Galaxy Note 10.1 or Nexus 7 for studying

Hello everyone.
I'm a economic sciences student and i'm looking for a new Tablet which can make my student life easier and of course entertain me a bit.
I want a Tablet to read PDF files. Also i want to use it for Multimedia like watching Movies, playing Games and i want to use it for car Navigation.
One other question is if a 7 inch Screen is enough for all those tasks , but of course not all at the same time :laugh:
Taking notes is not that important because I'm still faster taking notes "analog" then "digital".
I almost decided to buy the Nexus 7 but then i've seen a review of the Galaxy Note 10.1 and now i can't decide anymore.
All my friends are saying : buy the N7, its the best Tablet atm. Like i said i don't know if i like 7 inches and if its ideal for reading PDF's.
I also miss the 3G connection because because I use car Navigation a lot and real time traffic reports are important for me .
The Phone and Message features that are included in the Note are awesome, but i heared many times now that the Display is not so good @the Note 10.1.
The N7 has already a big development community and that is what I'm also feared by the Note 10.1 because i like to flash my devices and reach with them the best performance.
It would be very nice if sombody could give me a advice because i'm getting tired of searching pro and contras

I'll toss in my 2 cents...
We have both tablets at our house - love them both. My son uses the Nexus in school with a bluetooth keyboard case and can do papers with it and print wireless to our printer at the house. The screen on the Nexus 7 is same resolution as the Note 10.1 (1280X800) but in a smaller package so everything seems just a little bit sharper (note 10.1 screen is also great, I have no complaints with it). if most of what your doing is consumption type activities (reading, watching movies, playing games etc..) then the Nexus accomplishes that very well. The only down side (for me) on the Nexus 7 is no extra micro SD slot for storage, my son uses a dongle to plug in a USB drive and that works well. Overall the Nexus is a very fluid great looking/working devise and you would not go wrong in getting one.
Now the Note 10.1 - Love this one too. For me I value a larger screen, I just cant get used to going back to a smaller 7" screen after using a 10" one (personal preference). Overall performance is very good on the Note and performs all the functions the Nexus 7 does just as well, I can only guess it will get better with JB upgrade coming soon. But where the Note 10.1 really shines for me is the use of the S pen - I use the S pen all day taking notes and using the multi tasking that this tablet has incorporated into it. For you however this big plus may not be the advantage it is for me, based on what you said you wanted to use the tablet for. It almost seems like you should be looking at other options...just straight newer Tegra 3 type tablets and not just limiting yourself to just these two options. As an example my older Transformer TF101 will do everything you just outlined you wanted a tablet to do and its over a year old now (granted not as smooth as the newer, faster tablets now).
So not sure if you looked at the newer Asus, sony, or other tablets but I'd at least keep my options open. All of the newer tablets work very well in doing what you want, they will all have their pros/cons and design flaws that could have been implemented better. My suggestion is you read up more on some real user reviews on the whole range of newer tablets (if you haven't already) and get more of an idea of the options you have, and lets face it...more options is always a great thing!
Also there is the price point - you never mentioned if that was a factor - the Nexus 7 does seem the best you can get in that price range ($200 - 250). $500 for the lower 16GB Note 10.1 your paying in part for options you will not use (S-pen/active digitizer).

Hi, i bought yesterday the N7 and sold it today. I didn't like it at all.
I will look now for the 10.1. I also looked for the Infinity Pad but i read that it has a lot of problems and also i like the 3G feature on the 10.1N and the micro sd card slot

Push , it would be very nice if some other users could share their experience.
It would be also nice to know what the difference between the N8000 and the N8013 Model is

I own both GN 10.1 and Nexus 7. If I had to choose one it would definitely be the GN 10.1 for its versatility and capability for all your requirements. The one area where Nexus 7 has an edge is one-hand portability for in car use and for GPS. If you can afford it get both.

I don't mind to use the GN 10.1 for car navigation^^

That's another reason to get the Note then! I would definitely recommend this tablet as it is very stable and pretty much does everything you would need it to do based on your requirements listed.
The best thing would be for you to purchase one from a store that has a good returns policy and try it out for yourself to make sure it meets most if not all of your requirements, if you are happy, keep it and if not return it.
I chose to keep mine and do not have any regrets.

I have both, and I think 10.1 screen is much more comfortable than 7... Also, Note 10.1 features are amazing...

I just bought my Note 10.1 today and will use it in my abnormal psych class tomorrow. I was impressed the Kno app had my text books for download. To bad I had already bought them for all my classes. This would have saved me money. I also downloaded the Blackboard app and it looks great on this beast. I hope the keyboard comes to the states soon that will be a great added feature for class.

I just got the 8013 Note 10.1 yesterday and it is really brilliant. I downloaded all the pdfs for my Real Analysis math class and the S-pen works flawlessly. What's great is it also works seamlessly with EzPdf which I love to use. Since the 8013 is wifi only I'm not sure how it will help with gps if you make a wrong turn though.. It came with ICS 4.0.4 but I hear JB is out soon. I haven't rooted Samsung products before so I'm going to wait till some flawless root method comes out. Battery life is much longer than I had anticipated. Haven't charged it yet since it has been out of the box yesterday and there is still 65% left- I wonder how long a full charge will last ^^, good luck!

Get a navigation app (Sygic is what I use) that allows for offline navigation. Basically you pre download entire maps like a normally functioning gps unit has. With Google maps you can only download a set area around your destination if I remember correctly.
Once you have an offline navigation app feel free to get lost.

Sorry to hijack your thread but i am in the exact same predicament i was about to pull the trigger on the Nexus 7 but the Note 10.1 was released and i'm debating whether to take the plunge. Can anyone comment on battery life, output to tv on the note and also do any of you find the tablet useful when having a phone such as a Galaxy S3

For my first initial charge yesterday, I got just over 8 hours with 80% screen time and 12% battery life left. Thats without the battery being settled and me playing on it all afternoon and evening. A couple more cycles and I expect it to get better. I have the Galaxy Note phone and paired the two but havn't tried anything between them yet. Not sure you can like the Blackberry's phones and Playbook. Going to have to look into it.

From what I can gather media can be shared between devices through Samsungs Allshare app which connects through wifi. I am at work and cant set it up right now, but from what I have seen its like DLNA except exclusive to Samsung devices that contain the app.

Just FYI, after three hours of note taking in two classes, there isnt even a hint of a scratch from using the stylus. Takes a little getting used to but it works great. Between S Note and Polaris Office I prefer using Polaris for my class notes. The handwritting to text works better and also has prediction. No more trying to decipher my chicken scratch before a test. I can also save in word format or PDF when done and then just upload it to dropbox to sync to my other devices.

Who Owns A Pro?

I'm looking for your thoughts/opinions after using him/her for a week or so. What is your primary use for the Surface Pro? Worth it? Or have you returned it? Plan to stick with it? Or jump ship when the next superhotawesome drops?

Got the Rt for my Daughter and finally the Pro for myself was waiting for what seemed like forever. I'm very satisfied with it, it's perfect for what I do I'm self employed and blends all my devices into one convenient package. It's that sweet spot and I'm sure I will have it for a long time.

I have the Surface pro and I love it,It has complete replaced my i7 laptop.it has plenty of Storage space ism not san why everyone was complaining of course the os requires Storage what type of idiot would expect it not to eat into the available Storage.
Interface
The new interface Was design for touch after a week of usage I could not imagine using win 7 on this device. MS did a great Job when designing the interface.
handwriting recognition
no os available Oat there has better handwriting recognition in comparison to windows8. My handwriting could be in Chicken scratch but somehow handwrite recognition gets it right every time
Stability
Overall the device is Stable I only had to reboot once, because chrome does not play Well on surface. Everything else runs like a Champ.
you Cannot compare the Surface pro to any android or iPad. Both are Just cool toys in comparison, the Surface Pro is a true productivity tool.
Battery Life
Have you used a Lenovo. The t 410 battery life is terrible in comparison. I get more than 4 hours on my Surface Pro. Microsoft tried to be too honest with specs.

I have not had problems with battery life. I charge it once a day. I am enjoying using it so far. I have had a couple of issues with legacy software that I need for work not running with the scaling, so i choose to disable that on the particular app and then it runs.
I even dropped the sucker from pretty high up and nothing happened (I know, I feel stupid). I find myself really reaching for the screen, so much easier than using a mouse. I really wish more software was optimized for that. Firefox needs an update that would let me use it with my fingers (I don't mean in modern UI, I mean desktop mode).
Overall, I am really satisfied. It's a powerful machine and it's been a lot of fun setting it up.

I have had a 128 Pro since launch day. I have an RT as well (well, I should say my wife has it) and we are bot very happy with the Surface.

I have a 64gb pro (Couldn't find the 128) and bought the 128 off of MS. Going to keep this one and return it later when I get my 128. I am quite happy with it. Although it is weird to adjust to the touch keyboard. I couldn't handle the type. It was nice, but too thick and weird when folded back. Overall, it runs like a champ. 5 sec boot. 3 sec shut down. 6+ hours when just using onenote mostly. I love it. Now, it would replace my laptop if I could just get my hands on the 128. Soon. The only thing I'm disappointed in is Chrome support for Windows 8 and touch screens. It's pretty crappy to be honest.

I've had mine for almost a week now - still getting used to it.
I have the 128 GB version - replacing my old 2 year old Alienware M11x R1 (relegated now to my daughter for her school PC) - quite simply - the SP is what I was originally looking for when I bought the M11x..
I run Office, various browsers, many other apps, as well as code on it.. doesn't miss a beat. Averages around 5-6+ hours on a single "typical" charge doing standard "productive" (which you cannot do on an Android/iPad tablet) by my estimates - less if you watch a lot of youtube/streaming videos.
Make no mistake - this *IS* a PC wrapped in a tablet format. To that end - it has some quirks in trying to accommodate both form factors - and it's very unapologetic in the way it attempts to stay the course between these 2 very different form factors. To be clear - *you* must adapt to it..
That being said - my 2 cents - it's lighter and much more portable than an ultrabook, and much more useful than the typical "consumer" driven tablets of Android/iOS...
Combine the 2 (again it doesn't give you a choice.. ) - you have a very unique experience that you'll either immediately fall in love with - or hate.. I'll be the first to admit that it's not going to be a device for "everyone" - but I also believe that MS has a winner on their hands in the form of a truly productive, viable, and unique device that will ultimately be adopted much more widely in professional and enterprise environments than the "typical" consumer market - though I imagine it'll do quite well there as well - especially for students..
To answer your question - yes I'd recommend it and yes I'm keeping it..

I had the RT for 20 days and took it back for the pro.Would never recommend an RT for someone with similar wants and needs. I am so glad I did and the timing was perfect. It is what I wanted in a tablet/laptop.

I've got an RT and once the Pro is out I'll get one, then the one I dont like will go to the tech here at work...

I have had the 128 for 6 days. So far, I am using it as a replacement for the HP envy15. I was already using windows 8 on a desktop, but windows 8 on a tablet is cool. The device gets a little warm, as I use it all day, but so far its great. You cant beat having access to legacy apps on a tablet. I cant wait for the app market to grow.

The 128 was never in stock but I have a 64 gb micro sd for storage.
This unit replaced my iPad mini and Lenovo Yoga 13.
Even though I bought it from Staples I was still able to get Microsoft complete warranty on it. Best $149 you can spend, it includes accidental.

Got the 64 GB with type keyboard running Ubuntu 12.10 loving this thing!

You'll need a USB to ethernet adaptor with plug and play functionality on linux (most branded ones work I think) and then start up the tablet with the adaptor plugged in and connected properly etc. I think ubuntu then normally prompts for driver installs which it will do via the ethernet.

Using USB WiFi adaptor. I asked over in Ubuntu irc and they said there's a bug with the Marvell drivers and a fix is being issued.

Picked up at 128gb pro on monday. The build quality is great, but it's just a bit heavy to use as a tablet. It's doable, but really it's better suited sitting on a desk with the stand. I was previously using a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 but it was too slow to run certain programs needed for work (large excel sheets, MATLAB, Access, etc). The battery life is as advertise - I get around 5 hours with brightness at half. I thought I'd be able to stretch it to 6 hours but there really isn't much optimizing left to do so I haven't been able to. Compared to any arm based tablet, yea the battery life is weak but really it has the specs of a real laptop and compared to the MacBook Air 11" it has the same battery life with a better screen and weighs less so it's quite a nice machine imo. I didn't think I would need the digitizer and pen but I'm finding more ways to use it and it makes for a nice addition. I kind of wish Microsoft went with a 16:10 form factor though... 16:9 tablets are really just too narrow and awkward to be used in portrait mode when holding it like a tablet.

16:10 isn't going to make it any better in portrait mode. The Surface just isn't designed to be used in portrait mode. It's awkward and Metro is optimized for landscape mode.

[Q] Note/ Nexus?

Hi all, I am currently deciding between each tablet experience and I am stuck on a decision. I have read a few times some posts here and on other websites about each device and it seems to be...
gaming/media - nexus
productivity/ s pen - note
however my needs kind of fit all four and I can live without the s pen.
I read alot
I am a teacher so I need to be able to annotate books and pdfs
I also want to plug a keyboard in a type emails/ documents from time to time
but (just incase the surface rt is mentioned) I love android and I love media and games.
I really want the best and most future proof experience.
Now I currently have a note and I do like it, but I can get a nexus for a good price but would need to sell the note.
I like both touchwiz and vanilla android (as I had a nexus 4) and for me really, speed is important (one element I do like about iOS).
So.. which device would be best? Thanks.
p.s. I plan to pair either one with either the asus fonepad or nexus 7.

A big plus for me with the note is the micro sd slot. But if space is not an issue then probably the nexus for speed and resolution.

I traded a Nexus 4 for my Note 2 and feel the Nexus 4 doesn't even come close to the Note 2 at least for me.

If you plan on plugging in a keyboard you may want to look around the edge of your note very closely.

If you can wait a little man, I sure Samsung and Google with be releasing new variants of the devices real soon already in hearing rumours of the new nexus 7 coming with full hd, and I'm sure the new note 10.1 will have octo core with 3 gigs of ram

So the 2 big things for me were the not has memory expansion...
I have a 32gb internal note with 64gb sd card and am filling these up...
Because of the new additions to android and the greater resolution and capabilities of the new tablets, games are getting bigger and bigger. I downloaded a game the other day that required over 1gb of additional files, not to mention game saves... A small internal memory, 16gb, is no good as I filled that one too fast.
Now you might not get a lot of big games like that but I find a few apps fills things up pretty quick especially if you add in video files, music and text/doc/pdf files...
The 2nd for me was the ability to make and receive calls on my tablet, I have the N8000, as it can be a pain if you have to keep reaching for your phone. A bluetooth headset and my not allow me to make/receive calls and still find the data I need to share. This might not be a biggie for you but it's so easy not to have to hunt down my phone if I need to make a call.
I haven't found any problems with speed, I run a stock , rooted rom and it's blazingly fast as long as I don't fill up the internal memory too much.
The screen is fine, unless you are actually comparing screens all the time you won't see the difference as you can use the resolution its got fine. I watch shows and movies on mine all the time and no complaints here...
Love the speakers, the fact they are located on the front means the sound is directed to you, the user, not to everyone else in front of you.
Most apps work fine though I have found a few that require sideloading. There's also a few that are s-pen specific.
Interface is easy to use and if you don't like it find another like Apex or Nova...
S-pen is of course the be all and end all of why you would buy this over any other android tablet. It makes life SOOOO much easier, is fantastic when it comes to annotating PDF's and writing, makes drawing fantastic as the wacom digitiser recognises how hard or softly you press the pen to the tablet and gives a corresponding line width. Also a lot more precise than just the rubber stylus that you can get for the other tablets.
Overall I was happy with my purchase of the Note. It's a good work horse, Allows me to work or play, sometimes both at the same time, and hasn't let me down yet...
The only real complaint I have is why Samsung decided to not allow a USB HDD to run. You can plug a memory stick in with no problems but plug in a 2.5" portable HDD and you get the dreaded " A High Powered USB Has Been Detected" . Considering I have an Acer A501 that uses the 1Tb HDD with no problems this was a disappointment, but then again I have got the sd card and the USB key to use so not too much of a problem...
Can't say anything about the nexus as I don't have 1. Sorry, no help there but you might get some idea about the Note.

Buy either. The note is great but the screen is outdated. Better wait the the next version of the note

If you're going to be annotating more than just a little, I'd say you need the stylus to keep from going insane.. Otherwise, there isn't much I'd add for either side.

I'm considering purchasing a A700.
I've used CyanogenMod on other devices before, and having it available is a big plus for this tablet, even though My understanding is that there is a factory 4.1 that is also pretty good.
I have read the sticky's and done some searches, but I still have somethings I would like specific answers on:
Is USB storage mode supported? I am asking about when the tablet is connected to a PC, Not USB OTG. If so, is the internal 32G and the SD card available? Please answer for Factory ROMs and for CM 10.1.
Does the CM 10.1 DSP Equalizer work? I have read that messing with the EQ settings does not change the sound.
Is there anything in CM 10.1 that does not work that I should know about? GPS? (Including decent time-to-fix), both cameras? are both mics (noise cancellation) supported? Bluetooth (for everything - Keyboards, Stereo sound, File transfers)?
There are some pretty good prices on the A700, but it is very late in the A700's life cycle, and there are much newer devices available cheaper. EX: The Nexus 7 (2013) has the same resolution, twice the RAM, more clock speed, and weighs 1/3 as much. (I know it has no SD slot, no HDMI, and it's 7 inches instead of 10).
Is it still worth buying an A700?

Darn Mate. You ask a lot of questions for one whom doesn't own the tab
For CM10.1 questions, you should review pawitp's CM thread. Personally I prefer stock. Less issues when modifying things, and better compatibility across the board.
USB storage supported (nobody would get one if it didn't work).
I have 0 issues when connecting to PC. I get both storage. (although you will not get access to /system, unless using ADB). This is a root/rw issue.
As with audio, can't tell you about DSP, as I don't use it. I use Android4Viper. Might as well go for the best. It replaces the stock/CM.
If you buy a new tab, regardless of brand, and just want immediately to goto CM, well, you take your chances. CM is CM. You can have 10 roms built from CM, but the source is pretty much all the same. CM.
I like the 701. Has most of the same specs as others. To say it's at the end of it's life cycle is pretty off. I don't see any quad 8 processors. Maybe a little more RAM, but hey, we ain't recalculating 1gb spreadsheets here.
(comparing 7" to 10", well, do the math)
The 70x is just now getting good dev. I hear rumor another dev from the 50x forums will be joining.

It's no suprise that a 7" wheighs less then 10"
Personally no sd slot is no go for me.
I really really like the screen of the A700. It's so much better then the Tab2 from my son.

Agree. A device without an SD slot, chills my bones. A big turn off. Also, android can sometimes have issues transferring huge chunks of data, like 20 videos at once, so it's an advantage to copy it using the PCs sd card reader.
Acer made a couple improvements over the 50x. The 70x can use USB charging (although really slow, and you don't want to be using tablet). They removed the USB Port, but supply a USB dongle. Speakers are a touch better. And, they gave us unlocked bootloader :good:. So it makes rooting a breeze.
People complained about a processor overheat, but all the high performance tabs do that. Price we pay for the great display. I've never had issues though.

A 20% off coupon for the Nexus 7 was the tie breaker for me. -- $90 dollars less than the best deal I could find on an A700.
The 1G RAM on the A700 also worked in favor of the Nexus 7. I think, unfortunately, than Android is getting more RAM hungry, The race to add features vs. optimization/cleanup. Otherwise the Tegra 3 wins easily.
Another big factor was standard USB charging. What I read here indicated that the A700 did slow charge over USB, but from what I know about other devices, slow charging does not even keep up with use.
I also decided that I would carry a 7" tablet places I would not carry a 10" tablet. If I am going to carry around a 10" tablet, I may as well carry around my Ultra Book.
I can also put the N7 in the back pocket of "normal" pants. Obviously, I cannot really carry it that way, because If I sit down, I *will* be buying an A700, but If I need my hands free, I can put it there temporarily. I am not of the proportions necessary to wear pants that have pockets big enough for an A700
Yes, no SD and no USB Storage mode is very frustrating. It's crippleware -- Defective by design. I wish Google would wise up to this.

No problem mate. No waste of time Doesn't hurt to get some opinions before buying.
However, I hear from my mates, that the new N7 is prone to random re-boots and sleep of death. Not all of them, but a good chunk of them. Seems some software issues. Might wanna check the N7 (2013) forums for the post.

Need Help Deciding On A Tablet

First I apologize if this is not the correct section, there doesn't appear to be a general tablet section.
I really need some help on deciding on a new tablet & I'm hoping I can get some advice. I currently have a Hisense Sero 7 Pro that I bought a couple of years ago. It's been a decent & reliable tablet but it has become very laggy lately as I load more apps onto it & try to multitask with it more. It also freezes constantly now for no reason.
I'm looking for a 7 inch tablet in the $100-$130 range. I don't know a ton about tablets. I know with personal computers that for the most part more RAM means equals less laggy performance. Would a Quad Core tabley with 1 GB of RAM be a safe bet for years of use with almost no performance lag or slowdown? I use it mostly for web surfing & some games like Candy crush, Subway Surfers & Temple Run. My daughter will also sometimes watch some TV shows that I have loaded on a Micro SD card.
Again my main priority is something that will be unlikely to slow down & freeze over time. For tablets what is the key for that? Quad Core, memory, something else? Sorry for the newb question.
Edit... One thing I forgot to mention is it must have a Micro SD card option.

I would have to recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 Tablet, Quad-core Marvell PXA, Android, 7", Wi-Fi, 8GB, Black. I've been using this tablet for a while now, and I've got a lot of apps installed as well as having a few games for my girlfriends brother (he's three) and we can both use this and it isn't too heavy. The screen is awesome and the tablet is really fast. I had a Nexus Tablet 7 before and it just kept dying really quickly and wasn't really up to standard.
I hope this might help you, also I understand that the tablet I've recommended isn't the cheapest!! But I think you'd be better off paying a little bit more and therefore getting more bang for your buck as the old saying goes.

Thank you for the suggestion. I don't mind paying a little more to get a better tablet. Do Samsung's tablets also come with TouchWiz like their phone's do? I've never been a big fan of that so might be a deal breaker.

I just noticed that the Nexus 7 tablet has 2GB's of RAM. For $165 it seems like a pretty decent deal. Does anyone have any positive or negative experience with the Nexus 7?

Samsung tablets come with Touchwiz. The Nexus 7 is a very good tablet, especially for the price.

The Nexus 7 is a competent tablet. Being a Nexus device you get the quickest updates to new Android versions from Google, and/or tons of 3rd party custom development (ROMs, kernels, etc). The one thing it lacks though (being a Nexus device) is a microSD card slot. I believe you can, however, use USB OTG (on-the-go) cables to plug in SD card readers or USB thumb drives, although this might require a custom ROM/kernel that enables this function, or at least requires Chainfire's Stick Mount app.

Hi. My sero7 pro is 2 yrs old and still going strong. You didn't say, do you have root? Are you running a custom rom? lollipop is now available, as other custom roms. Not trying to talk you out of a new tablet, but maybe you can fix this one for your child. It's an awesome, fast tablet.
My antutu score with dopa lollipop is 23,166. And no freezing.

I didn't realize the Nexus 7 lacked a microSD card slot, I think that's going to be a deal breaker although I may still consider it.

I do not have root. I guess I could try that with a custom ROM. At first I thought maybe I had rogue app that was causing problems with the tablet but even after doing a factory reset & only loading a few essential apps it still becomes laggy very quickly with constant freezing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the Sero 7 Pro, it has been an awesome tablet when it worked. I'm thinking something is wrong with it though at this point so I'm only looking for something new because this one has now become frustrating to use. If I could find a way to get this tablet working like it did the past 2 years I'd be ecstatic. I think the Sero 7 Pro was a very under rated tablet for the money.
