[Q] My phone is all scratched up; should I replace the housing? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Up until today, I had never dropped my Skyrocket before and then today all of a sudden I dropped my phone three times! Now it has little chips and scratches around the edges of the rear housing and scratches on the battery cover and there's one little piece of paint chipped off on the front edge of the housing (not on the screen, but the plastic part next to the screen). Luckily the screen is fine though.
So now the question is, should I try to buy a new rear housing and battery cover? I'm getting a new phone soon, so I'll probably be selling this one and I don't know whether I should replace the housing and battery door or not...
Will the scratches and little dents and stuff lower the value enough that it will be worthwhile to replace the housing?
Thanks!

No, slap a case on it. Rock it untill you get new one.
Yea it will not sell for very high scratched, but people don't care whether it had scratches as long as the case covers it.

Am I understanding you incorrectly or are you saying that what people don't see, they don't care about? Thus, if I just throw a case over the scratches, people will no longer care about the scratches?

+1 Like covering baldness with a cap. Whoever's going home with it will notice the most.

How about putting a case on before it gets dropped? Skyrocket is a slippery beast, good tpu cases are cheap.

I usually buy cases (I had 4 for my Inspire), but this time I didn't buy one because I got the Skyrocket right when it came out and there weren't any cases I liked that weren't really expensive. I just never really got around to it later...
And I'm still not sure what you guys are telling me to do? If I sell it, what am I supposed to say? "It has scratches but don't worry, you can't see them because there's a case over them."
And I guess I won't be getting a new phone until the One X starts shipping into the US again....

You can get OEM battery covers for $15 or less shipped.
I'm not aware of anywhere to get a whole new body though. And I looked a little bit.

It's like selling a car... Want top dollar... Fix it closest to mint... Want to dump it, cut the cost and sell as is

Well they have the housing on eBay for around $20 and the battery cover can be had for around $10.
But what I need to figure out is, if I replace those two things, will the price be at least $40-50 more than the scratched up phone? Is it worth my time, effort, and cost to fix it or would it be cheaper (or more worth it) to just sell it as is?

Link to the housing??

Btw, eBay is too fickle. You can get anywhere from an incedible buyers price to a horrible price.
Depends on too many variables that you can't control unless you set a BIN at a high price and are willing to wait several days or weeks for it to sell.
Or a high reserve... but IMO, a high BIN is better than a high reserve because high reserve prices just generally piss off buyers. Or at least me.

How much is your time worth? I know it wouldn't be worth my time and effort..but that's MY time.

If someone has the choice between $300 scratched phone and $300 none scratched, which one do you think they will go for? If someone is putting out that much money they don't want to buy crap. If I had a choice between a $300 new looking phone and a $250 scratched one, I'm going for new.

How much do you think it would drop the price?

The less it drops the price the less likely it will sell. Say it drops the price only $10 who will buy a scratched phone when they can get a better one for only $10 more dollars.

Yeah but for like $50, you don't think that would make much of a difference?

Why don't you put it up for sale as a feeler and see what kind of offers are working. The longer you wait, the less it'll be worth.

I would assume as long as its decent you could get about 80 to 85% of its value

Check eBay and Craigslist to see what others are going for, paying more attention to the ones with bids on eBay.

What i'm saying is people use cases with their phones, majority of the time. Someone getting a deal will buy a scratched up one. Replacing the housing is expensive and not worth it for resale. I personally have the otterbox from the day I bought it. So my phone is in mint condition.

I wouldnt really call it cheap.
Its the same 3M military grade rubberized plastic that Zagg and the rest of them use just they order the big roll then stamp it out they make maybe a dollar off of each phone after shipping and supply.
But its about half as thick as the Zagg and doesnt quite feel as rubbery but hell you are paying 3 dollars and it will be far easyer to fit in the Slip Grip car dock ^_^

Same with me. It's pretty good and the screen protector feels good as well.
None of that orange peel stuff neither, the air bubbles and water inside also went away in 3 days and it looks perfect, flawless now. I wish it also protected the sliver metal around the screen but it's good enough for $3.
And also, I like the glossy look of the phone when it's under light.

Yep, The battery cover has its own little skin you can put on.
My only gripe with the whole kit is it doesnt cover the corners of the phone very well.
One quick question: does the skin cover the camera?
Thanks!

Gorilla Glass has been defeated by clumsiness.

I can't tell you how many times I've dropped this phone and I am still amazed by how long it held up. But, yesterday, It finally gave in to my clumsiness. Luckily, I have the insurance for it. Thats what I get for letting my Captivate run around naked
So... moral of story... get a case and keep a tight grip? Lol.
I have a half circle chip bout a quarter in wide on the top of mine. Got insurance, but waiting till something devastating happens. How high was it? That fall on mine was only 1.5 ft.

Now ive got a screen protector and a nice all black cheapo TPU skin case.
I have best buy insurance. It's like 8 bucks a month, no deductable. Covers scratches.

Small scratch that only I can see
Got a small scratch that I'm kinda anal about, but like someone else said I'll wait until something really bad happens before I try out my insurance. I pay around 4 or 5 dollars a month thru at&t for my insurance, didn't know the deductable was that much. By the way, does anyone know of anything that will remove small scratches?
I have a cheap case I got off of ebay and it's saved my phone more than once. I literally saw it bounce a few times as it hit the pavement, it still hurts to see but I'm glad I have my silicone case on it.

There is a product made by Maguires for plastics to remove scratches. I used it at my upholstery company to take scratches off of the plastic windows on boats and convertibles it should work on your phone. Im sure an automotive place would have some or a detail shop.

I dropped my captivate a few times, but there was this one time...
I was talking, and holding it with my shoulder while I was working on a router.. Standing about 6'2", I was leaned over a bit, so I think it fell from about 5.5 feet, and landed on the bottom left corner.. square onto a concrete floor.. It has a blemish (hardly noticeable, unless you look really close) on that corner now, but the screen is 100% undamaged.
I love this phone, and I'll never ever trade it until we see 2GHz speeds. The only case I have for it is a holster that sits on my belt..
BTW, I also took a key and a pair of scissors to try and scratch the screen with no success.. Heck.. I've thrown it across the room to my daughter a few times.. (Good thing she can catch!)

[Q] Broken the glass on my Captivate

This literally happend about 3 minutes ago. My dog bolted for the door and took out my legs from behind me which sent my phone flying out of my hand. It looks like just the glass is broken as the screen and touch screen still work perfectly.
So has anyone replaced the front screen? Is it replaceable? This pisses me off to no end as the phone didnt have a single mark or scratch on it and I just got approved for a brand new replacement to be picked up tomorrow at my local ATT store, to remedy the random shut off and random search key press.

Nope, its a pretty involved process requiring a complete teardown

you better get it! $5 a month!
Any recommended places to purchase a screen from and where can I find a good guide. There are a few out there, but as we all know, not everything is created equal.
If you go to an AT&T store it probably won't end up being on file (you don't even have to tell them who you are if they say "no"). Also, since gorilla glass is supposed to be nearly indestructible, it doesn't hurt to try to get it replaced under warranty (sounds like a manufacturing flaw/defect to me), the worst they can do is tell you "no."

$5 per month plus a $90 deductible to replace the phone... $5 x 24 mo. = $120 + $90 = $210. I guess $210 is cheaper than buying a replacement off-contract, but $90 for a new piece of glass is a better deal...
With a deductable it adds up. I always fix them myself when they break a lot cheaper

Worth buying an gs3 w/ broken screen?

I have found a craigslist post in my area saying there letting go there phone for $250. In the post they continue to say that only the screen is cracked. A picture they posted shows the phone on with cracks on the screen.
I have emailed them and they replied that if it doesn't sale they will just repair it, because it only cost $18 (this concerns me, why not just repair on such an expensive phone)
My questions: is it worth it?? Also what questions do you think I should ask? And if I meet them in person what should I look for?
Thanks in advanced xda folks!

My friend cracked the glass on his and the screen won't even turn on. I called the phone and it rang but the screen wouldn't light up and the digitizer wouldn't register touches. So I'd stay away.
I have seen replacement screens on eBay for $20 or so, but I believe that the digitizers are glued to the screen.
If you can't cleanly separate the two, you're probably in for the cost of a replacement combo ... about $200.
Still cheaper than a new one outright ...

I've seen replacement screens on ebay for maybe $15-20 but to replace it seems rather difficult: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_70-W9JjVjg&feature=relmfu.
It's really up to you whether it's worth it or not. If you're up for the challenge of replacing the screen (or if you think you can live with the crack, you didn't mention how bad it is) then go for it. If not, I'd probably stay away as this doesn't exactly seem like an easy fix.
Try lowering his price to 200$ then send it in to Samsung they will charge about 190$ to replace it. The digitizer is glued to glass and u won't be able to separate and put on new glass.

Replacement screens are about 18-20 but replacing them is very difficult because of the adhesive that bonds them... Dont't buy it.. you would have to buy a new bezel with the screen and digitizer attatched to it. about 200-250 itself..A shop around me does it but they said it would be 300 plus labor..
If you can get it at a decent price and can replace the screen cheaply then i would say go for it.

Where did u get that quote I have a broken gs3 and best option is Samsung 180 shipped and returned. OP did the phone need bezel replaced? Here is my damaged phone not one scratch on bezel landed perfectly flat and the SGP case doesn't offer much protection over the screen its almost flush. Two pieces of plastic and all the waterproof membranes. You're paying for the R&D as well as the quality nof a name brand. It's cheaper than the otterbox armor cases go for as well as lifeproof cases. If it's too much buy a cheap one from ebay and after you submerge it in water and your phone is garbage buy a more expensive case for your new phone.

If you have a couple of days to read this, here is my thoughts (LOL)...
Well, you are correct there is never a 100% guarantee, even if 99% of the units work great 1% might have problems. It reminds me of the S4 Active. The difference is that $90 for this case is a lot cheaper than taking the same gamble for a $600 phone. At least that is the way I look at it.
I'm just looking to use the case as a "what if" type of protection. Hopefully, it will be a lot better than that. I hope it will be good enough to take into the water and take pictures with or drop the phone from chest-pocket high and not have a scratch, but I'm not going to expect it to be that good until I test it to that point...slowly. The case's rating is better than the rating of the S4 Active, but that is only as good as the smallest defect might let it be.
I have square trade insurance, but I would rather not use it. I don't want to take the chance of getting a phone with MF3 as a replacement or even having to re-setup a phone that has MDL. To me, the $90 is worth the extra protection. So even if it doesn't stand up to the ideal standard, it will still be worth it for the extra protection is does give.
You see, I know the case I have on the phone now will not protect it as good as the OBEX will... I currently use the Seidio Surface and it is a real good case, but even if it only lives up to half of the hype the OBEX will protect it better.
Again, it will be a "wait and see" situation as to how good it will work. Maybe I won't throw it in the water right away, but it is nice to know if I accidentally drop it in the water that it should help.
One of the major things I want to know is how well it will handle heat displacement. Under normal conditions, my phone never gets real hot, but in my ibolt car cradle, charging with the sun hitting it through the windshield and using Navigation, it is a different story. I want to see how it handles those situations. So for me, inside forces are going to be more interesting than how it protects from outside forces. But, I will report what I find out.
I like the previous poster's thought process. I have a S4 with ATT and bought the S4 Active the third day it came out. I never used it outside of the house because there were no cases etc for it. After a week or so I started seeing reports of issues. Since I spent $640 on that phone, I thought I could do everything right with this phone and still have it get ruined by using it in a manner that they promote. I returned it after a week.
I then bought the Lifeproof case for my iphone 5 and it was amazing. I was taking pictures and video in the pool! My wife has a S3 and we bought her a Lifeproof case for our beach vacation. I was great having our phones (left my S4 at home) on the beach and the sand and in the water. Of course we tested the cases first underwater without the phones like they recommend.
I will seriously look at the Obex for the S4. The S3 model was too big and they say they have slimmed down the S4 model. $90 is great for the peace of mind near the pool or water which we are almost daily living in Dallas. Not sure I would leave it on all the time but surely on the weekends so hopefully it is fairly easy to put on and remove.
With the money from returning my s4 Active I got a S4 Google Play edition which is an amazing device! That is another post though...

I have the ST warranty as well on my S4 and my wife's S4 Active. I do like the idea of being able to take pictures under water, but the biggest benefit for me would be the dust proofing. I can't stand the lint from jeans pockets mixing with skin oils and getting jammed in every nook and cranny on a phone. It is gross, and eventually eats away at the finish.
I do understand the fact that we would be paying for R&D, and I am no enemy of companies making a profit, but from the consumer side (at least from my point of view) $80 is a bit steep for a couple pieces of plastic that 'may' protect your phone under water.

It is a lot especially since I already payed a good amount for an Otterbox. But my daughter put a cup of juice on my night stand once while I was sleeping didnt know it was there and knocked it over on my droid 2 and it ruined it. I went 4wheeling with my s2 and sunk my quad with my phone in my pocket in a river and it was done for a week and then I was lucky enough it worked again but after a few months started having problems. So its worth it to me that I know if something haopens my phone will be ok. And its cheaper than paying for insurance and a deductible if my ohone got destroyed.

True.. however don't you also need the insurance in addition to this case if you live such an active lifestyle?
I am not knocking the need for the case. I just don't see the company selling all that many at that price tag. Surely they could easily cover R&D with quantity. There's maybe $5 in materials in it... purely from a business standpoint, for a more attractive price they can lure people away from the cheap knock-offs.
the case does look pretty solid, though. I doubt there will be many complaints about the quality.

I see your point brother, but I know I'm getting it after I see a third party stress test it before I pay for it.
I work for a cell company and the case we sell the most is the lifeproof and the Atlas (also $89.99 price tag) , and at least 50% of my s3/4 customers want that option, of course I live in a rural state so lots of hunters and outdoorsy types, but point is there is a demand for them, I want mine for the waterproof, me and friends regularly go to the river on days off.
Posted from a Galaxy S4 it was.
I would like to see the Lifeproof Nuud for the S4.
In general the Obex for the S4 looks better than the one for the S3.

I've got my S4 in the Seidio Surface and with the Convert for outdoors etc. Would love to get the OBEX for those water days, but being that summer is almost over and wont see much water here in NY except for rain and snow I'm having a hard time justifying another $90 for case and holster when I already have 2. All I'd be adding is waterproof. My Convert already protected me from a 6 ft drop to cement floor.
Also thinking for those that are planning this as weekend case, what effect adding and removing the case so many times will do to its waterproof capabilities.
I just got an email saying my case has been shipped. Hopefully it has actually been shipped and not just a label made up waiting to be shipped next week like they originally said. I would like to get it before Wednesday because I'm going to the shore for a few days. It would be nice to have it.

For $4 plus tax you can get over 40 water resistant cases from the Dollar General. They're made by Glad.
