and the phone stays idle, after 1 hr or so, i've already lost almost 20%. When i'm on internet or playing games, the battery loss is approximatively of 1% per min.
I've made a full wipe and recalibrated my battery so normally it should at least last a day and thats not the case.
Could somebody help me or should i buy a new battery and test it ?
Because i relly like this rom and from others users, it has a good feedback concerning the battery use
OK, so I've had my SM-P900 for about year now.
Suddenly just this week I am noticing my battery is draining considerably faster than usual and is also taking longer to charge. I was using a custom rom but have now switched back to the default 5.02 version that I installed via Kies.
So after a year do I really need to purchase a new battery?
I keep most everything off all the time and really haven't changed anything or how I use it in quite a few months so was wondering if I actually have to break down and purchase a new battery already.

Read the threat : Flickering screen to see how to adjust the tip of battery cable closer in order to make better contact before replace a new battery, within one year the battery should still be good.
If you see the same thing with new battery, probably the battery connector has cracked solder joints and needs to be re soldered, common problem of Samsung tablets, not just only this model.
Lithium-Ion batteries generally last between 300-500 full charge cycles before they start losing power. A year is.. way too soon.
Does it also take longer to charge when the device is turned off completely?
In general a drain increase is caused by a software issue, mobile data or a bug. (or heat/cold.) (The difference between mobile data on and off with a 4G connection is 100-0% in deep sleep in 2 days with LTE, and 80 days in airplane mode.)
Signs of a dying battery include random discharges (it suddenly loses 30-70%, it's at 100 when you unplug and suddenly drops to 30%, or it's dead, you plug it in and turn it back on and it suddenly has 50% charge), random reboots and the device just not turning on at all for no apparent reason.
While it'll loose capacity eventually, that usually doesn't negatively affect the charging speed. (If anything it charges faster because it reaches 100% sooner.)
So assuming that I have a dead battery, is there a good replacement battery out there?
I have tried replacement batteries in the past and have found only subpar batteries on the market.
I bought a new battery on Amazon : 26$
This one is an original battery so at this price you should order one.
And about flickering issue, yes you should resolder connectors or changing the battery might solve this issue too (it worked for me)
